00:00My style is my life.
00:02I do get judged a lot for my fashion.
00:05I have been called possessed.
00:07A lot of people talk about white face.
00:10I am not trying to look white.
00:12I am a clown.
00:14Today, I'm going to change from this whimsical goth look
00:18into an Instagram baddie.
00:20Oh, God.
00:22I'm going to be revealing it to my two very good friends,
00:26and I'm excited to see what their reactions are going to be.
00:30Whoa.
00:32My God.
00:37Hi.
00:39Janet?
00:40Yes.
00:41Nice to meet you.
00:42Thank you so much.
00:43My name is Janet.
00:44I would describe my style as whimsical and goth and clown makeup.
00:50I made most of this outfit.
00:53I'm pretty sure you can see it's very DIY.
00:55I tore an old sweater and sewed it into the skirt.
00:59What attracts me to the creepy cute aesthetic
01:03is specifically that I like to make a statement with a lot of my fashion,
01:08and I do feel like fashion is supposed to be like a form of expression.
01:12Fashion should be like a fingerprint for everybody.
01:17I have been in goth spaces for a really long time,
01:21and I definitely didn't feel like that was the entirety of my identity
01:25as I went into different alternative scenes
01:27in goth clubs and raves and emo clubs.
01:30I kind of took a little bit of each scene with me
01:34and amalgamated it into my style.
01:38I love a lot of cute things,
01:41but at the same time, I feel like I'm a very dark person.
01:44I like to watch those very dark documentaries,
01:47and I like to watch some horror movies as well.
01:50I wanted to find a way to express that through my style.
01:54I'm going to be doing more of like an Instagram baddie kind of look.
01:59I'm really going to be focusing on a very contoured face,
02:03a lot of highlight to bring the cheekbones out,
02:06fuller lips, some big fluffy brows.
02:09I think she's going to look so good. I'm really excited for this.
02:12Okay, Janet, we're ready to go.
02:21Oh, God.
02:26Devastating.
02:28I'm scared.
02:30You're scared? What made you decide to do this?
02:33I wanted to see what I would look like
02:37in a world where I chose to conform
02:41and fit more into the beauty standard, you know?
02:45Okay.
02:46I went to a Catholic girls' boarding school,
02:49and a lot of the things I grew up with
02:52and a lot of the people I grew up around
02:54definitely wanted you to fit into a box.
02:56It feels like I'm unbecoming myself.
02:59Fit into a certain style, be a certain way, have a certain career.
03:03And so for me, I was already very weird,
03:06and that was already pointed out when I was really young.
03:09I stood out.
03:11A lot of people just wanted me to fit in more,
03:13mostly because they were concerned,
03:15but I realized this is who I am as a person, obviously,
03:18I can't change that.
03:21These are some of my favorite clothes.
03:23This was thrifted.
03:25I would usually wear it with this see-through mesh top
03:30that I've torn into shreds.
03:32This is one of my favorite belts.
03:34I love anything that's pastel, anything that has soft colors.
03:38Platform boots.
03:40Cat ears.
03:42Of course, I also have some harnesses.
03:44I just love to have that alternative, more dark style
03:49with really cute colors like pink.
03:52I do get judged a lot for my fashion.
03:55I receive a lot of positive and negative attention online.
04:00I have been called possessed.
04:02A lot of people do like to talk about something called whiteface.
04:07They like to go around any alternative black people
04:11and describe the face paint that black people put on as whiteface
04:16and try to basically claim that they are being in some way oppressed
04:21by us wearing clown makeup or goth makeup.
04:24I am not trying to look white, I am the clown.
04:29My style is my life.
04:32I do feel like a lot of girls such as myself
04:38who are black and grew up in maybe more conformative spaces
04:43weren't really allowed to express themselves in very dynamic, crazy ways.
04:50I think it should be a norm for young black girls to also want to be alternative
04:54because I don't see it that often.
04:57Okay, makeup is done.
04:59Time to put on the outfit.
05:03Okay, are you ready to see yourself?
05:05I'm scared.
05:09One, two, three.
05:18Oh, this is interesting.
05:32This is just horrendous on so many levels.
05:37It's diabolically horrendous.
05:43Silver and green is a choice.
05:46I hate it very much.
05:50I look like I run a marketing firm and I'm 45.
05:56I think I actually do like the dress a little bit.
05:59I just don't like green and specifically this shade of green.
06:04The makeup itself I feel is a lot better than the rest of the outfit,
06:10but I just don't feel like it's me either.
06:13I literally don't recognize this person.
06:16I feel like Jin and Emma will find this hilarious.
06:25Whoa.
06:28Wow.
06:30I am speechless.
06:35I didn't think I would be shocked, but I am.
06:40Wow.
06:42It looks weird.
06:43It's weird because I do like it, but it's so not you.
06:48I do like this color on you a lot though.
06:51I think it looks very nice.
06:56It looks great, but it's also jarring.
07:01I actually think you could wear those shoes.
07:05I feel like you'd find a way to incorporate them into your style.
07:09Yeah, the silver is really cool.
07:11It's just very interesting to see you in like, I guess it's more normie form.
07:19Or just like glam, girly.
07:22It's super girly.
07:24I feel like I work in a corporate office.
07:26No, no one's wearing that in a corporate office.
07:29It's kind of Bratz doll, but less edgy.
07:33What Bratz doll is wearing this?
07:35I'm sure one of them does.
07:37It looks like an outfit someone would wear to a place that I wouldn't go.
07:40Exactly, exactly.
07:42I think I definitely prefer the original look.
07:44I think that's where a lot of the artistic talent shines through.
07:48What you usually wear is so unique.
07:50So while, again, this looks great, it's definitely not as interesting as what you usually wear.
07:55And I definitely prefer that.
07:57I'm surprised that Emma actually liked this style.
08:01I genuinely thought they would both find this funny in the sense that it's so different.
08:07Jin's reaction, I did expect, though.
08:10I think this experience has definitely taught me to appreciate how much time and dedication
08:17I've put into my creepy, cute, whimsical clown fashion.
08:27You
