Sheffield retro: Popular cafes and coffee houses of the 1960s and 70s
Transcript
00:00The 60s and 70s witnessed a counter-cultural revolution as a new generation threw off the shackles and challenged convention.
00:09But there were people who just wanted to sit down and have a good natter over a cup of tea or coffee and a bite to eat.
00:16These cafes around Sheffield provided a welcome retreat for some from the political upheaval of the era,
00:23while for others they were a place to embrace new ways of thinking and meet like-minded people.
00:29Either way, they were all popular in their day, though most have sadly been lost during the decades that followed.
00:36These retro photos show how different the city used to look, not just the cafes, but the shops and streets surrounding them.
00:45Many of the cafes pictured were in the city centre, but others were found out in the suburbs, including Wosley Bridge, Intake, Grimestorp and Tinsley.
00:56Our gallery includes an old cinema cafe, another within Sheffield's Lost Victoria Railway Station and a third at the city's Playhouse Theatre.
01:06Do you remember drinking or eating at any of these old Sheffield cafes?
01:26.
