Sunderland children deliver cosy care packages to pensioners following scrapping of winter fuel payments

Pupils from Plains Farm Academy have been delivering cosy care hampers to pensioners in the local community.

00:15Okay then Margie, what do you make of what the kids have done in bringing this package along for you?

00:19Brilliant smashing.

00:20And what's some of the gear you've got in there that's going to help? What have you got?

00:23Well socks and that will help me and the water bottle and the blanket.

00:26A nice water bottle there as well.

00:28And I'll have meat biscuits.

00:30Is it a concern for older people getting cold over the winter? Is that something which does concern you?

00:35No, it does. Like on a morning, I was freezing this morning.

00:40And do you want to say something to the kids then for bringing this across here then?

00:47Okay Mrs Quill, can you just tell me a bit about the initiatives that the school's involved in please?

00:52Well obviously after watching the news and hearing that the pensioners were going to be getting their winter fuel took away from them,

01:00I decided to speak with Miss Cassidy to see if we could help our community because we connect with our wellbeing team.

01:08So obviously I went to see her the next day and she's always on board with new ideas and then we just ran from it

01:16and decided what would go in the parcels and the children were all on board.

01:22Okay. Emily can you just tell me what sort of items you got in the parcel up there and what sort of things you just handed over?

01:28Blankets, fluffy socks, hot water bottles, flasks and some biscuits.

01:35And how important do you think that's going to be for the older people when they get that?

01:38Very important.

01:39And Marnia, how does it make you feel to hand over that parcel there to the lady upstairs?

01:44Really good and it's like, it's happy to see a smile when we give it to her.

01:51And Adam, do you always like to help people as well? Is that why you came along?

01:55Yeah, I always help people.
