In the afternoon there will be a heavy band of rain extending across northern England and Northern Ireland while there are some scattered heavy showers in the south of the UK while Scotland is largely dry. Feeling cool in the north of the UK and it will also be quite windy. Heading into the evening and overnight the frontal systems settles over central England and Wales, bringing heavy rain and thundery showers to this area and an amber warning for rain is in force for central England. Further north it is drier overnight with a few showers.

00:14at the weekend. Further rain expected during the rest of Thursday and into the start of
00:18Friday. This frontal system at the moment bringing persistent wet weather across northern
00:22England and Northern Ireland and some very strong winds, notably gusty for parts of north
00:27west England, north Wales. 50-60 mph wind gusts could cause some issues on certain roads
00:32such as the A66. That swathe of 60-70 mph wind gusts moved south overnight bringing
00:39some lively weather to parts of Cornwall during the early hours but as it clears we will see
00:46colder winds set in. Now, it's going to be feeling cold across northern and central Scotland
00:51through the rest of Thursday although brighter skies here with a few showers. Also feeling
00:55cold under the wet and windy weather across Northern Ireland and Northern England. The
00:59rain continuing to mount up here could be some issues come rush hour. There will be
01:03some sunnier spells across the south, 17 or 18 Celsius here, but slow moving heavy and
01:11thundery showers will develop and these will become particularly lively through Wales,
01:15the Midlands, East Anglia during the evening and as the main frontal system sinks south
01:20it all converges and sticks around for several hours and that's why it's across central England
01:26where the greatest risk of flooding is overnight with an amber warning in force and the risk
01:33of transport disruption by Friday morning as well. A mild start because of all the wet
01:38weather in the south, a colder start further north where we've got those northerly winds.
01:43Those northerly winds mean that sheltered parts of central Scotland don't see much rainfall
01:48at all over the next 24 hours, but these are the 24-hour rainfall totals up to Friday
01:52morning. 50mm widely for parts of eastern Northern Ireland and north-east England, 80mm
01:58over some east-facing hills such as the North York Moors, but you can see this sway through
02:03Wales into the Midlands, central England and Norfolk where there's the risk of 50-60mm
02:10of rain. Much of that falling in just a few hours through the evening and overnight and
02:17of course coming on top of the very wet weather that we saw over the weekend. There'll also
02:21be some heavy showers running along the south coast first thing Friday, but by this stage,
02:27by mid-morning, the wettest of the weather is clearing. It's clearing to brighter skies
02:32and by the afternoon a much improved picture across the UK for many places. Sunny spells
02:38and a few showers, but also this cold wind coming from the north, so 13-14C at best in
02:44the south, 9-11 further north temperatures, several degrees below average. And that leads
02:50on to a chilly start to the weekend, but also we're going to see plenty of clear weather
02:56overnight on Friday night and into Saturday morning. And Saturday itself we'll just see
03:03some showers across the north-west, some wet weather across northern and western Scotland,
03:08but otherwise for many places it's significantly drier and brighter compared with the next
03:1324 hours.
