The High Court in Kuala Lumpur was told that investigations that resulted in Datuk Seri Najib Razak being charged in the RM2.28bil 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial were "shoddy" and "incomplete".

Defence lawyer Wan Azwan Aiman Wan Fakhruddin submitted on Wednesday (Sept 18) that there was a "predetermined intention" to prosecute Najib and accuse him, regardless of the outcome of the investigation.

00:35The defence highlighted that while the investigation paper and proposed charges were submitted
00:40to the Attorney General's Chambers on August 28, 2018, consent to prosecute was granted
00:48on September 19, and Najib's statement was only completed on September 20.
00:54Wan Azwan Aiman also noted that Najib had not been provided clear details of the allegations,
01:01hindering his ability to mount an effective early defence.
01:04Seventy-one-year-old Najib faces 25 charges, four for abuse of power and 21 for money laundering,
01:11all relating to RM2.28 billion.
01:14The abuse of power charges fall under Section 23, Subsection 1 of the MACC Act 2009.
01:22The money laundering charges fall under Section 4, Subsection 1, Subsection A of the Anti-Money
01:29Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.
