00:00But he said he thought I needed to go to an expert.
00:03However, I have had a lot of trouble
00:05trying to find an expert.
00:06I don't like when the wind blows.
00:11I don't like going out in public just to be seen.
00:16It's hard and I always keep my head down.
00:20I used to go to ball games and I used to be so outgoing.
00:25I don't want people looking at me anymore.
00:28And it's just changed who I am.
00:33With the growth on Angie's face growing in size,
00:35we sent her to Dr. Ryan Osborne and Dr. Jason
00:38Hamilton at the Osborne Head and Neck Institute here in LA,
00:41hoping to find some answers that she's desperately
00:44been waiting for.
00:46So why don't you tell me what brought you here today?
00:49After, I guess, about two years ago,
00:52I went into a deep depression.
00:55I can't wear my hair up.
00:56I sort of lost myself.
00:59And why can't you wear your hair up?
01:02I mean, it's just so big.
01:04Can I see?
01:09Our job, working together, is to get the tumor out,
01:13make sure your facial nerves are protected.
01:16Dr. Osborne is probably the best at it, OK?
01:20And then my job is to come in and make it
01:22look like no one was ever there.
01:25We don't want you to have to deal with this problem anymore.
01:28My husband, he said that.
01:29There's pictures of me with my hair back.
01:33And he said, I can't wait to have you back.
01:36It's OK.
01:37It's all right.
01:39This is a tough moment.
01:45When we talk, we don't even consider
01:46this really a cosmetic issue.
01:49It's not.
01:51You're trapped.
01:54That's how I feel.
01:57You're trying to cover this thing,
01:59but you're hiding yourself, too.
02:01I can't be normal.
02:03And I'm just tired.
02:05And I honestly prayed that if it's something,
02:09that it would just go ahead and take my life.
02:13We're looking at you as a whole person.
02:15We want to make you functionally whole, emotionally whole,
02:19and get your family back together
02:21so that your kids can have their mom again.
02:23I hope that's what I'm going to do.
02:24And your husband can have his wife.
02:25Yeah.
02:25We're going to review your records.
02:28Dr. Hamilton and I will talk.
02:31I'm not telling you that we're going to take this case on.
02:35But I am telling you that we're going to seriously think about.
02:43It's been just a few days since that visit.
02:45Join us now, Dr. Hamilton, Dr. Osborne, and Angie.
02:49And Dr. Osborne, you obviously did a thorough examination.
02:56In that examination, what did you find?
02:59Well, first, I found a very courageous woman.
03:03Absolutely.
03:09It's obvious to me, it's not a malignant tumor.
03:12But it's having malignant characteristics
03:16and it's robbing her of her ability
03:19to interact with her family, to interact with society.
03:23It's clearly a tumor of the parotid gland, which
03:26is a large gland located on the side of your face
03:29that produces saliva.
03:31We have one on both sides.
03:34The main issue with it is trying to remove a tumor like this,
03:39what's on the table, the risk is complete and total facial
03:44paralysis permanently.
03:47You would look as if you had a stroke,
03:49but you're never going to recover.
03:51Wow.
03:52Is it fair to say, you know?
03:54If I sleep on it, like if I turn to sleep, it'll hurt.
03:59It'll have shooting pains sometimes.
04:01Is this one of the larger that you've
04:03seen of this type of tumor?
04:05I wish I could say it was the largest we've seen,
04:08but it really isn't.
04:09We've dealt with much larger.
04:12We sort of have a reputation for being referred
04:15cases that are complicated, so we've
04:17seen cases like this and probably even more dramatic.
04:22And Angie, I know it's been such a long road.
04:25How do you feel that at least you now have met the experts
04:31and at least you know exactly what is going on?
04:35Does that help?
04:37It's like there's a weight that's
04:38been lifted off my shoulders.
04:42I still don't want to go out and not have my hair,
04:44like this is really bothering me.
04:48Yeah, but I'm so excited.
04:50Do you go to restaurants still, or do you just
04:52kind of hide it and go on about your business,
04:55or has this really changed the way you do things?
04:57It's changed the way I do things.
04:58My daughter turned nine on Wednesday, and she plays soccer.
05:02And I would used to go and sit on the bleachers.
05:05I sit in the car because I don't want to get out.
05:08If the wind blows, it's a bad day.
05:11Angie, I promise you there's no one here judging you.
05:15Not one person.
05:16Not one person's judging you.
05:18They're just glad that you have opened up.
05:22And I know you're uncomfortable.
05:24I know that.
05:25But just know that we're all in your camp.
05:28I have anxiety.
05:29It's causing me to have high anxiety and depression.
05:33But you can't be who you used to be.
05:35Well, you know what's important,
05:38is you're here today for a reason.
05:40And I know you reached out for a reason.
05:42I did.
05:43And so, you mentioned it, Dr. Osborne.
05:45This goes beyond just the tumor itself.
05:48So, you came to the right place.
05:55We're back with Angie, Dr. Hamilton, and Dr. Osborne.
05:59The two of you, what I love is you work together.
06:02You work together to take care of the problem,
06:03but also to give someone like Angie her life back.
06:06So, surgically, the two of you can put a plan together
06:14to optimize the situation here for Angie,
06:16so that not only can she recover from this physically,
06:19but emotionally as well.
06:20Absolutely.
06:22We both work in concert,
06:25but we both focus on two different aspects,
06:28which is how we get this result.
06:31My goal here is to remove this tumor with no paralysis,
06:37and I'm committed to that.
06:39But the reality is,
06:39when you're removing a tumor of that size,
06:42this is somewhere around 5% of her body weight.
06:45It's just as if you had a baby.
06:47There's gonna be excess tissue, excess skin.
06:50And even removing that,
06:51you trade one deformity for another deformity,
06:54which could leave her still trapped.
06:56And that's where Dr. Hamilton comes into play.
07:00That's the second aspect,
07:01because this is as much of an emotional issue
07:04as it is a surgical issue.
07:06And what we have to do is,
07:08on the inside of this tumor that we don't see
07:10is that everything is flattened and pancaked down, right?
07:14And then everything on the outside of the tumor
07:16that's normal is stretched out like a rubber band.
07:20And we have to balance those two things back together
07:23so that when we're done,
07:24she looks completely normal and feels emotionally whole
07:29and is willing to go out.
07:30If we just take the tumor out
07:31and she's still stuck at home
07:33because she's embarrassed about the way she looks,
07:35then I wouldn't feel like we accomplished anything.
07:38But Angie, I know that we have a few pictures, right,
07:41that you all have brought.
07:42Absolutely.
07:43I want you to look at these to give you some hope.
07:45These are our patients that we've worked on
07:48who've had similar cases to Angie.
07:50And they were in the same emotional place
07:56where they didn't want to interact with people anymore.
07:59And that's where we come in.
08:01We take on these difficult cases.
08:02You know, I said I was going to think the case over,
08:09talk it over with Dr. Hamilton.
08:11We did.
08:12And we know that finances were also an issue for you.
08:17We were happy to tell you
08:20that we also have a non-profit organization
08:23that's going to pick up all the costs.
08:44I want you to know what it was
08:45that made the decision very easy.
08:48When we had the consultation,
08:50I said if you go forward,
08:53This is the chips you're pushing on the table.
08:56You truly may not move your face.
09:00And I'm not trying to be dramatic, I'm serious.
09:03This is a high risk case.
09:05Are you prepared to move forward?
09:07And she just said, I'm ready.
09:09I'm ready.
09:10And I'm ready.
09:11Thank you for being brave enough to share your story.
09:16And certainly a special thanks to Dr. Ann and Dr. Osborne.
09:18Thank you both so very much.
09:20You're welcome.
09:21And this is why you never give up hope, folks.
09:23That's right.
