07:15Huge!
07:20Glacier Canyon is one of the coolest attractions in Grindelwald, Switzerland.
07:25The Swiss Alps might be the top draw in Grindelwald,
07:28but Glacier Canyon is a unique experience
07:31that is affordable and easy to see in just a couple of hours.
07:36We're going to take you on a trip through the canyon
07:39and show you why it's one of the top attractions in the Jungfrau region.
07:45Let's go into the gorge!
07:56Take a walk along an 870 meter long series of bridges, tunnels, walkways and rocky outcrops
08:04as the Lucina River roars through the 250 million year old canyon.
08:10Weaving through the 300 meter high cliffs makes for an amazing afternoon in Grindelwald.
08:17The canyon is located just a 5 minute drive from downtown Grindelwald
08:21and you can easily catch bus 122 from the town center.
08:26It's a really beautiful canyon, the water is rushing through the gorge.
08:31It's just to see the power that this mother nature has to cut through this canyon over the centuries is incredible.
08:37You can go on a little trampoline that goes right out over the gorge.
08:42It's a whole lot of fun.
08:44Here I go!
08:48A highlight of the Grindelwald Glacier Gorge is the 170 square meter spider web spanning across the rushing water.
08:56You get to stand right over the river and it's so cool.
09:02It's a fun adventure for the whole family and kids will especially love it, but it will bring out the kid in you too.
09:12I think I'm in love with the gorge!
09:19And if you're really, really in the mood for adventure, you're going to want to do the canyon swing.
09:26If you've always wanted to do a bungee jump, take a leap off the 90 meter high platform
09:31to plunge into the canyon at 120 kilometers per hour in a wild free fall
09:37before swinging back and forth over the Luchina River.
09:46The walk begins at the visitor center where you go through a museum to see the geology and history of the glacier and canyon.
09:53You then walk through a long tunnel to get to the extraordinary gorge where the sound of water rushing instantly hits you.
10:03So thunderous! It's amazing! The power of this canyon is incredible!
10:10This 870 meter long path, which is about half a mile, is quite easy and is good for the whole family including your family pet.
10:19I would not want to fall down here. There's people with dogs and kids. I'd never do it. I'd never do it. I don't even trust myself.
10:32This is amazing! Just look at this walkway that we're walking on. It's the Nara Gorge. It's truly an adventure.
10:40When I saw the pictures I thought it was maybe for kids or something, but no.
10:45It is a wild gorge.
10:49There are tunnels to go through, lookouts, rocky overhangs, and sitting areas to take in the 300 meter high cliffs.
10:58But the real thrill is to be able to walk so close to this incredible rushing water.
11:04Wow, this was surprising! I knew I was coming to a canyon, but I really didn't know how massive and fast this water is.
11:13If you come out to Grindelwald, get into the Glacier Canyon to see these rapids.
11:20Wouldn't you like to whitewater rapids? Whoa!
11:24Grindelwald Glacier Canyon has attracted visitors since the early 1900s,
11:29and today there is a long walkway secured with metal railings leading all the way up to the top of the canyon.
11:36It's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life,
11:40but it's also a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life.
11:44It's a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life,
11:49and today there is a long walkway secured with metal railings leading all the way to the end of the nearly kilometer long trail.
11:57You can no longer see the glacier, but it's still an amazing attraction.
12:02It doesn't take too long to get to the end, but do take your time to really enjoy all of the views,
12:07so I would recommend giving yourself at least an hour or two.
12:12Make sure to bring an outer layer to keep warm as temperatures cool inside the canyon, regardless of the weather outside.
12:23Into the caverns we go! They've just carved everything out along here and done an amazing job.
12:29You can just hear the power here through the entire walk. Let's go!
12:36There's some fantastic lookouts. Lookout over here, down at the gorge.
12:43Let's see, I think I saw Dave up there. Yes, Dave is up there! Hello Dave! He can't hear me.
12:58We made it to the end! It only takes about 20 minutes to half an hour.
13:03We kind of rushed our way out here, so now we can take our time back.
13:07But we did it, ladies and gentlemen!
13:14Wow!
13:16And that was a trip to Grindelwald Glacier Canyon.
13:33And that was a trip to Grindelwald Glacier Canyon.

33:04Welcome to Factspark.
33:10When observing glaciers from far away, they appear like stationary giants,
33:14which gently rest on their rocky mountain beds.
33:17In reality, however, these vast ice landscapes have annual natural cycles of growth and retreat,
33:23where meltwater is released in the summer and replenished through snowfall in the winter.
33:28The resulting meltwater from the warmer periods is a powerful shaping force of Earth's surface,
33:34which cuts its way even through the hardest of rocks.
33:41One incredible showcase of how much a persistent stream of meltwater can shape the Earth around it
33:47is the Glacier Canyon Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland.
33:52The high alpine environment in southern Switzerland is seeded with some of the largest glaciers of the Alps,
33:57with the biggest one covering over 115 square kilometers of these mesmerizing mountains.
34:03A sidearm of this glacier, which is separated by the 3,900-meter-tall Kleinfischerhorn,
34:09slopes down towards the famous town of Grindelwald, carving an incredible nature spectacle into the mountains underneath it.
34:16This glacier, called the Ischmeer, is a remnant of the last ice age from 18,000 years ago
34:22and has been resting over the Grindelwald valley ever since.
34:26The meltwater of the Ischmeer collects in the river Lütschene,
34:29which starts off under the ice until it rumbles through one of the most incredible canyons of Europe.
34:35The Glacier Canyon Grindelwald is an up to 300-meter-deep gorge with nearly perfectly vertical walls,
34:41which have been carved by the 19,000 liters of roaring meltwater that passes these walls on average every second.
34:48During very warm summers, where the melting rate of the glacier has increased,
34:52the flow rate can even go up to over 250,000 liters per second,
34:57while a single drop of water may seem powerless against a 65-million-year-old mountain range.
35:03Upon collision, every water drop scraps off ever-so-microscopic particles of the rock and carries it downstream.
35:10This process is called erosion, but to create a canyon like the Glacier Canyon Grindelwald, this is not enough.
35:16The continuous erosion is supported by so-called frost wedging.
35:21Due to the high alpine environment in which the canyon lays,
35:24the water which seeps into the tiniest cracks of the canyon walls freezes in the wintertime.
35:30When water freezes, it expands in volume compared to its liquid form and creates immense pressure within the cavity of the rock.
35:37This can ultimately lead to explosions which further expand the canyon in all directions.
35:43Chapter 2. Life around the Grindelwald Glacier Canyon
35:46The village of Grindelwald has its first mentions in the 12th century
35:50and existed as a small village without much connection to the outside world.
35:54In the 18th century, however, when the scenic views of Grindelwald spread around Europe,
35:59the small and sleepy village was finally put on a map and the expansion of infrastructure slowly picked up.
36:05At this time, the Glacier Canyon Grindelwald was still completely filled with ice, which was then exported across central Europe.
36:12Annually, 400 tons of ice were broken off the glacier and transported down with the first railway of the Bernese Highlands,
36:19which was built specifically for this purpose.
36:22With the decline of ice sales due to the invention of mechanical refrigeration,
36:26tourism in Grindelwald reached new heights and hikes on the glacier
36:30belonged to the most sought-after activities in European nobility.
36:34With this increased attention to the area, other touristic ventures started off
36:39and the slowly opening Glacier Canyon was chosen as the perfect location by two Swiss brothers.
36:44A first pier was built which led into the canyon as far as the glacier would allow.
36:49Over time, the glacier retreated further and further into the canyon, which allowed for a gradual extension of the pier.
36:55After 150 years, however, it is safe to say that the glacier retreat easily outpaced the construction of the pier,
37:02which now stands at a length of one kilometer, consisting of concrete and steel bridges,
37:06as well as tunnels which have been dug into the steep canyon walls.
37:10The Ischmer Glacier has long retreated high up into the mountains,
37:14with its foot now laying over four kilometers above the canyon entrance.
37:18Increased global warming has led to the shrinkage and disappearance of most glaciers across the globe,
37:23and the Alps are no exception.
37:25The entirety of the Ischmer is expected to be gone by the start of the 22nd century,
37:30after which the canyon will have reached its maximum size.
37:33Since glaciers fulfill a natural storage function for the environment,
37:37collecting water in the winter and releasing it during the summer month,
37:41the ecosystem in the Grindelwald Valley will undergo a dramatic change once this will no longer occur.
37:47Until then, however, the Grindelwald Glacier Canyon will stay an incredible place to visit.
37:52Add-ons such as a giant swing from the top of the canyon walls
37:56and a rope-made spiderweb for climbing over the roaring waters
38:00lets you see the giant canyon from all angles.
38:03Thanks for watching, subscribe and leave a like if you want to see more like it.
38:07Cheers!
51:42But the love like ours is here to stay
