The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to assist police in investigating a school bus driver who posts content that features children and those who made inappropriate comments on his post, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

After attending the International Legal Conference on Online Harms 2024 on Friday (Sept 6), Fahmi also noted that authorities are analysing the followers of the bus driver who posted comments akin to purveyors of crimes involving minors.

He also cautioned teachers against uploading content involving schoolchildren, as such actions are illegal under the Child Act 2001.

00:00Can you update us on the case of the bus driver and what has been done?
00:30I have contacted Tik Tok to do data preservation and ensure that all the information needed by the PDRM can be obtained in a fresh state.
00:42I have also contacted Tik Tok this morning and they provided good cooperation to the PDRM.
00:51So that's the information we have so far.
00:55The issue that I mentioned in the speech earlier,
01:02when we look at the content that has been included in the account,
01:08it is a bit worrying how Tik Tok can allow an account like this to operate for so long.
01:17I am also worried when I look at the comments in the content,
01:23which also imagine the issue of what is called as the purveyor of certain criminal activities,
01:32allowing other crimes to be committed.
01:39I think platforms such as this conference enable us to investigate the best way to understand the situation.
01:50I put it this way,
01:52the content that has been produced allows for comments that if we investigate,
01:59are a bit worrying and worrying.
02:03The trend is that they follow and watch content like this.
02:08And we don't know how many other accounts that are similar to this account are in Tik Tok.
02:15So that's where I see it,
02:18social media platforms need to provide more cooperation to the authorities.
02:26And I believe that the people,
02:30together with us,
02:32in ensuring that children under the age of 16,
02:36or under the age of 13,
02:39do not have social media accounts.
02:43I would also like to convey a message to those who produce content,
02:50including teachers,
02:52that you should not show, record and broadcast the faces of children.
02:59That is a violation of the law, including the rights of children.
03:06And I, God willing, will contact the Minister of Education
03:14to ensure that this issue is understood by teachers as well.
03:22You said there were disturbing comments,
03:25which might have led to copycats and stuff.
03:29So, is MCMC looking,
03:32analysing further the 600k followers or anything,
03:37just to make sure that no further crimes are committed based on the drivers' Tik Toks?
03:43MCMC will cooperate with D11, Bukit Aman.
03:48If the PDRM, which is the body that conducts the investigation,
03:56pleads for MCMC to make sure that other parties,
04:01who might be believed to be involved,
04:05or suspected of violating the law in our country,
04:13MCMC is ready to help.
