00:00How do you catch one of these? I mean, I've been on a few captures, but not a whole herd like this.
00:06Well, Ivan, it's a logistical nightmare, but it is doable, and it's doable in a way that the elephants benefit.
00:14We don't harm them.
00:15Absolutely. Well, I can't wait to see that, man.
00:23You know, one of the things about an operation like this is the preparation, making sure that everything's right,
00:28making sure that all the drugs are right, the darts are prepared.
00:31This is not something you want to do on the fly.
00:34So Josh is just getting everything ready here, getting a bunch of darts together.
00:39And how long can they be down with us, Josh?
00:41We've had animals down for up to four and a half hours.
00:43We dart the matriarch, all the adults first, then we work our way down to the youngsters.
00:47I number each of my darts, and then on each of the darts I've written the dosage that's going into each dart.
00:54So I've got these larger darts for the adult cows, and then these smaller darts is for the medium-sized animals,
01:00and then these white ones here are for the calves, basically, and juveniles.
01:05And your ideal group that you're looking for, Josh, what's a manageable group for you guys?
01:09About ten animals. It is quite a bit of responsibility, but you've just got to do the best you can.
01:17Absolutely. Cool.
01:20Translocating a hundred elephants is a massive undertaking.
01:24One by one, the herds have got to be captured in the field, they've got to be loaded into trucks,
01:29and then they've got to be transported over a thousand kilometers to their new destination.
01:33And as big as the elephants are, so too are the logistics behind them.
