00:49Thankfully, kumpleto ang tulog ko for today and I have the energy and the right headspace
00:55to do this interview.
00:57Anna sabi, ang mga Pinoy, at least among Southeast Asia, tayong mga pinaka-puyat. Do you see
01:04that? So I know your experience because of your graveyard shift na experience mo yun.
01:09But do you see people around you na oo nga, kahit hindi necessarily graveyard shift, talagang
01:15pagod na pagod tayong mga Pinoy.
01:17I empathize with those people and I know and I experienced first-hand how difficult it
01:22is. And to be honest, nakakaingit yung mga taong hindi kailangan dumaan sa gano'ng situation
01:28in life. And ayun, in a way, yun yung malungkot na part na we have to embrace this reality
01:36na people are still undergoing through this. And it's really contributing to a lot of mental
01:44health issues. And ayun, sobrang mahirap siya. Pero it is what it is. Talagang, at the time,
01:54I had to make ends meet with what I have. Sobrang idea nung gano'ng setup na lahat day jobs.
02:04Kasi siyempre kahit sabihin natin, parang may mga kailangan tumao sa atin kahit gabi.
02:10So ayun, mahirap siya. And it's something na siguro it will be a part of society in the long run.
02:20Pero ayun, it's still unhealthy.
02:22So iba yung pagpupuyat nung bata ka kasi gusto mong makausap ang mga friends mo o kaya mag-online
02:28games. Pero iba yung required ka ng magpuyat. So anong oras yung working hours mo nun?
02:34Siguro what made it difficult though was at the time, iba iba yung shift ko. Parang it could go
02:40as early as 8 p.m. and as late as 11 p.m. ng start. So since 8-hour shift, wala pang overtime to.
02:48So ang average na week o that time are around 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.
02:54Kamusta yung pinaka-unang sabak mo dun? Kasi yun siguro yung pinaka-mahirap na adjustment, tama ba?
03:00I wouldn't say mahirap na adjustment kasi parang puyat na talaga ako way before.
03:04Pero ayun, siguro nahirapan ako nung dumating na ako sa second job ko.
03:09Kasi after that, nagpahinga ko ng ilang months because I was doing my thesis.
03:13Kasi I'm already in my final year of college at the time.
03:17Tapos, naisipan ko mag-freelancing, maging independent contractor. So I became an assistant for
03:25PL tours abroad. So talagang graveyard ako kasi ang umaga sa kanila yun sa U.S.
03:31Tapos at the time, doon na rin bumabalik yung physical classes. So unti-unti na siyang bumabalik sa face-to-face.
03:40Doon ako nahirapan, doc. Kasi parang I have to go to work.
03:45Tapos minsan, parang may conferences ako na umaga.
03:49After nang-shift ko, di direto na ako doon. Wala nang pahinga. Parang ang pahinga ko na yung pagligo ko.
03:55Dumating sa ganong level. So ayun, doon ako nahirapan in a sense na
04:00dati, parang dati nakaka-enjoy magpuyat. Parang chill lang.
04:05Until, parang siguro embedded sa akin na mahihirapan ka talaga if you're forced to do something.
04:11Kahit alam mong sanay ka sa ganong setup.
04:14So yung working at night or graveyard shift, parang it sounds like nung una mo siyang sinubukan,
04:19hindi ka naman sobrang puyat more than your usual. Kasi nakakapahinga ka sa umaga.
04:24Yes.
04:25Kasi online classes. Pero yung totoong puyat, di ba? Ang puyat is kakulangan sa pagtulog.
04:30And I think people na nag-succeed sa graveyard shift lifestyle is because marunong silang matulog kahit ang aga-aga.
04:37Di ba? Ang bright pa ng kwarto nila.
04:40Yes, yes.
04:41Pero yung totoong talagang puyat. Sabi mo nga, parang wow, pagkatapos ng trabaho,
04:46ligo lang, diretso na sa klase. Ano yung feeling nun?
04:51Ano yung experience mong nasa school kang hindi ka pa natutulog?
04:55Siguro doon pumasok yung challenge na I have to be in two worlds in a way.
05:02Kasi being a working student is already difficult as it is. Iba pa yung kailangan at least 16 hours kang gising.
05:12Parang yung matitirang 8 hours mo sa 24 hours kailangan ihahabol mo pa sa homework, deliverable sa work.
05:19So parang doon ako nauga in a sense na ay, ang hirap pala nito. Parang huwag na pala akong bayaran, sige matutulog talaga.
05:28Parang dumating sa point na I feel undercompensated just solely because sleep felt like a luxury.
05:35Parang at that point, parang mas valuable na yung tulog kesa sa PEA.
05:40Ah, exactly.
05:41Kamusta ang buhay na baliktad ang mundo, so to speak? Kasi diba papasok ka gabi,
05:46tapos na yung mga tao, diba? Tapos paglabas mo, umaga na. Ano yung lifestyle na yun, diba? Meron bang drawbacks?
05:55Minsan may benefits kasi parang, alam mo yun, dumating sa point na neromanticize ko na lang yung mamumuhay ng gabit.
06:03Parang sabi ko, okay, I'm just listening to music, going to work, tapos walking lang.
06:08I love walking kasi, walking outdoors. So walking through the night is something I love.
06:14Even before I get to do graveyard shifts.
06:19Dati, in the long run, parang naging malungkot na rin. Wala nang tao.
06:27Parang despite my love for outdoor walks, social butterfly din kasi ako.
06:32So parang hindi ko kayang maging functional kung walang tao sa paligid.
06:36So ayun, parang that time, ay, papasok lang ako for work.
06:40Parang there's nothing productive in terms of, you know, knowing na papasok ko pa lang, tulog na yung iba.
06:47Parang you're getting prepped for work, tapos na sila, parang they're getting, alam mo yun, you're getting prepared na to sleep and to rest.
06:58And at the time, sana all na lang ang nasasabi ko ko. Sobrang difficulty nga.
07:04Pero ayun, sige, ni-romanticize ko na lang. Kaya for some time, or at some point, I enjoyed it.
07:11At what point mo na-miss na talaga yung tulog? Diba sabi mo kanina parang, after all, ay, hindi na sulit.
07:18Mas gusto ko na matulog kaysa kumita. At ano na yung nasa sense mo, ano yung nararamdaman mo, na parang, uy, parang hindi na okay to?
07:25Nung hukabalik na po yung face-to-face classes actually.
07:28Kaya at that time, may contractual lang kasi ako sa previous work na yun. Kasi for the sake of trying lang naman.
07:36Tapos dumating na yung fourth year thesis, medyo magastos kasi graduating.
07:42Tapos dumating sa point na our family is not doing well financially so I had to go back.
07:48Tapos dun ako pumasok sa freelancing. Work from home naman po siya.
07:51Pero ayun, medyo malungkot kasi di ako nakakalabas.
07:55Parang same set up without going outside naman. Pero yung I was going outside para mag-aral na ulit.
08:03So daylight naman yun. So doon na pumasok po yung after ko, after ng shift po.
08:08Diretso ako to do my deliverables sa school naman.
08:11Parang naging baligtad po siya kasi diba parang nabanggit ko po kanina.
08:15Nung nasa BPO ako, I had to do my homework first.
08:21Tapos ngayon po, I had to finish my deliverables sa work muna bago ako mag-proceed sa school.
08:26Kasi kailangan ko na mag-focus sa thesis ko.
08:29So parang nagkabaligtad siya that time.
08:34Liam, nasense ko, dalawang beses mo nang nabanggit, nalungkot ka talaga.
08:38Lonely ba? Ang night shift, ang huya, working at night.
08:44Opo, in a way. Kasi ito naman, at least nung nasa BPO ako, I was working on-site.
08:49At least may katabi ako sa table na alam mo yun kapag in between calls, sabang nagingintay,
08:56or during lunch break, at least may kakwinto ka na ko ito talaga wala.
09:00Parang dumating sa point na during breaks, talagang lumiidlip na lang po talaga ako.
09:07At that point, talagang any minute, any 5 minutes, pag pwedeng matulog, matutulog ka na.
09:14Yes, I'm taking every chance I get. Kapag nagkaroon ng time magpahinga, kahit 5 minutes lang siya.
09:19Talagang doon ko na-appreciate yung concept ng power napping.
09:24Yung 5 minutes tapos okay, snap, I have to go back.
09:28Talagang dumating sa point na ganoon na siya.
09:31At any point na, nakatulog ka na sa klase or something?
09:36Way before naman po minsan, to be honest.
09:39So ano yung mga naging experiences mo habang puyat ka?
09:44Diba minsan may nangyayari sa katawan natin?
09:47Diba medyo minsan kung ano na nangyayari sa brains natin pag sobrang lutang na talaga,
09:52diba, or sobrang puyat?
09:54Ano yung experience sa katawan? May nasense ka bang mga changes?
10:00Dumating sa point na kahit sa movie or angkas, nakaka-edlip na ako.
10:05Uy, hindi ba delikado yun?
10:07Delikado nga po. Sabi ko, papikit-papikit ako.
10:10Sabi ko, hindi pwede ito. Baka mayroon pag pumikit ako, baka wala nang gisingan.
10:14Baka huling tulog ko na po yung wala nang gisingan after.
10:16So pinipersan ko talaga dumilat.
10:19Dumating sa point na ganoon.
10:20Tapos, minsan, parang known niya ako to be an extrovert.
10:25Tapos, alam kong lutang na ako kapag I'm getting lost in the mid-conversation.
10:30So, ayun, medyo mahirap siya.
10:34Kasi, minsan, ako talaga yung nag-initiate ng conversation.
10:39Tapos, alam kong I'm not doing well.
10:41Dumating sa point na umuoko na lang ako kahit di ko na alam yung nangyayari.
10:46Napapansin ba ng mga friends mo?

10:50Parang, ano, kasi sobrang I'm that kind of person na sobrang daling ba sa akin yung kodtel kapag wala ko sa wisyo.

11:04Na pumasok daw siya nung Sabado. Kahit Sunday pa yung pasok niya.
11:07Ganoon siya kapuyat.
11:08Sa maling araw siya pumasok.
11:10And she caused a stir only to find out that she was the one that was wrong.
11:14Nangyayari na ba sayo? Parang di mo na malaman.
11:18Tuesday? Wednesday?
11:20Dumating sa point na wala na akong state of time.
11:22Early naman po ako dumating sa ganyang level.
11:24Parang wala na akong sense of time na.
11:26Yung oras lang. Yung oras lang yung medyo naninibago ka.
11:28Parang sabi ko, hala 30 days pala to.
11:30Kala ko ano, 50 days. Ganoon.
11:32Yung isang calendar month.
11:34Yung isang buwan.
11:36Parang minsan may long days.
11:38Parang in a way kasi siguro, interpretation ko lang to of how my day went by during working in a graveyard shift na.
11:47Parang mas mahaba yung araw kasi sa gabi.
11:49Mas matagal siya.
11:51Parang in a way naging masipag katuloy no.
11:53Kasi inuuna mo tuloy.
11:54Diba? Dinagawa mo kagad yung homework mo.
11:56Tinatapos mo kagad yung tasks.
11:58Walang petics-petics.
11:59Opo, yan na lang po yung naging silver lining.
12:02Kasi talagang dumating sa point na rest became a luxury.
12:07And parang I will seize the opportunity each time I get it.
12:13So, talagang dumating ako sa point na ganoon.
12:17And thankfully, wala na ako sa ganoon situation.
12:19But, yeah, it's pretty much how my life was during working in a graveyard shift.
12:26Parang nagkaroon ka ba ng any physical health issues?
12:30Or, yung iba kasi nagkakasakit.
12:33Liam, diba?
12:34Meron ang mga kakilala.
12:36Nagkakasakit talaga sila pag sobrang nagpupuyat.
12:40Ano po, pinapanalangin ko naman po na huwag po ako dumating dyan.
12:44Pero, siguro nakaka-affection sa akin mentally.
12:47Kasi talagang, ang naging coping mechanism ko po talaga mag-stress eating.
12:50And I gained a lot of weight throughout the pandemic.
12:53So, parang in a way, sa graveyard shift ko po, sinisisi ang pagtabako.
13:01Apart from that, siguro yung dizziness.
13:04I mean, small things siya.
13:07It's a small thing kapag iniisip ko ngayon.
13:09Pero, in the long run, it's gonna tarnish your health and well-being talaga.
13:13So, parang thankful ako na natapos siya agad on my part.
13:17Yeah.
13:18And so, yung stress eating, kasi you're stressed.
13:21Parang, hindi lang siya.
13:23So, puyat, syempre, diba?
13:25So, kung puyat, talagang pagod na ang bigat ng katawan.
13:28Diba?
13:29Parang, yung dapat madaling task, minsan nagiging mahirap, nagiging matagal.
13:33Kasi hindi tayo nasa ideal na kondisyon.
13:37And then, sabi mo nga pang yung life mo, parang mas limited.
13:40Kahit na i-romanticize natin, ibig sabihin ay lonely.
13:43Diba?
13:44Yes.
13:45Wala masyadong life.
13:46Or, ano bang life ang meron sa gabi?
13:48Parang iba rin e, diba?
13:50Medyo iba rin yung social life sa gabi.
13:53Hindi rin sya conducive to a healthy lifestyle.
13:57Tama ba?
13:58I absolutely agree with you, Doc.
14:00Talagang, hindi naman ito ako totally nawalan on my part.
14:03Pero talagang dumating sa point na I limited myself na socially.
14:08Just to make ends meet for me, the way I live.
14:13And siguro to make ends meet in a way na I have, I will be able to get the luxury of sleep.
14:19And it's really difficult to claim it as a luxury when it's something na you should be having talaga as a person.
14:27So ayun, talagang I had to compromise even.
14:32I have to compromise something na hindi ko talaga dapat kinakompromise in the first place.
14:38So ngayon, may day job ka na.
14:40Congratulations, nag-graduate ka na from graveyard shift.
14:44Anong pinaka malaking difference?
14:47I mean, obviously the time difference.
14:49Pero in terms of quality of life, yung experience mo.
14:52Ano yung pinaka malaking difference?
14:54Siguro mas mabilis yung araw talaga pag sa umaga ka nang tatrabaho.
14:57I work for the government na.
14:59So talagang naranasan ko na 8 to 5 na job.
15:02Minsan mag-overtime naman in a way.
15:04Siguro latest na yung 7 or 8 p.m.
15:07Pero alam mo yun, uuwi ka na lang po talaga para magpahinga.
15:10And para makakampante ka na, alam mo yun, pagsakay mo sa jeep.
15:15Ah, may mga pangapauwi na rin ito.
15:18Talagang, alam mo yun, makakampante ako na ayun magpapahinga ko.
15:22Kasama na ako doon sa, parang...
15:25Mahuhuwi?
15:26Opo, naging biruan na nga namin ito sa...
15:28I still have friends kasi working in the graveyard shift.
15:31Tapos parang, ay, totoong tao ka na.
15:36Talagang dumating na po kami sa point na, ayun.
15:39It's a norm.
15:40Parang ayun, I...
15:42Siguro kasi, I've been...
15:44Nag-aaral ako as a kid.
15:46Talagang sanay ka sa umaga.
15:49Siguro parang, there's a sense of normalcy na lang.
15:53With how I handle my work now.
15:55And ayun, nas-productive talaga ako.
15:58Minsan ako puyat pa rin.
15:59Pero, alam mo yun, buhabalik na po ako sa...
16:02Ay, puyat ako kasi gusto ko.
16:04Not because I have to.
16:06Unhealthy pa rin, pero nalilimit naman na siya.
16:09Since this is a government.
16:11As a public servant, you have to stay alert.
16:14So, dumat na yun.
16:17Bihira na lang, thankfully.
16:19In a way, doc, parang...
16:21Ang hirap namang pakinggan na I claim it as a reward
16:24when it's something that we should be having to begin with.
16:27Even our circumstances say otherwise.
16:30Pero ayun, parang ganun nga po yung feeling ko.
16:32I feel rewarded na.
16:35It's rewarding to feel na...
16:39Uuwi akong may tao pa.
16:41Hindi parang yung mga...
16:44Dati kasi aalis ako, tulog na yung mga kasama ko sa bahay.
16:47Tapos nakakasaluban ko sila.
16:49Sabay-sabay na matutulog and all.
16:51So, it's really a different experience.
16:53And even though it shouldn't be rewarding,
16:55it feels rewarding on my part.
16:57So, ayun.
16:59Parang feeling mo, uy, may life na ulit.
17:02Nakakasama ko na yung mga mahal ko sa buhay.
17:05Mas marami ka nang pwedeng gawin.
17:07Minsan sometimes after work is when we want to go out.
17:11Meet up with our friends.
17:12Nagagawa ko na ulit siya.
17:14I'm so happy for you, Lia.
17:17Dati kasi talagang...
17:18Dati mag-out ako sa work.
17:20Tapos paglabas ko sa work, sarado pa rin yung mga mall.
17:24Dumating ako sa point na gano'n.
17:25Bayan, hindi ako makakapasyal.
17:27Parang yun na nga lang yung way ko to escape reality.
17:30Kahit saglit lang.
17:31Kahit 30 minutes lang ako maglakad-lakad sa SM.
17:34Tapos ngayon nagagawa ko na siya.
17:37It feels rewarding na I'm able to do the things that I want.
17:41Then siguro kasi hindi na ako nag-aaral.
17:43Kaya lesser stress.
17:47So dapat talaga, no matter what.
17:49Parang sabi mo nga, hanapan mo ng life hack.
17:51Find the way.
17:52And in a way, commit na valuable.
17:55Worth it.
17:56Sulit ang tulog.
17:58Oo.
17:59And a lot of that is controlling your own time.
18:03Having a rich life.
18:04Sabi mo nga, may life ka pa outside of work.
18:07So hindi naman natin mahihiwalang yung puyat at pagod at trabaho.
18:11Yes, absolutely.
18:12I have to agree with you naman on that.
