South Korea is currently battling with a rise in cases of harmful, deepfake pornography. While law enforcement and politicians have vowed to crackdown on the illegal behaviour, many victims say attitudes among men need to change.

00:00The scourge of deepfake pornography is now so bad here in South Korea that the President
00:09is demanding more action to stop the illegal activity.
00:12There's been a series of reports in recent weeks about secret chat rooms with hundreds
00:17if not thousands of members.
00:19Inside, users can create and disseminate fabricated sexual images of real women and girls.
00:26Most perpetrators are teenagers, students, targeting other fellow students.
00:32This problem is being viewed almost as a national disaster in Korea.
00:37Journalist Won Yoon-ji was responsible for cracking open the first major case of the
00:41year.
00:42She spent years trying to reveal a man who was tormenting women with deepfake pornography.
00:48A suspect was eventually arrested after she delivered women's underwear to a public toilet
00:53and arranged for police to collect evidence and eventually swoop.
00:59After nearly two years of conversation, it was the only moment I saw hope.
01:03I thought, this crime will end now.
01:06The victims can finally rest easy.
01:09His attempts to really humiliate me and try to get me to respond, that really, really
01:18just felt like a physical assault.
01:21Using deepfake material can attract a jail sentence of up to five years.
01:25Politicians are now calling for even tougher sentences, including lowering the age of criminal
01:31responsibility.
01:32But getting a conviction is tough, and many of the perpetrators are only given light sentences,
01:38even probation.
01:41What victims want is a change in attitude among men.
01:45So I'm less worried about the technologies than with the persistent misogyny and rape
01:52culture.
01:54Police in South Korea have launched an investigation into the encrypted messaging service Telegram.
01:58It comes after its founder was arrested in France over allegations the service abets
02:04sex crimes.
