00:00Sign TV is a private Kenyan channel created for the deaf community.
00:10It airs daily shows on everything from entertainment to health, all in sign language.
00:33Mainstream TV channels are also becoming more inclusive, with news broadcasts featuring
00:38sign language interpreters.
00:40It's estimated that three million Kenyans are deaf and many live on the margins of society.
00:45For the first time, the government is organising a disability expo where they're promoting
00:50hearing aids.
01:07But hearing aids are expensive.
01:09They can cost up to three times an average salary.
01:12That's why the state is encouraging the use of Kenyan sign language and training about
01:17150 people each year.
01:32The government is urging all teachers, doctors and civil servants to learn the national sign
01:38It is Kenyatta Hospital which has sponsored me and they have actually released me to come
01:44and do the sign language because I could be of help to the hospital.
01:48A law passed last April requires every school to have a sign language interpreter.
01:53But it will take time for this to be fully implemented.
01:56Currently, fewer than 2% of deaf children have access to appropriate education.
