00:00The Presidential Communications Office, or PCO, has a new chief and is officially sworn to office at the palace.
00:07Let's find out who the new PCO head is in this report by Kenneth Paciente.
00:14President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has appointed former Senior Undersecretary and Presidential Assistant for Strategic Communications Cesar Chavez
00:22as the new Secretary of the Presidential Communications Office, or PCO.
00:26He replaces former PCO Secretary Shelloy Garafil.
00:29The oath of office of the newly appointed Secretary was administered by the President himself.
00:34Chavez expressed his gratitude for the trust granted to him by the President on his new responsibility.
00:39He assured to perform his duty well.
01:00The Secretary will focus on strengthening the government's information dissemination
01:05to ensure, he said, that the President's message, as well as all government initiatives, reach the people.
01:10However, the Secretary emphasized the President will remain the government's primary spokesperson.
01:29Under the domain of the Department of Foreign Affairs, but sometimes a statement from the President may be necessary, I'll be helping.
01:36I'll be asking some people who are experts on national security, who are experts on social development,
01:40who are experts on infrastructure, on PPP to help me join my team.
01:45I cannot reveal their names at the moment, but they will do well.
01:49He also assured that his leadership in the PCO will prioritize fighting disinformation and fake news.
01:55In fact, one of the steps the PCO will take is to assign fact-checking officers in state media,
02:00including PTV4, to ensure that the spread of disinformation and fake news is avoided.
02:05If we see something that we think is fake, there is a process of checking
02:11on how we can see if the news is fake or not.
02:15We will immediately mark it, so that it is clear, so that it is not too obvious.
02:21Timely, accurate, and validated information is what we need here inside the PCO.
02:26The Secretary also shared that as early as August 2022, he was approached and offered a position which he initially declined.
02:33He also pointed out that shuffling positions in government is not new, as it is part of institutional change.
02:39The President is confident over the appointment of Chavez, given his credentials and experience in public service.
02:45And his marching order to him is just to tell the people the truth.
02:49Chavez is the third Communication Secretary of President Marcos Jr. since he took office.
02:54First was Trixie Angeles, who resigned in October 2022.
02:57He immediately followed by Garafil as OIC before being formally appointed Secretary in January 2023.
03:03Garafil will be appointed head of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office or MECO in Taiwan.
