00:00Hello and welcome to Cancer Night live on KMTV. I'm Mahima Abedin and here are your
00:26top stories on Friday the 27th of September. We're not giving up, the Gravesend businesses
00:33fighting back the rising shoplifting trend. You'll find that there's so many different
00:37people also doing shoplifting. You've got opportunists, people who are doing it as a
00:44career lifestyle, organised crime and also people with substance misuse problems as well.
00:50Mystery of the Margate Man. As 28 years pass since he was found dead, investigators release
00:55his first artist impression. By just seeing the face, something comes back to you so that's
01:01what we're really hoping for in this case. And what's cooking? As air fryers become the
01:06third most popular kitchen appliance, we asked Kent students what they're baking on a budget.
01:11Anything that can be used in an air fryer, I would cook it in an air fryer.
01:18First tonight, passengers from a car in Canterbury have escaped of their lives after a dramatic
01:29train crash on a level crossing. The broken down Nissan was smashed into earlier today.
01:35Our reporter Finn McDermott is in our newsroom with some more information for us. Finn, we're
01:40about to see some dramatic pictures, can you tell us what's happened?
01:46Sure thing Mahima. Well, there's been a lot of information coming through about the incident
01:50all day. There's been discussion from the public and from different news sites so I'll
01:53just get right into it so we can clear up what's been happening. Earlier today at around
01:582pm, customers of Southeastern Rail were informed of a crash near Sturry. Now, all we knew at
02:03that time was that a car had been hit by a train on a key Canterbury line at a level
02:08crossing. We now know that the car had stopped on the track at Grove Ferry Crossing just
02:13outside Herston just before it was hit. And as of around 5pm, so very recent news, we
02:19were informed by Network Rail Kent and Sussex that the car has been safely removed from
02:24the level crossing. Now thankfully there were no deaths or injuries at the scene. And we
02:29do have some pictures from that incident. The Nissan Qashqai suffered significant damage
02:35to the front and the rear of the vehicle. On the pictures you can see the emergency
02:41services working at the scene with the train itself being completely halted. Now while
02:45the work was ongoing, the power to the third rail, which is an additional rail used to
02:51supply electrical power to the train was turned off to ensure the safety of emergency workers.
02:57Now the crash itself was along a key line near Sturry Station. With the current information
03:02we have, the collision means that trains aren't able to run between Canterbury West and Ramsgate
03:09as well as Ashford and Ramsgate. Other services may also be affected. Earlier today at 4pm
03:14Network Rail told us that they were aware of a slow speed collision between a train
03:18and a car at the level crossing and there were no reported injuries. The disruption
03:23is expected until 7pm this evening. So rail replacement buses are being arranged to serve
03:29stations along that line. And if you've been affected, you can be eligible for those stagecoach
03:34or loop buses. A Southeastern spokesperson told us earlier that we are working with Kent
03:40Police to reopen the line as swiftly as possible. And that's all the information we currently
03:45have about the incident. Thank you for those details Finn. Now an inquest has concluded
03:53a 24-year-old woman whose body was found on Folkestone Seafront died of cocaine toxicity.
04:00Leah Daly was reported missing at the beginning of May and wasn't found until almost two weeks
04:05later. The inquest into her death opened today in Maidstone where the cause of death was
04:10recorded. Her family have since said they will never get over the amount of time taken
04:15to find their daughter. Investigators of an infamous cold case in Margate are hoping a
04:24new image will lead to important clues. A man was found dead in a hotel in the seaside
04:29town 28 years ago. His identity has never been discovered. Now volunteer sleuths are
04:35hoping they can find out more about the person thanks to a new artist's impression of him.
04:41Our reporter Kristen Hawthorne's been down to Margate to find out more. An image of a
04:46man that was found dead in a guest house in Margate in 1996 has been released as it's
04:51now three decades later. The investigation turned cold after police were unable to identify
04:57the man. A cold case is where police no longer have enough evidence to pursue an investigation.
05:04Although it's no longer here, just over my shoulder was where the Jolly Roger Hotel used
05:07to be, where the man who has not yet been identified was last seen. And that was the
05:12case for the Margate man, until today where a constructed image of the person's face was
05:17released to the public. Locate International, an organisation that looks into these cold
05:22cases, especially those of missing or unidentified people, were responsible for the new evidence.
05:29The thinking behind it is that by creating a living depiction, as we call them, of the
05:34person as they would have looked in life, then it can make a bit more of a difference
05:40and become a bit more recognisable to people. And we have found by doing this, even with
05:46cases going back to the 1950s, that people's memories are triggered in a way that they're
05:52not triggered by, you know, other memories, for example, by just seeing the face, something
05:57comes back to you. So that's what we're really hoping for in this case.
06:01In the case of the Margate man, they hope the photo will lead to his identification
06:05being found. It is believed he was a Japanese man in his mid-twenties, around five foot
06:11eight inches tall and weighed around 11 stone. In the guesthouse book, he gave his name as
06:16Mr Karasawara.
06:18Our research has come to the conclusion, really, that that name is incorrect. So whether
06:24it was incorrectly transcribed at the time, it's been misinterpreted, it's been misunderstood
06:31over the years. There is a suggestion that that could be from the south of Japan. Certainly,
06:37it seems like a Japanese name. So our theory now is that he almost certainly was Japanese,
06:42this man. And the fact that he had gone to look for a Japanese restaurant in Margate
06:49kind of also confirms that, I think.
06:52After his death, a coroner later recorded a verdict of suicide. According to Locate
06:57International, having the closure of knowing what happened to your loved ones can bring
07:01peace during a time of grief. So long as another piece of the puzzle is revealed, thanks to
07:07the public's input, the investigators will continue to try and get to the bottom of who
07:11the Margate man truly is. Kristen Hawthorne for KMTV in Margate.
07:17Now to sport. This weekend sees a big match in League 2 as Gillingham take on Barrow in
07:22a top-of-the-table clash. The game also sees the return of Steven Clements to Priestfield
07:27after he was sacked as Gillingham manager back in August and has since been leading
07:31his new side, Barrow. Bartholomew joined me earlier with more.
07:35Bartholomew, there must be a lot of excitement for this game.
07:39Absolutely. Top-of-the-table clash. The current titans of League 2. And of course, it's coming
07:45as another home game for Gillingham, where they've been so strong, I'll say it every
07:49time I come and sit on this sofa, until it's no longer true, unbeaten at home since Boxing
07:53Day last year. So a real fortress that Gillingham have managed to make and that has carried
07:59on with Mark Bonner at the helm. But of course, Mark Bonner replacing Steven Clements, who
08:04will be bringing his new side, Barrow, who have also been doing very well to Priestfield
08:08this season. Let's quickly take a look at the table here. So as you can see, only seven
08:12games gone, but it's been a very tight contest so far. We're seeing both teams having won
08:18the same amount of games, drawn the same amount of games, lost the same amount of games. The
08:22only difference being that Barrow has scored one more goal than Gillingham, keeping them
08:26on the top spot. And of course, as we've said, Steven Clements returning to Priestfield.
08:30Lots of fans excited to see him again because he didn't leave on necessarily bad terms.
08:35He was in the job for six months. He finished the season on 12th. The start of the summer
08:40was sacked and replaced by Mark Bonner. So it should be an interesting one. Let's hear
08:44from Mark Bonner. He was speaking at the press conference this week and he was asked what
08:48he thinks the atmosphere is going to be like this weekend.
08:51I'd like to hope really respectful and people that have been here in the past, that knowing
08:56how tough these jobs are, having done it here and somewhere else, you know how difficult
09:02the job is, you know how committed you have to be to do it. In the end, that isn't the
09:07story. The story is two teams playing against each other and we want to win. So they do
09:12too. That's really much more interesting to me than anything else.
09:16Clearly Mark Bonner there, not wanting to rile up any sort of rivalry, just trying to
09:22tone it down. But of course, we'll see what it will look like on Saturday. Now, one more
09:26story to quickly bring you is the FA Cup. It does return this weekend with the third
09:29round qualifying. So lots of our non-league sides still out in force. So many games, I
09:34can't go through them all now. So go to Kent Online, have a look through. They'll have
09:36lots of articles throughout the weekend. But one story we do want to bring you is the game
09:41between Ashford United who are away to Chertsey. Now, it's an interesting one because Gary
09:45Lockyer, as you can see on the screen here, is ninth in the total Golden Ball leaderboard.
09:51That's the total amount of goals scored so far in the competition. For context, that's
09:56quite big because last year's winner of the entire competition got 10 goals scored. So,
10:01you know, even if Ashford United don't make it all the way to the final, like, you know,
10:04the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United last season, he's still in a good shot of
10:09taking home a trophy. So yeah, brilliant result for him. We actually spoke with Gary Lockyer
10:12earlier this week on Invicta Sport. We can hear from him now.
10:15It's made me want to get it even more. I think, you know, I've got, so I teach an under 12s
10:21Ashford District side. You know, some of the boys there are rooting for me. They're like,
10:25come on, we need to get this next round Chertsey away. It's going to be a tough game. They're a
10:30league above us. So, you know, you've just got to take every game as it is and then hopefully,
10:36you know, the elites or even a non-league footballer don't overtake me.
10:44You can watch that full interview at Kent Online. Now, 11 birds of a long-lost breed,
10:49once native to the cliffs of Dover, have been released into the wild.
10:53Part of a five-year conservation project, the latest round of rewilding brings the total number
10:58of red-billed chuff released into the wild to 19. Known for their historic ties to the county,
11:04including being featured on many coat of arms, such as for Canterbury,
11:08the hope is to return the Corvid to the county's coastline after a 200-year absence.
11:17Now it's time for a quick break, but when we come back, I'll be joined by our politics producer,
11:22Oliver Leeder de Sacks, following a brand new episode of the Kent Politics Show.
11:26Plus, as airfryers become the third most popular kitchen appliance, we've been finding out what
11:31people here in the county are making with theirs. All that and more after the break. We'll see you
11:36soon.

15:03Hello and welcome back to Kentonite Live on KMTV.
15:07A new crackdown to tackle young people vaping has launched in Tunbridge, Wales.
15:11The first of its kind pilot will take place over three months. It will see trading standards
15:16inspecting all 80 reported vape retailers in the town alongside talks in schools.
15:21The MP for Tunbridge, Wales, Mike Martin, says he hopes it will set the standard for the whole
15:26country. So we live in an age where youngsters, school kids are able to get vapes and go to shops
15:36and get those vapes illegally and what local vape action is about is making sure that all those shops
15:41know their responsibilities and so that they're not unwittingly selling vapes to underage kids
15:45and that's for the good of all of us. Well another Friday means another episode of the Kent Politics
15:52Show. With the Labour conference wrapped up and the Conservative conference set to start this
15:56weekend, what do you need to know? Well our politics producer Oliver Leader de Sacks joins
16:01me on the sofa. So what happened on the Kent Politics Show tonight Ollie? Well Mahima it was
16:07quite an interesting one with Alex Patterson, a Medway council cabinet member and Rich Layman
16:13who is the Green leader of the group over at KCC and there was lots to discuss because obviously
16:19there's a brand new report out and it's going to be discussed at cabinet in Medway in a couple
16:24days time about school places or a lack thereof in Medway because demand is increasing with inward
16:31migration to the area. So we've kind of discussed whether or not this is going to be a big impact
16:36for Kent and beyond and of course one of the biggest things facing Kent at the moment
16:41well and not just Kent across the country, it's getting everyone talking, it's the freebie scandal.
16:46Are Kent's politicians getting too, are politicians in government getting too many donations?
16:51Obviously the Prime Minister has hit back, says of course it's not that big a deal but some people
16:58here in the county think it's a little bit rich and I actually asked Rich Layman about it and he
17:03said that this could change how KCC elections look next year and could stop a rainbow coalition
17:10ousting the Conservatives. Here's a clip. That's a very interesting question because the
17:19the expectation I would say is that we're going to see a potentially and I think everyone in
17:26the county council is thinking it potentially looking at a rainbow coalition so
17:30were that to happen we will be largely the three main opposition groups, Labour, Lib Dems and Greens
17:36will be targeting Conservative seats so a potential kind of threat to that arguably is a
17:46big dip in Labour popularity after their large general election win which could mean that
17:53the Conservatives carry on in power by a very small majority.
17:58Well Ollie, the Kent Politics Show had a bit of a different look tonight didn't it?
18:02Yes, we've gone a bit of a rebrand that lines quite well with everything else, all the political
18:07coverage in Kent over at Kent Online. Our graphics guy Rodri has done an amazing job but it's not just
18:14the Kent Politics Show you get your Kent Politics coverage at, you can go and watch the Kent
18:19Politics Podcast on Ion Podcast and sign up for the Kent Politics briefing over at the Kent Online
18:26website where you can find all the views and news where you are. Amazing, thank you Ollie. Now don't
18:33forget you can keep up to date with all your latest stories across Kent by logging onto our
18:37website kmtv.co.uk. There you'll find all our reports including this one about the reopening
18:43of a Roman house in Dover. A piece of Dover's history has been opened to the public and it's
18:50older than Canterbury Cathedral, Rochester Castle and the Tower of London. The Roman painted house
18:55is an ancient ruin with unique painted walls and underfloor heating that was excavated all the way
19:00back in the 1970s. Back in July 2023 there was a miscommunication between the council and the
19:07house's trust. Locks were changed and no work or maintenance was done causing mould to form
19:13and the site to fall into disrepair according to the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit. Afterwards
19:19the lease was returned to the council before it was recently reopened as part of Dover's Heritage
19:24Open Weekend. Well historians were able to match the age of the Roman painted house thanks to
19:29some minted coins that were found inside proving it was constructed around 176 AD.
19:37Now when it was dug up in the 1970s archaeologists were actually looking for part of a much
19:42larger fort. This fort was called the Classis Britannia and was a naval barracks that sat in
19:47the valley of Dover which at the time was called Debris and had two lighthouses that could guide
19:53sailors to the nearby port. One of those lighthouses would eventually be where Dover Castle now stands.
19:58Now there are a few differing opinions on what exactly the painted house was.
20:02In the building itself we don't know for sure exactly what it would have been.
20:08One end could have been for something but we're pretty sure because of the central heating
20:16underneath the hypercourse that it was for moneyed people, senators and people with money
20:23coming from a long voyage over from Calais. Here they would need to put their head down
20:28have a nice hotel to sleep in. Since the site's opening in the 70s it's seen a total of 700,000
20:34visitors and the district council hope they can continue to get visitors through the door
20:39to experience some of Dover's Roman legacy. The future could be massively exciting because
20:44there's still finds that are uncovered that are yet to be uncovered out on the Roman lawn.
20:52This building's only got a certain shelf life. It's going to take a lot of funding so we're
20:58going to need a lot of help to do it but it could be really exciting and it could be a
21:04massive project that could be really significant and important for the whole of Dover. The house
21:10is only the tip of the iceberg with other structures still being under Dover's streets
21:14with the district council planning to turn the Roman painted house, Roman bathhouse and Roman
21:18lawn into a leading heritage-based visitor attraction. They're working with Historic
21:23England to look for funding for the future project. Finn McDermid for KMTV in Dover.
21:30Let's take a quick look at the weather.
21:39A cloudy start tonight with lows of seven degrees in Tunbridge Wells and in Maidstone
21:44and as tomorrow morning approaches we have some sunshine peeking out the clouds with
21:49Margate, Canterbury and Ashford reaching calls of 10 degrees and moving into the afternoon expect
21:55slightly warmer temperatures of 14 degrees around Chatham and Dartford and for the rest of the week
22:00sunshine and clouds again for the rest of the week mild temperatures of 14 and 15.
22:05And finally ovens out, air fryers in. It's become the most common kitchen gadget used across Kent
22:20and the whole country. Air fryers have gained popularity over the years and a survey suggests
22:26more people now use that instead of a conventional electric oven. Well I'm not the best cook so I
22:32thought I'd take a look for myself to see what all the craze is about. Could cooking habits across
22:37the county be changing? When we think of making a meal we might get our pots and pans but one kitchen
22:43appliance seems to be taking over. So easy to make in your air fryer. Easy air fryer honey hot chicken.
22:50Air fryer crispy parmesan potatoes. An air fryer pizza toasty is one of the most elite things that
22:55you can have at lunch. They're so easy. The air fryer. A survey by the Good Food Nation found it's
23:00become the third most used kitchen gadget with more people choosing it over the conventional
23:05electric oven. So basically I'd use it for toast and bread usually I might use it for cocktail sausages
23:12anything that can be used in an air fryer I would cook it in an air fryer. Anything really I do I
23:17really like cooking roast potatoes in there with like salmon things like that it's really good.
23:20Mostly I use it for healthy foods instead of fast food and stuff like that. I'd use it probably two
23:26to three times a week not necessarily every day but yeah probably that often. I think it's really
23:32easy to cook and I can have it within just 20 minutes. Now I'm not the best cook and this
23:38air fryer has been in our office for quite some time now and I've never gone anywhere near it
23:43but seeing as this utensil is becoming one of the most popular I thought it'd only be right to give
23:48it a try today so I'm gonna make a pizza toasty it's one of the easiest recipes I saw online
23:53let's give it a go. I may have decided to make a toasty in the air fryer as some companies claim
23:58it makes the perfect toast but more than three quarters of those surveyed would still rather use
24:03a traditional toaster. While the air fryer I used was just under £30 some people spend thousands
24:09on purchasing top of the range versions. But was it the perfect toasty though? Well I'll leave that
24:15for you to decide. Mahima Abedin for KMTV. Or I'll leave that for Ollie to decide. Now Ollie
24:23my pizza toasty that I made earlier today is right here on the table and I want you to have a bite I
24:28want you to take try try some of it. Well Mahima you know like pizza is like one of my favourite
24:32foods right so I'm kind of excited to see your your take on it. I know it's been lying around
24:36for a bit but let's give it let's give it a go. Let's hope it's good oh it's been out for quite
24:41some time. No? It's definitely something. Is it really that bad? I thought I did pretty well.
24:55Still chewing.
24:58Does it taste quite dry? It's not it's been out for a while so.
25:05Oh I think you might need some water soon.
25:12Surely it can't be that bad Ollie. I think you're exaggerating though.
25:17That's so dry. That's like sandpaper or cardboard or something. I'm not even joking that's that is
25:24um. No I mean I don't think that's down to my cooking I think that's because it's been out for
25:27a while. I'm I'm not trusting those air fries anymore that's all I'm saying you know. But um.
25:34Is it what you expected? Um I'm not sure what I expected but it certainly was not that.
25:40Well earlier when you were talking about pizza being your favourite I was going to tell you
25:43don't get your hopes up too high but. Yeah um there's no going back now I can tell you that
25:49much but you know what Mahima it's time to get my own back because we actually wanted to quiz
25:54your knowledge a little bit on the air fryer because on the screen right now you'll you'll
25:59you'll be able to see we're going to test your knowledge on what each of these things are and I
26:05want to know what do you think has been put through the air fryer right here? Um well what are
26:11they? Roast potatoes? Roast potatoes? No that's a banana. Oh. And what about that? That looks like
26:18apples. Yeah you got that you got that one you got that one right. Yeah. And lastly. I can imagine
26:22that tastes quite good. Well I think I think that kind of gives it away a bit. And back to obviously
26:28the best show on KMTV but obviously. Well that's it you've been watching Kentonite live on
26:34KMTV. There's more news made just for Kent throughout the evening. Thank you.
