00:00Good afternoon, everyone.
00:04I am William Theo, and this is PTV News Now.
00:08Up the newsletter this afternoon, the joint DOH DepEd immunization program for school
00:14kids is green and go and set for October 7, or barely three weeks away, this after the
00:20president gave the thumbs up to earmarking close to eight billion pesos for the DOH's
00:26national immunization campaign in a sectoral meeting with health officials this morning
00:30in Malacañang.
00:32In a presser right after the sectoral huddle, Department of Health Chief Ted Herbosa said
00:37the 7.9 billion pesos the president approved today for the inoculation initiative is 23
00:44percent more than last year's amount and 40 percent higher than the last allocation
00:49in 2021.
00:50Under the Bacuna Escuela jab campaign, kids or students in grade 1, 4, and 7 will get
00:57shots in the arm of vaccines against HPV, measles, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria.
01:04The president urges for a strong media and publicity campaign for greater outreach to
01:09families, mothers, the youth, and kids, and is backed up by a multi-government agency
01:15and private sector support.
01:18This year's Balik Escuela theme, which aligns with the president's Bagong Pilipinas vision,
01:23every Filipino deserves a shot at lifelong protection.
01:27Meanwhile, rap mogul Sean Diddy Combs, or the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, was
01:34arrested Monday in New York by the agents of the Department of Homeland Security on
01:39the strength of a sealed federal grand jury indictment.
01:43The sealed indictment is believed to contain a set of charges on sexual abuse, drug trafficking,
01:49perhaps even gun running raps.
01:52In May this year, Combs was caught in a hotel CCTV draped with only a towel around his waist,
01:59punching, kicking, and dragging his erstwhile girlfriend Cassie Ventura before she could
02:04ride the elevator to the ground floor or lobby.
02:07He then recorded a video right after the incident apologizing for his nasty and repulsive behavior
02:13and settled her lawsuit against him for an undisclosed amount.
02:17Combs, a hip-hop icon and high-profile partying celebrity, is known for his lavish parties
02:23in Hollywood and the Hamptons and his reputation for his run-ins with the law.
02:31In other news, extreme heat has led to a streak of naturally caused fires, raising at 11 million
02:36hectares of Brazilian plantations and forests this year.
02:40As if it were not enough, severe drought has brought widespread misery to millions
02:45of Brazilians, as VOA's Jan Boschat reports from Sao Paulo.
02:51Flames have ravaged Brazil's Amazon rainforest in recent weeks, devastating the rich agriculture
02:58zones of the central west region and even the outskirts of major Brazilian cities, destroying
03:05an area the size of Portugal this year alone.
03:09The blazes intensified during August and September, driven by temperatures far above
03:15average, a severe lack of rainfall and extremely dry air masses, with humidity levels plummeting
03:23below 10 percent in some regions.
03:31The gradual increase in temperature, the reduction in rainfall and the rise in extreme weather
03:36events are part of the broader picture of the global climate change that the entire
03:41planet is facing.
03:42However, tropical countries, particularly Brazil, are much more affected.
03:49Paulo Artacho, a leading climate scientist, has dedicated his life to studying the impacts
03:55of climate change.
03:57He expresses no surprise at the current situation and forecasts an even more challenging future
04:04for agriculture exporters like Brazil.
04:09The future of Brazil, which relies on soybeans and meat exports, will not be as bright in
04:15the coming decades as it has been in the past 30 to 40 years.
04:22Brazil, a major agriculture powerhouse, is the world's largest exporter of soybeans,
04:29coffee, sugar, organic honey, tobacco and meat.
04:33The ongoing fires are already hurting its farm productivity.
04:38In São Paulo, the country's largest sugarcane-producing region, agriculture losses are estimated at
04:45over 400 million dollars.
04:48At the São Paulo government headquarters, a team continuously monitors new fire hotspots
04:54with satellite technology.
04:57Their strategy aims to prevent small heat sources from escalating into large fires and
05:03reduce losses, and not just material ones.
05:08This also greatly impacts people's lives.
05:11School activities are disrupted, hospitals are overwhelmed with respiratory problems,
05:16and children sometimes have to halt their classes.
05:18The fires affect the entire local community.
05:22Last week, a giant smoke cloud covered about 60 percent of the country, drastically reducing
05:28air quality in many major cities.
05:31In the Amazon, a historic drought has made things worse, isolating entire communities
05:38that depend on rivers that are going dry.
05:41Ian Boixá, VOA News, São Paulo.
05:47And that's a wrap for this afternoon's program.
05:49Join me later on for the evening edition of our Newsbreakers, and make it a habit of
05:53staying connected by keeping it here for news you can count on.
05:57I am William Theo, and thank you for watching PTV News Now.
