00:00We'll be right back with more live right here to end out this
00:07Monday in our final segment here on the early line on sports
00:10grid. We start sadly with some news around basketball legend
00:15NBA Hall of Famer Dekembe Mutombo. He has sadly passed
00:18away at the age of just 58 years old following a battle
00:24with brain cancer. The eight-time NBA All-Star the Hall
00:28four times one of the legends of the game known for wagging the
00:32finger when he would block a shot and a really really great
00:36humanitarian around the sport and around the world has sadly
00:39passed away at the age of 58 again following a battle with
00:44brain cancer. Sad news in the basketball and sporting
00:47community. Now as we look back on the weekend that was in
00:51college football. You mentioned or you heard Donnie and I
00:54mentioned it in our breakdown and our recap of the game of
00:58the year in Tuscaloosa between Alabama and Georgia a game that
01:02we hyped up with a ton of excitement and atmosphere that
01:05match the occasion and that's a beautiful thing on Saturday a
01:09tale of two halves Alabama off to a very early lead 28 zip
01:14scoring a touchdown on each of its first four opening
01:17offensive possessions. But then you saw the resilience of a
01:20Kirby smart Georgia team. They didn't run away. They didn't
01:24back down from the challenge. I'll be it inside Brian Denny.
01:27They were down 1835 3315 entering the fourth and final
01:31quarter scored on three consecutive possessions took the
01:34lead with two and a half minutes remaining only for some poor
01:38tackling and Ryan Williams brilliance for Alabama to win
01:41the game 4134. There are times I think where you could look at
01:46that game and question if either of the two teams are tops in the
01:50country, but I think your overall assessment should be
01:52both of these teams are two of the five best two of the three
01:55best two of the two best teams in college football this year
02:00and we made this point a few times at the end of a season
02:03ago. This was just the third regular season matchup between
02:07the Bulldogs and the tide since the start of 2015, but we had
02:11seen them meet three times in the postseason prior to
02:14Saturday night since the start of 2021 twice in the SEC
02:18championship game once in the national title game and because
02:22of Alabama knocking off Georgia in an upset last year
02:25in Atlanta in the SEC championship game. It was the
02:28Crimson Tide onto the college football playoff Georgia left
02:32on the outside looking in some would tell you what do you need
02:35an expanded college football playoff for that was a playoff
02:38game for a conference championship at stake and I
02:42understand the argument but now in the regular season. Did you
02:46feel as though the significance was diminished on Saturday
02:50watching that thrilling game? Did you feel as though? Hey,
02:53what a great game? I watched for three and a half hours, but
02:55it didn't really matter. Did it? Did you feel that obviously
02:59the answer is a resounding? No, the game was important. The
03:03game was significant. The game was masterful. The game was
03:06magnificent and we are going to see both of these teams still
03:10have an outstanding opportunity to qualify for the college
03:13football playoff and have the chance to compete for a
03:17national championship. That is the beauty of the expanding
03:21college football playoff and that did not leave us on
03:25Saturday night watching that game Georgia last year when
03:30being left out of the CFP had lost one football game in its
03:34last 30 by a field goal and a conference championship against
03:39Nick Saban in Alabama. There's a really good argument to say
03:43that Georgia was the best team in the country last year and
03:46never had a chance of winning the national title beyond that
03:51conference title matchup. That's no longer the case. We
03:55knew there was going to be movement. How drastic the
03:58movement from the odds perspective that was the
04:01question following the result on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa,
04:05Alabama is now the national championship favorite at plus
04:09370 closer to a seven to one price on the Crimson Tide
04:13entering that matchup. The Crimson Tide also now ranked the
04:16top of the country as the number one team in the AP
04:20poll plus 370 the price for Alabama, Ohio State 10 cents
04:24back at plus 380 Texas third best number at five to one, but
04:29look at Georgia plus 550. We have seen the Bulldogs get as
04:34low as plus 270 plus 280 to win a national championship this
04:38year. The preseason favorites who had the market worked
04:41against them ever so slightly after the narrow win in
04:44Lexington now two Saturdays ago or three Saturdays ago, but
04:50they are not now 50 to one or plus 55 to one or even 10 to
04:55one or 15 to one. They have an accurate price to win a
04:59national championship at plus 550. The odds will tell you
05:04what we saw on Saturday was a matchup in a brilliant football
05:08game between two of the four best teams in the country, at
05:13least in hopes of winning a national championship, and that
05:18is a good thing for college football. The early line
05:21returns tomorrow 8 AM Eastern here on sports.
