00:00Leclerc has just got on with it.
00:02And gets on with it to complete the lap with a 1.30.8.
00:06Now, this time last year, Yuki Tsunoda had the fastest time in Q1 with a 1.31.9.
00:12So with that extra DRS zone and the cars being a bit faster this year,
00:15we're already over a second ahead of that.
00:18Sergio Perez crosses the line quite a long way, it has to be said, behind Charles Leclerc.
00:23Out in Q1, of course, in Baku last week, Lando Norris, yellow flag, wrong time, wrong place.
00:29Caught him out, had to back off, then aborted his lap.
00:33Couldn't get into the top 15.
00:35But that bank a lap of a 1.30.7, you would imagine,
00:39will be good enough by the end of this session to get him safely through.
00:42Yeah, I'm sure he can go faster.
00:44But as you know, Martin, it's not just about who's fastest.
00:46At the end of this one, it's about survival.
00:48And that is not the way to survive for Carlos Sainz.
00:51Mention Carlos Sainz not going to the right of the bollard at the end of the first series of corners.
00:58He's been noted for failing to follow the race director's instructions.
01:01Hamilton goes ahead of Albon Perez and Colin Pinto.
01:04Perez can't really improve much.
01:07It's a 1.31.5, but he stays seventh fastest.
01:10Made that eighth fastest.
01:11George Russell crosses the line just ahead of Sergio Perez.
01:15Let's just have a quick look at Max Verstappen out on the track.
01:19Whoa!
01:20That slide, that was sliding around like Simon Leysen beyond the luge.
01:26It was, but it's...
01:28Wow, that could have been such a headfirst into the wall.
01:33And Max's cat-like reactions kept that out, as Charles Leclerc did too.
01:38But you know what?
01:40A year ago, we barely saw a Red Bull slide, did we?
01:44It looked like it was on rail tracks, but it's no longer the case.
01:48Ted Kravitz, let's head down to you.
01:51Hearing a lot on the team radio feed of lots of drivers saying the track is not in a good condition.
01:56Lando Norris has gone purple, purple.
01:59Mercedes out on the track with Lewis Hamilton and with George Russell.
02:04And the two Red Bulls using another set of the new soft tyre,
02:08as Lando Norris goes to the 1.30.0.
02:13Slowing into the final corner, the car hits the ground hard on the way in.
02:17That must be so distracting.
02:19But it's P3 for now.
02:21So, could be enough then for Lewis Hamilton.
02:23Sergio Perez needs to pick up the pace.
02:25He's been out in Q1 four times this season.
02:27Has reached Q3 at the last four races, but he's very much on the cusp currently.
02:32Now goes fourth fastest.
02:34That's the sort of thing that Sergio Perez is looking for.
02:37But below him, lots of green sectors appearing on the timing screens,
02:41which means drivers are improving all the time.
02:43Like his teammate Max Verstappen, who goes second fastest.
02:47Daniel Ricciardo will be crossing the line soon.
02:50He's lighting up the timing screens as well.
02:52And let's ride on board then with the Aussie,
02:55as he hits the line now, goes 12th fastest.
02:58It's totally different to FP3.
03:01Totally different. These tyres are so different.
03:06And that's an ongoing story, isn't it?
03:08Because Pirelli were pretty upset with George or his comments in Baku.
03:11What else have we got here?
03:12Charles Leclerc down in 11th currently.
03:14Russell then down in 12th.
03:16Stroll is out of qualifying, because we've got the chequered flag now,
03:19and he's only 16th fastest.
03:21Behind him, Esteban Ocon, Joe Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, all going faster.
03:26Ocon pushes Sainz down into 15th.
03:28And Daniel Ricciardo out of qualifying.
03:31Pierre Gasly will be next for Alpine.
03:33He stays in that bottom five, which is a bit surprising.
03:36Alpine fancied a better qualifying here than they had in Baku last time out.
03:40Sainz goes sixth fastest, pushes Ocon into that driver at risk zone.
03:45Who below Ocon is putting a lap in?
03:47It has to be said, he's going to be safe,
03:49because others can't quite get the lap they wanted.
03:52George Russell will survive down in 13th,
03:55and Charles Leclerc pits at the end of that lap,
03:57because there was no danger from behind.
04:05Unbelievable bunch of idiots, Matt.
04:08We are in the way everywhere.
04:16So, you'd expect much more grip on the new tyres
04:21for both Perez and for Max Verstappen.
04:23Well, that's a handful for Verstappen right at the corner,
04:26where Lance Stroll crashed last year.
04:28Max Verstappen pulls off a mighty fine save
04:31and still goes faster than his team mate.
04:33Very good, a low 1 minute 30.
04:36And watch, Norris is going to pop into the 29s with this one.
04:40Incredible speed into the last corner.
04:43All easily within track limits.
04:45Didn't quite make it, did he?
04:47Talking to each other and in the right zone.
04:50And Max had already had one adventure then on that lap,
04:53by the looks of it.
04:54And here comes the second one.
04:56He's turned in and had a big swap on the bump.
05:01Ran wide and good night.
05:03Thank you to that lap time.
05:05Yeah, it didn't look great on board.
05:07It didn't look any better off board.
05:09I tell you, once again, cat-like reactions from Verstappen
05:12to save that one.
05:13Yeah, that was impressive, as was that.
05:17That sliding from Lando Norris as well.
05:19The track temperature's gone down about a degree.
05:22Is that what's making the difference?
05:24Just one degree track temperature?
05:27As you turn in, you need to touch both kerbs.
05:30The back end just about the right amount of slide.
05:33This one is working out a lot better for him.
05:36Into the final corner and over the line
05:39comes Max Verstappen to go fastest with that 1.29.6.
05:43More than Max we're used to seeing driving a Red Bull
05:46than perhaps we've seen for a few races now.
05:49Yeah, that is an indication of the hustle at Turn 14.
05:53It might not be the fastest time.
05:55It might be the fastest time.
05:57We don't know in this Q2 session.
05:59But I hope it gets him through into Q3
06:02because you want to see Max Verstappen competing with the rest.
06:06You said just the right amount of slide.
06:08Here comes Charles Leclerc as Piastri has gone fastest.
06:11Leclerc goes third fastest overall.
06:13And we've now got four drivers into the 1.29s on board
06:17with Carlos Sainz, a bit tentative, on turn in
06:21and goes sixth fastest.
06:23Albon and Colopinso both improving.
06:25Tsunoda goes down to 11th.
06:27Albon into the top 10, trying to reach Q3 at four races in a row
06:31for the first time as a Williams driver.
06:33But could his teammate deny him?
06:34No, Colopinso beat him in Baku, slots him behind him here.
06:38And he's out of qualifying too.
06:40Here comes Yuki Tsunoda.
06:41Albon's out of qualifying.
06:43Yuki Tsunoda goes eighth fastest in the RB.
06:46He's picking up a lot of pace in that middle part of the lap.
06:48Four tenths on his teammate Sergio Perez in Q2 in the final laps.
06:52But he's got three tenths up on Oscar Piastri
06:54who crosses the line, can't get into the 1.29s.
06:56And someone's gone off at the final corner, and it's Carlos Sainz.
07:01And we've had another accident at the final corner.
07:04And a red flag as well.
07:06This time last year, it was in Q1.
07:08Now, it's in Q3.
07:10And the session has been immediately stopped
07:12with the Ferrari hitting the barriers at that final turn
07:16at a speed of around 120 miles an hour
07:19and going backwards into the Tecro barriers.
07:22Let's have a little look here, earlier on in the lap.
07:25He was just slowing down.
07:27And he was starting a lap, Carlos Sainz.
07:29So, slow to let Oscar Piastri through.
07:33Yeah, and that's why it was nowhere near as big as we have seen in there.
07:36Because he was literally...
07:38So, basically, he's...
07:40Yeah, he's really backed off.
07:43Yeah, I think it was cold tires.
07:50Yeah, so he's had to back off a long way to get himself some space.
07:53And when he got there, nowhere near enough grip, as you say.
07:56He was focused on the steering wheel as well, wasn't he?
07:58Around the final corner with the young Australian.
08:01And it's a 1.29.9 for Oscar Piastri,
08:05who did not put in a best personal sector in that final bit.
08:09So, that allows Lando Norris half a chance more
08:12to try and snatch that provisional pole
08:14and what would be a first pole from Oscar Piastri.
08:16Norris crosses the line. He is ahead, then.
08:19It's a 1.29.5, and that might...
08:21And now, around the final couple of corners.
08:23A corner that took out his teammate, Carlos Sainz.
08:26Charles Leclerc is only fourth fastest.
08:28Second row and behind, Nico Hülkenberg,
08:31whose time is still holding that third place.
08:34Here comes Lewis Hamilton.
08:36Four poles previously in Singapore.
08:38And he's on the front row!
08:39What a final sector from Lewis Hamilton.
08:41And the crowd absolutely loved that one.
08:44Here's Max Verstappen. No pole for him since Imola.
08:47And he's now on the front row, tantalizing the two tens
08:51behind Lando Norris, his nearest challenger in the championship.
08:55George Russell goes on to the second row.
08:57He aces the final sector.
08:58Here comes Yuki Tsunoda, eighth fastest for him.
09:01Leclerc, time deleted. Ferrari, ninth in ten.
09:05That's pole.
09:07Yeah, well, that's difficult.
09:09Difficult to drive, but...
09:12Well done, everyone.
