00:00Miles, I mean, as you know, I've seen the show, I've been a big fan of yours for a long time.
00:04You've got your third album out now as Danzig, and it seems to be doing real good.
00:09Anything you want to tell us about the new album?
00:11No.
00:12Nothing you want to tell us? Well, I got some questions.
00:14First of all, there's a lot of, like, rumours that I have heard, stupid things.
00:19I mean, what are some of the real ridiculous misconceptions people have about yourself?
00:24Um, jeez, there's so many of them. I don't know where to start.
00:32For example, someone said we couldn't go out of the country recently because I was under indictment for murder.
00:37Okay, that's one of them, of course, you know.
00:40You're not under indictment, though.
00:41No, I'm not. If I killed somebody, you wouldn't know about it.
00:44It'd be gone in history. No evidence.
00:47Okay, let's talk a little bit about the music.
00:49Obviously, you're very influenced by the blues.
00:53And you hear a lot of people say that, like, oh yeah, we got a little bit of R&B, but I mean, you can sing the blues.
00:59When I was growing up, the bands that I played in played a lot of the blues and Black Sabbath.
01:07So that's it, you know.
01:09Now, did you do something with Roy Orbison?
01:12Right before he died, I wrote this song for him, which is on the Less Than Zero soundtrack.
01:18It's called Life Fades Away, which is kind of weird because it's about dying.
01:22Because a lot of people don't know that.
01:24I mean, everybody's like so thinking about this dancing mystique.
01:27I mean, you're an excellent songwriter and Roy Orbison recorded one of your songs.
01:31Yeah.
01:32So that's got to be a big honor.
01:33I wrote it specifically for him.
01:34Really?
01:35Yeah.
01:36Is there anybody else that you've ever written for?
01:39No, not really.
01:41Some people cover my songs all the time, but there's no one I've ever specifically written for.
01:47Roy Orbison was just somebody I really liked.
01:49Yeah.
01:51I like his songwriting.
01:52I like his singing.
01:54So it worked out really well and I got to work with one of the legends, which was great.
01:58Definitely.

02:08You probably should know, you were also in The Misfits, one of the original punk bands, and Sam Hayne.

02:19It seems like almost the Misfits now are more popular than they were.
02:23I mean, does it seem like there's a big cult, fans, everybody's buying up all the old Misfits records?
02:28I don't know, and I don't give t-shirts.
02:30You don't see all the money coming in from the old Misfits stuff?
02:33No.
02:34Did they reissue it, or you don't really care about the old stuff?
02:36Most of those shirts are bootlegs.
02:40That was a pass.
02:41Okay, we'll talk about the Danzig stuff then.
02:44Like I said, this is the third Danzig album.
02:46The album is called How the Gods Kill.
02:48And on all the songs, on all three albums actually, you sing with a real lot of emotions.
02:53I mean, where do you get most of your ideas from, your songwriting?
02:56Anger, frustration, all that kind of stuff.
02:59I pretty much hate everybody and everything.
03:02Oh yeah.
03:03Because some of the songs, I mean, like the ballad Sistisna, Sistina, I know I'm pronouncing it wrong.
03:08Sistinas.
03:09Sistinas is like, I hate to use this word, but it's a very touching ballad.
03:12I mean, it's got a real lot of emotion.
03:15It's about depression, isolation, loneliness.
03:18I wanted it to be just this very, very totally just isolation.
03:26Where were you coming from when you wrote that song?
03:28I just told you.
03:29Personal experiences.
03:30And other people.
03:32I like to take personal emotions and mix them with things I see around from other people.
03:40And that's what I like to do.
03:42I'm not a literary license.
03:43How about the song Dirty Black Summer, which we're about to play the video?
03:46That basically is just about my summers growing up.
03:52And I guess kids, their summers, they can't wait to get out of school.
03:56When they get out of school, it's just hot and boring.
04:00And there's nothing really to do except get in a lot of trouble.
04:03That's my summer.
04:05So that's what I did, and I see a lot of kids doing the same thing.
04:09So I wanted to do a summer song.
04:12I never did a summer song before, and I wanted to do something like that.
04:16Well, let's take a look at it.
04:17Here's Dirty Black Summer from Danzig.

04:34And on the video, for instance, I think it was the video for I'm the One,
04:38you wrestle an alligator.
04:40Yes, this is true.
04:41Is this your idea?
04:42No, it wasn't.
04:43600-pound alligator down on the Louisiana bayous,
04:46about 90 miles outside New Orleans.
04:50And it was kind of funny.
04:53I mean, I thought I was going to wrestle, like, you know, an alligator this big.
04:57Right.
04:58And I guess they all went under the water because it was kind of cold.
05:02So the only one they had was one this big.
05:05And basically, it was a situation where you could get very hurt very quickly.
05:12And they didn't put this rubber thing over his mouth, which they're supposed to.
05:16They just, two times with some black masking tape and said,
05:19those Cajun guys, like, when you grew up on the bayou,
05:22it was like, come on, Glenn, get up, we on a gator.
05:25You know, but don't stand there, he'll break you in half with his face
05:28and don't go back there.
05:29He's going to whack you with his tail, going to crack you in half.
05:32He's going to whack you with his tail, going to crack you in half.
05:35And then he's just bouncing all over him.
05:37Get on up here now, come on.
05:38Get up.
05:39There was another segment in that video which has you running with wolves,
05:42which was, like, really neat stuff.
05:44Yeah.
05:45I like, you know, animals.
05:47I get along very well with animals.
05:49And the wolves, you know, I went down and the wolves said,
05:52be careful with these wolves, this one's very temperamental.
05:55And I started petting them.
05:57Great.
05:58Just like that.
05:59Just like that.

06:18is that you seem to have some influences from Elvis.
06:22This is true.
06:24I think Elvis was a great singer,
06:26regardless of what everyone says about him.
06:29And that's the way it is.
06:32Because I remember you did Trouble when you started off.
06:36We still do that on tour.
06:38Because that was a killer song.
06:39And I think you opened up with that when I saw you play
06:41a couple of years back.
06:42It was always an encore song.
06:44An encore opened up.
06:46It was somewhere in the front of the beginning of this show.
06:48You got there late.
06:49Exactly.
06:50Now tell us about Danzig tour plans right now.
06:52We just finished up some dates with Black Sabbath
06:55just to warm up before we go over to Europe.
06:58We're going to be over there for at least two months.
07:01Then we come back here and do our own tour.
07:04Everyone's scared to have us open a show for them.
07:07Basically.
07:08Now it seems like this record's doing really, really well.
07:11Which I'm very glad,
07:12because I've been telling everybody at home
07:14for a long time, you know,
07:16how the stuff is great.
07:18One thing good about the record
07:20entered into Billboard at 24.
07:22And what it did was it sent a message
07:24to all these people that just think music
07:26what we do is a fluke.
07:28And that, you know,
07:29it shouldn't get airplay here or there.
07:31And that it's just a flash.
07:33It's not going away.
07:34It's staying.
07:35And, you know,
07:36we have more fans now than we ever had.
07:38And basically without any kind of airplay
07:40on MTV or radio, you know,
07:42dedicated fans.
07:44And the fan base is growing.
07:45And one thing that I remember
07:47that I felt glad you did at my club Bordello
07:49a couple years back,
07:50which I brought some of the people, matter of fact,
07:52from this studio down here,
07:53is you played some acoustic stuff,
07:55which was just you sitting around
07:56and it was amazing.
07:57I mean, you've got an amazing voice.
07:59We do that twice a year.
08:00And it was amazing.
08:02Do you ever thought about maybe
08:03sitting down and doing a blues album
08:05or just an acoustic record?
08:07Rick wanted us to do a record like that.
08:09I don't know whether he wants it live or studio.
08:11Maybe we'll do it.
08:13The thing I liked about doing it at your club was
08:15it was, you know,
08:16what, about 50 or 60 people
08:18we could fit down back there.
08:19No, it's as small as this.
08:20Yeah.
08:21And so I like it like that, you know.
08:23Because I think everybody's like,
08:24oh, Danzig is this,
08:25and they don't understand
08:26how talented the band is.
08:27I mean, your drummer, Chuck,
08:28plays on the smallest kit,
08:30but he's got the most amazing sound
08:32and is a great drummer to watch play too.
08:34In my opinion,
08:35he's the best drummer playing today.
08:37I think pretty much in there.
08:39And pretty much a lot of people
08:40just, you know,
08:41come to the show
08:42and they sit their drummer behind him
08:43and say, watch this guy.
08:45Right.
08:46Like Ice-T, you know, drummer.
08:47Uh-huh.
08:48Because he doesn't need that much
08:49but he's just amazing.

09:19producing a Godflesh record,

09:21but it would have to also be,

09:23if they wanted it,

09:25I think they're a great band.
09:26We wanted to bring them
09:27on tour with us
09:28this year
09:29and possibly
09:30we might be able
09:31to get them
09:32on some British shows.
09:33I'd love it.
09:34I think they're a great band.
09:35I think they're very original.
09:36I don't think
09:37there's that many
09:38original bands out today.
09:39Right.
09:40And so
09:41I think originality
09:42should be encouraged
09:43rather than
09:44having people
09:45just imitate
09:46what's popular
09:47because they want
09:48to make money
09:49or they want to have,
09:50you know,
09:51they want to make money
09:52every night
09:53or something.
09:54That's not what music's about.
09:55Right.

09:57we spoke earlier
09:58that you had worked with,
09:59wrote a song

10:01and being
10:02that your
10:03vocal talent
10:04is quite wide,
10:05I mean,
10:06you could probably
10:07work with anybody.
10:08Is there anybody
10:09that you would ever
10:10sing a duet with?
10:11No,
10:12I don't know
10:13about that.
10:14I mean,
10:15you could think
10:16about all sorts of things
10:17or any like
10:18great blues artists
10:19like Fyodor
10:20who was supposed to
10:21sing a verse
10:22on Heart of the Devil.
10:23I went down
10:24and, you know,
10:25met with him
10:26and played him
10:27my stuff
10:28and we were going
10:29to try and write
10:30a song together
10:31also for the record
10:32and then
10:33as we were preparing
10:34for the album
10:35he died.
10:36So,
10:37but it was great
10:38I got to meet
10:39Willie Dixon
10:40who,
10:41in my opinion,
10:42you know,
10:43was one of the great
10:44blues singers
10:45and songwriters.
10:46Was he into your stuff
10:47like Heart of the Devil
10:48is a blues song?
