Scotsman Westminster correspondent Alexander Brown on the winter fuel vote
Transcript
00:00Hello, my name is Alexander Brown. I'm the Scotsman's Westminster Correspondent and I'm
00:04just out of the chamber into a very wet and rather windy Westminster, where MPs have voted
00:09against annulling Labour's plans to means test the winter fuel payment. MPs voted by
00:14348 to 228 on the Tory-led motion brought by Mel Stride, with the government winning
00:20with a majority of 120. However, with there being 403 Labour MPs, that means just 53 Labour
00:28MPs failed to vote against it, with only one, actually, John Trickett, voting against
00:33the controversial policy. Earlier in the day, Tory MPs opposed outside Parliament just here,
00:38with signs opposing the cut, which is pretty remarkable, given it was in their 2017 party
00:44manifesto and Kemi Badnok had previously written while she supports it. However, with just
00:49one Labour MP voting against it, and only a few of the left abstaining, it suggests
00:54remains absolute as we approach conference season. For more, stay tuned to thescotsman.com
