00:00The Cedric Maxwell podcast is brought to you by Price Picks and the Game Time app.
00:19All right, it's a brand new episode of the Cedric Maxwell podcast. I am Joseph
00:22Pavone alongside, of course, Cedric Maxwell. And we got our special guest,
00:25A. Sherrod Blakely in the building. One third of the NBA Big Three podcast. And of course,
00:32reporter for CLNS Media. How you doing, Sherrod? What's going on, man?
00:34Wonderful.
00:34Summer's winding down here. How's everything, though?
00:37Good.
00:37Wonderful, man. And I'm just glad to see you are up and up and up, right? I mean,
00:42you're still in the wilderness. You know, I'm glad to see you still alive.
00:47It's still summering out here, man.
00:50Joseph, enjoy these final days.
00:51Brothers in the woods, in the wilderness. I'm just not used to seeing this.
00:55Usually, we like go through the woods as we're trying to get somewhere else.
01:00That's like the path that we got to take.
01:02But you don't settle here, right? I got you.
01:04Nah, nah. I mean, you got the tent up. You got a little net behind you, man. You're like,
01:08you're good. You're straight. You set up shop.
01:11The other way, they use one thing right now. They use one word,
01:14homeless. That's what they use to say.
01:17The fancy.
01:18Nah, the tarp. It's the tarp.
01:21If we want to get fancy, we'll say an encampment.
01:24Yeah, but we got to stay in. Let me make sure we put it out there, Josue.
01:28Your parents set up a tent in their backyard.
01:33And then you go out there and utilize it as your station.
01:39No, it's my studio. It's my summer studio.
01:42He's not broadcasting from an encampment out west. Nah, he's good.
01:47It's my summer studio. We're weeks away from the preseason, and we got plenty to talk about, man.
01:51We got Jason Tatum's recent appearance on The Tonight Show, starring Jimmy Fallon.
01:56Said a lot of interesting stuff on there.
01:58Also got some talk from out of Minnesota with their superstar, Anthony Edwards.
02:03Pretty much telling everyone like, man, if we can make a significant leap this year, look out.
02:08And of course, with that being said, as a response, or what people are speculating as a response
02:14to what Jason Tatum said with Jimmy Fallon is Kyrie Irving changing his picture on IG.
02:21I also got to get into that.
02:22And lastly, man, we got to talk about, we got to talk about Unc, man.
02:25We got to talk about Shannon Sharp, right?
02:26We got to talk about his appearance, his IG live, his one minute and 13 seconds.
02:33Hold on. I got to make sure my phone is up. Hold on.
02:37So what was that?
02:40Make sure you don't get hacked. Make sure you're good, right?
02:42These are going to be the death of somebody.
02:46We always say it, these things are dangerous, rather dangerous.
02:52This is the one thing that you've been on and we've all been on these before where you're going,
02:56you have it in your hand, you're talking to somebody, you're going,
02:59damn, where's my phone at?
03:01I need to find my phone.
03:02Somebody said, what are you talking about?
03:05Oh, I got it right.
03:08Yeah, that's what happens.
03:09Serious?
03:10All right.
03:11But first and foremost, yeah.
03:12So Zaytion Tatum hops on with Jimmy Fallon and he's talking about a, or predicting rather,
03:19a rematch against the Dallas Mavericks in 2025.
03:23How do you guys feel about that?
03:24Because there's a lot of hungry teams out West, man.
03:26There's a lot of guys, a lot of teams out there that see a path.
03:29And I don't know, man.
03:30I don't know if it's going to be as easy for Dallas, you know, compared to other teams.
03:34I don't see it happening.
03:36I just don't.
03:37I think there are too many teams that are too motivated, too talented.
03:41And to, you know, when you look back at Dallas's path there, I mean,
03:45they got some breaks that obviously you cannot bank on getting those same breaks a second time.
03:51And people say, well, what about the Celtics?
03:53There's a problem with that argument though.
03:55The Celtics gave every single team in the league a shot to knock them off
03:58throughout the regular season.
03:59And last I checked, they had the best record.
04:02So if you got the best record throughout the regular season
04:05and you go into the playoffs,
04:08I think it's pretty safe to assume that you expect to be the last team standing,
04:13considering you were the last team standing with the best record before it started.
04:16But as far as out West, I look at Oklahoma City.
04:19I look at Denver is always going to be in the mix.
04:22Minnesota, they're a good team as well.
04:25And Dallas, yeah, they're going to be all right.
04:28But I don't feel they've done enough to where you feel as though they are going to be the
04:32team that will clearly and undeniably be that team.
04:36And Tatum, I just remember listening to him,
04:38and Tatum was struggling to come up with a damn team.
04:40Because real talk, I think Tatum was thinking,
04:42it don't really matter who's coming out West.
04:44Like, I haven't even thought about this.
04:46I'm just thinking about getting back to the finals, right?
04:48Because I remember watching it and I'm looking at it because he asked him the question twice.
04:52And the first time Jason was like, I don't know.
04:54I don't know.
04:55Translation, it really don't matter because we're better than all the squads.
04:59But let me just give him an answer because he's going to let me go.
05:02Look, you want to have some big balls?
05:05That would have been big balling time right there if you said that.
05:08I don't give a damn who it is coming out.
05:10We coming out the East and the rest of the East.
05:12There's a gap right now.
05:13I wish you just said, hey, there's a gap, all right?
05:16There's a significant gap.
05:17So let's see who can catch up.
05:19Let's see who could catch up.
05:20That would have been, yeah.
05:21I mean, when your head coach is talking about, forget about the bulls on the back.
05:24Keep that crosshairs on us all the way.
05:28Bring that heat.
05:29We want it.
05:31When your head coach is talking, that kind of noise.
05:33Yeah.
05:35I'll tell you what.
05:36All this talking.
05:37You better be able to talk and then walk it at the same time.
05:42There are guys right there.
05:43They do.
05:44You know, but the only thing I say about that, the Celtics always have a bullseye
05:48on the back because they're the Boston Celtics.
05:51So it's not going to be that much different.
05:54But if you're the world champions, there's still a little bit extra motivation for teams
06:00to try to knock you off.
06:03But again, I'm like the rest of you guys.
06:05If the Celtics are healthy and playing that kind of basketball, you tell me the teams
06:11right now that are going to catch up.
06:13Are we talking about Philadelphia being that team?
06:15I don't think so.
06:16The Knicks are a good team.
06:18New York's interesting.
06:20New York's interesting, but if Porzingis is playing, that could be a whole other set of
06:28problems for the Knicks and anybody out there, because that seven-footer creates a situation
06:34that is damn near impossible, impossible to stop.
06:38And that was even with Joker last year.
06:41Joker, he went at Porzingis, took him on the inside, posted him up, banged him around.
06:46But when Porzingis can step out from 25 feet away and has the ability to put the ball on
06:51the floor and get to the cup, boy, and we're not even talking, he's not your main weapon.
06:58That's your fourth option.
06:59That's your third or fourth option.
07:00He's not your main weapon.
07:03That's what the problem is for the rest of this league right now.
07:06The main weapons are Tatum and Brown.
07:09They're going to get better this year.
07:12Derek White was damn near all-star.
07:16Drew Holiday, Olympian, two-time champion, on a roll right now.
07:21I mean, health-wise, if this team could stay where they're at, the only thing that bothered
07:27me, I saw a couple things on the internet here lately saying that Al Horford was retiring.
07:33Al Horford's gone.
07:34He's not coming back.
07:35Who said that?
07:36People are still saying that?
07:37Did anybody talk to Al's wife?
07:39He got 10 million dollars coming this year.
07:41What the hell is that?
07:44What are you talking about?
07:45They just brought the Larry O'Brien trophy to the Dominican Republic, man.
07:48He ain't going nowhere.
07:49He ain't even thinking about retiring.
07:50He brought the trophy with Joe Mizzoula and the trophy, so come on, Al.
07:54That's right, and the head coach.
07:55He's like, let me go on vacation real quick, coach.
07:57That's a great moment for him.
07:58And he damn near needed to have that whole plane for the sizes of his family.
08:02Facts.
08:03Oh, yeah, that's true.
08:04Good point.
08:05He got a little Hartford army that comes through there all the time, which is funny to see.
08:10They're the cutest kids.
08:12The wife is gorgeous, but, man, I mean, it's a bunch of them.
08:16And the nanny, I mean, he has to have about six to eight chairs up there right behind
08:21the bench, which is crazy.
08:23Yo, his biggest fan, Ian, man, he can pass for like 13, 14.
08:28That boy's eight.
08:30That's a big family.
08:31Yeah, that is a big, big family.
08:34He's going to be big.
08:35He's going to be handsome as hell.
08:37I mean, he looks like his mini-me.
08:41Those Celtic kids right now, when you're talking about Tatum's kids and now Harper's kids,
08:46there's some handsome lots of young men that are coming up through the ranks, boy.
08:50It's going to be tough.
08:52Well, the reason I said New York is interesting is because they're the only team that I look
08:56at that has the kind of depth that could sort of compete with the Celtics.
09:01I'm saying they're on another level or even the same level, but they can compete.
09:05When I look at a team like the Dallas Mavericks, I don't see that at all.
09:08I mean, that's something we learned from the NBA finals, from the playoff.
09:12They're just not a really deep team.
09:14And OK, you add Klay Thompson, but what about the depth?
09:17What about the secondary guys?
09:19I just think that's a part where the Celtics have a mile advantage compared to these other teams.
09:26I want to ask you guys, well, here's one of the problems I think you have with the Knicks right
09:29now, and people aren't going to talk about it, but Hardenstein is going to be a big hole for
09:36those guys because he did all the dirty work.
09:41He got offensive rebounds.
09:43He only got better.
09:45And when you lose that dirty, who's going to be able to do what he's able to do for
09:50the New York Knicks?
09:52And they don't have that.
09:54And that's going to be a problem.
09:55They can score the basketball.
09:57But now to defend the basketball, that's going to be tough.
10:00Yeah, because I mean, you can't bank on Mitchell Robinson being that dude because
10:03you might as well put him and Rob Williams in the same boat because he's incredibly talented,
10:09loving when they play.
10:10If only we could have him play more.
10:13They just, and that's a problem for New York.
10:15I mean, Hardenstein, to me, when you look at the run that they went on, as great as
10:20Brunson was, because he can ball out, to me, Isaiah Hardenstein was the difference in them
10:26being able to advance from one round to the next because he does all the things that no
10:31one wants to do.
10:32But your coach is telling you, we need someone to do this.
10:35And he's like, I got it.
10:36You need me to go out and get you 18, 19 rebounds?
10:38I can do that.
10:40I don't need to get any shots other than the offensive rebounds I grab.
10:42And when I get them, I'm kicking them out to Jalen and let him do what he do.
10:46They don't have anyone like that.
10:47And they're a better team now.
10:50Not without him.
10:51They're a better team as far as the things that they've added in the offseason and recited
10:55guys.
10:55But overall, I think that they've taken a step back by not finding a legitimate replacement
11:00for him.
11:00Well, I don't know who you find to do those jobs because that job is a hard job.
11:09But not a lot of people want to do that particular job.
11:12Most guys in the NBA, they want to put up there.
11:15I got three.
11:16I made three.
11:17And the dance and all this other kind of stuff.
11:20That job was a selfless job that you had to get in there.
11:25And your teammates understood it.
11:27Media understood it.
11:28But not a lot of other people.
11:29But obviously, one team understood it was OKC.
11:33Then OKC was the one that gave him all that money to do something that's going to make
11:38them better.
11:39That's going to make them a lot better because they have that guy that Chet Hunkeridge was
11:43a nice player.
11:44But he wasn't physical.
11:46Hardenstein was physical as hell.
11:48And you couldn't keep him off the glass.
11:52Yeah, that's true, man.
11:52That's a come up for OKC for sure.
11:54They got that, too.
11:55That's another team.
11:56I thought the guy that New York, to me, would have been a great replacement.
12:00I don't think he's as good, but I think it would have made a lot of sense.
12:02It's Andre Drummond.
12:04That's literally the one thing that even at his advanced stage, that's the one thing he
12:08can do still.
12:09He can get you rebounds.
12:10You need someone who, yeah.
12:12I mean, he's going to want a few more touches than Isaiah.
12:15But you know what?
12:16If you can go out and give me 10, 11 rebounds and I got to give you the ball like two or
12:19three more times than the other dude, I can do that.
12:22The only reason I think that it's different because, and I'm not saying anything bad about
12:27Drummond because I think Drummond is a legitimate, solid backup now.
12:32But when I look at Hardenstein, what's his basketball IQ?
12:37His basketball IQ was off the charts with his building.
12:44He maximized everything that he did well.
12:47He didn't try to take no threes.
12:49He was just trying to get a rebound.
12:51He had the little short shots on the inside.
12:54He said vicious picks and he knew how to play on the defensive end.
12:59We've never thought of Andre Drummond being a defender in any time we've ever seen him
13:05in this league.
13:05He's never been a defender.
13:07Now he'll make some steals, but he's not going to really change the dynamics of what other
13:12guys are doing if he's guarding them.
13:14Yeah.
13:14Plus Hardenstein is five years younger.
13:16He's only 26.
13:17Andre, 31 is not old, but 26-year-old Hardenstein, I mean, he got another good eight, nine, 10
13:24years in the league.
13:24Andre is one.
13:27I feel like he's like 38.
13:29I know.
13:30What you said, 31, he's 31 years old.
13:33I was at 32.
13:35That was about my last call for alcohol.
13:37I was in the club.
13:40You got any more drinks?
13:43No more drinks.
13:44You're good.
13:45You're good.
13:47You didn't get your last drink.
13:50You got your last swig of Dr. Pepper or you got fries or something like that to go.
13:55God, you were good.
13:56But at 32, I was done.
13:59And now it is the difference in day and night when we look at these guys and we think, when
14:06the guy is 31, 32, he's in his prime right now.
14:11I know.
14:11That's crazy.
14:12When I was playing, that was the end.
14:14They were rolling you out there.
14:15Where's the next pastor at?
14:17Or where's the next, we're going to take you, you're that dog that you have that's been
14:22limping and dad took Lassie out today and he didn't bring him back.
14:29What happened?
14:34You got his collar in your hand.
14:36What do you mean you don't know?
14:39He gone.
14:40It's the end of the line.
14:41Right.
14:43So this thing with age, I think is amazing to me.
14:46LeBron has done all these things that change what we believe, especially with drumming
14:53and the fact that if you can't defend, which is not a defender and you don't have three
14:58point ability, a lot of times in this league now, you're not as important because those
15:04are the things you have to do.
15:06You have to be able to knock down the three consistently.
15:08You have to be able to defend the basketball consistently.
15:11And if you don't do those things, you can rebound all you want to.
15:14I'm not sure what that gives you.
15:15And I'm not sure.
15:16And I've never known drumming to be this excellent passer.
15:21Right.
15:21Right.

16:48Run your game.
16:49So like I said at the top, man, in light of Tatum's comments the next day, I want to say
16:56maybe less than 48 hours later, Kyrie Irving changed his Instagram picture, profile picture
17:02to him standing on the Celtics logo, which of course got Celtics fans all in his mentions
17:07about this speculated or prediction of a rematch in 2025.
17:13But how do you guys feel about that, man?
17:15I don't hate it.
17:16Like, look, if he wants to get his team all riled up and everything, and I've already
17:20read about the Dallas Mavericks already doing offseason workouts out in L.A., got Clay Thompson
17:24in the mix and all that stuff.
17:25Hey, good for them.
17:26He's supposed to be, Kyrie's supposed to be back for training camp after getting surgery
17:29on his left hand.
17:30Good for them, man.
17:31But again, I just don't, I don't know.
17:33I think it's gonna be really hard for them to get back to the NBA finals when you look
17:36at some of the teams that we just mentioned standing in their way in the Western Conference.
17:39I don't care how much time you spend in the gym.
17:42How many, how many sand dunes and hills you run out and wherever you, you know, want to
17:47be.
17:48The bottom line is this, Derek White, Drew Holiday, Jalen Brown.
17:55Okay, step on lucky all you want to.
17:56You still won't have to deal with them three.
17:58And we ain't talking about Tatum.
17:59We ain't talking about, you know, Porzingis.
18:01We ain't talking about a head coach who is clearly getting better from one year to the
18:06next, to the next, who already got a chip under his name and already come to the game
18:10with a chip.
18:11Talk about, he ain't talking about like Bulls.
18:13I, he talked about like crosshairs or bring it.
18:16You have a team Kyrie that wants to smoke.
18:20They literally are begging you to say, please, please begging you bring this smoke.
18:26And the reason why, because they got a team full of flamethrowers.
18:30They got a team.
18:30I mean, you go one through eight, every single one of them can light you up easily.
18:36And then you add a guy named Lonnie to the mix.
18:40Oh, God.
18:43Lonnie is that dog that people don't realize is a dog.
18:46Cedric, that boy got dog.
18:49He's got the dog that people don't know about.
18:53And he's getting paid.
18:54And he's underpaid.
18:57Oh, there's 31 teams.
18:58Listen, he's got, he's got a lot to prove.
19:06Is that the thing we go?
19:09Yes, because that's, that's, that's what people are going to be doing when they see
19:12Lonnie drop like 25 on Brooklyn, drop 28 on Dallas.
19:18Just for, we're going to show you just where I'm going to show you something that you don't
19:22know.
19:22This is really good.
19:23This is a black father when his son does something that he didn't like.
19:31Oh, that's what that is.
19:34I'm telling you, man, you look at that dude.
19:37He's been there with that going.
19:40It's not, not, not, it's going to hurt me more than it's going to hurt you.
19:44Is it?
19:45Not that one.
19:45Not that one.
19:46Not that one.
19:47You're going to get that.
19:51And my mom, yeah.
19:53But you never believe that though.
19:54It's going to hurt me more than it hurt you.
19:56No, it ain't.
19:58Or you think, you think I want it?
19:59You think I want to do that?
20:00Yeah, I do, dad.
20:01I do.
20:02Why else did you do it?
20:04Oh, well, that's, that is what they should have said back in the day.
20:09They, they, they didn't get that line because back in the day, if you had a black father
20:14in the house with you, you ain't want that smoke.
20:17You ain't want, you didn't want to see, you didn't want to see that clock turn to five
20:23o'clock because you know, he's walking in that door and all, all hell was about to break loose.
20:29When you hear the keys jingling.
20:30Oh, man.
20:32Or even before that, when your mom just say, well, where did your dad get home?
20:35When you hear the key jingling.
20:39Hey, it was like this.
20:42You know, we have a fence like this.
20:49You ain't even got hit yet.
20:52Oh, see?
20:52No, no, that's you on the other end of that, of that exchange.
20:54I can tell Max, that's you.
20:56Oh, there's no question.
20:58There was no question.
21:00Manny Maxwell was in the military and he was a gunny sergeant and he was coming home every day
21:07at five o'clock.
21:08He rolling in there precisely.
21:10And there's some shit that jumped down.
21:12My mom or my, or the woman who was keeping us already told him.
21:17Now you're lucky.
21:19At 1700 hours, you knew what's up.
21:20Yeah, you just gone on, you know what, gone on back to the room, just gone on back there,
21:26you know, gone back.
21:27It's about, it's about to be off.
21:29And I can say it's about to be all that popping.
21:38Oh, you're going to call who?
21:40Social?
21:40Who?
21:41For that?
21:41Well, who are you going to call?
21:42Oh, I didn't even drop that.
21:43I don't know.
21:44I wasn't that kid.
21:48I knew better.
21:50The only person you wanted to call at that time was Jesus.
21:53That's all.
21:57All right.
21:58Move it on, man.
21:59You guys give us, give us flashbacks here.
22:01Chill.
22:01All right.
22:02So one guy who definitely wants all that smoke is all-star Anthony Edwards, man.
22:06He was captured in a Timberwolves video during a recent workout.
22:10He's saying to everyone that, man, pretty much look out if us three, and that's considering him,
22:16Nas Reed and Jayden McDaniels.
22:18He says, if us three can be consistent, y'all are in trouble.
22:21We just got to grow early.
22:23If we could somehow become older than we are early, we got to grow early.
22:29That's pretty much what he said.
22:30That's exactly what he said, actually.
22:32And it's a good, it's a funny way to put it.
22:34But then when you look at the way this team is built, these three individuals, like 25 and under,
22:41there's a window there for sure.
22:43But I don't know how they reach their full potential this year.
22:46I don't know if that happens.
22:47It's not about those three, because they're going to play well.
22:50It's about the big guy.
22:52It's about Cat, Karl-Anthony Towns.
22:55Karl-Anthony Towns is the key, because he can disappear on you.
22:59And you can't have people disappearing in the playoffs.
23:01I know that boy.
23:03I know that boy is going to bring it.
23:04You're going to bring it every night.
23:06But Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert.
23:10Rudy Gobert, yeah.
23:11Those two aren't playing well.
23:14You can have all the point guard stuff you want to, razzle dazzle.
23:17You ain't going nowhere.
23:19And that was a problem for them last year.
23:21When Rudy Gobert played well, when Karl-Anthony Towns played well,
23:25they won basketball games.
23:27When they didn't play well, and he didn't play well in the last series, they got smoked.
23:33The problem for them, and I agree with you, Max.
23:37I'm going to be more specific, though.
23:38I'm going to put it on Gobert.
23:40And I'm going to tell you why.
23:41Because Gobert is supposedly this great, all-time great defensive player.
23:46And yet, how many times have we seen Minnesota literally have to get his
23:50seven-foot-and-some-change ass off the floor because he is a defensive liability?
23:54How can you be the defensive player of the year for the season,
23:57and yet there are matchups where you are a defensive liability?
24:01Ben Wallace never had that issue.
24:02Dikembe Mutombo never had that issue.
24:05When you start talking about the all-time great, elite defensive bigs,
24:08they never had that issue.
24:11Let me, let me, let me.
24:12Luka put him on blast, man, or exposed him, rather.
24:16That's great that you say that.
24:18But if Dikembe was playing this era, he might be a liability.
24:22But you know what, though?
24:24He might be a liability from the three-point line.
24:26Ben Wallace wouldn't have been because Ben could move his feet.
24:29But Dikembe, you put him in a pick-and-roll situation with the three-point shooters,
24:35they didn't have those during the time he played.
24:38The guard came off that pick, he was coming right towards Dikembe.
24:42The guard coming off the pick now, he's flaring out, and it's time to dance.
24:46And Dikembe didn't want all that smoke from that era.
24:49Right.
24:50But the thing, but here's the thing that, to me, I can't understand.
24:54Rudy should be more nimble than Dikembe.
24:57Rudy looks as though he should be a little bit more athletic and able to deal with that better.
25:02He's, and he's not.
25:03And that's why I have never voted for Rudy Gobert, first-team All-NBA defense, never.
25:09Because I just, I, if I got to get your ass off the floor,
25:14and you want to be the best at that position, at that particular position,
25:17doing what I shouldn't have to get your ass off the floor for, how does that equate?
25:22That's why, to me, Minnesota is never going to win a championship unless they hit,
25:26to me, they hit the absolute perfect storm,
25:29where they play a team that does not have a big, that can knock down threes.
25:33Because as long as they're playing teams that have one cat who can stretch the floor
25:37and put Rudy in pick-and-roll situations where he's got to go out and guard somebody,
25:41they're not going to win that series.
25:43Well, you might be right about that.
25:46But at the same time, I think you have equalized in the fact that
25:50there's a good place to put him on the bench and have Nas Reed in the game.
25:55I would.
25:56And when you have, you have him with the ability to knock down
25:59the three to defend the three-point line, and you have Cat playing the center,
26:03because you don't have any dominant centers these days.
26:06The only one you think about is the Joker.
26:08Other than the Joker, who's going to back you in and, you know, do what he wants to do,
26:12maybe you think about Embiid.
26:15Those are the two.
26:16The game has changed.
26:17So if you're the coach, that might be your decision.
26:22I would.
26:22To me, it's easy.
26:23Put Rudy right here.
26:24Rudy, come over here.
26:25Take a seat.
26:27Grab this towel.
26:28Hold this towel.
26:28And when we start doing things, get it going.
26:30Yeah.
26:31That's your job.
26:32Pauly Fufrance, your ass right here, okay?
26:35I don't know if that's a preachy word, but damn it, I'm using it, okay?
26:40Rudy, that play time, say bonjour to that play time, Rudy.
26:44Bonjour to the play time.
26:48Or Cat.
26:48Cat's been in the league long enough, man.
26:50Like, you would think he would, because think about it, what he does to opposing teams and
26:54opposing defenses, you would think that he would, okay, I got to make sure I come correct on
26:58defensive end of the floor and be able to defend the perimeter.
27:01Cat's problem is, Cat doesn't think the game out.
27:06How many times we've seen him make the most stupid fouls in a situation that is so obvious
27:12and then throw his hands up like, I didn't do that.
27:15Oh, he's always doing that.
27:17He's made some of the dumbest, how many times we've seen him out of a game for trying to
27:22make a steal on a guard, bringing the ball down the floor.
27:25That's not going to happen.
27:26He doesn't play the game smart.
27:29He should be a lot smarter.
27:30His basketball IQ should be higher in what he can do and what he can't do and stay out
27:35of foul difficulty.
27:36I could let a guy score instead of you being sitting on the bench and not having anything
27:41to do with the game.
27:42So I'm sorry.
27:44You could talk about those three guards all you want to, and I do believe that Anthony,
27:51he's going to be a hell of a player, but you're going to have to have those other guys, those
27:56swing guys.
27:57It's like, you know, it's like the election right now.
27:59The damn swing States.
28:00That's what we're looking at.
28:01We looking at Trump.
28:03Trump doesn't even come right now to Massachusetts.
28:06He don't even go near California.
28:08He's not going to waste his time.
28:10It's the swing States.
28:11Like he's here in North Carolina.
28:13Kamala's here in North Carolina.
28:15They go to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, all those.
28:19So, so, you know, we, the swing players are going to be the difference in what they do
28:24as a team.
28:27That's a good way to put it.
28:28You know, it's interesting though, because going into the, the, the off season and the
28:32second apron and all that, like there's so many like restrictions for teams that they,
28:35they can't just go out and get like a sixth or seventh man or a solid guy.
28:38You know what I mean?
28:39Or you can't just go out and buy one like you're used to, right.
28:41Whereas the Celtics set this thing up, but they, I was just going to say, Max, they set
28:46this thing up years ago.
28:48Whoa.
28:49They extended them, right?
28:50Yeah.
28:50That's another, that's another part of this rod.
28:52Yeah.
28:52A lot of dough being tossed around, but they had to, they had to trade for you, Derek White.
28:56You had to trade for, you know, when they traded out to get Al back, he had to trade
29:00a lot of those future first round picks that let's face it, Danny would never do.
29:05But as soon as Brad got in charge, he was like, man, let's turn these future first round
29:10assets into players that can bring a championship.
29:13You know what I mean?
29:13And that's what happens.
29:14Danny is my guy and I grew up with Danny and he did a hell of a job when he was here with
29:20the Celtics.
29:20Oh, of course.
29:21But Brad Stevens, man, everything he has touched has turned to fricking gold.
29:28Cause who would have picked, who would pick
29:30He's batting a thousand, Max.
29:31Who would have taken Joe Mizzou?
29:34All those coaches you have over there.
29:37You take back row Joe.
29:38Yeah.
29:39Why do you take Joe Mizzou though?
29:41And you got Damon Stoudemire over there.
29:43You got these other couple.
29:44Why are you taking Joe Mizzou?
29:47Did it work?
29:47Hell yeah, it worked.
29:49Go out and say, I'm getting Derek White for two first round draft picks.
29:54Did it work?
29:56Did he know?
29:56And then on top of that, you gotta be lucky too.
30:00How did he know that Drew Holliday was going to be available after he traded away the best
30:04offender the Celtics have had in years and Marcus Smart.
30:07Damn lucky.
30:08He needs to be unique.
30:10If you go to a casino, take Brad with you.
30:13If you throw a dice, you let Brad blow on the dice or spill on them or whatever it is.
30:20You let Brad have the damn dice.
30:22Okay.
30:22I'm going to sit there.
30:24We're rolling with Brad because he has been unbelievable.
30:27Nobody talks about that for the pieces he's put together.
30:31Joe Mizzou to come in.
30:33And this is after everybody was damn near in tears.
30:38When you lost E-Mac, E-Mac, E-Mac, people were like,
30:42oh my God, what's going to happen?
30:44I remember in the middle of the night, and then we all got that call going,
30:49Celtics are fired right now.
30:51E-Mac, do you know anything?
30:54I don't know shit.
30:55I don't know nothing.
30:57What do I know?
30:57Sherrod, Max called me at like 11 o'clock that day.
31:01I'm like, Max, you tell me what happened, man.
31:04What you mean?
31:06That was a crazy night.
31:08That was a wild night.
31:10You're closer than we are because you do the beat and you're around.
31:16Did you have any, when it happened, did you have any?
31:20And you can be honest with us.
31:22You're our boys.
31:23Did you have any idea when this happened?
31:26Did I what?
31:27Say that again.
31:28Did you have any idea what had happened?
31:32No.
31:33Okay.
31:33No.
31:34The thing about E-Mac was that I didn't think they would have the cojones of firing,
31:41to be honest with you.
31:42Neither did he, Sherrod.
31:45I mean, the dude went to the damn finals his first year.
31:49And it's Boston.
31:50It's the Celtics.
31:51Not his first year in Boston.
31:53His first year as a head coach.
31:56It's just like, do I think it was right that he was feeling himself like that?
32:01No.
32:01Do I understand it?
32:03Absolutely.
32:04I mean, to me, it's like being thrown into a team and say, you're going to be our starting
32:09quarterback.
32:10We're just going to, this would be a year of growth.
32:11And next thing you know, you playing in the Super Bowl as maybe like a late first round
32:17or late draft pick, but you're in the Super Bowl as a rookie.
32:20That next year, you're going to be feeling yourself in a way that you weren't before
32:25because it's just like, shit, if I can do this and I didn't really know exactly what
32:30I was doing, because everything was like, basically reading the react.
32:33Now that I know what this looks like.
32:35Oh my God.
32:36Well, let me ask you this.
32:38What was your reaction though?
32:41Because when you got the, you got the call just like us and somebody had to call you
32:44and say, yo man.
32:46Like what's your honest opinion?
32:49What was your, you're like, huh?
32:52When they said that he was fired, I'm thinking like, okay, so they must know exactly who
32:55they got to replace him.
32:56And then when it was clear that nah, they really did.
32:58It's like, oh, they're going back to the lottery.
33:04Nah, I was thinking, what are you doing to be traded?
33:08Jalen is going to be traded.
33:10Al Horford's going to be able to forget this.
33:12I should have stayed in Philly.
33:13What am I doing here?
33:15It's about to get ugly.
33:16I'm thinking like, this is about to get real, real ugly.
33:19And then, and then Brad had a rough season.
33:22Then he gets promoted to G what the hell is going on here?
33:28And I, again, I give Wick and Brad and those guys a lot of credit, man.
33:32I mean, obviously a lot of things had to break their way, but there's no way all these things
33:37could have broke their way.
33:38If you did not have some kind of vision on a, on a front end of how you thought this
33:41would play out.
33:42Um, but you can't have a, you can't, no, no, no.
33:45You cannot have a vision when you're blindsided.
33:49When you're blindsided, you don't have a vision.
33:51And so when something happens, you're going, what?
33:54I mean, when I heard the news, I immediately called Joe Sway.
33:59I said, Joe Sway, what the hell is going on?
34:02Do you know, emails got, got fired.
34:04You're going, huh?
34:05What are you talking about?
34:06I said, what do you know?
34:07He said, and I had all the reporters calling me going, Max, what's going on?
34:13I don't know.
34:14You're asking the wrong.
34:15I don't know.
34:16But Max, the thing I was, the vision for them, I think was that, you know what?
34:20If we only get one thing right in all this, we're going to get our culture back.
34:24We're going to get it so that it's not an issue because this is a major blow to our
34:27culture.
34:28And if we win some games, great.
34:29But if we don't, as long as we get the culture back on track and get this thing pre-EMA culture
34:35wise, we're going to be good.
34:37Now, did they anticipate they'd win this much with Joe?
34:40Hell no, hell no.
34:42No one, no one saw that coming.
34:44I think they were just hoping that he would do a solid job and they would stay, you know,
34:47relatively in the thick of things in the East and they'd be good.
34:51But to win a championship, get to the finals, you know, and, you know, do it in a way that's,
35:00I mean, let's be honest, Joe's all about shot, shot, shot, shot, shot.
35:05And the defense wasn't quite what it was before, but they were still winning games.
35:10And so, no, I mean, to me, the vision was that let's just get this culture back to where
35:15it was before.
35:16And if we win some games, great.
35:17And if we don't, then we don't.
35:19But again, they didn't just win some games.
35:22They won a hell of a lot of games.
35:25And you can't, there's no way you can anticipate that they would have had this kind of success
35:29on the court.
35:31The culture wise, I figured, you know, Joe Mizzou was a safe pick.
35:34Knowing his background, knowing what he values, you know, the cloth that he's cut from as
35:40a person, as a coach, he is going to make sure that the foolishness that you had with
35:45EMA, that wasn't going to happen.
35:46You didn't have to worry about that no more.
35:49Can he win us some games?
35:50Because that's the fan coming out.
35:52Is the brother going to get us some wins?
35:54And I give him a lot of credit, man.
35:57He did it his way.
35:58I mean, you think being there helps though, right guys?
36:01Though, like being with that team, because if he was just a coach that just came in and
36:04was like, all right, guys, I'm going to, you know, I'm going to, I'm taking over now.
36:07Like I think him being on that bench, even though he's in the second row sort of help.
36:10No, because if you're the players, you're like, okay, he didn't sign up for this.
36:14If you're the second row, if you're the second row, exactly.
36:18So now you, now you are leader.
36:20He's on, he's on the second row and he comes in that, you know, the difference I always
36:25said between you and the head coach with the assistant coaches, what about, about a half
36:30a foot, six inches or whatever it is, but for them to go where, what he did with this
36:37team at this time.
36:39And yeah, he's a safe pick.
36:41You know, his wife sits behind the bench.
36:43I talked to him, his wife, they, you know, they break down tape together.
36:47Last thing I want to do if I was coaching is have my wife telling me about what happened
36:51in the play.
36:52I'd be like, you know, here, wait, let's get this max thing.
36:57Go cook me some bacon and eggs or something.
36:59Go ahead.
36:59You got to put the maximum.
37:01I don't want my wife doing that.
37:05But his wife, what you listen to her basketball IQ and what you know about the game.
37:12Oh my God, you can't have a better person beside you.
37:16But man, that, that, that was a stroke of brilliance.
37:21And I just didn't think that anybody could see that thing coming the way it happened
37:27because this is, and even with this and Isharod and Joe Swayze winning this year to me, I
37:38didn't even really celebrate as much.
37:40I was more relieved because they were front runners and people were out of them the whole
37:45time.
37:46People said, this is Buffalo.
37:47Every next team they play.
37:48Oh, this team is going to beat them.
37:50When Dallas got in the mix, all my Dallas has the best player right now.
37:54And Luca is going, and I said, this is going to be for one in the beginning.
37:58Luca is going to be the best way.
37:59Luca was far from the best player.
38:02It was Brown.
38:02It was Tatum.
38:03I mean, you can add different people in who play well.
38:06So I don't see Dallas making that move again, unless somebody's going to show me a picture
38:12of Luca right now.
38:13He's lost about 25 pounds and he done put on muscle.
38:17Now he can defend the basketball because he couldn't be that dude yet.
38:21Well, if you ain't trying to be that dude, you ain't winning it.
38:24I know because after what happened in the final, then that was a huge storyline.
38:28You know, when he filed out, yeah, he got exposed in a big way and they need him in
38:32that game three.
38:33Go ahead, Shannon Sharp.
38:34You got exposed.
38:37I appreciate you leading to our next thing.
38:42That was really neat.
38:43You like that, Z?
38:44That's right.
38:44I know what you did there.
38:47This dude hosts a podcast.
38:48I know what you did.
38:50He got exposed.

40:42Game Time.
40:43Because this guy, man, he couldn't stay in front of me right now and I'm going to be
40:4869 years old.
40:49I'm like, damn.
40:51This dude was like, this dude was a matador.
40:53It's like, this way, this way, this way, go ahead, go ahead.
40:57It's like, damn.
40:57He was a walking easy pass, walking easy pass.
41:00Well, shout out to ESPN, Stephen A. Smith, because, man, he's out there saying Shannon
41:06Sharp isn't tech savvy whatsoever.
41:08He's not astute at these type of things and going live or he's not prone to do things
41:13like that.
41:13So not only is his, for going live on Instagram, not only will he not be penalized by ESPN,
41:21but he's saying that no fine, no anything.
41:25After Shannon Sharp went live on Instagram where you couldn't see what was going on,
41:30but you can hear something going on in the background.
41:34Why would you find him?
41:36What was it?
41:36Unless you found a way that he tried to set this up and then he got caught.
41:43I mean, what was the awkward moment you sent to me, Josue, about a reporter?
41:48You said it was last week.
41:50You said something to me.
41:51It was about the reporter that got caught.
41:54He was on ESPN.
41:55You said he was kind of doing something.
41:57He wasn't on camera and didn't have any clothes on.
42:01Oh, you're talking about?
42:02No, it's his name.
42:03Your boy Tubin.
42:04Your boy Tubin made an appearance for the first time in years after that.
42:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
42:08That wasn't a Tubin moment.
42:11But that was the Zoom.
42:12That was the Zoom era.
42:13Not to excuse that.
42:14Are you talking about Tubin from CNN?
42:16Yeah, yeah.
42:17So he made a public appearance on, I think it was CNN actually, for the first time in
42:22years or whatever.
42:23And they made some light of it.
42:25I said it to Max as a joke because when that story first broke, man, you thought that was
42:29the funniest thing ever.
42:30But I was saying how everyone was trying to adapt to the new Zoom era, 2020, COVID, all
42:36that.
42:37And some people would just forget that they were on or whatever.
42:40But that's not the case here.
42:41This is something different, man.
42:42How does that happen?
42:43OK, I need to know.
42:44Someone needs to break down how that happens because you have to specifically try to go
42:49live to go live.
42:50This is something you just hit a button by mistake.
42:53I don't know, man.
42:54Here's the thing.
42:55Here's the thing I believe in.
42:57I don't think he was hacked either.
42:58No, I think it was a mistake because why would he need that publicity?
43:04He's already one of the most popular guys around.
43:07Right.
43:08There's nothing to gain.
43:09Yeah, nothing.
43:10Absolutely nothing to gain in that situation.
43:12If you're Shannon Sharp, you go, well, let me do this.
43:14Let me tell you what.
43:15Let me put something on so they can think that I'm screwing here and this is going to
43:19make me more popular.
43:20No, no, there's nothing he was.
43:22There was no game he could get out of that at all.
43:25So I'll give him a mistake all day long.
43:28And you know me.
43:29I don't know, man.
43:30Someone's trying to cancel it.
43:31Someone's trying to set up.
43:32I don't have it.
43:33I don't have it just where you know I am.
43:35But I am not savvy at all.
43:37So my phone could be recording right now.
43:39I would have no.
43:40How many times had my mom called me going, hey, you called me.
43:45And guess what?
43:46I listen to you.
43:48You were cursing like a sailor.
43:50Yo, parents will not.
43:52They will not hang up the phone.
43:54If you ever, but they will.
43:55They will listen as if like, like you just you just gave them a line to tap into your
44:00cell phone.
44:00They're like, oh, it's my lucky day.
44:02Like parents.
44:03Yo, I remember one time in college or even at the college.
44:06I looked at my phone.
44:07The timer was at like 12 minutes.
44:08And I was like, hello.
44:09Like, yo, pops is just sitting there listening or moms or whoever.
44:15I'm like, damn.
44:18But no, man.
44:19So it's trying to cancel on that.
44:21I'm going with that.
44:22So it's trying to cancel Shannon Sharp, man.
44:23So no, no, I think just is.
44:29I don't know what he did, but I don't think he did it intentionally.
44:33I think it was an accident.
44:35There's just no logic behind why he would do this intentionally.
44:38And when you when you ain't tech savvy and you hitting buttons and you don't realize
44:43you're hitting buttons and you put your phone away thinking you put it away when,
44:46in fact, you probably hit some buttons you weren't supposed to push.
44:49Yeah, I can see it happening.
44:50I said, Michelle, you ready?
44:53But you know what?
44:54Just what we've all said.
44:55We've all had situations where we have our phone and somebody has and you put it down
45:03and you're done with the call.
45:04You've hung up.
45:05But somehow you open up something else and you hear somebody going.
45:08Hello.
45:09Hello.
45:09Hello.
45:11That could be the same thing.
45:13Could be the same thing.
45:13So I saw the thing I want to know.
45:17Who, Michelle?
45:18Who the hell is Michelle?
45:23Girl.
45:26Because, you know, somebody knows both of them and be like, damn, Michelle,
45:33he put your business on front street, girl.
45:36You think that we ain't going to get a picture of Michelle?
45:40That's a problem we're having already.
45:43I'm disappointed.
45:44I'm disappointed in TMZ right about now.
45:46Yeah, I was fully, I was fully expecting.
45:48They're trying.
45:49They're trying.
45:50You know, they are.
45:50You know, they are.
45:52You feel expected to put something out, right?
45:54Yeah, I was expecting to see Michelle by now.
45:58And just how and how popular he's become.
46:01And it's really funny, though.
46:04God has a funny way of working things, though.
46:06You know, when and I'm not saying thing is wrong with Shannon Sharpe.
46:10I think he's been grateful what he's done.
46:13But when he had that whole thing and, you know, and Cat Williams, that just shot him
46:18to a whole nother level.
46:19There was a lot of it was a lot of trash going in that thing.
46:24You don't think God turned around and said, well, let me let me expose you a little bit.
46:28Let me do the same thing that you did to other people.
46:31Let me see how that works out.
46:32Well, ever since the Cat Williams interview, a lot of other interviews after that have
46:36been sort of along those lines in terms of, like, guys getting things off their chest
46:39or opening up about stuff or even calling out a certain individual.
46:43So, yeah, maybe.
46:44I mean, Shannon has just been the host, man.
46:47And if you ask me, he's done a tremendous job.
46:49He's not just out there trying to put out salacious information or anything like he's
46:53a genuine journalist.
46:55You know, he does his research.
46:57It's a really good it's a unique craft, you know, and he's got a lot of guys that
47:02I'm into comedians like Marlon Wayans had a terrific conversation with him.
47:07And, you know, of course, he was the one that went viral.
47:09But yeah, I mean, I'm a huge I don't know, Max, you know, I'm a huge fan of comedy.
47:12And he's got a lot of comedians on and I love it, man.
47:15He does a really good job.
47:16But I'm just glad he's still got a job.
47:17So I'm glad he's still with ESPN.
47:19So I think I think the thing he's really done to me is he's and I'll say this in the
47:25most easy way as I can.
47:27I think he's made the podcast part of that ghetto fabulous now.
47:34And what I mean by ghetto fabulous is that, you know, the what are the what are the cigars
47:39you're smoking?
47:40And he's drinking, you know, what kind of what kind of cognac he's got his own cognac
47:46and that.
47:46So he's going to like this.
47:48This is like a like the boy sitting around like that.
47:51Yes.
47:53Let's go with Joe's house, man.
47:54That's right.
47:55And that's what gets people to open up.
47:57Exactly.
47:57And he's made his podcast seems to be the same way.
48:01I mean, I think he but his guests are a little bit more.
48:05His guests are a lot more popular, but he brings them down to his level.
48:09And, you know, you can team up.
48:11Yo, man, damn cognac.
48:12This Jack, man, this this this shit is right, man, right.
48:16So it's like you put a black man with a with some cognac and a cigar in front of a live
48:23mic.
48:23What do you think?
48:24What they forget, they are they on camera, right?
48:28For real.
48:30All right.
48:30Well, that's going to do it for this episode of The Cedric Maxwell Podcast, man.
48:34It's Rob Blakely.
48:35Appreciate you coming on, man.
48:36Always fun to have you on.
48:37He said to Maxwell.
48:38I am Joe Sway.
48:39Pavone guys.
48:40Appreciate the support.
48:41You already know.
48:42Just wait before you finish this.
48:44This is the craziest part to me right now.
48:47Does this does this all season seem like it went like that?
48:51Oh, man, the fastest one I can remember.
48:54I mean, we didn't just get the championship last week, a week ago.
48:59But it's like we're back already.
49:02You're less.
49:03We're back.
49:04Yeah, it's crazy, man.
49:05Preseason is like, what, two weeks away, pretty much three weeks away.
49:09Yeah, we're almost there, guys.
49:11So don't be time that the NBA is going to be back.
49:13Man, a lot of teams, a lot of competition ahead of us.
49:17But I can't wait for it to all unfold for sure.
49:19But yeah, man, a couple of weeks left.
49:21So we still got plenty of episodes leading you into the NBA season.
49:25So stay tuned.
49:26And, of course, a lot more special guests.
49:28I'm Joseph Pavone.

49:34Keep your phones locked.
49:36Yes, yes.
49:39But that'd be a lesson for sure.
49:40That'd be the public service announcement of the day.
49:42Keep your phones locked.
