00:27That's a whole lot of anxiety to deal with, but it looks like he and Lady Gaga managed
00:31to make it through the storm thanks to their ability to support one another.
00:34Phillips said that the duo's mutual admiration for one another helped them both get through
00:38the shoot with grace, which ultimately helped them turn in complete performances.
00:43He told Entertainment Weekly,
00:44"...the truth is, they gave each other pointers.
00:47He'd give her pointers about acting.
00:49She's been in movies, but he's Joaquin Phoenix.
00:51She gave him tips about music because she's Lady Gaga.
00:54That's what movies should be, a giant collaboration."
00:57While Phoenix ultimately got past his nausea, the film's musical production numbers definitely
01:01required some careful forethought.
01:03Show tunes, big band numbers, and other catchy, horn-driven pieces make up the soundtrack
01:09for Joker, Foley, Adieu, including takes on songs originally sung by Frank Sinatra, Judy
01:14Garland, and more.
01:16There is, of course, a reason behind Todd Phillips' musical choices for the film.
01:19The director said that the song selection represents Arthur's newfound love for Lee,
01:24and the music the twosome perform are mainly songs Arthur's mother used to play when he
01:28was younger.
01:29"...my mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face."
01:36But when Arthur sings them as a man who genuinely never has been wanted or needed by another
01:40human being until now, the lyrics reflect exactly what he's feeling.
01:45Phillips explained to Entertainment Weekly,
01:46"...what happens when a guy who hears music inside his head finds love for the first time
01:51in his life?
01:52Why the music that he hears inside his head starts coming out?
01:55Why wouldn't that music come out when he meets somebody who gives him the time of day?"
01:59Lee, Phillips said, completes Arthur's need for true affection, while Arthur completes
02:03Lee's needs for a man of action.
02:05But where do these big-time moments happen?
02:07While it's not in the reality the characters really exist in, The Joker was more or less
02:11a reality-based movie.
02:13It turns out that the musical numbers in Joker, Foley, Adieu, however, takes place solely
02:17within the characters' delusions, which explains how and why Arthur and Lee have access to
02:22the Tonight Show set.
02:24This is a fitting approach to the film's use of music, if you know the meaning behind the
02:27French phrase, Foley, Adieu, madness for two.
02:30But is the movie a full-on musical?
02:32Todd Phillips initially refused to classify his sequel this way, mostly because of his
02:37feelings about how the genre ought to make you feel.
02:39But the director seems to be having second thoughts about that.
02:42He told Entertainment Weekly,
02:44I got a little heat for saying it's not really a musical.
02:47I wasn't saying that because I'm afraid of the term musical.
02:49I love musicals, and the movie definitely has music in it.
02:53It might even be a musical."
02:55He went on to clarify that most times after he's seen a musical, he's walked out of the
02:59movie feeling a lot better than he did when he walked in.
03:01Phillips then added,
03:02"...on this movie, I'm not sure it's the same thing.
03:05I wouldn't want to be misleading and say you're going to be whistling the songs from this
03:08movie on the way to your car after you see it."
03:11Before the sequel is getting mixed reviews, DC fans will find out whether seeing Arthur
03:15feeling bad and singing duets with his new love, if only in his mind, can make them feel
03:19good when Joker Foley Ado hits theaters on October 4th.
