00:00And Sunday, September 15th marks two weeks since the social media platform X was banned in Brazil.
00:06From Brasilia, our correspondent Brian Meir has more on this topic.
00:12Today marks two weeks since the social media platform X was banned in Brazil.
00:17And over the weekend, the Supreme Court agreed to release some of the frozen assets from Starlink Corporation,
00:25which has the same owner, Elon Musk.
00:28After Musk shut down the offices in Brazil in protest against a request to de-platform seven far-right social media influencers
00:37who were under investigation for involvement in the January 8th, 2023 coup attempt,
00:43the Supreme Court ordered that the platform be barred on all national territory.
00:48Initially, Musk refused to comply with the order with the Starlink Company,
00:54which provides services for around 250,000 Brazilians.
00:57But after a couple of days, he relented and agreed to block the service on that provider as well.
01:04Meanwhile, X left the country with 18 million reais in debt,
01:09and it only had 7 million in its bank accounts, which were immediately frozen by the Supreme Court.
01:15So, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered that all of Starlink's assets were banned in the country,
01:21including airplanes, vehicles, and bank assets.
01:25And after reviewing what was there, they agreed to take 11 million of it and return it to the national treasury
01:33in compensation for the fines incurred by X.
01:36With that, yesterday, the Supreme Court issued an order releasing all of the frozen assets that remained in X's accounts in Brazil.
01:46Meanwhile, people don't really know how long the platform is going to remain banned in Brazil,
01:52but local elections are coming up in about two and a half weeks.
01:55If the ban remains until that point, it'll be interesting to see if there's any effect on the elections,
02:01where around 5,600 mayoral seats are up for grabs,
02:06with X being such an important platform for the international far-right.
02:10It's going to be interesting to see what happens.
02:12Meanwhile, it's been two weeks and there's still no X in the country of Brazil.
