Lange müsst ihr nicht mehr warten auf Titan Quest 2. Noch im Winter 2024 soll die Fortsetzung, beziehungsweise das Revival des gefeierten Hack-and-Slay Klassikers in den Early Access starten. Entwickelt wird das isometrische Action-Rollenspiel vom in München ansässigen Studio Grimlore Games.

Auf ihrem Youtube-Kanal teilten die Entwickler kürzlich 40 Minuten Gameplay aus ihrem kommenden Titel; das gezeigte Material stammt aus der gamescom Demo. Im Video führen euch Lead Systems Designer Balint Marczin und der Technical Art Director von Grimlore Games, Florian Jonas, durch ihr Spiel und erklären die grundlegenden Mechaniken von Titan Quest 2.

Auf der gamescom war das Grimlore-Team zudem bei unserem RPG-Experten Maurice zu Gast und haben mit ihm in unserem GameStar-Talk über die handgebaute Open Word von Titan Quest 2 gesprochen.

00:00Welcome everyone to a playthrough of the Titan Quest 2 Gamescom Demo.
00:11We're the developers at Grimlore, my name is Balin Martin, I'm the lead systems designer.
00:16And I'm Florian Jonas, some of you may know me as the white t-shirt guy, but I'm actually the technical art director here at Grimlore Games.
00:24Two roles in one, excellent.
00:26So this is basically a live playthrough I'm actually playing right now, where we've got a lot to share.
00:33About the world of Titan Quest 2, which is obviously set in Greek mythology.
00:38We're keeping this whole theme of it being this bright and vibrant place.
00:44Somewhere where you'd want to take a holiday, but maybe you wouldn't want to take a holiday with all the monsters around.
00:51Yeah, that's definitely right.
00:53The Gamescom Demo actually starts a bit after the intro chapter, which also will be part of early access.
00:59Where we will learn that Nemesis is after us.
01:03And now we as a player who barely escaped her, have now to find out why is the goddess Nemesis after us.
01:10And who better to ask than the Moirai, the three fates of Greek mythology.
01:16That's right, to get access to them we will have to find a god.
01:19But first it would help to find some kind of village, people that can guide us.
01:23So that's what we're doing right now.
01:25Here on the beach there's a bunch of crabs.
01:27They're kind of back from Titan Quest 1, but in some different ways.
01:30As well as the Ictians, here's the first one.
01:36What generally can be said about Titan Quest is that we have this handcrafted world.
01:40So we don't use any procedural level generation, at least for now.
01:46This allows us to really take advantage of all these little areas that we can design.
01:53To create memorable situations for the player.
01:58Like here, this ladder might be missed by a few people.
02:02But it actually leads to a little area where the player can face more Ictians.
02:08And maybe also discovers something else.
02:12Yeah, this is also pretty early in the game.
02:14So the encounters, we've deliberately made them quite easy.
02:18But we're still putting some rewards here.
02:20As well as some nice view with the waterfall over there.
02:26And as far as exploration goes, more rewards.
02:30More exploration.
02:32But it's optional, you don't have to come here to the Altar of Benevolence.
02:36You can just skip this.
02:39Yeah, we're trying to break up these combat pauses.
02:43Like you saw before, when Balint was running back from the first Ictians.
02:47To have these little scenic events, like the waterfall.
02:52That's right. So we've got a bunch of choice dialogues here.
02:55That we're currently covering up with the camera.
02:57But that's fine.
02:58I've requested a staff here.
03:01And that brings us to our items.
03:04Which, we've got a lot of items.
03:06And they're really cool.
03:08Not just in terms of visuals, but also in terms of what they do.
03:12So we've brought back, obviously, all the things about rarities.
03:16That you can imagine.
03:18They basically come with a different number of affixes.
03:22But we also put the items into these families.
03:25Which are essentially these visual groupings of the items.
03:29And then those will also bring a specific effect with them.
03:34The innate effect, the white effect, essentially.
03:38Here on the overview.
03:40Flo, do you want to tell us a little bit about how the visual groupings have been created?
03:45Yeah, absolutely.
03:47As in other games, obviously, we have a lot of weapon classes.
03:52But all these weapon classes, like one-hand sword, shield, bow.
03:57All of these we have divided in three families each.
04:00As Balint was mentioning already.
04:02And each of these families kind of represent or kind of support a playstyle a bit more.
04:08I mean, after all, they stay the same.
04:11So our two-handed axe, for example, will always be the slow, heavy-hitting weapon.
04:15Compared to a sword, let's say.
04:17But there are nuances that can be shifted with these families.
04:20So, for example, to stay with the example of the two-handed axes.
04:24We have heavy, medium and light axes.
04:27And the light axe might be maybe focused more on a crit build.
04:32While the heavy axe is more support.
04:35This really builds that just want to bring the damage to the enemies.
04:42And visually, we kind of differentiate between generated items and uniques or monster-frequenced or faction items.
04:52Especially in the early game or in combat situations.
04:57Most of the time, if you're not facing unique creatures, you will mostly find these generated items.
05:03And for these families, we have multiple modular pieces that kind of get randomized together.
05:09So we want to create this random look.
05:12Where the player can find different looking weapons as often as possible.
05:19Because we definitely know that loot is a big part of an ARPG, obviously.
05:25So each weapon will consist of at least two parts.
05:30But many of more parts, actually, as well.
05:34And this is not only reflected in the 3D mesh.
05:37You can see the item on the ground.
05:40You can see it in the icon.
05:42And you can see it on your character.
05:45Because I think, personally, this is really something that stands out for us.
05:51And I think it's really rewarding just to see everything on your character displayed.
05:56And also in the inventory.
06:00Here it is. Like on the ground, it looks exactly the same as it does in the inventory.
06:04As it does on the icon.
06:06And we've just seen some more complex fights here that really brought down my health.
06:11I didn't do a very good job of dodging.
06:13But, you know, you don't need to dodge if you can kite.
06:17So there's many, many different varieties of playstyles that we want to allow.
06:22Yes, the dodge is a very central skill.
06:24But do you have to always use it?
06:26No, not really, no.
06:28Speaking of skills, we're about to level up.
06:31And when we do, we'll be talking about the masteries in a moment.
06:35But first, it seems these Ictian Guardians have been dropping some special items.
06:41And we'll be picking those up.
06:44There's a separate stash here for quest items.
06:47So I wonder what that could be for.
06:51You can maybe shed some light on what these coins actually do.
06:56The viewers who actually watched out may have seen a bug, actually.
07:01Because the stash that we mentioned actually doesn't look in-game as it does on the icon.
07:05So props for you who found out.
07:07This is actually a bug.
07:09Sorry that it happened.
07:11But we're on to the items.
07:12This is a very first iteration.
07:14And we have a fix already in an internal build.
07:17Yeah, just wanted to be sure we're on the same page here.
07:21That's right, this build is actually old now.
07:23So there is that.
07:25We still wanted to show you, for those of you who couldn't attend in person.
07:30That's, I think, totally fine.
07:32It is far for some of you, after all.
07:35But we have leveled up.
07:37And it's time to talk a little bit about those masteries.
07:41So we still have the whole thing of combining two masteries to form your own class.
07:46We don't just give you a class.
07:48So it's classic Titan Quest stuff.
07:50We have active skills as well as passive skills.
07:52Of course, what you see here, in terms of the size of the skill tree.
07:56It's drastically cut down for the Gamescom demo specifically.
07:59So that players with their limited time sessions over there.
08:03Could just get into it and figure out what's going on within the skills.
08:08So these are the modifiers that you can slot in.
08:12Which will cost some capacity slots.
08:15Which then you unlock with your active points.
08:17So if I want to modify my leap slam now to do more stuff.
08:21Such as also do a stun.
08:24Then I can assign this.
08:26But that will take two of these slots.
08:30However, if I take it out, I gain those back.
08:33And I can do this anytime.
08:35I could assign the rage gain, which is also a really nice modifier.
08:39And we need to somehow make use of that rage, right?
08:43It's just a status effect.
08:45We've got this onslaught on the primary weapon attack.
08:48And I have some more points available over there.
08:51So why don't we just get that.
08:54Put it on.
08:56And then it can work in tandem with our frost explosion.
08:59Which essentially converts some of our damage to cold.
09:02And then causes some explosions when enemies get frozen.
09:08Which we can very easily do with our frost nova as well.
09:11Ice nova, sorry.
09:13And the onslaught as we gain rage from every attack.
09:18As well as our leap slam.
09:20Which will be increasing our attack speed.
09:24So we're going to be attacking pretty quickly.
09:26We also have overwhelm, which is also a status effect.
09:30Gained by the primary attack.
09:32Up to three stacks can be had.
09:34And then you consume it essentially with your stomp.
09:37The stomp already stuns, so it's pretty useful.
09:40But overwhelm makes it do more damage and in a larger radius.
09:44So let me quickly show you.
09:46We're going to build up the three stacks of overwhelm here.
09:49Consume it with a giant stomp.
09:51But once this cooldown is over.
09:54We'll be able to see how much smaller the regular one is.
10:00There you go.
10:01Giant size difference.
10:03And we also have some passive points.
10:04Which we'll be wanting to spend here.
10:06Now the passives don't quite have modifiers.
10:08They have what we call feats.
10:10And the way we have it set up now.
10:13Is that at level three you get one slot.
10:16And then at level six another slot.
10:18Which is invested here.
10:19So that we can get the ailment chance to synergize here.
10:23With our application of chill.
10:25From our regular weapon attack.
10:29We'll put that in and that will be great overall.
10:32And then in storm we can diverge a little bit.
10:36And get a little bit of energy.
10:38Because when I spam my ice shards.
10:40I run out of energy.
10:41Not great.
10:42I think one thing that we could answer.
10:46That I have been seeing floating around the community.
10:48Is the question if masteries actually have an effect.
10:52On the modifiers.
10:54Do masteries bring additional modifiers at all.
10:57One way or the other.
10:59We don't do cross mastery modifiers really.
11:04But we do these cross mastery effects.
11:06So for example rage could be consumed.
11:10By something in storm in the future.
11:12Or overwhelm.
11:14There's definitely examples for that.
11:16So you do have these natural synergies.
11:19That are going to go across.
11:23And you have modifiers injecting themselves.
11:27Into the global abilities at the moment.
11:29Such as the dodge.
11:31Such as the regular weapon attack.
11:35Right so I think the frost explosion for example.
11:38Is a good example for that.
11:39That actually like the frost explosion.
11:41Is a skill that takes advantage of the frozen state.
11:44Especially of enemies.
11:46And this actually comes from the storm mastery right.
11:50Yes.
11:52Perfect.
11:55Yes it just happens to naturally also synergize.
11:57With what's in warfare right.
11:59So you get a lot of double benefits.
12:02You get a lot of stick stacking.
12:04Definitely worth making use of that.
12:06And now that I've reached my high stack count on rage.
12:09You can see how quick the attack speed has become.
12:12So it definitely is transformative in that sense.
12:18And why am I allowed to make use of warfare skills.
12:22But with the staff.
12:24I'm kind of setting myself up to be a mage here aren't I.
12:27Well that is possible because of our attribute system.
12:30So our attributes are basically this.
12:33Three directional triangle that you're looking at.
12:36But it becomes six directional once you start combining these.
12:40We've got vigor in the middle as well.
12:43Which impacts your health.
12:45But might what that does.
12:47It basically unlocks your support for heavy armor.
12:50As well as heavy weapons.
12:52That you would expect from a warrior.
12:54Knowledge is more the mage stuff.
12:56Like robes as well as staves.
12:58Agility is more like the deck stuff.
13:01That you'd be used to from other RPG games.
13:03So daggers and stuff like that.
13:05But then we have things like fitness.
13:07Fitness looks at a combination.
13:10We have a formula for this.
13:12Might, vigor and agility basically get combined into fitness.
13:15Depending on how you spread this out.
13:18Might and agility contribute more than vigor.
13:21But what this does.
13:23Is strike damage and pierce damage gets increased by fitness.
13:26And then resolve the combination of might, vigor and knowledge.
13:30That will give you fire and cold damage.
13:33And we have a lot of that right now.
13:36As well as fitness.
13:38But because we are an ice warrior.
13:40We kind of want to.
13:42A storm warrior.
13:44We kind of want to go into resolve here.
13:46To play into cold damage.
13:48That's what we have a lot of right now.
13:50We could go more into might.
13:52And support our heavy armor now.
13:55And still be a mage.
13:57In terms of damage.
13:59But have the option to swap to pure physical.
14:02Flexibility, choice, choice, choice.
14:05That's the motto here.
14:10So if at some point we find a cool melee weapon for example.
14:14We could switch out that staff.
14:16Yeah, just for a melee weapon.
14:18And that would just work.
14:20Just like the staff in the build, right?
14:24We will at some point definitely swap for something.
14:27We do want to show off the stuff after all.
14:29The teleporters.
14:31They will come in very useful momentarily.
14:35Unfortunately we have some issues with the ranged mechanics still.
14:39As you saw some projectiles were missing.
14:42So what I'll do is at the first opportunity.
14:45We will be swapping to something with melee.
14:49Maybe we get to show dual wield as the enemies drop stuff.
14:52But yeah, it's not always bright and pretty in Greece over here.
14:56We've got the caves.
14:58It's going to be kind of chock full of spiders.
15:00As well as skellies.
15:03Stuff like that you can totally expect.
15:05We don't shy away from the ARPG staples.
15:08But we're definitely in a brighter spot.
15:12Than most of the competition would be.
15:17Maybe I can quickly say something about the ragdoll.
15:19Because I saw that also in the comments.
15:21I think people were complaining a bit.
15:23Rightfully so.
15:26There was a bit lack of ragdoll physics.
15:29Although it was already enabled.
15:31We didn't make it in time for the trailer.
15:33We definitely amped it up for the games conversion though.
15:36And we also invested a bit more into that system.
15:40So the ragdoll impact is a pure visual thing.
15:44But the deathblow which triggers the ragdoll.
15:48Is now actually a bit adjustable.
15:52So each skill and also each weapon will have a different impact.
15:56On how far the enemies will actually be flung.
15:59So if you kill someone with a two-hand axe.
16:02Or a heavy warfare skill.
16:04You will definitely send the spiders flying.
16:08Although just a deathblow with a dagger for example.
16:12Will not have the same impact.
16:14That's right.
16:16So we've got these exploding spiders.
16:18Which you would have to basically avoid.
16:20They get a lot more interesting when they're combined with others.
16:23Obviously one on one.
16:25Not a huge threat.
16:27But we do want to go for this more complex fighting situation.
16:30Like here if I let myself get caught by that web.
16:33I get slowed down.
16:35And I happen to take some of the explosion damage from the spider.
16:38But not the damage over time area.
16:40If I take both.
16:42My health would have been down to like half or so.
16:45If there's multiple of those exploding spiders.
16:48I'd probably be dead.
16:49Now this is also a tougher encounter however here.
16:52With the revenant.
16:54It's able to cast these long line AOEs.
16:57And it also empowers the nearby skeletons.
17:01So you'd get frozen by this.
17:03I tried to chug my potion in the last second.
17:05Wasn't enough.
17:06And I'm toast.
17:08But guess what happens then.
17:11We go back all the way here.
17:13But we don't want to be masochist.
17:16Or turn you into that.
17:19We do offer you this recovery portal to go back.
17:22You don't have to kill everything on the way.
17:24In fact everything you did kill.
17:26Is still toast.
17:28So we'll be able to just head back to the recovery portal.
17:33And the fight is back.
17:35We have to solve this combat puzzle.
17:38That we've set up for you.
17:42Shouldn't be a big deal if you pay attention.
17:44If you dodge these big abilities.
17:47And if you focus down the enemies.
17:49Especially if you have kiting.
17:51This is a pretty easy encounter still.
17:53But we did want to show you what happens.
17:57So we definitely want to take you also as a player series.
18:00And create challenges.
18:02That you just can't breeze through from time to time at least.
18:06I mean we definitely are a true RPG I want to say.
18:09But we also want to have you fun right from the get go.
18:13And not only after the first playthrough.
18:17Still we want to respect your time.
18:19And definitely don't want to make it tedious.
18:22Which is why we went for that portal solution.
18:27Yes and if you die you do lose a little bit of experience.
18:30So there is a penalty.
18:32We'll look into perhaps giving you an option to get that back.
18:36Like it was in Titan Quest 1 with the gravestones.
18:43So that is something we're looking into still.
18:46Probably sometime during the early access we'll have our answer regarding that.
18:50Anyway I leveled up again.
18:52What do we do next Flo?
18:54I finished this first.
18:58Maybe we can show the frost shards.
19:00Yes that's probably a good idea.
19:03We can respec at least a little bit.
19:06Let's get the maximum energy or the regen.
19:10I think the regen.
19:12The regen is good.
19:14Yes that's probably going to allow us to be smooth there.
19:17So the current thing that's applied to ice shards.
19:20Current modifier is the torrent.
19:22Which gives us additional projectiles.
19:24That's pretty much a no brainer.
19:26You probably want to go with this first.
19:28But there's other options.
19:30There's this one that allows you to penetrate further enemies.
19:35However to get to level 6 would require 4 points and we have 3 right now.
19:39So I think we're going to start here with long shot.
19:42Which just requires 1.
19:44And we'll just spend these points and wait for the 6th one.
19:47And then we'll swap them out later.
19:49At the next level up.
19:51So you can already see that the capacity costs may differ on the complexity of the modifier.
19:57So it's not always a given that you can slot every modifier that you want.
20:01There will definitely be super expensive ones.
20:05Which really will make you have to think about what modifiers you actually slot in.
20:14Yeah they're a little bit better if I shoot from a longer range.
20:18They're going to be stronger now.
20:20So that's I think very visible here.
20:22There should have been a more complex encounter.
20:24But we're just a little bit too strong for this.
20:26So again the early parts of the game are a little bit easier.
20:30As this area that we're showing off.
20:32But we'll shortly ramp up the difficulty a little bit.
20:35And to go back to the semi open world approach.
20:38We do want to reward exploration.
20:40So this lady over there.
20:42Not very happy to see us.
20:44Because we should be over there.
20:47But she's pointing us out to this chest down there.
20:51There should be some useful loot.
20:53I'll make use of that.
20:54Now because of the ranged issues I'll be swapping back to spear and shield for the moment.
20:58And hopefully we get some decent drops.
21:00This is not scripted.
21:02So not everything will go well for me.
21:05Maybe it's actually a good point.
21:07That we talk about the enemy classes.
21:10We have this faction system.
21:12And you have seen plenty of the Ictins by now.
21:15But here we also start to introduce more classes.
21:18To make the combat encounters a bit more complex and more interesting.
21:22So what you have to think of factions.
21:24Is like a toolbox for our game designers to play with.
21:28To create these encounters.
21:30So we have guards that tank damage.
21:32And try to keep you away from the casters.
21:34Then the casters themselves.
21:36That either deal high damage.
21:38Or assist.
21:40Also we have the crowd enemies.
21:42Like the troopers here.
21:44And the brute that you can see here in the middle.
21:46With a big club.
21:48Where you definitely want to stay away from.
21:50As you can see he really can dish out damage.
21:52And if you...
21:54Again by himself he might not be the biggest threat.
21:56But imagine you were stunned by one of the guards.
21:58Who have a shield.
22:00And are surrounded maybe by a few others.
22:02Then this really becomes an issue.
22:06That's absolutely right.
22:08And you know we've seen earlier the man catcher.
22:10The guy with the giant halberd.
22:12As well as his net that he can throw.
22:14So he can net you.
22:16And then the brute comes in.
22:18He slams on the ground.
22:20It's also a very powerful ability.
22:22That you have to be wary of.
22:24And you know we just really want to demand.
22:26A little bit of attention.
22:28A little bit of creativity.
22:30To solve these combat encounters.
22:32But again early on we are still simple.
22:34Later on we will start mixing.
22:36These more advanced creatures together.
22:38And actually we'll get to show that.
22:40Later in the demo as well here.
22:42So I've got a...
22:44Is this a dagger?
22:46That means we can have two.
22:48But I need to click on the shield to remove that.
22:50We have inventory sorting of course by the way.
22:52And we have a ton of stats.
22:54For you to enjoy.
22:56This is just a basic overview.
22:58But we'll have a lot of advanced stats.
23:00And I mean a lot.
23:02Now you can see a lot of these are still under construction.
23:04But these are.
23:06At the base level.
23:08All the stats that we'll provide for you.
23:10And we'll try to make sure.
23:12That they're very clear.
23:14We're still working on the tool tips for them.
23:16But we'll make sure that.
23:18It's easy to understand.
23:20Now I go double daggers.
23:22So the reason it's interesting.
23:24Is because they have a lot of single target damage.
23:26So if I come across some tough enemies.
23:28I'll be able to just shank them.
23:30And they'll very quickly disappear.
23:32But these basic weapons.
23:34These smaller weapons.
23:36They don't have a big area of effect.
23:38All the weapons have an area of effect in Titan Quest 2.
23:40But their shape and size differs.
23:42So it's a tiny cone with these.
23:46But you get this crazy attack speed.
23:48Once your rage goes up.
23:50With our current setup.
23:56And if we're lucky.
23:58We maybe find later.
24:02The raging bull.
24:04Who makes a reappearance.
24:06I read it somewhere in the community.
24:08That they were afraid.
24:10That we have this pre-placed loot everywhere.
24:12That's definitely not the case.
24:14It's just as some were already.
24:16Mentioning a setup for the demo build.
24:18So we can actually.
24:20Reward the players of the demo.
24:24Yeah it's definitely not the case.
24:26In the real game.
24:28So the demo.
24:30Yes we did want to show that one item.
24:32But otherwise everything is randomized.
24:34So you still have to farm.
24:36Long term.
24:38And we'll provide you great options to do so.
24:40Now crafting isn't going to be present immediately.
24:42In the beginning of the early access.
24:44But we do plan to add it.
24:46And we'll make the monsters drop their.
24:48Monster specific loot.
24:50Rather than the human loot.
24:52That you're currently going to see from them.
24:54Especially animals like crabs or whatever.
25:00Oh just because I saw you picking up gold.
25:02I saw that also.
25:04Been something that people.
25:06Yeah were robbed the wrong way.
25:08By this is also something.
25:10That we actually already.
25:12Yeah have in the local build.
25:14Here the auto pick up of gold.
25:16So we are also thinking of.
25:18Quality of life features.
25:20Although it's early access.
25:26Don't stop these little side areas.
25:28That you can explore.
25:30And farm for XP.
25:32Like coming here to just go after the spiders.
25:34Once we add crafting.
25:36This is going to be a lot more meaningful.
25:38Than it is in now.
25:40You know roaming around here.
25:42There's a lot of spiders.
25:44So if we do something.
25:46Crafting related with spiders.
25:48This is a decent place to go.
25:50And there will be.
25:52Teleporters nearby as well.
25:54There it is.
25:56Just walk past it.
25:58Oh I guess one more area.
26:00That we can very briefly show.
26:02Is this little farm spot.
26:04With the boars and the birds.
26:06Should be familiar from Titan Quest 1.
26:08I suppose a little bit of challenge.
26:10Might be surprising you every now and then.
26:12And of course there's a big boy.
26:14Definitely.
26:16I'll let him do his ability.
26:18Oh god.
26:20That was a mistake.
26:22There it is.
26:24Big stomp.
26:26You definitely want to walk out of that.
26:28Yeah I was told that actually.
26:30Boars played a very big role.
26:32In Greek mythology.
26:34And yeah I mean.
26:36I can definitely see how they pose a threat.
26:38If I see a.
26:403 meter boar.
26:44Try to use both my masteries.
26:46Running and hiding.
26:48Of course we've got.
26:50Side quests as well.
26:52That's a nice load of items.
26:54We even have a.
26:56Scythe here somewhere.
26:58So we have two handed items of course.
27:00For warrior types.
27:02But scythes are actually light.
27:04Two handed items.
27:06So a mage type could technically wear this.
27:08If it was the right type.
27:10Now this is not really.
27:12Lending itself to a mage.
27:14But if it had let's say.
27:16A fire version of that.
27:18Or a cold version of that.
27:20That could totally happen.
27:22We'd also be making sure to cover it.
27:24On the items such as with this one.
27:26Where you know the fire.
27:28Staff is on fire.
27:30We have that for the physical weapons as well.
27:32I think one thing.
27:34I quickly want to note here is.
27:36We also have like these damage conversions.
27:38Obviously.
27:40And we also reflect that on the projectiles.
27:42And the weapons.
27:44So it's not only.
27:46Like if you have like this.
27:48One skill that kind of converts your damage.
27:50Into frost damage.
27:52Then you will also be shooting frost projectiles.
27:54And not only fire projectiles.
27:56That deal frost damage technically.
27:58So we really want to show.
28:00The gameplay systems.
28:02On the player facing side.
28:04Yes those kinds of weapons.
28:06Are not particularly going to be common by the way.
28:08So we know like a sword on fire.
