00:00Let's get started here with the National Football League.
00:03What happened before the game may have been a bigger story
00:08than what happened during any of the games yesterday.
00:10I have to say it was great to have football back.
00:13It was not great to watch a player in the NFL
00:17on the ground in handcuffs before the game.
00:20Folks, did you see this happen yesterday?
00:22It was all over social media.
00:24Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins
00:26was trying to get into the stadium,
00:29may or may not have been doing some reckless driving.
00:31He's been cited for that, not arrested, cited for that.
00:35He was detained by the police in Miami-Dade
00:38for a short period of time.
00:39His teammates tried to come to the rescue.
00:43But needless to say, this happened actually
00:45before the Dolphins took on the Jaguars, folks.
00:47Yesterday, Tyreek Hill, by the way,
00:48caught a touchdown in this game.
00:50But there you can see the clips there
00:53of Tyreek Hill on the ground.
00:55And again, we're not gonna get into the legalese of this.
00:57This is Agent Gerosenhaus is basically saying
00:59we're gonna open up an investigation into this.
01:01And the Miami Police Department of Miami-Dade
01:04released a statement yesterday.
01:06The officer who was involved in this
01:07is gonna have to take a leave of absence.
01:09They're saying that they're aware
01:10of the recent detainment of Tyreek Hill.
01:13I have requested a immediate review
01:16of all details surrounding the incident.
01:17We're also gonna review available body camera footage.
01:20That'll tell the story.
01:21We will provide updates
01:22as further information becomes available.
01:27That's the statement from Miami-Dade.
01:30After the game yesterday, in a game Miami won, by the way,
01:33you have to come back down 14-0,
01:34Tyreek Hill talked about exactly what happened afterward,
01:39but said he's gonna leave a lot of this to everyone else,
01:43including his attorneys and people involved in his camp.
01:49Right now?
01:51You know, so I've been trying to figure that out, too.
01:54I've been trying to figure that out, too, man.
01:55Right now, I'm still trying to put it all together,
01:59so I'm not gonna give you a version
02:02that I still don't know what happened.
02:04You know what I'm saying?
02:06But I do wanna say,
02:07I do wanna be able to use this platform
02:08to say, like, what if I was a Tyreek Hill, bro?
02:11Like, worst case scenario, you know?
02:13Because it's crazy.
02:15Like, I wanna be a cop one day.
02:16I gotta stay true to my head, all that, you know?
02:18So I got a lot of respect for cops, man,
02:19but obviously, you know, everybody has bad apples
02:25in every situation, you know?
02:26So I wanna be able to, you know, use this platform,
02:31you know, to figure out a way to, like, flip this
02:36and, you know, make it a positive on both ends,
02:38on my end, and then also Miami-Dade, you know?
02:40So that way, we can team together
02:41and, you know, do something positive for the community,
02:43because that's what it's all about, bro.
02:45Like, you guys are here to, like,
02:48protect us as individuals, and, you know,
02:51I have a platform, and I wanna be able
02:53to team up with you guys, so that's all I gotta say.
02:56Yeah, didn't expect much more,
02:58and you can expect more to come.
03:00Meanwhile, the preparation for the Miami Dolphins
03:02went into the game yesterday very bizarrely,
03:04when their head coach, Mike McDaniel,
03:06talked about finding out that his star-wide receiver
03:09was in handcuffs before the game.
03:12I was preparing to call a game
03:15in my normal pre-game routine,
03:18and I had some teammates come talk to me
03:24about what was going on with loose information.
03:26It was very gray at the time,
03:29and then, you know, there was probably 20 minutes
03:33between that and their arrival,
03:36from when I heard about it, maybe 30, I don't know,
03:42and realistically, I wouldn't,
03:47I think it'd be improper.
03:49I don't really know all of the details of it,
03:53outside of the upsetting portions
03:56of worrying about teammates and their well-being,
04:02and then I was really, really just happy
04:06with the way that our team came together
04:10when teammates were in need.
04:12To say that this overshadowed the game
04:14would be an understatement.
04:15It is the big talking point today
04:18in the National Football League,
04:18and if you predicted before the year 2024
04:21that Scotty Scheffler and Tyreek Hill
04:24would both be detained before a golf event
04:26and an NFL event, you win the predictions for 2024.
04:31Did you predict the Lions would cover an overtime yesterday?
04:34That's a bad beat, of course, for the Rams yesterday.
04:36Great game, by the way, on Sunday Night Football.
04:3826 to 20, the Lions end up picking up
04:41win number one of the season,
04:43and, you know, certainly a great game back and forth.
04:46The Rams fought hard, too.
04:47That was the focus for Dan Campbell in this game.
04:49Of course, the Lions, in this quarterback bowl,
04:52the golf Stafford Bowl, to say the least,
04:55ended up going in Detroit's way, so they win,
04:57and after the game, Campbell said
04:58he was proud of the way the team played,
05:00but gave a lot of credit to the Rams.
05:02Man, I thought they had a heck of a plan.
05:04They adjusted to some things that we threw at them well,
05:08and they just kept coming, man.
05:09They fought and they fought,
05:11and it was, you know, man, it was,
05:16it was a lot of, I respect it, I do.
05:18I respect it, and that quarterback, man, Stafford,
05:20I thought played lights out, man,
05:22and played tough, and hit after hit,
05:25just kept getting up and making unbelievable throws,
05:28so I just give them a lot of credit.
05:31They did, they fought now, but we're hard to break,
05:36so we did what we had to do,
05:39and, you know, our defense held there.
05:43Before that, Fox makes a heck of a punt,
05:45and defense holds offense.
05:47We get it back, and, you know, get it into overtime.
05:49We win the toss, and we don't look back,
05:51so we eventually found our rhythm.
05:53We did what we had to do, and I said it early in the week.
05:56The team that makes the most mistakes
05:57is the one who usually loses these early games,
06:00and we made one less mistake,
06:03and so now we just gotta improve from there.
06:07Detroit picks up the win on Sunday night football.
06:10We got Monday night football coming ahead,
06:11but first, big news out of the National Football League.
06:14Defensive lineman Derek Brown of the Carolina Panthers
06:17could potentially miss a long period of time.
06:19It's being reported that he has a injury
06:22that's being determined right now.
06:23We'll see what happens for them in the future.
06:25This is one of the best players on the Panthers
06:27who got shellacked by the Saints yesterday.
06:30More on that in a minute.
06:31Monday night football coming up,
06:32and, of course, we're gonna talk a ton
06:34about this game with Vinny Iyer,
06:36but did you know passing touchdowns going into week one
06:39at a basically very low level,
06:4133 passing touchdowns thus far
06:43for the first week of the NFL season,
06:45just 33 pending Monday night football?
06:47If you played in a survivor pool yesterday
06:50and you did not take the Cincinnati Bengals
06:53over the New England Patriots,
06:54send me a message at craigmissions
06:56and show me proof of this,
06:58because I don't believe you.
06:59Yesterday, the New England Patriots
07:00upset the Bengals' biggest underdog of the week.
07:03Meanwhile, what in the world happened
07:06to the Titans late in that game?
07:07Up 17 to nothing, Will Levis,
07:09like just throwing backyard footballs
07:11and bears and punt returns, interceptions.
07:14They come back to win in Caleb Williams' first start,
07:16although it wasn't great.
07:17The Giants lost 28 to six.
07:18Panthers got shellacked, as I said, 47 to 10 in that one,
07:22and also a new contract for Dak Prescott.
07:25If you missed it yesterday,
07:26he's gonna be the all-time paid quarterback
07:29in the history of the NFL,
07:30$60 million a year for Dak Prescott.
07:32He's gonna end his career in Dallas.
07:34Meanwhile, the new AP pulls out in college football.
07:36As of right now, Nebraska is in.
07:39They crushed Colorado on Saturday night,
07:40a game that wasn't close from start to finish.
07:42Iowa State now is ranked 21st if they beat Iowa.
07:45Northern Illinois takes down Notre Dame.
07:47Where's my friend Bill Bender?
07:49For me to tell him I told you so on that one.
07:5016-14 the final there.
07:52Longhorns beat the Wolverines Saturday.
07:54Texas looks awesome, 31 to 12.
07:57Tennessee beats North Carolina State.
08:00It was not close, 51 to 10 on Saturday.
08:03In Major League Baseball, in case you missed it last night,
08:05Haven Smith of the Arizona Diamondbacks
08:08hit three home runs yesterday against the Astros.
08:1112-6 the final, Justin Verlander had a tough time.
08:14Shohei Otani trying to get to 50-50,
08:16hit home run number 46 yesterday.
08:19And over in the National League Wildcard race,
08:21the Mets finally lost the game.
08:23They lost to Cincinnati.
08:24And our prayers are out to Hall of Famer Wade Boggs,
08:26who was diagnosed with cancer.
08:30Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:31Pat Evans is with us here on this Monday
08:33from LegalSportsReport.com.
08:36All of the topics we discuss can be accessed
08:38over on their website.
08:39And you can also follow Pat on social media as well.
08:43Pat, fun weekend for the NFL and for college football.
08:47Congrats to your Spartans.
08:49A very unexpected win on the road.
08:52So, you know, we love to keep you engaged with football
08:55most of the season usually,
08:56or at least last couple of years we lose you in October.
08:59But I don't know, congrats though.
09:01Maybe your team's headed toward November this year.
09:03I mean, it's possible, but I doubt it.
09:05You know, it's a strong start for the Jonathan Smith era.
09:07And I'm just really excited about the QB
09:09and wide receiver situation they've got
09:11with really young guys.
09:12And it'll be a fun season, a lot more fun than last year.
09:16And that's what I'm excited about.
09:16Plus the Lions, they showed out last night
09:19with a great overtime win.
09:20It's good here in Michigan for me,
09:22not for the Wolverines though.
09:24All right, well, I had to throw that little dig there
09:26at the Wolverines there at the end.
09:27You knew that was coming.
09:28All right, so hold on a second.
09:30Drum roll here, Pat.
09:31Is it possible?
09:32Is it possible we may have a new state
09:37legalizing sports betting in 2024?
09:40We're on the precipice of it.
09:41Still some ways to go here.
09:44But we found out late last week, Friday, Saturday,
09:46over the weekend, which state is it, Pat,
09:49that's gonna have this on the ballot?
09:50Because this is telling me at least 50-50 shot here,
09:53this happens.
09:54Yeah, so Missouri, we've been talking about this a lot
09:58the last three years as we've seen the legislative sessions
10:01kind of peter out because of a senator
10:03who didn't wanna let it through.
10:05But we've followed a petition campaign all year
10:11to get sports betting on the ballot.
10:12It was led by the St. Louis Cardinals
10:14and other professional sports teams in Missouri.
10:17They turned in way more signatures
10:19than they needed back in May,
10:21and it took until August 13 to get certified on the ballot.
10:24Well, that was until August 21st
10:25when we saw a lawsuit pop up
10:28to challenge the certification process.
10:32And that hearing ended up being last week
10:34because the Missouri ballot is finalized tomorrow.
10:37So this was a very kind of quick lawsuit
10:40we had to settle out, and the hearing was interesting.
10:43It was like seven hours long.
10:44I tuned in the whole thing.
10:45A lot of cross-examinations of the science of signatures
10:51and the certification process.
10:53It was a lot of interesting things
10:55I've never thought about in terms of signatures
10:57because that's what the plaintiff said
10:59was just a lot of these signatures are not valid.
11:02They should not count, so it should not be on the ballot.
11:06Well, the judge, he sided with the defendants,
11:09the Secretary of State, John Ashcroft,
11:11and said, you know what?
11:13This is the certification process.
11:14This is what you followed.
11:16We're gonna trust it.
11:18It's on the ballot.
11:19We'll see if there's any sort of,
11:23I'm losing on a word that I'm trying to think of,
11:26but an appeal, that's what I'm thinking of,
11:29which would be an interesting thing
11:31now that the ballot finalizes tomorrow.
11:34So it's gonna be on the ballot in November.
11:36What happens then if it's appealed
11:38and something else happens?
11:39A lot of things, I'm not a lawyer.
11:41I don't know kind of the process after that.
11:43But again, we've got a recent poll
11:45that says 50% of Missourians want sports betting.
11:5050% of the voters, another 21% are undecided.
11:53And the professor who was kind of attached
11:55to that poll at St. Louis University said,
11:58this ballot question has a very good chance of passing.
12:03So, you know, we're gonna see in less than two months
12:06if voters in Missouri want sports betting.
12:08And from there, we'll go in and see what happens.
12:11What's interesting though, is we still don't know
12:13who really put up this lawsuit.
12:15It was a very interesting mix of Democratic consultants
12:18and a very big Missouri Republican lawyer
12:22on the witness stand, the lead plaintiff, Jacqueline Wood,
12:25said her ballot question pop up,
12:27which, you know, who knows what that does.
12:30But it's gonna be a fun two months to see
12:32if it does finally cross the road
12:34and across the finish line in Missouri.
12:36Yeah, closest state we've had, let's just be honest,
12:39basically this year with anything is Missouri.
12:41So this'll be our story in the study group this spring.
12:44We figured out some things that Ohio wants,
12:46some worries that are kind of bubbling there
12:48and how might it be difficult to get across the line.
12:52But, you know, they're fairly happy
12:54with how their sports betting industry is rolling.
12:57So this is just kind of another step.
12:59It's the next step.
13:00And of course we've seen how difficult it can be
13:03to get online casino off the ground.
13:05I mean, only eight states in DC have it,
13:07not in sports betting, online casino.
13:09So it is going to be an uphill battle
13:12no matter what state it is.
13:13But these states that are starting to talk about it,
13:15I mean, Ohio is next to Pennsylvania and Michigan,
13:18both of which have online casino already.
13:20So that might be a kind of a push to get there.
13:24One thing of note is the sponsor is termed out.
13:27He is leaving the legislator.
13:30And so somebody else will have to pick it up
13:32after this executive session,
13:34but he's just trying to get the ball rolling,
13:36the ball started in the actual legislator
13:38and see what kind of things need to be ironed out,
13:40where they're going from here.
13:43So again, it's gonna be an interesting session next year
13:46as we kind of turn our attention from online sports betting
13:49because as we just talked about,
13:51states are kind of drying up in terms of states
13:54that might legalize sports betting.
13:56But there's plenty out there who are at least
13:58gonna start talking about online casino
14:00because there's budget shortfalls, states need money,
14:05but it is a little bit of a hardier endeavor
14:08to pass online casino than sports betting.
14:10It's a little bit more controversial, I'd say,
14:13for a lot of constituents.
14:15All right, let's wrap it up here a little bit.
14:17You'll have to educate me a little more on this one, Pat,
14:19and I think our viewers as well.
14:20Explain to me about this sweepstakes
14:22that they're trying to get legalized.
14:24Exactly what is this?
14:25I read the story over in the sports report
14:27and I'm still not 100% sure.
14:29Is this a different kind of wagering
14:32or what do they define as sweepstakes?
14:35So these sweepstakes companies,
14:37they just started a kind of coalition,
14:39the 11 of these companies to advocate for themselves.
14:43We're starting to see some pushback against them.
14:45They're these gray market operators.
14:47They found loopholes in regulations
14:50that allow them to kind of operate as online casinos,
14:53but it's not real money.
14:55They figured out a way to give out free money
14:58that then can be exchanged for real money
15:01and you can put in, it's kind of a double edged
15:04kind of way to get around things.
15:06And so, there's the, not surprisingly,
15:10the regulated industry saying, wait, hold on a second,
15:14this is a little weird.
15:14Why aren't they regulated and have to follow
15:15the same things we have to follow
15:18and why do they not have to pay taxes?
15:21And this association's popping up
15:23and I think they're gonna start advocating for themselves,
15:25perhaps going to regulators and saying,
15:27hey, can we maybe figure out something
15:29so we're not really in the bad guy situation here.
15:33This comes as both, well, the AGA,
15:35the American Gaming Association,
15:36has issued a statement asking regulators
15:39to scrutinize these operators a little bit more
15:42because, again, it's unregulated gaming
15:44that's kind of getting through the cracks.
15:47And then Michigan sent a cease and desist
15:50to multiple operators all offshore
15:54and they pulled out of Michigan.
15:56But up note, all the 11 operators
15:59seem to be above board so far
16:02and trying to really figure out
16:04how to make this an okay industry in the US.
16:07Got it, all right, well, Pat, great stuff as always.
16:09We'll keep an eye on Missouri over the next couple of weeks,
16:12see if anything changes and looking forward
16:13to catch up with you again later in the week.
16:14Thanks for coming on Newswire.
16:16Thanks as always, Craig.
