00:00We will discuss an organization that fights for rights and improves the quality of life of people with disabilities or PWDs.
00:08And of course, the youth in our community.
00:11And to give us more information about Project Empower and their programs and initiatives,
00:19we will talk to its founder, JD Castro,
00:23and their sports director, Darwin Ingrassia,
00:26and Chief Legal Counsel, Atty. Annalyn Javiel Leonar Maco.
00:30Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:33Good morning.
00:34Good morning.
00:35To start, Sir JD, can you tell us what is Project Empower and what is our main goal here?
00:42So Project Empower is a non-profit organization that I started last year.
00:48And it's dedicated to empowering the PWD sector and of course, the youth sector.
00:54Well, I think we are also one of the biggest organizations that handles the holistic approach into the disability.
01:05It means we cater to all types of disability.
01:08And maybe to share, it started because I am a PWD.
01:14I was diagnosed with spinal and muscular atrophy.
01:17It's incurable. It's an autoimmune disease.
01:19Same with CP.
01:21And since then, I dedicated my life into helping the PWD sector.
01:27So that became your inspiration and motivation.
01:30And I understand, it takes one to know one.
01:33That's why this organization is so beautiful.
01:36Sir Darwin, one of your campaigns of Project Empower is the basketball event, Beyond the Limits.
01:45And I heard that you are also with Gerald Anderson.
01:48Can you give us details about this event?
01:53Actually, it all started with a chat message.
01:58And JD and Gerald were given the opportunity to meet to explain the program of Project Empower.
02:06And of course, we know that Gerald can help.
02:10So he asked how they can support the cause.
02:16So that's where our concept of building our adaptive sports program started.
02:22So the goal is for us to be the grassroots level of PWD sports.
02:28So our campaign will start with Beyond the Limits.
02:34So wherein, we will showcase the talent and abilities of our fellowmen, our brothers and sisters with disabilities.
02:42To show everyone that they too, just like us, have the talent and abilities to give opportunities.
02:51I agree.
02:52So on Monday, we will start our first episode of Beyond the Limits.
02:58So we will start by letting them play using our own games.
03:06Like a patintero.
03:07So we have a game of Lahi.
03:09Then we have exhibit booths where we showcase the products made by our fellowmen with disabilities.
03:17And other services that they can avail.
03:23So both for those with and without disabilities.
03:26So like those who want to learn how to sign language.
03:30So we have that.
03:32And then, our culminating activity because of the partnership with Gerald Anderson.
03:37So we will have an exhibition match.
03:40Basketball game.
03:42So the third floor celebrity team of Gerald Anderson versus our adaptive athletes team.
03:50So that will happen on Monday at Trinity University of Asia.
03:55So if you are free, you can come.
03:58Yes, looks exciting.
03:59Joshua is playing basketball.
04:01Yes, basketball.
04:02It's just fresh from last night.
04:03My legs are still hurting.
04:05So Ternic, how can we help other institutions, other organizations,
04:09so that we can expand the initiatives or projects of Project Empower?
04:15So Project Empower's real goal is to strengthen the sector of PWD.
04:20That's why we collaborate and partner with different organizations and government agencies.
04:30So one of these organizations is the Grain Foundation, PW Inc.
04:35Where there was a Kaya concert.
04:38Where the talents of PWD children were showcased.
04:43Singing, dancing, things like that.
04:45Then, one more thing.
04:47To our partner who was mentioned earlier, the third floor gym of Gerald Anderson.
04:51That is for sports activities.
04:54We also talk to universities and colleges for the hosting of Hoy! The Musical.
05:03This is the mental health awareness.
05:06Aside from that, just recently, we have collaborated and connected with the city of Mandaluyong.
05:12And the Poor Peace Party List.
05:14They are our sponsors and help in doing Beyond Limits.
05:18And other future projects of Project Empower.
05:22And as mentioned earlier, we have a partner, Digital Creatives Philippines.
05:29We will provide free digital literacy training for PWD.
05:35So this is what we call EmpowerCAD.
05:38Yes, it's complete.
05:40There's sports, arts and culture, singing, and CAD.
05:46Which can also be used as a profession of our friends in the PWD sector.
05:52Sir JD, we mentioned the different aspects.
05:57And I heard that you also have a rehabilitation program.
06:00Can you give us more details about this?
06:04So, being a PWD, I noticed that it's really hard to move in the Philippines.
06:10The mobility.
06:12And also, just like our cases with the muscular atrophy and degenerative muscles.
06:19I said that it's good to have physical and training programs.
06:22But when I look into the Philippines, there's none yet.
06:25So at that time, I decided to create the concept of Adaptive Fitness and Rehabilitation.
06:30Whereas, if you imagine Gold's Gym and Anytime Fitness.
06:36Regular people go there.
06:38And here, it's open to PWDs.
06:42So we created accessible equipments like a wheelchair or a gym.
06:47We created specific training programs for PWDs.
06:51But before that, of course, you can't just start working out.
06:55We created a rehabilitation program together with a physical therapist.
06:59And this will happen in the facilities of Gerald Anderson, the third floor gym.
07:04That's where we'll launch him first.
07:06He has two branches and we will do it in two branches.
07:10Sir, I'm just curious. How about the fees?
07:13Because here, I understand that it's not really accessible.
07:17When it comes to resources, how about the fees or the arrangement for the rehabilitation trainings?
07:25So we're very lucky because I'm very blessed to be partnered with Gerald Anderson, the third floor.
07:30Because he's very helpful and an advocate.
07:34So when we talked, our first target approach is the underserved and indigent.
07:39To give them an opportunity to access.
07:45So when we did it, we decided to partner with...
07:49And we have an ongoing talks with PhilHealth for the Benefits Z package for rehabilitation.
07:57And we're working with the City of Mandaluyong or Pitao because they have the funds also to help the indigent PWDs.
08:04It's good because it's like they're giving, they're opening the door for PWDs.
08:10For PWDs to experience these things.
08:12Because before, there's nothing like this.
08:15And you know, it's not accessible.
08:17Where will I go if I need physical therapy or I don't have a budget?
08:22And this is open.
08:24Alright.
08:25Thank you very much, Project Empower, for sharing with us the details about your organization, Project Empower.
08:32And of course, also for your initiatives and activities.
08:34I'm your host, John Darrow Castro.
08:35Darwin in Gratia.
08:36Tata Torni.
08:37Anne Lynn.
08:38Javi Llunar.
08:39Mapo.
