00:00Happy birthday, sir!
00:03On the island of Sodor, the Fat Controller is very proud of his engines.
00:11He likes them to be on time, puffing proudly, and always helping each other to be really useful.
00:20One morning, Thomas puffed in to Brendam Docks.
00:25Good morning, Salty. Good morning, Edward.
00:28My, my! Your cheeks are as red as me paintwork, me hearty!
00:34I know. I've been pushing and pulling heavy trucks all morning, and I still have a lot of jobs to do.
00:41Suddenly, the Fat Controller raced into the docks in Winston. He's scrunched to a stop by Thomas.
00:50Good morning, sir.
00:52Good morning, Thomas! Today is my birthday, and I am to go shopping with Lady Hat and Dowager Hat.
01:00Happy birthday, sir!
01:02Thank you, Thomas. I would like you to take Winston on your jobs today.
01:07Winston is new to Sodor. It is important that he sees what it is to be really useful.
01:14Thomas beamed from buffer to buffer.
01:18Of course, sir. Right away, sir.
01:21And then, come back to meet me here at tea time.
01:25Shiver me timbers, me hearties!
01:28I remember a story that Edward told me about a birthday surprise for the Fat Controller when he was just a young man.
01:39Thomas's firebox fizzed.
01:42Tell us, Salty.
01:44Salty smiled.
01:46Well now, this goes back a long way, me hearties. Back when Edward first arrived on Sodor.
01:57Every year, on his birthday, Sir Topham Hatt and Edward would visit all of the stations on the railway
02:05and have a slice of birthday cake with the passengers, always in his favourite carriage.
02:12The oldest carriage on Sodor, even older than Edward.
02:19He loved riding in that carriage. I remember his smile, it would light up the sky.
02:27Thomas and Winston listened, even Cranky stopped cranking. Their eyes were wide with wonder.
02:37Ah, tis a pity nobody has seen that carriage for years.
02:44Anyways, I've jobs to do and so have ye.
02:48Thomas pumped his pistons.
02:50We must hurry now, Winston. I have a lot to do.
02:53Of course, Thomas. Ready when you are.
02:57But Winston wasn't thinking about jobs. He was thinking about the Fat Controller and his birthday.
03:06Thomas puffed in to Marron Station.
03:10Hurry, please. I have a lot to do.
03:19Now, Winston, we must hurry to Farmer Trotter's farm with the apples for his pigs.
03:24But Winston didn't answer because Winston wasn't there.
03:30Winston? Winston? Where are you?
03:33I was trying to look for something.
03:36Looking for things is not being really useful. Come along. No time to lose.
03:41Winston wanted to say more, but Thomas wasn't interested in what Winston was trying to do.
03:48Thomas had jobs to do.
03:53Thomas pulled in to Farmer Trotter's farm.
03:57Here are your apples, Farmer Trotter.
03:59Thank you, Thomas. You're just in time. And really useful.
04:03That made Thomas very happy.
04:06Now, Winston, we must hurry to the Whispering Woods to pick up some logs.
04:11But Winston didn't answer because Winston wasn't there.
04:17Winston? Winston? Where are you?
04:23I'm sorry, Thomas. I was looking for...
04:25Looking for things is not being really useful.
04:29Being on time is. Come along.
04:32Winston wanted to say more, but Thomas was already steaming away to his next job.
04:40At the Whispering Woods, the workman was happy to see Thomas.
04:50Thank you, Thomas.
04:52Now I have to hurry back to the Fat Controller for tea time.
04:55But Winston didn't answer because Winston wasn't there.
05:00Winston? Winston? Where are you?
05:06I think I might have found something.
05:09We don't have time to find things, Winston.
05:12The Fat Controller will be waiting. Please go in front of me.
05:16Then I won't lose you again.
05:18So Thomas puffed away with wisdom.
05:23Thomas puffed away with Winston right in front.
05:28Winston clickety-clack slowly on the tracks.
05:32His eyes looked to left and right into the woods.
05:37Winston, it's almost tea time. We must hurry.
05:43Then there was trouble. Winston slowed, but Thomas didn't.
05:48He was too busy rushing to be a really careful engine.
05:53With a crash and a bang, Thomas bumped into Winston.
05:58Luckily, no one was hurt, but Thomas felt terrible.
06:04Winston, the Fat Controller asked me to show you how to be really useful,
06:08not really silly, and now we're late for the Fat Controller on his birthday.
06:15Winston smiled. He didn't want Thomas to be upset.
06:20But Thomas, I think I found something that will make the Fat Controller very happy.
06:27Thomas was puzzled.
06:29What have you been looking for?
06:32I've been looking for the carriage the Fat Controller used to ride in on his birthday.
06:38This time Thomas was excited to hear more.
06:42Thomas was excited to know more.
06:45Tell me, Winston.
06:47Look, Thomas, over there.
06:52It's the old carriage, just like Salty said.
06:56You found it, Winston.
06:58We can take it to Victor at the Steamworks.
07:02He'll clean it up and we can give the Fat Controller the biggest birthday surprise ever.
07:08And Winston smiled his biggest smile.
07:15Thomas and Winston arrived at the docks.
07:19The Fat Controller was waiting.
07:21Thomas, you're late. Where have you been?
07:25I'm sorry, sir, but may we show you the reason we're late?
07:30If you'll allow us, can we take you to Knapford Station?
07:34Very well, Thomas. I will drive Winston.
07:38Winston and Thomas smiled, and without saying another word, Thomas chuffed away.
07:47At Knapford Station, Thomas waited for Winston and the Fat Controller.
07:53Well, Thomas, why did you bring me to Knapford?
07:56Just then, Edward chuffed into Knapford pulling the old carriage.
08:03The Fat Controller couldn't believe his eyes.
08:06Oh, my! I remember this.
08:11Every year, on my birthday.
08:16Happy birthday, sir!
08:18The Fat Controller smiled.
08:21What a marvellous surprise!
08:26Thank you, Thomas. Thank you, Winston.
08:30I can see you've both had a really useful day.
08:34And that made Thomas and Winston happier than ever.
