00:00:00Welcome to the football show on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel, I'm Peter Martin and I'm
00:00:08delighted to say Tam McManus, Ryan McGowan and Scott Allen are here with me. It's always
00:00:13interesting seeing you guys here because, Tam, Ryan always looks as if he's ready to
00:00:18go to court, he's got that serious face on and then he just relaxes into it, it's just
00:00:22that kind of fear before the music kicks in. He's a serious guy, serious man, you'll see
00:00:27that on TikTok with the golf, man wants to win. Apologies to everyone that we're a wee
00:00:33bit late because what we do is we come up with these great ideas to film them and then
00:00:37Tam ruins it, it's as simple as that because he's never on time unless it's a Christmas
00:00:42party and he knows that everything is paid for. So, Tam's here, as you can tell, he's
00:00:48been out on the golf course, Scott's been auditioning for Top Gun 3, the movie, he had
00:00:54his shades on, didn't he, honestly? He thought he was as cool as ice, didn't he? I bet you
00:00:59just walked here just so everybody could see you.
00:01:01Sunglasses on.
00:01:02Scary. Isn't it amazing how Scottish people just embrace it, you know, just go crazy even
00:01:09if it's 16 degrees, whereas Aussies, you're so used to it, aren't you?
00:01:14It's more when it's hot and everyone goes, it's so hot, isn't it? Can't put up with this.
00:01:18It's like two days a year.
00:01:19Exactly. When you were back home, is there a point where it becomes unbearable?
00:01:25Yeah, but that's sort of like late 30s, early 40s when it's, you basically stay indoors
00:01:31or go to the pub, but similar to here really.
00:01:34Yeah, absolutely. Once it drops below 16. Anyway, we've got lots to talk about and of
00:01:40course one of your former managers, Craig Levine, has been sacked, so we'll get your
00:01:46thoughts on that and the power struggle at Rangers continues. Who will eventually take
00:01:50the lead at Ibrox? Is UF on to a winner with that new Champions League format?
00:01:55Mother will have called on the fans to support them on Friday. They're going around with
00:01:59leaflets and Roderick, the Manchester City midfielder, has said players could strike
00:02:04because of being asked to play too many games. Do you agree with that?
00:02:08And we'll also talk about the image that is forever Italia 90. Toto Scalacci has sadly
00:02:14passed away at the age of 59, far too young, but a wonderful player. We'll talk about Toto
00:02:21and his contribution to Italia 90 a little later on in the programme. So, Craig Levine,
00:02:28sacked by St Johnstone, were you surprised?
00:02:32I thought if he was going to go this early it would have probably been in the summer.
00:02:36I think if you look at it as an overall, he came in and at that time we were really struggling.
00:02:41I think we were five or six points adrift when he came in as manager. He steadied the
00:02:45ship, kept us in the league, but I think there was probably a time to strike. It would have
00:02:50been in the summer and let a new manager come in and with the transfer window bring in some
00:02:54new players, but they've decided against that. It would be more interesting to see who they
00:02:59go with and who they come up with as their main targets to try and go and get.
00:03:05He certainly didn't see it coming, Scott. He was talking at a pre-match press conference
00:03:09ahead of the weekend's games about what his hopes are to get players in and obviously
00:03:15how to rectify some of the red cards that some of his players have been receiving. So
00:03:18he clearly didn't have a sniff that this was about to come.
00:03:21Yes, I think you obviously know what football is like and at any moment it can be something
00:03:26for the good or something for the bad. It most certainly was for the bad for Craig Levine
00:03:30I think. Even when he was speaking about these things, he has been frustrated in terms of
00:03:36the transfer window that they've had, guys getting sent off. It can cost you I think
00:03:40when you're at St Johnstone and maybe the important players, when you do miss them.
00:03:44The next week you need to replace them with maybe not the same quality. That's had a snowball
00:03:48effect in terms of how their performances have been, but it's not been the worst start
00:03:51to the season. But it is very ill in terms of to get rid.
00:03:56Yes, four straight defeats, Tam, but I think players and team performances can get you
00:04:03the sack. But in discipline I think has ended up really putting paid to his career as St
00:04:09Johnstone manager.
00:04:10Yes, I think when you're in a club like St Johnstone, you're probably one of the favourites
00:04:13to go down, Peter. What happened was up at the United, the player gets sent off and gets
00:04:19another five or six game ban, who's a main striker for them. They've really struggled
00:04:25with ten men in a few games. It doesn't surprise me, I think when a new owner comes in, Adam
00:04:32Webb comes in, I think you're always looking over your shoulder if you're the current manager.
00:04:36I think he'll probably want to bring his own manager and his own coaching staff in. As
00:04:40Ryan said, it'll be interesting to see who the next man is. I know Gus Macpherson is
00:04:44involved up there, I don't know if he's still involved in the football side of it, but I
00:04:48think with Gus there, maybe they'll go someone that's probably well known here. If not, if
00:04:52it's Adam Webb, then it could be someone in America, it could be someone anywhere, Peter.
00:04:56So as Ryan said, it'll be interesting to see who they bring in.
00:04:58Yeah, how important do you think it is that someone that's got a grasp of Scottish football?
00:05:05Because quite simply, sometimes when you get a board with a chief executive that doesn't
00:05:11understand the game and then doesn't really look too deeply into the type of appointment
00:05:18that needs to be made, you get a situation like Hibbs, suddenly, where there was a period
00:05:23where they were just sacking manager after manager. Dave Cormack suddenly in comes another
00:05:28person in the left field that gets the job that shouldn't really have been made manager
00:05:34of Aberdeen. I think in terms of that, when you're appointing
00:05:37managers, I don't think it's an easy decision. I think there'll be guys who you think can
00:05:41come in when they're having their interviews because now it's not just the evidence you
00:05:46give in terms of the previous teams you've been at, it's your presentations and the direction
00:05:50you think you can take the club. So I'd imagine there'll be a lot of candidates for it. I
00:05:55think with St Johnstone in terms of playing style, they're obviously looking for a certain
00:05:59type of manager. So that's the kind of situation where because of the type of player you have,
00:06:04if you do come in with a manager who's more possession based, that's where you sometimes
00:06:08get the problem. So I think both of the lads obviously touched on in terms of the type
00:06:13of appointment that's what's going to be crucial in terms of what he's going to get out of
00:06:17this squad that they've already got.
00:06:19As ever, there's always early what I call paper talk where basically they get into a
00:06:24darkened room and then just throw darts and say whoever it hits will put his name in.
00:06:30Scott Brown with possibly John Kennedy, going back the way to Tommy Wright for some fans
00:06:36and a little bit of sentimentality. Nick Dasovich, there's a name I haven't heard in a long,
00:06:41long while. And as Tam mentioned, there may be other candidates coming out of left field.
00:06:48I think if you're a St. Johnson fan, you probably want something to try and be excited about,
00:06:51whether that be a younger manager like a Reece McCabe, the AirDrew who plays that type of
00:06:57style to come in and give you something to progress the club and say this is what we
00:07:03want to do moving forward. I know St. Johnson historically have been a sort of rough and
00:07:09tumble consistent, but the new chairman might want to go in a different direction. So I
00:07:15think it will kind of come down to his vision of what he wants. But I think knowing St.
00:07:20Johnson fans, they want somebody to be excited about. I don't think they ever really took
00:07:24to Craig Levine, although he did the job that he was asked in terms of steadying his chip
00:07:29and keeping the Saints in the league last year. But I think they'll maybe want to go
00:07:33to a different direction, get someone young, someone exciting, someone who knows Scottish
00:07:37football. Ian Murray's out of a job. There's some of the names I've seen on Twitter that
00:07:44maybe knows the leagues, can go down into the Scottish leagues, pick up a good couple
00:07:48of players and have the Saints fans wanting to come to MacDermott Park to watch exciting
00:07:52football. Yeah, good couple of names that you mentioned there. But the other aspect
00:07:56of this term that we're not quite aware of is what's the vision from the boardroom? What's
00:08:03their plan? What do they want to see happen? And does the manager need to fit into their
00:08:08vision rather than a manager comes in and he brings his vision for what he wants to
00:08:13do at the club? Yeah, no one really knows. Adam Webb's just purchased the club and he's
00:08:20looking to try and probably do things differently than they have been. He's made an early call
00:08:24on the manager. As Ryan said, Craig kept him in the league last season. We were at a lot
00:08:30of the games with St Johnstone and I thought they were a little bit fortunate to stay in
00:08:33the league. I thought they could have went down. Gowser was obviously a rock at the back
00:08:39of the league. He came off it since I left. They've gone downhill since he's left. You're
00:08:47right Peter, we've seen American owners here before. Dundee and Aberdeen and the Hibs.
00:08:54Sometimes they want to go in a different direction. Sometimes they want to pick the manager. And
00:08:57if they do that then I think it will be an unknown or an exciting coach maybe from abroad.
00:09:02If not, then the guys that you mentioned. I think guys like Iain Murray has got to be
00:09:07one of the favourites for the job. I thought he'd done a great job at Raith. Unfortunate
00:09:10to lose his job. He's out of a job at the minute. I think he ticks a lot of boxes if
00:09:14I was a St Johnstone fan. Yeah, Graham Caldwell who's on our message board says, what about
00:09:18Iain Murray? Do you think a Premiership club would take a chance on him after his spell
00:09:23at Raith? There's no compensation to be paid now. It might just be the perfect man for
00:09:28the job but we'll wait to find out on that. No doubt there will be another few candidates
00:09:33from agents pushing it to journalists to put the name out there but in the end the St Johnstone
00:09:39board will give us an insight into that very shortly. At no point in us talking in-depth
00:09:44about Celtic in the game against Slovan Bratislava because obviously it's taking place tonight
00:09:51but on the journals tomorrow we will get an in-depth look at Celtic's performance against
00:09:58Slovan Bratislava. One thing we can discuss is the fact that Brendan Rodgers feels as
00:10:04if they can compete this season. Certainly speaking to the press ahead of this one he
00:10:10reckons that they are in a really good position with the squad he has. I think it was just,
00:10:17listen if you look at the nuts and bolts of it people will say you only got four points
00:10:20and then they'll cry about that and then the season before and the season before.
00:10:25For me I look at it, I thought last year it was decisive moments probably apart from the
00:10:30game away in Madrid where we lost the man early on in the game and we got punished by a team that
00:10:35got to the quarter-final and they made real good use of playing against ten men. I think the other
00:10:40games I thought we showed up well in. Interesting to see how they fare over the campaign because
00:10:49he now has stated he's happy with the squad he's got ready to take this campaign on.
00:10:54Well it's the first time we've heard that obviously in a few years from Brendan,
00:10:57obviously personally. We've seen some interviews of one after the submarine game,
00:11:00urgent to get new guys through the door and he has got that and the depth in the squad looks really
00:11:06good. Obviously Inglis comes in at the weekend and gets a go and looks positive but I think
00:11:10tonight for me I think it goes with Bernardo just based on how consistent he's been since he came
00:11:15in at the start of the season. Do you think they're better placed with the squad? Yeah I think
00:11:19absolutely and obviously with the experience they've got from the games last season you can
00:11:24tell this team even domestically has improved as we've spoken about before so it's a great
00:11:30tie for them opening night against Bratislava. Celtic are favourites, I do think Celtic will
00:11:36win tonight and could win quite comfortably if they play the football that we've seen.
00:11:39Interesting to see if the guys that he's brought in start or maybe come on with 20 minutes to go
00:11:44but what he's seen from his squad he'll be delighted with and that's probably how you
00:11:47see the confidence in him in terms of interview. Managers ever looking for positives from last
00:11:55season, it was four points in the end, it wasn't enough. In Brendan's first time around I mean I
00:12:00look towards the Man City game at Celtic Park as certainly one of the best that I've witnessed as
00:12:07far as atmosphere was concerned, excitement, finishing. I know people will look further back
00:12:12to some of the best atmospheres, Tony Watt scoring and Celtic defeating Barcelona but in Brendan's
00:12:18time that Man City game sticks in my mind because of the way they played football and I think
00:12:25this time they're starting to get back to the way I think he wants them to play. Yeah I think
00:12:30they've been definitely been a massive improvement even though so early on in the season in terms of
00:12:35how they're playing and how confident they look playing the way that he obviously wants them to
00:12:39play so like Scott said it's a perfect match for them to try and get three points even with a
00:12:47goal difference trying to put a few past them and really kick on because you know with this
00:12:51new format there is more games they'll be looking to try and get a lot more points than four to
00:12:55qualify to the next stage of the campaign and I really do believe that yeah they're probably
00:13:02looking to get around nine ten points this campaign I think. Yeah the one thing that we can't do Tom
00:13:07if you look at last night's results and I decided I don't know where your viewing was on it you
00:13:13obviously have six televisions in that one room and you're trying to multitask across them all.
00:13:18I was watching the Chinese third division at the time. Yeah the games from last night Young Boys
00:13:24nil, Aston Villa three, Juventus three, PSV Eindhoven one, AC Milan one, Liverpool three,
00:13:31Bayern Munich nine, Dinamo Zagreb two, Real Madrid three, Stuttgart one and Sporting Lisbon
00:13:38two, Lille nil. I think we're missing an L in that Lille but nevertheless as far as the overall
00:13:48scoreline is concerned I thought Young Boys were outclassed by Villa but you can't really get a
00:13:54grip on how they're going to perform against Celtic and again it's because these games are
00:13:58all one off now. Yeah I think Bratislava I don't think you can just turn up and expect to win I
00:14:03think they beat Midgetland I think the Danish champions in the last round so. Michelin.
00:14:09Michelin yeah just in case people think there's 11 Oompa Loompas.
00:14:18So no I don't think, listen I think if Celtic go out and play well they'll win the game but
00:14:23I think they're tough to think that if you're going to have any aspirations of qualifying
00:14:26what you'll win tonight. I think that'll probably be their easiest game, Bratislava at home.
00:14:29Have you changed your mind on the other games? I mean we all look at any of the opponents
00:14:35that Scottish clubs have in Europe and you start saying to yourself really good, won't win,
00:14:40should win, if they don't they're criticised. Young Boys I didn't see too much that impressed me
00:14:46but it was more to do with the fact that I watched Villa and I just thought they looked as if they
00:14:51could have scored far more than the three they got. Yeah Villa are top class Peter I think they've
00:14:55got a lot of quality players and managers different class as well you know real world
00:14:58class manager Unai Emery and yeah I didn't see enough a lot for Young Boys. I must admit and
00:15:04Celtic will be looking at them and thinking we could beat them as well. I think Villa will be
00:15:08probably the toughest game along with Dortmund for Celtic but no I thought that Aston Villa
00:15:13won the game comfortably and you would think looking at that that Celtic would take care of
00:15:17Young Boys as well. Yeah nice little touch from Unai Emery the Aston Villa boss who just paid
00:15:23tribute not only to the performance of his side but to the passing of one of the legends of Aston
00:15:30Villa and that is of course Gary Shaw. We're tired to follow. 42 years ago they achieved
00:15:39the last victory in Champion League and winning the trophy and of course we want to dedicate
00:15:47this victory for Gary Shaw, his family and for all the supporters of Aston Villa,
00:15:54all the family of Aston Villa. If you're a Villa fan you must be absolutely loving it right now.
00:16:01Yeah I think in terms of the players that they've acquired as well and the football
00:16:04they're playing they've got a world-class manager as Tam says. His history in European competition
00:16:09can't come into question he knows it he's a winner when it comes to European football so
00:16:13and I think that as well as last year away to Olympiacos where they would have been expected
00:16:19to win and they just didn't quite cut it and that was in the Conference League so I think they
00:16:23will have a lot of experiences from last year and I know he touched on that in an interview this year
00:16:28that they they'll feel they can go and out all the teams I think they'll be looking to
00:16:32probably win them all apart for the Celtic game I think for them I think that could be difficult
00:16:37I think Celtic down at Villa, Celtic historically do well against English sides I think that'll be
00:16:43a tough one but I think what they've got in terms of attacking sense we've seen them in midfield
00:16:48one of our own in John McGinn who could consider he's went from Hibsierd to Championship he's now
00:16:53playing Champions League football and it looked excellent last night so I'm really looking
00:16:58forward to seeing them play but I think when Celtic go down there that'll be a very interesting
00:17:02game I don't think it's as easy as Villa just turning up and beating Celtic. Yeah certainly
00:17:07there's some mouth-watering matches to look forward to but on the early evidence Villa look
00:17:12good I don't know about you Ryan we always joke about it but I sat down last night I thought to
00:17:19myself I'd looked at the games I thought I'm definitely going to watch Liverpool I'm a Liverpool
00:17:22fan love watching them and I started scouring everywhere to see where the hell the game was on
00:17:30and then you needed to have Amazon Prime you need to be
00:17:37brilliant or a Russian satellite this but I mean that's the nature of it fans you need to pay a
00:17:48fortune if you were if you were actually thinking I want to watch football yeah okay I'm going to
00:17:54watch Champions League football so there's there's TNT you're in and then all of a sudden
00:18:00you think oh wait a minute there's a game that you really want to watch and suddenly it's on Amazon
00:18:05Prime that is a hefty hefty situation to be in. Yeah it's not easy being a football fan is it
00:18:11trying to watch all these games and all these subscriptions that have to come out unless you're
00:18:15somebody else but yeah I think it's just difficult now with so many things going on so much money
00:18:21coming into the game in terms of companies and Amazon trying to buy games and you used to just
00:18:28kind of be you'd either go to the club that the game was on so it's Liverpool TV or it would be
00:18:34on Sky and now there's just so many more different options to watch the game in and yeah like you
00:18:40said it's a lot of games are here there and everywhere which is it's quite difficult to watch.
00:18:44Yeah absolutely and Celt88 on our feed says Amazon Prime is 10 times cheaper than Sky and TNT
00:18:53the sooner they have all the rights the better he says the other thing about it though is Tam
00:19:00you're in a situation I think this is the way it might go in the future I don't because people
00:19:05watch a lot of things on their phone I think I said to you maybe two or three years ago I thought
00:19:10they would go down the DAZN you know blueprint which is quite simple you want to watch a game
00:19:15it's a tenner you don't need to subscribe if that's the game you want to watch and you're in
00:19:20the you're in the house you know you want to watch it. I think the DAZN model with the
00:19:25boxings actually worked as well as they they'd expected to I'm sure I've watched an interview
00:19:29yeah but it works in Italy with the football. Do they use that in Italy? Yeah yeah you can watch
00:19:33a game for a tenner you know you don't need to subscribe you know and and they do that in a lot
00:19:38of the games across Europe the DAZN it's a it's a successful model and I think that's that's
00:19:45definitely the way forward people just can't afford to pay astronomical sums for three or four
00:19:50different platforms. Yeah you've got you've got Sky Sports you've got BT Sports you've got Amazon
00:19:55you've got Premier Sports you know you've got all these different subscriptions that if people want
00:19:59to watch all their games they might have a favourite English team you might have a team in Scotland
00:20:02you support and you're going to have to pay 40, 50, 60 pound a month and people haven't got that
00:20:08Peter so at the minute so nah listen it's it's one of those where you watch what you can afford.
00:20:16Yeah absolutely. I know exactly because he's he's out playing golf
00:20:23teaches kids a couple of days and then just saunters about on the channels looking for
00:20:28looking for football among other things. The other the other thing here is
00:20:33is you know lots of people are saying apart from Amazon Prime being cheaper
00:20:41is one of the guys says I'm one of the mugs that pays for all the subscriptions
00:20:46wow I mean that is a hefty. I've got Amazon. Have you got Amazon? Yeah I've got Amazon.
00:20:51Yeah that's the only one or have you got Sky? I've got Sky as well yeah. Yeah absolutely just to sign
00:20:56on. Yeah absolutely absolutely changed his number I remember it as soon as he got there
00:21:05and also North Sea says the zone is not successful. Well listen I'm not going to contest you on that
00:21:12I'm just saying that I like that I like that idea which is quite simply. So is that on the day you
00:21:18pay 10 pounds and you get the game? Yeah pay it all PayPal whatever you get the game you can get
00:21:23it on your phone you get it on your laptop whatever you get obviously quickly airdrop it
00:21:29onto your television or indeed I think you know. I don't even think the French football has been
00:21:34shown by a broadcaster this year has it? I think they lost the deal. Yeah I think they lost the
00:21:41deal with one of them which was a major blow I don't know if they've re-signed with someone else
00:21:47but nevertheless I do like the idea of a tenner do you Ryan? Yeah I think it's a good idea I think
00:21:52Scottish football should look into that in terms of you know if you can't make the game to say
00:21:56you're a Celtic or a Hibs fan and you and you want to go to the game but you can't make it
00:22:01being able to go on a platform pay a tenner watch it at three o'clock I think there's a lot of money
00:22:06to be made in terms of that if you can't make the game you know it's only going to be a tenner but
00:22:10if you can you can get along and you know if that went into a massive big pot that then gets split
00:22:15amongst all the clubs at the end of the season I don't see why it couldn't get going. Yeah you
00:22:21obviously don't know people in the central belt of Warwickshire and Glasgow. Are you sure you've
00:22:28not got Amazon Prime? I don't have Amazon Prime. Did your missus get stuff off Amazon? Zoe? Yeah.
00:22:35Now you have it then? You just type in it's the same that's why. I've got it from my wife's get
00:22:40the next day delivery thing on Amazon. Yeah that's Amazon Prime there is a basic one. It's the same
00:22:44thing? Yeah but there's a basic part of it I don't know if I don't think you've got it. That's you
00:22:49I'm going to check tonight. You've got too much money don't even know.
00:22:53I'm actually thinking to myself I'm raging I'm thinking to myself have I got Amazon Prime here?
00:22:59Is that right? I'll be raging honestly it was a one game last night I wanted to watch
00:23:08well I won't bother asking my wife I'll ask the guy who obviously she's on first name terms with
00:23:14Amazon delivery man because if he's not delivering something they're out for a meal
00:23:19so I'll just have to take it for granted that's the situation. Anyway apart from that as far as
00:23:24the games are concerned I do think that some European clubs are just going to really get
00:23:30hacked off because Liverpool they were too strong for AC Milan. Villa too strong for young boys.
00:23:39The English clubs are constantly showing up big time that's why I'm amazed sometimes that the
00:23:45Bayern Munich's or the World's Scott the Real Madrid's they have to keep they have to keep
00:23:50feeding you know the fans expectations to keep pace with them. Real Madrid it seems easy because
00:23:56they're winning the Champions League you know every other year. I still think though even the
00:24:01guys at Liverpool, Man City and that when they turn up to play against Real Madrid they know
00:24:07that's the biggest team in world football still that's still the biggest occasion for them the
00:24:10Real Madrid players constant winners especially as a club the amount of Champions Leagues they've won.
00:24:16In terms of England how they're probably looking to do this year it just shows you how far they've
00:24:21came that Villa came in and just brush aside young boys but that that would be the same with
00:24:25the group stages they would do that a four a pot four team who would come up against one of the
00:24:29one of the better seeded teams so for me Real Madrid still the kings of European football.
00:24:35Yeah they're going to take some stopping again aren't they I mean especially now you're adding
00:24:39Mbappe. Yeah I think like you said like everyone's touched on I think they still are the biggest club
00:24:44in Europe I think they're the one that everybody you know when it comes to the knockout games
00:24:48they want to avoid because they just seem to know how to win games and win games pretty
00:24:54comfortably in terms of Europe so yeah I think also with England it's the amount of money that
00:25:00they're getting to be put into their squads and you know the prize money that they get
00:25:05down south you know that allows them to go and build the sort of academies that they have
00:25:09allows them to go and you know pick players from all over the world and pay them crazy amounts
00:25:15of money so I think that does play a big factor in why England's English teams are doing so well
00:25:20in Europe. Yeah Bayern Munich 9-2 against Dinamo Zagreb he scored three penalties this hurricane
00:25:29I think scoring penalties is an art you need the quality and he certainly got it. Yeah I don't
00:25:35think it's as easy as he makes it look I think he's deadly from penalty kicks the only one I can
00:25:40remember him was the one against France where he skied it apart from that biggest one thankfully
00:25:45for us but he you know you just whip you can go either side he whips it you know across the keeper
00:25:50he can go down the middle he's lethal in those situations and Scots probably took a lot of
00:25:54penalties I've taken penalties I don't know if Gowzer's taken penalties but I've you know I
00:25:59think I maybe took nine or ten in my career and maybe missed three or four so. What was your
00:26:03technique did you make up your mind that you're going to go for it and that you stuck to that
00:26:10principle? No I've probably told you this one before Peter I missed one at Ibrox for Hibs
00:26:16and we were two each at the time I tried to place it into Stefan Kloss and honestly it dribbled
00:26:20into his hands he could have thrown his cap on it and I made my mind up after that the next one I
00:26:24was getting I was going to blast and I done that in the semi-final against Rangers where I blasted
00:26:28it down the middle at Hampden and he knew it was getting blasted and it was by him before he even
00:26:33moved it was one of the ones Peter I think if you're any sort of if you're nervous or you don't
00:26:38know where you're going to put it I think you'll miss it I think you've got to go up and realise
00:26:41right I'm going to I don't care what happens here I'm putting this to the keeper's right
00:26:44hard and if you do that then you'll probably score but if you've got any doubt in your mind you'll
00:26:47miss. Yeah I would always look because of the stats into penalty kicks down through the years
00:26:55especially at World Cups if I was taking a penalty I'd always look to put it high in the corners
00:27:05because that's where the keeper more often than not dives and he goes down the way so the
00:27:10percentage of stats. You're making that sound so easy. No I know that but the point I was going to
00:27:15say to you is if you look at Harry Kane you know he used to be at a point where he would go high to
00:27:21his left the keeper's right but when they were looking into the statistics around penalty kicks
00:27:27all right for me saying that no pressure you know in a bounce game where you guys are in
00:27:32a pressure of being professional footballers so the stats suggested that if you go left right
00:27:39just above you know the the keeper at the halfway point of the goal you're going to score
00:27:46the percentage of scoring is really high because the keeper more often than not dies if sometimes
00:27:52he puts his arm up all well and good he makes the save but you've got a really good chance of doing
00:27:56it and Harry Kane does that he goes corners all the time you very rarely see him looking for down
00:28:02the middle. Yeah I think we all kind of see that even in a game situation when he's finishing he
00:28:07kind of hits the penalties the same way where he whips it he wraps it back across himself. What did
00:28:11you do? For penalties I had all different there was one I hit for Dundee against Hamilton and I
00:28:16genuinely knew that I was going to miss it before I even ran up. What? I felt I just did not feel
00:28:21confident at all and I put it in the car park behind the stadium and we were playing Hamilton
00:28:28and a friendly and a friendly at Keltway at the start of the season the guys mind that penalty
00:28:33you hit against it and I turned around I actually had a feeling that I was going to miss it
00:28:38I know that sounds a bit mad what I'm saying but I just was not confident but I was on the penalties
00:28:44and then obviously I went back to Hibson started hitting penalties and was quite successful
00:28:49I think I missed one against Livingstone after about maybe six or seven that I'd scored so
00:28:55I never really picked a certain spot I think it was kind of on the day I started to change my run up
00:29:00I'm also so aye that's an interesting one that one kind of sticks out to me the Dundee
00:29:06Hamilton one not the Rangers so and I went up and I just did not feel confident
00:29:12when I missed it was as if I wasn't surprised I'd miss that sound a bit strange what I'm saying but
00:29:17I don't think you had to explain to us that wasn't the Rangers song we were going to burst into
00:29:22we hadn't really moved to that level
00:29:24we didn't really get to that level I knew you were thinking about it but as far as a penalty kick's concerned Kane you know last night he actually he didn't stop his run
00:29:38but as he was moving you just a little judder to see where the keeper's going and then boom
00:29:42bottom corner I think it would have been harder for him having to take three in a game again as
00:29:47silly as that sounds if you just have a one off you can go you know whichever way you want
00:29:52then it starts becoming is he thinking I'm going to go the same way the goalie then starts thinking
00:29:56is he going to go the same way so you know that's that in itself becomes more difficult
00:30:01when you've already taken two against them and you're going up for your third one but yeah I
00:30:06think everybody kind of knows penalties if you have zero pressure and you're doing it at training
00:30:11nine times out of ten boys can score but it's it's more coming down to your technique and
00:30:15and being in that sort of pressure situation and how you can handle it you know what sometimes
00:30:19you're going to have a bad penalty and it goes in sometimes your goalkeeper can just go the wrong way
00:30:24I've hit penalties I've hit near enough to in the middle and the keeper's went the wrong way and
00:30:27people goes great penalty time and goes that's not a great penalty it's just I've got lucky because
00:30:31he went the wrong way see if you had a penalty and the goalkeeper goes the right way and he still
00:30:34doesn't save it that's a good penalty for me yeah so if you whip it across and the goalkeeper goes
00:30:37that way and it still goes in that's a good penalty sometimes you can get lucky because you
00:30:41can just place it and the goalkeeper goes the other way I just I didn't really enjoy hitting penalties
00:30:45it was just more relief when it went in yeah pressure's on the on the taker isn't it really
00:30:49the other thing about it as well is some people and I know this sounds absolutely insane at times
00:30:53but you know if you've got that psychologically suddenly your heart rate can go up um for many
00:30:59players especially strikers it's almost as if their heart rate is down they're calm about these things
00:31:04I played with um Jelovic remember the boy that was at Rangers um played him in China and he had a big
00:31:11goal bonus so he was very much as soon as that penalty came in we had a Chinese boy who you know
00:31:17in previous seasons always took the penalties and he was just like no that's me that was his chance
00:31:22to to make some money and he just knew this was the best opportunity that I'll maybe get
00:31:26in the game to score and get some money so did he score regularly he scored yeah I think he scored
00:31:31I don't think he missed if I remember correctly I love that story yeah I know absolutely
00:31:37I mean honestly if you've got goal bonuses but yeah but he was just he used to think if I can get
00:31:43if the team gets seven or eight penalties a year over the course of the season that's me almost at
00:31:48double figures if I miss so he used to everyday practice penalties and um you know even back then
00:31:53it was a lot goalkeepers now look at who's the penalty taker they've gone the last three they've
00:31:58gone to the left so and so they go to the right pressure penalties they've all got that sort of
00:32:02written down so he used to try and make sure that he had a few up his sleeve that he was 100%
00:32:06confident about and keep saved he'd be obviously be raging but he put a lot of practice into that
00:32:12and like Scotty yeah he's confident about it I can only say I never really felt great hitting
00:32:18the penalty it was just more relief yeah um as far as um tonight's games are concerned everybody
00:32:23will have their own thoughts on what they're going to watch if you're uh like some of my friends
00:32:29would say we're definitely not watching Celtic Slova and Bratislava they would look towards
00:32:34pity them all Man City Inter because Man City and Inter are certainly when you look at some of the
00:32:39the early bookies odds they're up there in the top five that considered could be in the in the
00:32:47the quarters semis and the final yeah and it'd have been good for a couple of seasons now they've
00:32:51been really really strong you know winning the league and stuff but the Man City again probably
00:32:56a team to beat I think that you know you look at the squad they've got you know there's probably
00:33:00a team to beat again I think that Bayern Munich I think they'll be there this season I like Ulysses
00:33:03I think he's a good signing for them I think Harry Kane will get surely wins a trophy this season I
00:33:08think he's never won a trophy which is I think what do you think of the Skecher boots have you
00:33:12seen them I've seen now you must be getting paid a fortune to wear Skecher he's wearing Skecher
00:33:15football boots Harry Kane he's getting millions of pounds but to be comfy golf shoes and trainers
00:33:20and that but I don't know but I don't know about the gold ones on against uh for England aren't
00:33:25they gold Skechers even you wouldn't wear them and to be honest um let's not be taking any fashion
00:33:33um because so many people are actually commenting I kid you not so many people are saying what about
00:33:41Tam's clobber I mean it's just absolutely unbelievable the gear he's wearing um but
00:33:47that's what happens in the golf he just suddenly starts buying all this mental stuff uh and looks
00:33:53ridiculous um but uh yeah I don't I don't get you know what Skechers they might be great
00:33:59because not everybody laughed you know Michael Jordan used to wear adidas all the time and then
00:34:07suddenly you know he was influenced by one of the reps a great movie Air Jordan yeah and he was
00:34:14influenced to go out and look at Nike and they built their whole new design boot around him for
00:34:19basketball and they've never looked back yeah I don't think Harry Kane's gone to the local Skecher
00:34:24shop to get his football boots I think there's been a lot of you know process into what he wants
00:34:29what he wants from the boot how he feels comfortably and um yeah it's a good marketing move
00:34:34from them getting you know arguably one of the best strikers going about. Do you think kids are asking for
00:34:40Skechers because Harry Kane wears them? Yeah they will do in Germany oh yeah they will do eventually
00:34:48don't you believe that yeah I mean they're absolutely I mean the thing about it is the
00:34:52whole world now is dominated the generation now what do they call the generation now generation
00:34:59Gen Z the Gen Z are totally influenced it's influencers anybody that's got something they've
00:35:06got to have it so yeah they will get them by going Skechers I don't know about you what's the best
00:35:12pair of boots that you've ever had for comfort for the ability to go out and play without any worries
00:35:17Adermania if you will too yeah I didn't expect you to give me the year as well bloody hell uh
00:35:23right a bit of rubber on them white sole with the red blades yeah all right yeah what was good
00:35:28about them? Zidane wore them didn't he? So it's actually not the boot it's the player hey my
00:35:33favourites umbro specials umbro special yeah Alan Shearer wore them I had my most successful spell
00:35:40at Hibs with them on yeah absolutely seven goals uh Ryan I would go same with Scott yeah that was
00:35:47my boots Harry Keogh used to wear them and are these the blades were they not difficult to wear
00:35:52on Astro? No Astro they did change the blades didn't they but at the time they were okay yeah
00:36:00that was like World Cup 2002 yeah did you get them for nothing? No no you had to pay for them right
00:36:07it was yours Gola you look like Gola
00:36:09to be fair um just a nice little black boot with three stripes on it um that's good enough for me
00:36:21Coppers Coppers like Puma Kings I know you like Puma Kings my dad liked Puma Kings Peli was Puma
00:36:27King yeah absolutely anyway and by the way thanks to one of our guys George Rice who says penalty
00:36:34kicks Tommy Gemmell Tommy Gemmell had an interesting uh approach to a penalty kick um and
00:36:40it was much the same as Bobby Charlton which was I am going to blast this ball and if you get in
00:36:44the way of it you're in the net which is a it's a great way to take a penalty kick um not many people
00:36:50would save it. Pepe Signore took one step for Lazio. Yes Socrates did that as well. One step I think
00:36:57that's the hardest thing to do in the world just take one step a bit far back from you here yes but
00:37:00Socrates um he used to just take a couple of steps back and then boom into the back of the net
00:37:07cool his ice. Did the goalies have gloves on? It was 1982 the World Cup 1982 when were you born?
00:37:1391. 91 bloody hell all right okay uh let's crack on uh from uh Champions League just a little footnote
00:37:25to what's been happening at Rangers uh Dave King throwing his name in there I don't think he's
00:37:30going to end up with any power it's I think we're in again something that the Rangers fans don't want
00:37:35to see a power struggle. Yeah I don't think Dave King's going to be back in Peter I think that if
00:37:40he was he'd be in by now I think there'd have been talks behind the scene obviously John Gilligan's
00:37:44in filming at the minute um I think they'll look outside the usual suspects they'll try and look
00:37:49and maybe down south or whatever somebody with a good pedigree to come in
00:37:53the CEO and the chairman they're needing both now so yeah it's not ideal Peter you know things on
00:37:58the picture not great at the minute at Rangers um and this is no helping um but they're back
00:38:03into Ibrox which is a big bonus for them and coming up shortly against I think Hibs is the
00:38:08first home league game in a couple of weeks and they'll just be hoping that they can get it right
00:38:12on the park and off the park but I don't think Dave King will be coming back. I think the longer
00:38:16it goes on with four or five investors all on that board the more difficult it becomes to try and
00:38:24get full control of it all it needs in effect I'm not saying it needs a David Murray um because
00:38:30obviously you know that didn't end well but it needs somebody to come in who is a leader who
00:38:35takes control of all of it um again and then has a vision to take them forward with huge investment
00:38:42because if they don't get that and it suddenly becomes that power struggle again
00:38:47you know I don't think they're going to be able to move forward at the pace that the Rangers fans
00:38:52want them to move forward. No I think um Dave King did say that he said that there was a he thinks
00:38:58there's a huge gap in terms of on off the pitch uh comparing ourselves with Celtic so first and
00:39:04foremost they need to get that get that right at the club and first and second to that sorry
00:39:10Philip Camont it was a bit better on Sunday I don't know I don't know what you thought
00:39:14Tam I thought it was a bit better looked Iggy Manny came on who we spoke about last week and
00:39:18really impacted the game so they're two of the main things performance on the part and getting
00:39:23the structure above to a level where it can allow them to slow progress because I don't think it's
00:39:28going to be the progress that the fans are hoping for based on what we were hearing. Yeah well I
00:39:33don't know what are you you speak to Rangers fans as well as me Ryan as well and and Tam what what
00:39:41is the hope I mean everybody said it's a long-term vision here the manager is singing from the same
00:39:47hymn sheet as the former chairman um quite simply he's got to get a team that picks itself near
00:39:55enough so these players have got to integrate themselves um I don't think anybody was expecting
00:40:01you know unbelievable flair up at Tanadise if anything they were thinking this could be a
00:40:05banana skin. Yeah yeah I think even myself I thought it would have been a really tough game
00:40:10for Rangers um but at the end of the day they went up there they get a clean sheet they get
00:40:15the three points and that gives them something to build on that's what they needed especially
00:40:18after the previous few weeks guys coming in now making an impact and in the side which
00:40:23the fans would would have wanted so I think they're in a far better position where they were
00:40:27two weeks ago in terms of players who are going to be on the first on the team sheet now and that
00:40:31gives them that chance to grow as a team. Yeah um Ryan I went up to Aberdeen on Saturday to see the
00:40:38dons um they had flames they had fireworks they had uh they had a 10 minute I've never seen this
00:40:46in a long while they had a 10 minute uh applause the players and the backroom staff for the ultras
00:40:53on in the paddock end to the right they stood there and applauded them for 10 minutes um it was
00:40:58quite unusual I mean I like I like the whole Aberdeen feel of the way they're going with it
00:41:0210 games unbeaten I think that's to be celebrated I mean Kaiser I think's an Aberdeen fan forgive me
00:41:07if you're not Kaiser he says Rangers are in the distance now best they can get this season
00:41:11is third uh I would imagine he thinks like Kenny like Kenny and others who are Aberdeen fans who
00:41:17watch the program that they they are serious uh contenders for third if not second um I think
00:41:26they're a wee bit off it to be honest with you if I was looking in depth at them but
00:41:30they still got 10 wins in a row five in a row in the league I think that's not to be um laughed at
00:41:37I think that if you're an Aberdeen fan you should be as confident as you can be there's no reason
00:41:41why they can't try and go for second especially when Rangers are a little bit um you know there's
00:41:49things happening behind the scenes so the old firm game you know things aren't as rosy as maybe
00:41:54people are making out so Aberdeen it's a great opportunity for them just to keep getting points
00:41:58on the board keep building that gap if they're looking at coming third which would be you know a
00:42:03great season considering where they were from last year they're already you know four or five games
00:42:07in front of um what would usually be the contenders Hearts, Hibbs, Kilmarnock, St Mirren you know those
00:42:14teams are have got off to a slow start so I think there's um yeah huge advantages to being a to an
00:42:21Aberdeen fan and I didn't see that thing at the end but I think the more that the club and the
00:42:24players and you know all of that are in singing off the same hymn sheet going in the same direction
00:42:29I think that's quite hard to stop especially during a season. Yeah I did actually meet uh
00:42:34Nicky Devlin in the car park and I said to him what the what was all that about you know 10 minutes
00:42:42you know all this and he says I was waiting for the 10 game cup to be brought out and he was
00:42:46laughing he said no the manager wants to you know get that bond get that you know connection between
00:42:52the supporters so fair play they created a great atmosphere uh on Saturday it was it was just a
00:42:58it was just great to see it the only thing about it and the playing side of things
00:43:02uh Scott which Muddles stood off them for an hour I mean they just did not press them and the boy
00:43:08Nielsen you would have loved it you would have had the cigars out because the boy Nielsen would come
00:43:13and take the ball off the back four and then boom boom boom pass pass pass move up into the midfield
00:43:18try and link the front and he directed everything coming the other way to defend he was telling them
00:43:23everyone where to go. Yeah well I think in terms of when the game is like that and the team sits
00:43:28off you it can be good in terms of from a deeper area get on the ball but you still need you still
00:43:32need to hurt teams in the final third that's the most important thing I think that's what
00:43:35Kato Wills plan would have been to kind of stifle them in the final third and maybe
00:43:39counter-attack on it because they've got a bit of pace now on the wings but with Aberdeen I think
00:43:43the kind of frustrations the fans have had over the last few years they've they've now got a team
00:43:47they can be proud of but what brings atmosphere and guys to the stadium and is winning games
00:43:53playing game wins do that that everything's perfect when you're winning games and that's
00:43:57where they're at at this moment I think we said when we were talking at the start of the season
00:44:00how they were looking we talked we spoke about McGrath he's been fantastic under this manager I
00:44:05think he's been excellent, Kevin Nisbet coming in but a depth there so Aberdeen are in a great
00:44:11place and game by game I'm sure they'll take it. Yeah I think him at his peak if he was on the
00:44:17Hibs side that you were in you'd have scored more goals. Scott? Yeah I watched Scott obviously
00:44:24working with Hibs TV and working with various companies when Scott was at his peak at Hibs and
00:44:30he was superb. I'd have loved to have been a striker playing in front of Scott. I was lucky
00:44:36if Russell Latty played behind me for a couple of seasons and he was similar he just looked up and
00:44:41played the ball in behind and you just made a run and he'd find you and Scott was a similar player but
00:44:45yeah maybe not similar off the park. Russell was by far a better professional. Yes
00:44:53for me Russell was better to hang about with to be perfectly honest with you but nevertheless.
00:44:59Share any stories? No we're not going to share them we'll get Russell and he can share them.
00:45:03Just before we talk about the fans right across the SPFL here's the headlines for you.
00:45:09Hi there I'm Kerry and here is your daily news headlines on Wednesday the 18th of September
00:45:13brought to you by Arnold Clarke. Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell says he's surprised
00:45:17at the sacking of Sir Johnson boss Craig Levine despite his efforts with the club last season.
00:45:22I believe it's a surprise that that decision with the fact that it's certainly been the worst start
00:45:27to the season that they've had and the fact that Craig's task obviously was to keep them up last
00:45:31season which was exactly what he'd done and avoided the relegation playoffs. I think most
00:45:36days in Scottish football would be a little bit surprised in the timing and how that's came about.
00:45:41And Celtic gear up to take on Slava Bratislava in their opening Champions League game tonight
00:45:45at Celtic Park with Brendan Rodgers adding he's always looking to better his squads.
00:45:49The quality of the team has been really really good the level of performance has been consistent
00:45:54and aggressive and everything that I'd want but I always want more and I want to bring that there
00:46:00into a European stage and for that and you need that that calibre of player so the club have
00:46:08backed me great with that and going forward we want to add a few more.
00:46:13And finally Liverpool manager Arnish Schlott has praised his men having coming away with three
00:46:17points in their Champions League clash with AC Milan last night despite going behind in the first
00:46:21five minutes of the game. I think it was very good to see how they took the game in their hands the
00:46:28players and in the end scored three goals and won with three more. For all the latest breaking
00:46:36headlines be sure to tune in to PL Dead Soccer's YouTube channel and don't forget to download our
00:46:39app which is available on Google Play and the App Store. Yeah thanks to Kerry we were talking about
00:46:45fans and you know so many teams if they get a run of results suddenly the fans come out they respond
00:46:52to it all which incidentally brings me nicely to one of our latest mini documentaries which is
00:46:58coming out Kerry and Blair have been working away on Hibbs the match day experience basically we
00:47:05want to thank Hibbs Football Club they gave us access all areas Tam well we're able just to show
00:47:11you know what Hibbs are doing great work in the background to give so many fans at every level
00:47:17the chance to go in enjoy a bit of food if you're there with your mates and you just want the burger
00:47:22and you want to chit chat and a beer you can get and do that if you want the you know wearing the
00:47:27suit bringing in business associates you've got that level as well and then there of course
00:47:32you know so many uh things that they're doing behind the scenes to generate uh you know not
00:47:37only commercial activity but revenue so that the managers get more money at his disposal it's a
00:47:41it's a great insight into it yeah i'm looking forward to seeing it obviously i've heard a
00:47:45little bit about it the guys were through at the weekend there and listeners there's
00:47:48absolutely no criticism of the way hubs are being run off the park i think in terms of the
00:47:52hospitality you know when i was there they were just concourses with burger stalls and i think
00:47:58it's it's obviously moved on now you've got top class restaurants top class chefs
00:48:03been employed um nice wine you know as you said if you want to go and have a sit down have a top
00:48:08class meal you can do that if you want to just go and have a cup of paint for your pals i think
00:48:11there's one behind the goal they're sorting out you know in the famous five stands so no i i think
00:48:15that the hubs have got a lot of credit for what they've done off the park but everything is
00:48:20obviously judged on the park and if they can get the two of them together if they can get
00:48:23hubs on the pitch doing well and the revenue off the park then it's going to be it's going to be
00:48:27an almightily big club to go and play it and that's that's the key to it all these days guys i
00:48:33mean uh hubs you you can get you can have the meal there's nothing better than fans getting a chance
00:48:40to see a few legends roaming about some former players um pat stanton was 80 he was there he
00:48:46was chatting to people in the lounges i mean that's just a great experience yeah obviously
00:48:50in the meantime they'll know pat really well he'd train at training ground quite regularly when i
00:48:55was young he's a lovely man obviously a hero of the club i think just to echo what tam says in
00:49:01terms of the work that they have done off the pitching and about the stadium it is incredible
00:49:05what they have put their money where their where their mouth is but ultimately on the pitches with
00:49:11the hubs fans will still that that is what they're grasping for this moment and it's a step in the
00:49:16right direction i know we spoke about the two draws previous to the one at the weekend they
00:49:20look as if they're finally turning around and going in the right direction which at the start
00:49:24of the season i believe david gray is the right man for the job and he's certainly been given that
00:49:28wee bit of time and he's got his team together he's got the right selection now couple of guys coming
00:49:32in who came in late in the window who are now affecting games and martin bowers backscoring
00:49:37as well so it's always a good sign yeah absolutely um we like to read out from time to time we like
00:49:42to read out people's real name but as you know on our youtube feed people don't actually give
00:49:48their real name from time to time kenny does because he's a don's fan and he's got his name
00:49:53up there which is fantastic some people don't and then there are some people that it could be
00:49:57deceiving but they're still nice about you scott um pretty paulie paints a picture in my mind uh
00:50:03says uh scotty was a tremendous wee player but your health is your wealth that's true so there
00:50:09you have it uh big fan i also said uh not quite so tell me about me not uh so positive about you
00:50:17tam a springburn burger um which leaves a which leaves a picture in my mind uh and as ever at the
00:50:24moment because people have a perception uh people have a perception sometimes that he's not a right
00:50:29good laugh and good company uh nothing here for ryan that's so early in the morning
00:50:41i was trying to sleep somebody's gonna give us a real insight into you if hearts were winning
00:50:48yeah absolutely um scotland highest uh attendance per capita um i mean the fans turn out aberdeen
00:50:5917 000 there um you know my little fans have made the journey up and it is a trek
00:51:04um you get hibs who'll turn out in great numbers hearts um have backed their club big time
00:51:10st mirren and kelly had a great away support at the weekend for that game too so it's no
00:51:16surprise that we have this situation 18.36 attendees per thousand people that matches
00:51:23across scotland in the top flight 23 24 double the figure welcome by the next closest european nation
00:51:31i think it's you know it's just in the culture i think of scottish people is a saturday is that
00:51:37you know everyone goes to a football game whether that be junior level um in the lower leagues or
00:51:42up into the premier league and i think that should be something that um you know scotland should be
00:51:47proud of yeah but also i think it shows you the appetite is you know things that i see on twitter
00:51:52is it's still too expensive to go to games i think that's something the club should really look at
00:51:57you know we're getting huge amounts of people wanting to come to the games that possibly can't
00:52:02afford it and if you're going with your two kids and your wife you're looking at easy 100 quid
00:52:07just to watch the game food travel you know if you're doing that you know once a week or
00:52:13there's a lot of midweek games it just becomes that they end up picking the games that they
00:52:16want to go to you want to make them that you want to take your kids or your your partner to games
00:52:22and and have it as an an all-round experience but not paying through the nose and i think
00:52:26that's something that you know scottish clubs should be looking at especially away fans um
00:52:31i think away fans can bring a massive atmosphere to the to you know to the home support there's
00:52:37nothing more sort of that gets home fans up as if there's a noisy away support in the corner or you
00:52:42know behind the goal so i think as much as you know it's great that there's so many people coming
00:52:48out i think it's sometimes important that you look at you know financially how much those fans having
00:52:53to pay and something the club should look at yeah i think they do look for incentives from
00:52:57time to time to give fans that special offer motherwell are certainly doing it for the
00:53:02quarterfinal of the premier sports cup against under united in friday because they've been out
00:53:09there leafleting the area trying to get the fans to come out and support the team blair
00:53:15malloy was there to find out all about it with stuart kettlewell the motherwell boss
00:53:21motherwell have the chance to return to hamden for the first time in six years for a cup tie
00:53:25as they take on dundee united on friday night in the quarterfinals of the premier sports cup
00:53:29and manager stuart kettlewell has imparted on his players how much it'll mean to lift a trophy
00:53:34i think sometimes we just look at the monetary aspect of football i think we look at
00:53:38um you know people want security i think people uh looking at win bonuses and you know all these
00:53:44different things but again i was probably brought up in a simpler time where a simpler mindset that
00:53:49your career is defined by success that that's how i look at it i think all the good things in
00:53:53football ie money contracts and all that type of stuff happen off the back of success and and i've
00:53:59always been someone massive into the fact i certainly wasn't the greatest player in the world
00:54:02um but i'm proudest punch of the medals that i was able to win and and promotions and various
00:54:08different things i've been able to achieve and um those are the things that i'm i'm genuinely most
00:54:13proud of the steel men boss also revealed the lengths the club are going to to ensure this
00:54:17place is rocking under the friday night lights we just need to concentrate on being our best
00:54:22version um but of course when you look at the what you know what the community is pouring into
00:54:27at motherwell um we've got umpteen volunteers out just now going door to door handing out flyers
00:54:32leaflets to drum up a bit of support and see if we can get as many people in here as we possibly
00:54:37can we're a proper community club that's what we are and i think that's been really evident over
00:54:42the last few days weeks and where everybody in the community's sort of buying into that excitement
00:54:47of the cup competition and my job is to go and make sure that the players give the the supporters
00:54:51and everyone that comes here to back us on friday something to cheer about. Can these motherwell
00:54:55players take one step closer to lifting their first piece of silverware since 1991? Find out
00:55:00this friday at 7.45 as they take on Dundee United. Did you get a leaflet? Did i get a leaflet?
00:55:07Were you in the kind of motherwell area? No i haven't had one yet but i'll tell you one thing
00:55:11full marks to them. Did they come into the big houses in here? Or are they just the schemes
00:55:15to be fair there is a security gate so which again he's more angry you get in with that
00:55:22clobber i will never go but just on that point though chapping doors just in case you think it's
00:55:29you know i used to sell to glaswegian well remember that yeah but that's not to get people into the
00:55:34ground but you know sir alex ferguson used to go around in the car with a loudtailer
00:55:40in paisley to get the fans to come out and support them at st mirren
00:55:44and in the 70s he would go he went round paisley with a loud hailer just saying come on get out
00:55:52and support st mirren and i think you know 21st century absolutely get out there if you can get
00:55:58you know two or three hundred more fans brilliant yeah all the more fans the better i think for the
00:56:03club i think kettlebell touches on terms of a community club that is what you associate motherwell
00:56:07with i think i think for me it's actually been a reasonably good start to the season for motherwell
00:56:13considering the injuries they had at the start of the season so it's a massive opportunity for them
00:56:17to progress in the cup and the united are obviously looking to bounce back but motherwell they always
00:56:22they always get players through they always we like yeah david turnbulls and boys like that they
00:56:29always every couple of years they produce somebody like that so they do things right motherwell yeah
00:56:34absolutely let's hope it's a huge success with a big crowd turning out there for motherwell
00:56:38dunn united who's winning it i'll go with motherwell yeah i'll go with motherwell yeah i
00:56:43think motherwell as well yeah motherwell yeah we're all motherwell for that one um that's the
00:56:46friday night game the two other games aberdeen against spartans is it 11 in a row yes trying to
00:56:54stay on kenny's good books i would imagine so yeah i think spartans would need to play their
00:56:59maximus to get a result yeah absolutely uh just as we thought we were getting to the end of the
00:57:06program uh without one of those guys he's fired her in there um anyway uh i'll go with aberdeen
00:57:16as well it's the time we knew the day uh rangers against dundee ranges ranges i'm gonna go for an
00:57:23i'm gonna go for rangers yeah okay
00:57:29can you explain that gag and then the last one celtic against falkirk tom
00:57:34yeah celtic i can't see by them but falkirk they're absolutely flying but i think that's
00:57:39maybe just taking it too far to go and beat celtic at parkhead but there's some team
00:57:42yeah um change i'm actually quite looking forward to that game yeah and there's two
00:57:49premiership games ross county against st johnston st johnston obviously alec cleland
00:57:53is going to be in charge there uh where's your money on with that one scott a draw i think ross
00:57:59county after last weekend yeah yeah it was a good performance by them st mirrenhart
00:58:05massive game for stephen how massive is it i think if they get beat i think he could get canned
00:58:11so i'm going to go for some money one you think he's going to lose his job i think
00:58:15you might get banned if they get if they get beat wow that's a call right i guess i think
00:58:20the last two managers have been sacked after defeats to st mirren so whether that's a little
00:58:25omen but yeah i i do think if they don't get something um he could be on a real sticky patch
00:58:33i think it's just the way that they've started this season something doesn't seem to be right
00:58:38i don't know whether it's the manager i don't know whether it's the players it's
00:58:41there just some there seems to be something that's not taken over but um yeah it's a horrible
00:58:47place to go when you're on that run and st mirren i think as much as it pains me to say i think st
00:58:53mirren will win at the weekend wow scott are you going to be the third man up yeah yeah do you
00:58:59think he's on a sticky wicket yeah yeah i do i think will he survive it if he loses well he
00:59:04survive well if he loses i would be i would be i would be surprised depending on the manner of it
00:59:12i think they're going to stick with him um i just i just get the feeling the board's a wee bit
00:59:21yeah absolutely um i think there's a wee bit about them and of course
00:59:25hearts like hibs and other clubs looking for investment from elsewhere um who knows a big one
00:59:32give us your thoughts on that as well just before we go uh last word probably better suited to
00:59:37myself and tam i don't know about you but tam you know i was there with my friends supporting
00:59:43scotland in italy uh i can hear uh nessun dorma being played i can see the slow-mo of toto scalacci
00:59:51running uh away after scoring a goal top goal scorer golden boot winner six goals
00:59:57toto scalacci sadly passed away at the age of 59 yeah we actually spoke about it last week with
01:00:02your first you know remembering football was your first you know game you remember mine was was
01:00:09italian the first big tournament peter where toto scalacci was playing for italy and i don't think
01:00:13he was even the team to start he turned to get injured and he came in and he was like a super
01:00:17subway come on you remember him running away you know the eyes bulging brilliant uh great player
01:00:2259 is no age as well you know it's pretty young peter as well so thoughts about his family and
01:00:28everyone in italy for that yeah he was a big hero for it for italy in that tournament you've summed
01:00:33it up perfectly tam um i think uh juventus and so many other clubs have paid tribute to him
01:00:38we immediately fell in love with toto his desire his story his being so wonderfully passionate
01:00:44and it showed in every game he played um toto scalacci one of the world cup heroes
01:00:51that will never be forgotten by the fans of italy and many more across the world thanks to scott
01:00:57thanks to ryan and tam don't forget in the next couple of days you're going to see the golf
