Harold Crick est un homme parfaitement ordinaire. Employé modèle, il travaille au fisc et mène une vie de célibataire parfaitement organisée dans ses moindres détails. Ce quotidien réglé comme une montre suisse se perturbe quand il se met à entendre une voix qui décrit tout au long de la journée ses moindres faits et gestes. Mais les choses se compliquent brusquement quand cette même voix lui annonce sa mort prochaine. Pris de panique, il s'adresse à un psychiatre, qui lui conseille de contacter un spécialiste en littérature. En effet, la voix ressemble à la narration d'un roman dont Harold serait le héros...
