The Texans host the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football in their first home game of the season. The Bears picked up a win in week one against the Tennessee Titans. Let's scout the opponent.
Transcript
00:00I like to picture that conversation.
00:02D'Amico going up to Nick, Seth on the plane,
00:03and like, hey, how we doing on the Bears?
00:06Are we ready?
00:07And Nick being like, hey man, we just got on the plane.
00:08Can we enjoy the Colts win
00:10till we at least touch ground back in Houston?
00:13Yeah.
00:13Jeez.
00:14Taskmaster.
00:15Yeah, exactly, Nick.
00:18That was Nick?
00:18You really, yeah, I feel like Nick
00:22is already thinking about like two years down the line
00:25and just, yeah, or he's probably watching film
00:28of some kid at Northern Illinois.
00:31Yeah, exactly.
00:32Yeah, yeah.
00:34That is, by the way, that is one thing
00:36that is always weird to me.
00:37The coaches and the scouts especially,
00:40but the coaches on Saturday
00:42are already looking ahead to the next week.
00:44It's weird.
00:45It always felt to me like, no, maintain laser focus,
00:48but they gotta start getting a feel for everything
00:52ahead of time for all of that stuff.
00:53So yeah, they're definitely probably talking
00:56about the Bears in some respect.
00:57They got the scouts on it and everything.
00:59So first look ahead to the Bears here.
01:01Bears 1-0.
01:02They won a game against the Titans that empirically,
01:05they probably didn't have much business winning.
01:07The Titans allowed a blocked punt for a touchdown.
01:10Will Levis threw just a horrendous pick six in that game
01:13to give the Bears the lead.
01:15Caleb Williams was 14 of 29 for 93 yards.
01:22No touchdowns, no interceptions,
01:24just dinking and dunking
01:25and completing less than 50% of his passes.
01:28It was a less impressive performance
01:30than David Carr's performance in the last time
01:33that a number one overall pick at quarterback
01:35won his first game in the NFL.
01:37Yes.
01:38David Carr, I don't even remember what his stat line was,
01:42but I think he did more good things.
01:43It was a more consistent quarterback in that game
01:46than Caleb Williams was.
01:47Caleb-
01:48There was not nearly the amount of fanfare
01:50over David Carr as a prospect as there was Caleb Williams.
01:53No, both number one overall picks,
01:55but you're right, Caleb Williams has had the G word
01:56attached to him, generational.
01:58Caleb Williams, one of only two modern era quarterbacks
02:02in their debut to throw more than 25 times
02:06for less than 100 yards passing.
02:08The other one, Desmond Ritter.
02:12Desmond Ritter, who riddled the Texans for 329 yards
02:16last year in Atlanta's win over the Texans,
02:18but Desmond Ritter in his debut
02:20threw the ball more than 25 times for less than 100 yards.
02:23So, David Carr in that first game ever was,
02:26which they won, it was the last time a rookie quarterback-
02:28They, we, you were on that team.
02:31Yeah, that was, we were, but yeah,
02:33so it was the last time a quarterback,
02:36a number one overall drafted quarterback
02:37won his season opener.
02:39He was, he was 10 for 22 for 145 yards,
02:45so he broke the 100 mark, two touchdowns, one interception.
02:48Okay.
02:48So, it was a better performance out of David Carr.
02:51Boy, David didn't, David didn't crack 60% completion
02:54until week six that year.
02:57Oh, like in an individual game?
02:58Yeah, he was, no, it was a different time.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Not that much of a different time,
03:03but he was in the 50s, well,
03:05the second week versus San Diego, he was 24% completion.
03:09Jeez, I take it you didn't win that game.
03:12Six for 25, oh no, God.
03:15Wow.
03:16It was hot that day, too.
03:18That made it worse.
03:19It was really hot in Southern California.
03:22I remember it was one of the,
03:23it was the first time I'd played in San Diego,
03:25and I'm looking up and I've never seen somebody
03:27like shirtless dudes at an NFL game.
03:31You see that in college a lot,
03:32but I was looking around, I was like,
03:33man, this is a fit crowd here.
03:35This is, it wasn't like Buffalo Bills shirtless guys.
03:38Yeah.
03:39It was, I'm looking around, like,
03:41this is a fun game to go to.
03:42A lot of good looking Southern Californian
03:44men and women out here.
03:45I'd be like, yeah.
03:46San Diego's nice.
03:47I'm having a miserable time,
03:48but I'm going to look at,
03:50I'm going to check out some of the women, yeah.
03:51Looks like fun.
03:53There's a funny, there's a video,
03:55a tweet floating around, a video,
03:57a Caleb Williams week one metaphor,
03:59and it's these guys.
04:01You got these guys that are picking up
04:03what looks like this heavy plate of glass
04:06or something like that,
04:07and you've got this one guy with them
04:09who's, like, sort of leaning in,
04:11like, acting like he's about to help,
04:13but then backing away and kind of gesturing
04:15as to which way they should go,
04:16and then, like, as they're getting it lifted up
04:18and putting onto the back of the truck
04:20this very heavy item that they're carrying,
04:22like, the guy who's standing next to him
04:24is, like, almost helping them,
04:25but then once they get it onto the truck,
04:27he's, like, high-fiving them like he was part of it.
04:29That was kind of Caleb Williams.
04:32Like, he threw for 93 yards in a 24-17 win.
04:35That is what I get made fun of
04:38when our station, our cluster,
04:41does the volunteer thing we do every year
04:43where we go rebuild somebody's house.
04:45Oh, yeah, yeah.
04:46Like, in a poor part of town or whatever,
04:48underprivileged part of town, like, every year for...
04:50I think it's rebuilding together.
04:52We, as a cluster, go and we, you know,
04:56completely, like, paint and revamp somebody's house.
05:00Usually it's an elderly person who can't do it themselves,
05:03and my tendency at those things,
05:05because I'm the least handy person alive,
05:07you know, including even things like a paintbrush,
05:10I tend to walk around and supervise
05:11and keep people's spirits up, you know?
05:13Yeah, you're not even...
05:14And it's not like you're supervising and paying attention.
05:16You look like a mobster that's there on one of those,
05:20one of those jobs where you're allowed to just show up
05:22and you get paid for it.
05:23A no-show, yeah, yeah.
05:23It's not a no-show.
05:24It's sort of a category. Oh, no work.
05:26It's a no work. A no work, yeah.
05:27Yeah, you have to show up, but you're not working.
05:29It's a no work. Yeah.
05:30You might as well just be sitting there
05:31reading the horse racing stuff, yeah.
05:36The Jersey Star Ledger
05:37with one of those little handheld fans,
05:40like, underneath my neck, keeping my neck cool, yeah.
05:43I remember one day I was out there on a ladder
05:44just drenched in sweat, painting,
05:47and I looked down and you drinking a nice icy cold,
05:50like the last cold Gatorade, yeah.
05:52Dude, I'll tell you what, this morning,
05:55now we're doing our part this morning for the charity event,
05:58the Charity Endeavor
05:59with Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.
06:02This is not good for my diet, though.
06:03Whataburger just brought up, like,
06:0510 bags of honey chicken biscuits and stuff like that.
06:10I gotta stay in the studio during the break, man.
06:12You know what?
06:13That's what the offense was that year,
06:15that expansion year where David Carr won that game,
06:17so, or Caleb Williams won that game
06:18without doing a whole lot of work.
06:20I felt like watching the offense that year,
06:22in the four victories that we had,
06:25they might as well have been sitting around like you
06:27and in a lawn chair just chatting.
06:30The four victories that we had that year,
06:33that was, it's not even the best defense I ever played on,
06:36and yet, statistically, it didn't look that good
06:38because there was just no help at all from the offense.
06:42So, we won a game where the opponent scored 10 points,
06:46won a game where the opponent scored 19 points,
06:49another one, 14 points, and 19 points.
06:52Yeah.
06:53It was.
06:54Wow.
06:55Oh, wait, no, sorry.
06:56Six points, six points.
06:56Okay, that was in the six.
06:57Not 19, six points.
06:58Six was that Pittsburgh game.
06:59The Pittsburgh one where we had three scores on defense.
07:03Yeah.
07:03Three interceptions, two of them pick sixes, yeah.
07:06Pick sixes, yeah, I think it was.
07:06Or no, a pick six and, yeah, yeah, turnovers.
07:08You had, like, 30 yards of offense that game.
07:10Yeah.
07:11And won by 18.
07:12It was 24 to six, right?
07:14It was the lowest, it was the lowest yardage
07:17by an offense in a victory in NFL history at that point.
07:20Yeah.
07:21Here's Tank Dell.
07:22Tank Dell is excited about playing.
07:24This is the first time since 2019
07:27that the Texans are gonna be playing
07:28either a Monday or a Sunday night football game
07:30at home this Sunday.
07:31Here's Tank Dell.
07:32Definitely, I'm ready, man.
07:34I'm built for things like this.
07:35I'm built for them type of games.
07:37I'm ready, that's all I can say.
07:38I'm ready.
07:39I'll be ready, I'll be there.
07:40I'm built for things like this.
07:42We love you, Tank. Built for it.
07:43Yeah, we're built.
07:44It's gonna be a good environment, man.
07:46This is as amped up as a Texans crowd has been.
07:49Even, I would say, before the good,
07:52any of the good Bill O'Brien seasons,
07:54there just wasn't the same level of fervor and enthusiasm.
07:57I mean, this is about, like, what it was
08:00in, at the beginning of 2012, I think,
08:02where people had been built up by the surprise,
08:07really good season in 2011,
08:09except that you've got the added element
08:10of the whole D'Amico and C.J. effect.
08:13It's really cool to be a part of, just to experience it.
08:17Yeah, what is, I mean, you just outlined it,
08:19that Caleb Williams was doing things in week one,
08:23that David Carr was doing in week one in 2002,
08:25most notably winning, but also very notably
08:28not putting up very good numbers.
08:31Gotta be more nervous about this Bears team offensively
08:34than your Texans team.
08:35I think so, yeah.
08:36The firepower, the firepower that they have,
08:41including Caleb Williams himself.
08:42Sure.
08:43Much like, a little bit like we had last week
08:45with Anthony Richardson.
08:46Anthony Richardson can crush, kill you with his legs, too,
08:49which makes it that much harder to play against,
08:52because you're just constantly,
08:54you got your eyes in the backfield
08:57while also trying to handle your coverage duties.
09:00It's not as much that with Caleb Williams,
09:02but he's very, very much capable
09:05of making some spectacular throws,
09:07and that even on plays where you are
09:09doing everything right defensively,
09:11Caleb Williams and then his weaponry at wide receiver is,
09:17whether Caleb Williams is good or bad this year,
09:20there's a potential for fireworks.
09:22Yes.
09:22So you've gotta really be dialed in against him,
09:24no matter where he is in his development as a quarterback.
09:26You know what I think of when I think of this,
09:29when I think of what you and I are talking about,
09:30like, okay, the potential for Caleb Williams
09:33to look completely different in week two
09:35than he did in week one,
09:37is, I actually think back to Deshaun Watson,
09:39and this is not me talking about Deshaun
09:41and the things he's being accused of today
09:43or making fun of Cleveland.
09:44We may do that between now and the end of the show.
09:47This is actually a positive thing about Deshaun,
09:48where he won his first start, his debut,
09:52but it was a game where he didn't do very much.
09:55He didn't do very much passing at all.
09:56He had one gigantic 47-yard run for a touchdown
09:59right before the half against the Bengals,
10:01and they won the game 13-9.
10:03They were playing the New England Patriots
10:04in New England the next week.
10:06My guess is the week leading up to that game in New England,
10:09they were probably like,
10:10yeah, this Deshaun guy can do some things.
10:11He won a game.
10:12He's a first-round pick.
10:14I'm not worried about him torching us for 350 yards.
10:17And then he went up to New England
10:19and damn near won that football game
10:20as a two-touchdown underdog.
10:23Playing in an offense that I'm guessing,
10:26I know that they're gonna try to get Caleb Williams
10:28to play under center and play a more pro-style offense.
10:30The fact of the matter is,
10:31Caleb Williams is probably at his best
10:33when he's improvising and doing things like that,
10:36freelancing a little bit, a little like Deshaun.
10:38For now, yeah.
10:39Yeah, he's not a guy that's gonna come in
10:40and be the architect of just a perfectly executed game plan
10:44or anything like that.
10:45I think that, and this isn't even a slight on him,
10:48but he's not nearly as advanced mentally as C.J. Stroud was.
10:54Very few quarterbacks are as rookies.
10:56I mean, that was just kind of, it was crazy.
10:59But C.J. also, look, he took a big leap
11:02from week one to week two last year.
11:04If there's a cautionary tale,
11:06it's that C.J. had a lot working against him,
11:09but he also, in that first game,
11:12played a little bit like a rookie at times
11:14where all of a sudden in the second week,
11:16he had ironed out a lot of those things
11:18and it was playing from a deficit and all that,
11:21yada, yada, yada.
11:23But he did take, he took a step forward.
11:25So with Caleb Williams likewise,
11:27I think maybe some of the simple stuff
11:29that Caleb Williams was messing up on,
11:30some of the dink and dunk stuff that he didn't do well,
11:33maybe that, whatever it is, jitters or anything,
11:36he claims he hasn't been nervous
11:37since his first start in college, whatever.
11:41Good for you.
11:42Let's see you do it in the NFL.
11:44I guess the biggest X factor for me might be Roma Dunze.
11:48Roma Dunze had one reception for 11 yards in week one.
11:51He may not play.
11:53He had an MRI on his knee yesterday.
11:56Oh, he had an MRI?
11:57Oh, okay, okay.
11:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:59I think I saw he's week to week.
12:01So he may, we may not see.
12:02I'm with you.
12:03If he were playing, he'd be a big concern.
12:05He's a good player.
12:06And even like Keenan Allen,
12:08boy, think of how close the Texans came
12:10to getting Keenan Allen.
12:11He's even a little banged.
12:12I think he played, but he's banged up right now.
12:15I think the reports of him being fat
12:16and training camp were a little bit overblown.
12:17Those were fun.
12:18Yeah, those were fun.
12:20They kind of brought me back
12:21to the old Tony Romo is bat storylines.
12:25Yes, yes.
12:26Keenan Allen, man.
12:28Here's Will Anderson Jr. yesterday
12:29on his first look at the Chicago Bears.
12:31No, since I've watched our tape already,
12:34I started watching a little bit of Chicago this morning
12:36and saw what they did
12:37and went back and watched some highlights,
12:38got on my iPad, man.
12:40But I also think it's very just important
12:42to look at the game that we just played
12:44just to see those mistakes
12:45so they won't roll over into this game
12:46and on the areas that we can get better
12:48to rolling into this game.
12:49And yeah, we're excited for the next challenge, man.
12:51But you know, the focus right now is just saying like,
12:53how can we get better?
12:54What mistakes did we make right here?
12:56And how can we get it better
12:57so we won't make those same mistakes
12:58that go on into the next game?
13:00One of the most annoying things as a player
13:02is being asked about the next,
13:04the upcoming opponent on a Monday,
13:06because you spend the whole day going over the film
13:08from the week before,
13:09or from the game the day before.
13:11And it's like, you don't usually have a very informed take,
13:15even that you're comfortable talking about,
13:17even like Will Anderson said,
13:18he's watched them a little bit.
13:20But it's like, man, I just got out of a four hour meeting.
13:24I may have gotten reamed for a few of them.
13:26I may have made my mistakes against, from week one.
13:29I don't know, man.
13:30I don't know.
13:32What do you want from me?
13:33Will feels like the safest one to ask,
13:35because I feel like he would have already studied ahead.
13:37Like to your point about Casario,
13:39Will feels like he's got notes
13:40on the first four opponents already,
13:42like in a notebook somewhere.
13:43Ah, I don't know.
13:45I hesitate to say anything because it doesn't,
13:47it sounds like it would be a slight against it.
13:48It's just not what, it's not what's expected.
13:50It's not, that's not the mode you're in on Monday.
13:53Right, you're just, you're trying to do it.
13:56The coach is preaching week by week,
13:57like worry about the opponent right now.
14:00That it's just, it's not a bar or a standard
14:03that anybody is being held to.
14:04Have you seen?
14:05Like, hey, what are you?
14:06Give me the game plan for,
14:07the coaches don't know what the game plan is yet
14:09versus Chicago. Special work ethic
14:11and relentless mindset, Seth.
14:14Would not include being prepped for the Bears yet.
14:17Special.
14:18Would not include being prepped for the Bears yet.
14:20Says you, says you.
