00:00Hi, my name is Jack Marshall and I'm a digital reporter with the Lancashire Post and welcome
00:05to another one of our retro archive picture galleries, which is just showing you some
00:10of our standout retro archive images on certain topics. And this week's topic is how Preston's
00:16High Street has developed and changed down the years. Now we all know that with the onset
00:20of things like online shopping and the increase of e-businesses and e-commerce that the high
00:26street has kind of lost its preeminent spot in the British consciousness when it comes
00:31to all things shopping, all things spending money of a weekend and of an evening. So it's
00:36fascinating to kind of go back and see how things used to look. Obviously the shopping
00:40scene in Preston has undergone remarkable transformations over the decades, reflecting
00:44much broader changes in retail culture and the evolution of the traditional British high
00:48street as it's evolved, like we say, from the old school scenes that we used to remember
00:54back in the 50s, 60s, 70s and onwards to what we're seeing now in the mid 21st century,
01:02or early 21st century rather. Obviously it's gone from being dominated by traditional family
01:07run shops to huge conglomerates, which are global really, global retail chains. So it's
01:14really fascinating to kind of go back and see how everything used to look back in the day.
