00:00Live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, it's the 76th Emmy Awards.
00:27Please welcome your hosts, Dan and Eugene Levy.
00:42Welcome everybody to the 76th Emmy Awards, also known as broadcast TV's biggest night
00:52for honoring movie stars on streaming services.
00:56We're very, very excited to be here tonight.
00:59I think most of you know we are not stand-up comedians.
01:02No, in fact, I wouldn't even really call us hosts.
01:05We're more like, what, like actors acting like hosts, which is a huge gamble for us.
01:11But if it goes well tonight, my name is pronounced Levy, not Levy.
01:16And if things go south, my name is pronounced Martin Short.
01:23This is actually the first opportunity that we have had to work together since our show
01:27Schitt's Creek ended.
01:28Unless you count the time you tried to convince Ryan Murphy to cast us as the Menendez brothers,
01:40which...
01:41Well, they weren't twins.
01:42It was a bad idea.
01:43It was a really bad idea.
01:44All right, nevertheless, nevertheless, good to be back by your side.
01:48You know, this is a very special night for me.
01:52You know, I've played a lot of dads in my day.
01:54Yes, I was a dad in American Pie, I was a dad in Finding Dory, and our show, Schitt's
01:59Creek.
02:00Sure.
02:01But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad.
02:12In Schitt's Creek.
02:14Because it got me my first acting Emmy.
02:22Why are we applauding bad parenting?
02:24Anyway, we are off to a really heartwarming start.
02:28Little bit of history here.
02:30Emmy history, the very first Emmys host in 1949 was Walter O'Keefe.
02:37That's true.
02:38And tonight we are making Emmy history as the very first father-son pair to mention
02:42Walter O'Keefe since 1949.
02:45Now, we're all here celebrating tonight because your shows struck a chord with audiences.
02:52Your stories, your characters, we see ourselves in them.
02:56We've all had a teacher that's changed our lives like Quinta Brunson in Abbott Elementary.
03:04Yeah, and we've all had a codependent, borderline, homoerotic relationship with our boss, like
03:13Hannah Einbinder in Hacks.
03:16No.
03:18What?
03:20That's not quite it.
03:22It's not?
03:23We're talking about universal truths.
03:25Okay.
03:26Like how we've all struggled to make friends in a new city, like Carrie Coon in The Gilded
03:30Age.
03:31Yeah.
03:33Sure.
03:36And how we've all done salacious tell-alls with the BBC to get back at a lying, cheating
03:40ex like Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown.
03:42Okay.
03:43You know what?
03:44I just, I don't think you're getting it.
03:49I think I am getting it.
03:50No, no, no, no.
03:51Striking a chord was the point, but anyway, let's move on.
03:54Happily, we haven't even given out a single award tonight and yet Shogun has already made
03:59Emmy history.
04:00At the Creative Arts Emmys held last weekend, the Shogun team took home 14 Emmys, making
04:14it the most decorated show in a single season.
04:19Yeah.
04:22And deservedly so.
04:23I mean, the attention to detail on that show, the creators of Shogun actually had their
04:27scripts translated into Japanese, rewritten, and then translated back into English subtitles
04:34that you missed because you were also on your phone watching Sabrina Carpenter eat a hot
04:38wing.
04:40The Bear is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history.
04:52Now, I love the show.
04:55I love the show, and I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether
05:00The Bear is really a comedy, but in the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making
05:06any jokes.
05:07It's a big year for queer representation on TV.
05:18Nava Mao with her first nomination.
05:24Colin Taylor with her ninth.
05:31And then there's Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer, both recognized tonight for playing
05:34lovers and fellow travelers.
05:38Yeah.
05:41Proving that you can be nominated for playing gay even if you're not straight.
05:53And you know, Son, I'm particularly proud of my streamer, Apple TV+, which continues
06:03to proudly and visibly align itself with the LGBTQ community.
06:14That's not what the plus stands for.
06:16That's not what the plus...
06:21What does it stand for?
06:22I don't know.
06:23You're the one with the show on there.
06:26Apple TV+.
06:27Yeah.
06:28Paramount+.
06:29Disney+.
06:30ESPN+.
06:31All also not directly affiliated with the community.
06:39Well that I knew.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Yeah.
06:42I just...
06:43Reservation Dogs has four nominations tonight.
06:51After three excellent seasons of widespread critical acclaim, they finally received a
06:57nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
07:00Yeah.
07:01So you might say the Academy voters found a show that's been creatively thriving for
07:08years and said, hey, look what we discovered.
07:12Baby Reindeer's nominated for 11 Emmys this year.
07:16Sure is.
07:18The show was both frightening and oddly relatable for everyone out there whose parents still
07:24haven't mastered the art of texting.
07:27Like this text I got from my dad about tonight's show.
07:32Let's host Emmys.
07:33Colin Farrell will be there.
07:35You still have crush?
07:37I didn't think these were going public.
07:40Or this one.
07:42Walter O'Keefe joke.
07:43Too mean?
07:45Sent from my iPhone.
07:47You don't even own an iPhone.
07:49What does it matter?
07:50What does it matter?
07:51And this last one.
07:53Best ramen near me.
07:54Okay.
07:55I think that was just a mistake.
07:56I think you were just Googling something.
07:57I was hungry.
07:58All right.
07:59And I'm still hungry.
08:00There are 59,000 more where those came from.
08:01All right.
08:02Okay.
08:03Got it.
08:04Before we get to our first award tonight, we just wanted to chat about acceptance.
08:08Please.
08:09In what can only be described as a cruel joke, two Canadians have been put in charge of playing
08:14you off tonight.
08:15Canadians don't like interrupting anybody.
08:19It goes against our nature.
08:20Confrontation in general is anxiety-inducing, especially for my 77-year-old father, okay?
08:26I don't like it.
08:27The man is frailer than he looks.
08:28He gets palpitations from time to time.
08:30I'm hearing about tendinitis.
08:31Okay.
08:32That's good.
08:33That's good.
08:34No, no.
08:35The point, the point, the point is.
08:36Yeah.
08:37If you're going to say anything meaningful or emotional or, God forbid, political, just,
08:41you know, keep it short because the pressure alone on me.
08:43Yeah.
08:44I don't want to be alarmist here, but having to cut you off could kill this man.
08:47Okay.
