00:00Hi, I'm Dr. McCann. I'm board-certified in OBGYN as well as obesity medicine and
00:07today we're going to go over the top three tips for losing even more weight
00:13if you're already on what people are calling the weight loss injections. So
00:18what are these injections? These injections include medicine like the
00:22semaglutide, otherwise known as Ozempic, and the Mongero. The semaglutide has
00:30been FDA approved for weight loss in certain individuals. The Mongero is not
00:35FDA approved specifically for weight loss but for type 2 diabetes. But in both
00:41of these medications, people are experiencing a significant amount of
00:47weight loss and it can be very effective in helping people lose weight, especially
00:52people with limited mobility that can't exercise enough to actually get the
00:57weight off that they need to get off. So before we start the tips, we are going to
01:02go do a small overview of what these medicines are and who actually takes
01:07them. So how do these injections work? Well, they work by several different
01:13mechanisms. First of all, they work by inhibiting glucagon release, which is
01:20what makes you hungry. They decrease glucose production from the liver or
01:25decrease gluconeogenesis. It delays gastric emptying and it also decreases
01:32appetite. And all of these do lead to what can be significant weight loss.
01:40These medicines are not for everybody. There are several contraindications
01:45listed by the manufacturers, which include a personal or family history of
01:50thyroid cancer or other endocrine problems or cancers. So obviously, you
01:56would want to notify your physician if you have any of these
01:59contraindications. And there can be side effects of these medicines. They can
02:05cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Most of these side
02:10effects go away or subside after taking these medicines for a few weeks, but they
02:16can be prolonged and sometimes they don't go away. So that is a few
02:22important factors that you need to know about the medications to begin with. Now,
02:26what I like to tell my patients is to use these medicines to really start your
02:32lifestyle change. So you will have some... most people will have some weight loss
02:37and some people have some significant weight loss with the aid of these
02:40injections. You want to go ahead and use this starting point to make your
02:46lifestyle change and to be able to keep the weight off after you get done with
02:53the injections. So we're going to go ahead and go over the three most
02:57important tips that you need to start while you're on the injections to lose
03:03even more weight and to help keep the weight off after you're done with
03:08the injections. Okay, so tip number one and the one of the most important
03:16lifestyle changes that you need to make is stop all sodas. Yes, I said all sodas
03:24and sugary drinks like slushes or other sugary coffee beverages that you might
03:32like. Drinking one can of soda can make you gain 15 pounds over the year... over
03:40one year. One can a day, 15 pounds over one year. So this is a very important
03:47step to lose the amount of weight that you want and to be able to keep it off.
03:51It's virtually impossible to lose weight and keep it off if you drink soda,
03:57especially more than one can. But again, even one can a day will make you gain 15
04:03pounds over a year and it's not just soda. Again, it's sugary slushy drinks,
04:08sugary coffee, any beverages that have a lot of sugar. You need to go ahead and
04:14work on stopping those now. I'm not saying give up caffeine. If you still need
04:19caffeine, coffee is a great alternative, especially either black coffee or mixed
04:25with a little bit of stevia or a sugar-free skinny latte is also a great
04:33option. So you don't have to give up your caffeine, but you do need to give up all
04:37soda. Tip number two is protein, protein, protein. Make sure that when you feel
04:47like eating, you get your protein, specifically lean protein. Again, these
04:52medications work by decreasing your appetite and delaying gastric emptying.
04:57So when you do eat or take in calories, it's important that you get those
05:03calories from protein. So protein is what builds your muscle and your muscle is
05:09what burns calories. So if you don't take in enough protein, you will lose your
05:14muscle and you won't be able to burn as many calories as you did before losing
05:20that muscle. So protein increases your metabolism by increasing your muscle and
05:27that, again, lets you burn more calories. So make sure when you do eat that it's
05:33protein and specifically the lean protein. And for more detail about this,

05:45need to take to keep the weight off after you're done with the weight loss
05:49injections. And the third tip is exercise. So you've probably already guessed this,
05:57but exercise is very important for weight loss, for keeping the weight off,
06:03for losing it, for your cardiovascular health. And you may not know, but it
06:07actually is a natural remedy for anxiety because it releases cortisol. So exercise
06:13is great for your body. Now if you don't already have an exercise program, you
06:18don't need to go spend an hour a day at the gym. If you're just starting out 20
06:23minutes four times a week through a high intensity training, something like kick
06:28classes, will be just fine starting out. Now as you start exercising and start
06:34losing weight, you are going to want to increase the time and the intensity. But
06:39starting out 20 minutes, that's all you need. You can do that. You can do 20
06:43minutes of high-intensity exercise at the gym four times a week. And that's if
06:49you don't have physical limitations. If you do have physical limitations, exercise
06:54is still important, but you may need to talk to a personal trainer to see what
06:58exercises that you specifically can do to help you keep your muscle. So exercise
07:03is very effective at keeping your muscle and we've already gone over the fact
07:07that the muscle burns calories and increases your metabolism. So if you're
07:12on the injections that are called the weight loss injections, make sure to use
07:18this weight loss boost to start your healthy living so that you can lose even
07:24more weight and be able to keep it off after you stop the injections. If you
