Children under 14 could soon be banned from accessing social media under proposed new laws in South Australia. The state government today released a report outlining a legislative plan for the ban, which may set a precedent for other states to follow.

00:10It would also require social media companies to get parental consent for 14 and 15 year
00:15olds wanting to use their platforms.
00:18The Premier says the system would be overseen by a regulator and there could be fines of
00:22more than $1 million issued to companies who break the law.
00:26He says more serious breaches would go to the Supreme Court and families of children
00:30who suffer mental or physical harm will be able to sue for damages.

00:38It's about a symbol, it's about a signal to the community and parents out there at the
00:44moment who have young teenagers who are addicted to social media, who they are worried about
00:50the harm it is causing, have nothing in their toolkit to try and persuade a child to give
00:56it up.
00:57It's the first proposed social media ban of its kind in Australia but the Premier says
01:02the framework is something other states may be able to implement as well.
