00:00Mount Kalaon's increased activity and discharges of ash and toxic sulfur dioxide, along with
00:06the unrelenting rain, have put the lives of evacuees in the Kalaon community under great
00:11stress and health risks.
00:14Close to 200 families have sought refuge, while the rain and the rumblings of the volcano
00:19have shut out all the odds of eking out a livelihood from planted crops and backyard
00:24gardening.
00:25Our Ryan Lasigas has the details.
00:28Only seven days have passed since some residents of Kalaon City were evacuated due to the unrest
00:43of Mount Kalaon, but they are already feeling the impact.
00:47Their livelihoods have been devastated by the volcano.
00:50Virginia was supposed to harvest their onions and carrots, but due to the volcano ash, there
00:56are no longer of use.
00:58The number of evacuees continues to rise.
01:01Aside from those living within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, who were the first
01:05to be evacuated, the local government of Kalaon has also ordered the evacuation of residents
01:10living in low-lying areas.
01:13This is because of the continuous rain over Kalaon City brought by the Typhoon Ferdi.
01:17Kalaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas said that more than 200 families, or nearly 700
01:23residents, have already been evacuated.
01:26Evacuees are particularly complaining about the overpowering smell of sulfur dioxide from
01:31the volcano's emissions.
01:33The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has reminded the public living
01:38near Mount Kalaon to limit outdoor activities as much as possible due to the spread of volcanic
01:43smog.
01:44In Phibox's advisory, they stated that if going outside is unavoidable, people should
01:49use N95 face masks and drink plenty of water to reduce throat irritation or constriction.
01:55The local government of Kalaon continues to distribute financial assistance to the affected
02:00residents.
02:01According to Mayor Cardenas, each evacuee aged 18 and above has received P500.
02:08In addition to financial assistance, the LG of Kalaon is also distributing rice and other
02:13necessities.
02:14Aside from the volcano, the LG is also preparing for the effects of the continuous heavy rains,
02:19especially since there is a possibility of lahar flow and flooding.
02:23Our threat again are those people living beside the riverbanks.
02:30There might be a threat that those families or those inhabitants will also be affected
02:38if in the event that the riverbanks overflow.
02:42Some residents in areas affected by volcanic activity admit they are afraid of the potential
02:46dangers.
02:47However, when asked, they still prefer to return to their homes even with the threat
02:52of calamity damage.
02:54Many express feeling more comfortable in their own place and houses rather than staying in
02:59evacuation centers or temporary shelters.
03:02The
03:23capacity of our rescuers through LG is also being tested.
03:30Tested by time, tested on how we are going to anticipate and how to project as to the
03:39areas of responsibilities that are accident-prone areas.
03:44So we need to identify those and give an early warning and early evacuation if necessary.
03:52From Kalaon City, Ryan Lizigas, from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines.
