Sox or Pats? Who has the brighter future?
Transcript
00:00But my question is as the Patriots prepare for their final preseason game, the training camp
00:06portion of their summer is over. Who do you feel better about just as a fan of the organization,
00:15the direction, where they're going? We don't know the quarterback situation. Courtney found some
00:21good audio we'll get to for during they said it at seven on Drake May. Just a general question.
00:26As a fan, as an observer of both teams, who do you feel better about today?
00:29I think it's simply it's the Red Sox. Thank you. It only took you guys three days
00:34to turn the tune. And I said on Monday. Turn the tune to what? Because on Monday,
00:38it was doomsday. Everybody was saying this Red Sox team, they suck. They're doing it again.
00:44Some people were saying you got to blame the players. I know Wiggy was talking about you
00:48got to blame. Well, you were on the players. Greg was saying you got to blame the front office.
00:52And I said, all you need to do is win the next two series or go 500 over the next two series.
00:57And then you're going to have an easy road for a bit a week. And everybody's going to be back on
01:03board. And they're already back on board. Well, they win this series and things are looking
01:07bright again. Well, I have to say the Red Sox are more exciting or or more hopeful.
01:13Well, I think Curtis says when he asks the question, do you this still, you know,
01:19going to tease us and not like look at like this team could make the playoffs. But I think the
01:24question is, when you look at this team and you compare it to the Patriots, and I think it's like
01:29because it wasn't really about excitement. What was your question? Who do you feel better? Like,
01:32is it the direction of the organization, the direction of the organization? When you start
01:36to look at the players from the Red Sox, you got young guys like Jaron Duran. Yeah. So Don
01:42Raphael, like you could see these guys in the future. Brian Bale, Tannehall Hawk. When you
01:47look at the Patriots, you're you you don't know what the future holds for those players. I mean,
01:54the only real player that you look at, you go, OK, he looks like he could be a bright spot
01:59moving forward in the future is like really Christian Gonzalez offensively. Is there like
02:04a bright spot that you could say moving forward for the Patriots in the future?
02:08Drake Bay. Well, I think the Drake may that's our expectations, but they're not giving him
02:13that opportunity to prove that to us or at least let us see it. We're all hoping that at least with
02:19some of those Red Sox plays, we're actually seeing them perform. Yeah. And I go Patriots for just the
02:25simple fact that Gerard Mayo was very kind. No, I it's Drake May, because if there's a chance,
02:33he's really good. Yes. And if they have that guy, nothing else matters. Right. So and approaching
02:40the the divisions in which they each play, the AFC East, I think, is on the downside of what was
02:47this sort of renaissance where you had the the Dolphins, Jets and Bills all really good, really
02:54investing, whether it was Steph Diggs with Josh Allen or Tyreek Hill with Tua or Aaron Rodgers
03:00with the Jets. I don't think I think the ascension of Drake May will lead him past the organizations
03:06that had been building up for winning now. I think the AFC East will be an easier division.
03:12The American League East is the best division in baseball. Maybe you could say NLS, but I mean,
03:17it's an excellent, difficult place to play. And the Patriots have to spend this offseason to remain
03:24cap compliant and to comply with the collective bargaining agreement. I don't know if either is
03:31going to be championship ready, but I just I approached this weekend and we saw yesterday
03:37Chris Mason. I saw on X say that first time all year, Drake May got reps in eleven and eleven
03:44in practice with the ones, which is a huge development. Right. And that in and of itself
03:50made me think maybe there's a shot he could play week one. There is. But then again, he's still
03:55the great unknown, at least with the Red Sox. We kind of know what some of these young guys are.
04:00We know what kind of I mean, we don't know like 100 percent, but we see good production.
04:07We we all want Drake May to play, but even if he plays, it's still a great unknown. We're all
04:12hoping that he does have that. And yes, if he is that type of quarterback, I would agree that you
04:17then have that guy to propel your team to the next level. But sitting here today. Yes. Sitting
04:22here today and looking maybe six months, eight months down the road. I think the Red Sox this
04:29offseason spend good money to add to a young core. They re-signed Alex Corso. They're in the
04:37mode of, all right, we're trying to win within the next couple of years. Well, Alex Corso is still
04:42here. They're not like looking five years down the road. Yeah. I mean, I was just interested in where
04:47you guys sat on that. Another thing that's been weird and I just go back Thursday a week ago
04:54where entering the second preseason game, I think we all were down in the dumps. Like
05:00the first preseason game was such a absolute disaster. Then they had the awful joint
05:06practices with the Philadelphia Eagles. And I think just speaking for myself, I didn't go into
05:11game two of the preseason thinking I was going to see anything new. And then Drake May played great
05:16and Jacoby Brissett played poorly and it felt like there was a shot in the arm Friday, Saturday,
05:21Sunday. And then this week it's been a steady sort of droning on towards Jacoby Brissett is the
05:29inevitable starter. And I guess my question is why? Do you think the organization is afraid
05:37if they say that if they do this too quickly that Drake May will embarrass himself? Or
05:44what is the calculus, Wiggy first, because you played, in the organization as to why they are
05:50so hesitant to say that Drake May could possibly be the starter? Because they subscribe to the
05:56Tom Brady theory. It seems like we don't want to rush them in there. We want to develop them.
06:02We don't have no issues with starting Jacoby Brissett. That's their kind of subscription of
06:11how they view a young quarterback. They're not subscribing to the way maybe Washington's doing
06:17it or some of these other teams are doing and saying, all right, we drafted this kid number
06:22three overall, he's playing and let's see what we got. They're going in the other direction.
06:26So that's the only thing I could think of. And based off of what Mayo said,
06:29that's kind of direction they're going in. I think they're so nervous to have a bad quarterback
06:35situation after the seasons they had with Mac Jones and how all the attention was around Mac
06:41Jones, how the team handled him, how he fared in New England. And while we always bring up,
06:46well, Mac's first season that he got the start, he played pretty well. His rookie season, he was
06:51good. But I think that the bad taste left in their mouth at the quarterback position, they want to go
06:56the safe route and they want to put somebody out there that people have seen before playing in the
07:00NFL. So putting out Jacoby Brissett in my mind is the safe situation. I don't agree with it because
07:06everything I've seen, heard from Drake May seems like he is prepared and ready for that role.
07:11I don't think mentally he's weak and can't handle it. I don't think anybody can ruin him moving
07:17forward. So I think they need to give Drake May more credit. But I think that as an organization,
07:23the taste that was left in their mouth after the Mac Jones couple of years, that's the reason why.
07:28But do you guys think that, and I kind of see what you're saying there, Courtney,
07:33I do like this probably like, we don't want to mess this kid up. But do you think with this whole,
07:38because when we talked to Mayo, it was, we had a plan, we had a plan, we had a plan,
07:43we had a plan, this is our plan. Do you think that plan was, okay, we're going with Jacoby Brissett
07:51early, but our plan is we are eventually going to get Drake May in there this season?
07:59Yeah, I have to imagine it wasn't a full year of watching for Drake May. But I also think that
08:05Jacoby Brissett was something they took for granted. They thought he was going to come in
08:10here and be better than he's been. And I feel like that, of all the things that have happened
08:15at training camp, Brissett's inability to really take the job and run with it has been what has
08:21allowed Drake May to be in this position. And I heard a lot of people discussing this this week,
08:28and Zoe, who does the games for the CBS, was saying that he thinks there's a chance that
08:35Drake gets the start Sunday night. And that would be awesome for me.
08:39You mean week one?
08:40No, Sunday against the commanders that you give him an opportunity to actually have that,
08:45you know, take that job, start the game, see if you can give him an opportunity. And I think more
08:50than ever, with the Patriots, at least since the Tom and Bill years, I feel like the fan base
08:57has a voice. And I was not at the preseason games, but there was a legitimate anger in
09:04the first preseason game when Drake May was benched after one series. And there was legitimate
09:09buzz when Drake May went into that game in the second quarter. I feel like the organization
09:16starting Jacoby Brissett into the year would be doing damage to its product and to what the
09:23fan base. I mean, we see those people, Courtney, every day around Castle Island, the great guys
09:28that sit right across from the hockey rink. They are season ticket holders. They are enraged.
09:34They want to see the future now. People are ready for it. They want to invest their time
09:39and see what this kid has. And they all expect him to be the guy. And if he's not the guy,
09:44then it's OK. But at least you know it sooner rather than later.
09:48But that's what people and we want. I almost feel like their way of thinking is the Brady way of
09:55thinking, where we're not going to rush this kid in. Our expectations are not to make the playoffs.
10:02So if we got to wait four or five weeks till we feel more comfortable in seeing what our team
10:09looks like offensively before we insert Drake May as the full-time starter, we'll do that.
10:16That's the way I believe they're feeling. I think a little bit is what you said, Courtney.
10:21A little bit is kind of like they're skittish of maybe the relationship that Mac Jones had with
10:26the previous coaching staff. And I think it's more like, let's, you know, it's almost like,
10:32let's ease him on in there. Let's let him crawl before he walks, where we want him to be like,
10:39all right, listen, you can't crawl. You got to stand up, walk, and learn how to walk and run
10:44real quick. But this entire off season, he's been crawling. Like he has been named the number
10:49two behind Jacoby Brissett. They didn't just throw him in there as the number one. No, but I'm talking
10:53about real games. No, I know. But I'm just saying like, I'm okay if you want to have him crawl,
10:56have him crawl during the off season, have him crawl during training camp. Once game time comes,
11:01he should be running. Right. But I think that's their thing. They're like, we're not going to
11:05force them in there. They're going to subscribe to some people who think like, hey, don't rush
11:09a young guy. Let Jacoby Brissett play. If things look bad, then guess what? At least you give Drake
11:15May some time. You kind of know where your team is. So when you do put him in there, you kind of
11:20can control some of the things like maybe it left tackle struggling. It's like, all right, well,
11:25we can't do many. We can't do this with Drake May because we don't have confidence in our own line.
11:30So let's not force that. Let's run the ball. Let's get the ball out of his hands quickly.
11:34But I think at least they'll be able to see that. And this is what I'm thinking,
11:38that they're thinking when they go with the Jacoby Brissett as the starter for the first
11:43couple of weeks.
