00:00:00This interview has been tape recorded and I'm DC Louise Thomas of CID in Aberystwyth
00:00:11Police Station.
00:00:12April!
00:00:13April!
00:00:14Also present is DC Noel Blakeman.
00:00:24It's the biggest missing person search in British Police history.
00:00:30In October 2012, April Jones disappeared close to her home in the town of Machynlleth, Wales.
00:00:36Can you give me a full name and date of birth please?
00:00:39It's Mark Leonard Bridger, 6th of the 11th, 1965.
00:00:44Within 24 hours, local man Mark Bridger was arrested on suspicion of her abduction.
00:00:50The date is the 2nd of October 2012 and we're in Aberystwyth Police Station.
00:00:55Desperate to bring April home alive, police spent five days face to face with their prime
00:01:00suspect.
00:01:01Mark, we don't want her to suffer anymore.
00:01:06If he was going to conceal her body, because April's size, she'd be quite easy to conceal.
00:01:12But Bridger refused to give up April, even as a nation prayed for her safe return.
00:01:18If you saw anything, heard anything, help this family find their lovely child.
00:01:23Now using police recordings never before heard.
00:01:27We need to bring her home.
00:01:29I know.
00:01:31Interviews with April's family and, for the first time, with the two detectives who led
00:01:36Bridger's questioning.
00:01:39You could see the pure venom in his face.
00:01:43He did not like to be depicted as a paedophile.
00:01:47With unprecedented access to police evidence and those who pieced it together.
00:01:53I'm being told that there is no forensic evidence, nothing.
00:01:58And the forensic psychologist brought in, who's never spoken before about the case.
00:02:03He probably was someone who had fantasized about abducting and murdering a child.
00:02:09This is the hour by hour story of how police tried to extract the truth from the man they
00:02:15believed had murdered April.
00:02:17We needed Mark Bridger to talk and that is down to me and Lou.
00:02:23All of the evidence suggests that you have abducted April.
00:02:26It happened exactly the way I tell you.
00:02:29I did not abduct April.
00:02:46Little deowl, little devil, that's what we used to call her, because she was into mischief.
00:02:56Not naughty, but mischief.
00:02:57That was part of her personality.
00:03:00She had to have a bicycle because of her disabilities.
00:03:12The bike gave April massive independence.
00:03:15She wouldn't have to rely on us to walk, she wouldn't have to wait for us if she got tired
00:03:20to pick her up and carry her or anything like that.
00:03:25The bike was her leg, so she'd go everywhere on this bike, she was never ever without it.
00:03:33She just loved it.
00:03:54I can remember everything about that day.
00:04:01She had swimming lessons.
00:04:04Took her to the pool, I took her in, got her changed, after she'd finished her lesson,
00:04:10changed her and everything like that, she was just skipping out of the changing room.
00:04:14She was very happy.
00:04:15We then drove home.
00:04:21I was going to the local youth club, so I gave her a cuddle and a kiss, said I'll take
00:04:25you in tonight, love you, and she said it back and off she went.
00:04:29I'd tea at her house, went over to her friend's house.
00:04:33That was three of them all together.
00:04:36And then I thought, this is strange, April's not back.
00:04:41Is this an emergency?
00:04:42I just got kidnapped.
00:04:43Can you speak to somebody?
00:04:44She's gone off in a car with somebody.
00:04:45Somebody picked her up in a car or something.
00:04:46OK, what's the name of the child that's gone missing?
00:04:47April Jones.
00:04:48How old is she?
00:04:49Five.
00:04:50When the first call came in, I went to April's house.
00:05:05Obviously there's distress, there's confusion.
00:05:08What we were getting was that April had gone into a car, so time was crucial.
00:05:13A seven-year-old girl tells police she saw what happened.
00:05:17The one witness that we have, April's friend, who was out playing with her at the time,
00:05:23says that April got into the car, happy and smiley, on her own accord.
00:05:33It's possible April knows the driver and the 999 call has been a false alarm, but with
00:05:39no more to go on, police must treat the incident as a potential crime in action.
00:05:46Obviously there was roadblocks put in, the dog handlers were sent out, scenes were trying
00:05:50to be identified.
00:05:54More and more people were being pulled in from all over the force area.
00:05:57You've got people everywhere, walking the pavements, the roads, into the hills, trying
00:06:02to find her.
00:06:03There were police cars everywhere, the search teams were arriving, family, friends.
00:06:10I've never seen so many people, to be honest.
00:06:12People I didn't even know were coming out.
00:06:15An hour passes, and then two hours, but April's still not been found.
00:06:20And I knew then what a massive, massive job this was going to be.
00:06:35By dawn, there's still no news.
00:06:40This morning, they queued around the block, many having had no sleep, waiting to be told
00:06:45where to search.
00:06:47April!
00:06:48April!
00:06:49One of Dovid Powys Police's most senior detectives, Andy John, is brought in to lead the inquiry.
00:07:03From the outset, the priority for myself and the overriding objective was to find April
00:07:08John safe and well, and that is about preserving life.
00:07:15We had a brief description of the vehicle provided by the seven-year-old friend of April,
00:07:20who was a witness at that time.
00:07:22They described it as a small van, small on the front and large at the back.
00:07:28So that could be interpreted as something similar to a Ford Connect van, something like
00:07:33a Land Rover, and also that April got into the driver's side.
00:07:40The significant part of it was that she said that April got into the driver's side.
00:07:45Of course, at the time, that really didn't make a lot of sense.
00:07:49But then, as time wore on, it became apparent that, in actual fact, what she was describing
00:07:55was a left-hand drive vehicle.
00:08:00It's the first clue to the driver's identity.
00:08:06During the morning of the 2nd of October, at about 8 a.m., I had information passed
00:08:11to me through our intelligence cell, to the effect that there was an individual named
00:08:16Mark Bridger who actually had access and owned a vehicle, a Land Rover, which was a left-hand
00:08:21drive.
00:08:22That was a significant step forward in terms of that vehicle potentially being the vehicle
00:08:28that was used to abduct April.
00:08:38Handyman Mark Bridger lives a few miles north of Machynlleth.
00:08:42Immediately, he's designated as a person of interest.
00:08:47He was a 46-year-old man.
00:08:49He lived alone.
00:08:50He had a number of children living within the same community.
00:08:54He knew her.
00:08:55He was a local person.
00:08:57He saw her when we picked her up from school when he was with his girlfriend, picking her
00:09:02kids up.
00:09:04If April knew the driver, this could explain why her friend said she got into the car happy
00:09:09and smiley.
00:09:11And now, other witnesses say they saw Bridger at the estate on Monday evening.
00:09:16As we firmed up on some of the main lines of inquiry, I made a decision to declare Mark
00:09:22Bridger as a suspect in the investigation.
00:09:26Police are immediately sent to arrest him.
00:09:30It was huge.
00:09:33There was a lot of activity going on over in Machynlleth.
00:09:36They find Bridger's house empty, though officers notice something strange.
00:09:41It feels very warm.
00:09:43There is what is described as a roaring fire, the wood burner.
00:09:47There was a distinct smell of detergent, cleaning fluid.
00:09:52The officers from that information felt that something had certainly gone on in that premises.
00:09:58Two hours later, a patrol car spots Bridger walking beside a main road.
00:10:03I started hearing on the radio the coordination of the arrest and the helicopter and everything.
00:10:10He is a local man, they said, who has a vehicle similar to the one apparently involved in
00:10:15the five-year-old's abduction.
00:10:16I remember thinking to myself, wow, that was quick, you know, that was quick.
00:10:21On high alert, a police convoy speeds Bridger to Aberystwyth, 20 miles away.
00:10:29When we had the call that someone had been arrested, we had about a 30-minute notice
00:10:33before he came into custody.
00:10:35When he came in, he was calm, he wasn't shouting or screaming or nothing like that.
00:10:44As I stood at the custody desk, Mark Bridger was brought in and that was quite an unusual moment.
00:10:56I was expecting someone with a bit more emotion, but he was very calm.
00:11:02He was in control, I would say.
00:11:07As Bridger's body is swabbed and his clothes seized, newly found CCTV arrives at the incident room.
00:11:16Filmed by a search helicopter, it shows, by pure chance, Mark Bridger five hours before his arrest.
00:11:25What was interesting, he seemed to be very controlled, very calm in terms of the way he walked.
00:11:30Most people would probably have looked up and taken an interest in seeing a helicopter.
00:11:34That wasn't the case with Mark Bridger.
00:11:36It was just something which did raise alarm bells and supported some of the other information
00:11:41that we were getting to know about the individual.
00:11:44Time is now critical.
00:11:48It's almost 24 hours now from the time that April's gone missing.
00:11:53DC's Louise Thomas and Noel Blakeman are assigned to conduct what's known as an urgent interview.
00:12:01You've got all sorts of thoughts running through your mind.
00:12:04Noel Jones' family were desperate to try and find what has happened.
00:12:08The world's media were outside.
00:12:11I felt immense amount of pressure.
00:12:14These interviews are ultimately fraught with danger.
00:12:18They're conducted without the presence of a solicitor for a very specific purpose.
00:12:24In this case, to find out where April was.
00:12:28Is she still alive? And if she is, where is she?
00:12:31You do not have to say anything and anything you do say may be given in evidence.
00:12:36Yes.
00:12:36Okay.
00:12:37Okay then, Mark.
00:12:39Can you explain to us where April is?
00:12:46I don't know where she is.
00:12:56Suspected of kidnapping five-year-old April Jones,
00:13:00police have arrested a local man, Mark Bridger.
00:13:05The first question is preservation of life.
00:13:07So I said to Mark Bridger, where is she?
00:13:10Where is April Jones?
00:13:13I don't know where she is.
00:13:16Yesterday, I came down to see my daughter's teacher.
00:13:21She had her parents' evening.
00:13:23And I then parked up opposite my girlfriend's house,
00:13:28which I believe is not far away from April's mother and father's house.
00:13:41Stupid.
00:13:42I'd had a few to drink and there was two girls on their bikes.
00:13:47I remember the dark-headed girl came behind the car.
00:13:50I looked to see where the other girl was and I couldn't see this other little girl.
00:13:54And the next minute, the bike was there.
00:14:09Just coming into the Brenegog estate here now on the left-hand side.
00:14:16It's kind of surreal being back here again, especially at night like this.
00:14:21But being back in these circumstances and in these conditions where it's dark, it's night-time.
00:14:33I'd started the car up.
00:14:36As I went to pull away, the car...
00:14:39There wasn't a thud. I can't understand.
00:14:42The car rose up.
00:14:45As I opened the car, I walked round.
00:14:48And underneath the front of the car is now I know to be April.
00:14:57She was only little.
00:14:59So I picked her up and put her across my seat and put her in what is the offside seat, the passenger seat.
00:15:07Tried to take a pulse.
00:15:10And there was nothing.
00:15:11I put my mouth over her mouth and went to blow, put my hand back on the chest.
00:15:15And that's when I realised.
00:15:18The one side of her chest wasn't there.
00:15:20I'd obviously crushed...
00:15:24I'd obviously crushed her little body.
00:15:30So I then drove out of Brenegog.
00:15:33He admits to being present at the time that April is taken.
00:15:38However, his version of events were along the lines of that he has collided with April while she's on her bike.
00:15:45As a result of that collision, April is injured.
00:15:48He tries to administer CPR and drives from the area with April in his vehicle.
00:15:54That was certainly something that I didn't expect to hear.
00:15:57By placing himself at the scene with April,
00:16:00Bridger is making it hard for detectives to tell truth from lies.
00:16:05It's just coming up on my right-hand side here now,
00:16:09the set of garages which is right opposite the row of houses.
00:16:15So that's the abduction site of April Jones,
00:16:20where Mark Bridger said that he'd had his road traffic accident and he'd run her over.
00:16:29Nothing has changed.
00:16:31It's that one street lamp in the corner.
00:16:34It's somewhere that children were playing innocently.
00:16:44So I then drove out of Brenegog.
00:17:05I remember driving down the back road.
00:17:07My intention was to get her medical help.
00:17:10This is the back road that Mark Bridger says that he's driven,
00:17:14which is called Tannerath Road.
00:17:16It's the road leading from the Brenegog estate onto the monument.
00:17:21I ended up at the monument in Lech.
00:17:25So what have you done there then, Mark?
00:17:28I've then gone down by the railway station.
00:17:33I've turned round, I've ended up, I'm at the clock.
00:17:36I've turned round, I've ended up, I'm at the clock.
00:17:39I remember her still being in the car.
00:17:44And that's when I realised...
00:17:49It's OK, Mark.
00:17:50The colour had gone out of her.
00:17:52Her lips were purple.
00:17:55Paul and Coral are friends of mine.
00:17:58And I...
00:18:02I've killed their daughter.
00:18:06It's an appalling admission.
00:18:09He basically said that April had died as a result of this accident.
00:18:13Although he's given a detailed account of April's death,
00:18:17Bridger now appears vague about what happened to her next.
00:18:21We were trying to narrow down exactly when was the last point
00:18:25he remembers seeing April.
00:18:27That was the specific agenda that we needed to cover with him
00:18:31in that urgent interview.
00:18:33So when you've got to the monument...
00:18:35Yes.
00:18:36..is she in the car?
00:18:37I'm trying to jog my memory to know what I've done.
00:18:39It's OK, Mark.
00:18:42The next minute, I'm in my house and she's not there.
00:18:48I've been upstairs and I can't find her.
00:18:54I wouldn't have ditched her.
00:18:57I know that. I wouldn't have... I'd have put her somewhere.
00:19:01Despite the outburst,
00:19:03detectives are beginning to doubt Bridger's sincerity.
00:19:07He would visibly cry.
00:19:11I can't remember what I've done.
00:19:13There was these teardrops that were dropping onto the paper,
00:19:16almost the size of a 10p piece.
00:19:19We need to find her.
00:19:21I don't know where I've put her.
00:19:23And then he'd look up at you and there was nothing,
00:19:26there was no indication that he had been crying at all.
00:19:31I'm going to stop the tape now. It's 18.45.
00:19:34OK.
00:19:37After 27 minutes, the urgent interview ends.
00:19:43As we came out of that interview, we just thought,
00:19:46is Mark Bridger telling the truth?
00:19:48Is April Jones really dead?
00:19:51In reality, at that time, we only had his word for that.
00:19:55We had this version of events with these haphazard locations.
00:20:00And then thereafter, nothing.
00:20:03You have to view that with some suspicion.
00:20:06One thing is known.
00:20:08CCTV from a local petrol station shows Bridger's car leaving town
00:20:13just minutes after April was last seen.
00:20:18It's vital police discover what he did next.
00:20:30MUSIC
00:20:35Desperate to find missing child April Jones,
00:20:39police scale up their media strategy.
00:20:42Thank you very much for coming along to this press conference.
00:20:48With me is Coral Jones, April's mother,
00:20:54and Di Smith, who's April's step-grandad.
00:20:58They're accompanied by their family liaison officer, Hayley Hood.
00:21:04On Wednesday morning, we asked Coral if she'd do a press statement.
00:21:09Coral's been told that Bridger is saying he killed April,
00:21:13but he doesn't know where she is.
00:21:15She'd had some information, life-changing information,
00:21:18shared with her the night before,
00:21:20but, of course, the press weren't aware of that at that time.
00:21:24It's been 36 hours since April was taken from us.
00:21:30There must be someone out there who knows where she is
00:21:35and can help the police find her.
00:21:39We are desperate for any news.
00:21:43April is only five years old.
00:21:46Please, please help find her.
00:21:50It was her little girl, and Coral was still trying to portray some hope.
00:21:56The emotion was horrendous.
00:21:59I did find that extremely emotional, to see her so upset.
00:22:04As I said earlier, we're pursuing a number of lines of inquiry,
00:22:08and Mark Bridger is one of them.
00:22:10As I said earlier, we're pursuing a number of lines of inquiry,
00:22:14and Mark Bridger is one of them.
00:22:21Around Machynlleth, the search for April continues.
00:22:26In Aberystwyth, DC's Louise Thomas and Noel Blakeman
00:22:30prepare to interview Mark Bridger again.
00:22:40He was obviously always sat there.
00:22:42The propriate adult would be sat next to him
00:22:45to facilitate communication,
00:22:47and then you'd have the solicitor in the corner.
00:22:52Obviously, we needed to speak to him again.
00:22:56Tuesday was very much his agenda, his account about what happened.
00:23:01By Wednesday, it was now our agenda.
00:23:04It was our topic areas that we wanted to discuss.
00:23:08Today, detectives want to probe Bridger about his claim
00:23:12that he accidentally ran April over.
00:23:15Can you tell me that when you get out of your vehicle,
00:23:19that you look underneath the vehicle,
00:23:22and you see April?
00:23:25Yes.
00:23:27But a key witness, April's seven-year-old friend,
00:23:30has a different story.
00:23:33She was able to tell us that, in fact,
00:23:36she was able to tell us that April had gone into the car
00:23:39happy and smiling,
00:23:41not the running over and killing her in a car accident
00:23:45how he described.
00:23:48We have a witness that was present.
00:23:52This person says...
00:23:55..April got into the Land Rover
00:24:00via the driver's door,
00:24:03which, on a normal car, would be the right-hand side,
00:24:07but that's really the passenger's side door on your car.
00:24:10That is complete fabrication and lies.
00:24:14It can't have happened.
00:24:17He is getting angry, but also trying not to show that anger physically,
00:24:22but it's in his voice, he's getting angry.
00:24:25That was the time for me that I realised
00:24:28how large and how big Mark Bridger was,
00:24:33and how dominating he would have been with April.
00:24:38Mark, is it a case that what you're telling us
00:24:43didn't quite happen?
00:24:45It happened exactly the way I tell you.
00:24:48That person is lying.
00:24:53I did not abduct April.
00:24:57I'd like you to go away and do the tests from the car.
00:25:03That's just around you. Oh, thank you.
00:25:07Police turn to forensics to see if the evidence can decide.
00:25:13Did Mark Bridger run April over with the front of his car?
00:25:19Or did she climb into the passenger seat, happy and smiling,
00:25:23as the child witness claims?
00:25:25This is Mark Bridger's Land Rover.
00:25:28I first saw it the day after he was arrested,
00:25:32and I haven't seen it since then.
00:25:35There was two girls on the bikes.
00:25:38There was no thud, there was no knock,
00:25:41and the vehicle then rose up.
00:25:44I removed the bumper because I was concerned
00:25:47about the damage to the car,
00:25:49and I didn't want to get into trouble.
00:25:52I removed the bumper because I was concerned
00:25:55about the damage here.
00:25:57It appeared to be broken, but that was not recent damage.
00:26:02She was limp and felt lifeless.
00:26:07I'd obviously crushed her little body.
00:26:14If a small child had been hit by one of these vehicles,
00:26:18it would have caused a lot of injuries.
00:26:22Skin, DNA, even transfer of fibres from April's clothing.
00:26:29And there was absolutely nothing.
00:26:32Basically, his story wasn't true.
00:26:34He'd made it up.
00:26:36If he'd made that up, what else did he make up?
00:26:40With no obvious evidence of April's death,
00:26:43police can't discount the possibility that she may still be alive.
00:26:47I still was keeping an open mind at that point,
00:26:50in terms of, are we still hopefully going to be finding April,
00:26:54safe and well, in a hideout or at some location?
00:26:59The inquiry team's lead search adviser is Gareth Thomas.
00:27:03He's now told to step up the search.
00:27:07Whilst there was a chance that April was alive,
00:27:10all the stops were pulled out.
00:27:13It has been quoted as the largest search in British police history.
00:27:18Mountain Rescue have reported that it was their largest search since Lockerbie.
00:27:23Our colleagues from Urban Search and Rescue and the cave rescue teams,
00:27:27Coast Guard are in the line.
00:27:30And when you put all those together with the public,
00:27:33it was massive, absolutely massive.
00:27:37The area close to Mark Bridger's house is given special attention.
00:27:43This is the river just behind Bridger's house.
00:27:46Rivers are really notoriously difficult to search
00:27:49because everything's moving, very, very dynamic.
00:27:52And on three separate occasions,
00:27:55this river was finger-tipped by police divers,
00:27:58also by the police.
00:28:00It's a very, very dangerous river.
00:28:03This river was finger-tipped by police divers,
00:28:06also professional volunteers such as Mountain Rescue, fire service.
00:28:10About 5km downstream turns into a tidal estuary.
00:28:14So there are many, many difficult areas
00:28:17to have any sort of a high level of confidence
00:28:20in knowing that April wasn't there.
00:28:23It was very, very difficult.
00:28:28With search teams desperate for a lead,
00:28:32our viewers try a new strategy to unlock Bridger's memory.
00:28:37During the interview, we gave him maps,
00:28:40even placed on the walls all around him,
00:28:43to try and get him to sort of visualise certain areas.
00:28:46We were encouraging him to look at them,
00:28:49getting him to focus on where possibly that he may have put April.
00:28:54You mentioned earlier about hiding her from the rain.
00:28:58I wouldn't have buried her.
00:29:00I would have covered her or put her somewhere under shelter.
00:29:03Are there locations that are personal and private to you
00:29:07that you would have laid April?
00:29:10There's a cycle track just above my house.
00:29:14But I most certainly don't recollect being up there.
00:29:21Despite the new strategy,
00:29:23Bridger still can't or won't reveal April's whereabouts.
00:29:28It was hugely frustrating.
00:29:30We were desperately trying to work with each other
00:29:33and trying to find ways of,
00:29:35how are we going to get this information from Mark Bridger?
00:29:38There was pressure on us.
00:29:40We're not getting past that block about what happened after
00:29:44she had died in the car.
00:29:46Andy John needs answers.
00:29:48He calls in one of Britain's leading experts on the criminal mind.
00:29:53This is the first time he's spoken about the case.
00:29:56I first became aware of April Jones's disappearance
00:30:00on the day after the abduction had taken place.
00:30:05I'd heard about Joe Sylvan.
00:30:07I knew he'd worked with Madeleine McCann,
00:30:09but in particular the Sowa murders.
00:30:12My role is to give officers insight
00:30:15into how offenders of this nature think
00:30:18and how they process information
00:30:21and how they respond to certain types of questions.
00:30:26Using his expertise,
00:30:28Dr Sullivan now creates a psychological profile of Bridger.
00:30:33One of the first things that I wanted to do
00:30:36was to see where Mark Bridger lived.
00:30:38As you walked into the front room,
00:30:41there was a shotgun above the fireplace.
00:30:44There were replica handguns
00:30:46and two pairs of handcuffs that were very openly displayed.
00:30:51He had a background in working in an abattoir.
00:30:56He had a number of knives that were in the property.
00:31:01He also had quite a number of books about SAS survival techniques
00:31:05and living in the wild,
00:31:07creating this impression of himself as some sort of Rambo-type character
00:31:11that suggested that perhaps he was a fantasist,
00:31:14someone living in a world that he'd created in his own mind.
00:31:19Back at the station, Dr Sullivan briefs the team on his early findings.
00:31:24Just as they prepare for the last interview of the day.
00:31:28So, Joe Sullivan was already piecing together
00:31:31the psychological profile of Mark Bridger.
00:31:34He told us appealing to his paternal side
00:31:37possibly wasn't a good idea,
00:31:40but we decided to go against that, really, and just give it a go.
00:31:45We had nothing to lose.
00:31:54The time on my watch is 2200 hours.
00:31:58This is going to be the final interview for tonight.
00:32:01Yes.
00:32:03It's been a tough day.
00:32:05OK?
00:32:08Obviously, she hasn't been found yet.
00:32:13No, she hasn't been found.
00:32:15We need to bring her home.
00:32:18I know.
00:32:20I know.
00:32:21If I really, honestly knew where she was,
00:32:25I would tell you.
00:32:28We've only got your version of events.
00:32:31We've only got your word to say that you run her over
00:32:35and that you've killed her.
00:32:37I can promise you that she's not alive.
00:32:40I can't change my story. It's what happened that night.
00:32:43Mark, we don't want her to suffer any more.
00:32:49He's a father. He's got six children.
00:32:52You know, he wouldn't want this to happen to his child.
00:32:55I was trying to plead with him, really.
00:32:57You're a parent. Yes.
00:33:01You've got a daughter. Yes.
00:33:04Let's think about April's mum and dad.
00:33:07Put yourself in their shoes.
00:33:10I'd have done. OK?
00:33:12For hours and hours sat in the cell.
00:33:14I really, really thought perhaps, yes,
00:33:17this would be the turning point.
00:33:19It doesn't matter what time of the night it is, Mark.
00:33:22I will ring the bell. Ring the bell.
00:33:24We'll speak to you and we will sort it.
00:33:27I want it sorted.
00:33:29Mark Bridger has a story and he's sticking to it.
00:33:33If police are to find April, they need a breakthrough.
00:33:37I promise I will do everything.
00:33:44We moved into Brinigog in the March of 2007.
00:33:49April was born, I think, maybe a week or two later.
00:33:54She was premature, seven weeks.
00:33:57She wanted to come out in this world at a young age.
00:34:01April had mild cerebral palsy.
00:34:04She was in a wheelchair.
00:34:06She was in a wheelchair.
00:34:08She was in a wheelchair.
00:34:10She was in a wheelchair.
00:34:12She had mild cerebral palsy.
00:34:14She was so, so tiny.
00:34:17We didn't know if she'd make it.
00:34:19It was a really, really rough start to her life.
00:34:22By 2012, April was living a happy life with Mum Coral,
00:34:27Dad Paul and her siblings, Harley and Jasmine.
00:34:31The happy memories will always be there.
00:34:35Aberderby, we used to go to a lot.
00:34:38We used to go there for days out.
00:34:42She loved going to the beach and swimming in the sea.
00:34:45She was just outgoing, bubbly, like her brothers and sisters were.
00:34:49But she ruled the roost.
00:35:03Two and a half days since going missing,
00:35:0644 police forces are now desperately trying to find April.
00:35:12We turned on the TV and we saw David Cameron doing a speech.
00:35:17Well, my heart just goes out to April's family.
00:35:20And this is every family's nightmare, clearly, having this happen to you.
00:35:24And the fact that she suffers cerebral palsy,
00:35:27something I know a little about from my own children, only makes this worse.
00:35:31I'd never thought I'd hear a Prime Minister told about me and my family at all.
00:35:36My appeal would be, if you know anything,
00:35:39if you saw anything, heard anything,
00:35:41have any ideas you can bring forward, talk to the police,
00:35:44help this family find their lovely child.
00:35:47I was so shocked.
00:35:49But so pleased that he had said something about her.
00:35:57Five miles north of where the abduction happened,
00:36:00forensic teams are examining Bridger's house.
00:36:04The focus for the house was to look for anything
00:36:08that could indicate April had been present.
00:36:12I asked for things like drinking vessels to be looked at.
00:36:16Had he provided April with any food?
00:36:20And then to also look for any bloodstaining, any items of clothing.
00:36:30When they did this in the bathroom,
00:36:33they did locate some tiny spots of blood on the bathroom wall.
00:36:38This was fed back to me.
00:36:41We don't know the source of those spots.
00:36:44They could be anybody's.
00:36:46And we just need to see if it matches April or not.
00:36:50Samples are rushed to the lab.
00:36:53The results won't be in for 24 hours.
00:36:58Meanwhile, in Aberystwyth,
00:37:00the questioning of Mark Bridger enters its third day.
00:37:04The investigation team will be interviewing Mark Bridger again today.
00:37:11And we will continue to piece together his movements
00:37:16during the relevant times
00:37:19and looking to overlay his account with that that we've gleaned from witnesses.
00:37:26One witness reports seeing Bridger the morning after the abduction,
00:37:31close to the river near his home.
00:37:33That witness will say that they saw Bridger walking to his car.
00:37:37Describes what appeared to be carrying a plastic black bag, like a bin liner.
00:37:42What was he doing there, you know, just a mile away from his home address?
00:37:46Coming out of the undergrowth.
00:37:48So the theory is that he's either gone to recover something
00:37:52or he'd gone to place something there.
00:37:54The lay-by is excavated, but nothing is found.
00:37:59With no body and Bridger sticking firmly to his story,
00:38:03it's a frustrating time for the detectives.
00:38:06Just have a look at that. Yes.
00:38:08And think, where is April?
00:38:11I really don't know.
00:38:13I can remember going into the canteen and overhearing conversations
00:38:16about, why can't they get him to tell us where she was?
00:38:19And, you know, in my mind, I'm trying, I'm really trying
00:38:22to get this information out, but it's just not happening.
00:38:25Just to remind you, Mark, that the red light is on.
00:38:28Obviously, as we explained, this interview is being monitored.
00:38:31Yes. OK?
00:38:32Bridger's refusal to give up April
00:38:35now hints at a new and ominous side to his personality.
00:38:40Joe Sullivan sat us down.
00:38:42He gave a PowerPoint presentation for about 20 minutes
00:38:46of how to identify and understand a psychopath.
00:38:50I told him that I believed that Mark Bridger
00:38:53probably had quite a number of psychopathic traits.
00:38:56He was unlikely to experience an enormous amount of empathy
00:39:00or have any major sense of guilt about what he had done.
00:39:04Of course, he will inevitably try to present himself
00:39:07as someone who does have those characteristics,
00:39:10but the sense that I had from the information
00:39:13we had gathered even at that time was that
00:39:16this is a man who is not going to respond
00:39:20to an appeal to his better nature.
00:39:25The profile suggests Bridger won't confess,
00:39:28so police must instead find inconsistencies in his story.
00:39:34The main focus, I think, for Joe Sullivan
00:39:36and the main focus for everybody in the investigation
00:39:39was to keep Mark Bridger talking.
00:39:41The moment that Mark Bridger stops talking,
00:39:44we will not be able to go any further with the investigation.
00:39:47We will not get any more information out of him.
00:39:51April went missing on Monday evening.
00:39:54Now, on Thursday, Andy John instructs the interviewing team.
00:40:01Before we start this part of the interview,
00:40:04I do need to further arrest you, Mark, OK?
00:40:07All right.
00:40:08On suspicion of murder of April Jones
00:40:11on 1st October 2012.
00:40:14The shock, the physical shock of his body.
00:40:17He was now white, he was pale,
00:40:20simply because he thought we had found her.
00:40:23I can remember him turning to his solicitor,
00:40:26looking at, like, hey, is this something you haven't told me yet?
00:40:29There's another significant development.
00:40:32Detectives have found indecent images on Mark Bridger's laptop.
00:40:38And I do have to further arrest you
00:40:42on suspicion of child pornography.
00:40:45You're under caution, OK?
00:40:47Yes.
00:40:49There's now a possible sexual motive for the abduction.
00:40:53But crucially, after three days,
00:40:56police have also given up hope of finding April alive.
00:41:01It's a turning point in the investigation,
00:41:04and the family need to be told.
00:41:07We had an agreement with Coral and her husband, Paul,
00:41:10that we would always tell them the truth.
00:41:19They've got a place for us to go away from the press,
00:41:22so we didn't have to have the press around us all the time.
00:41:25And there's little offices just up the road from where we live,
00:41:29and we called it our sanctuary place.
00:41:32Here you are, then, Coral.
00:41:34Where are you?
00:41:38The day that the status of the arrest of Mark Bridger changed,
00:41:43we went to pick up Paul and Coral to bring them to the sanctuary
00:41:47and shared the information, and it was just life-changing.
00:41:52It was dreadful.
00:41:56To get told...
00:41:59To get told.
00:42:03It's not an abduction case any more, it's a murder.
00:42:08And...
00:42:13And you've got to tell your children.
00:42:18They've lost a baby sister.
00:42:29You're getting told that your daughter's dead,
00:42:33but they don't know where she is.
00:42:35And that was the hardest thing.
00:42:59I briefly remember the volunteers
00:43:02have been called back from searching.
00:43:06It was just to be left to the professionals.
00:43:09It is no longer appropriate for us to expect untrained members
00:43:13of the public to continue the search.
00:43:16They didn't want them to come across the body.
00:43:19And I sort of remember...
00:43:21..people crying and...
00:43:24..complete strangers, just in tears.
00:43:28I think the fact that that status had been changed,
00:43:31that there was no hope, really, that April was going to be found alive,
00:43:35which was life-changing for Paul and Coral
00:43:38and for Jasmine and Harley as well.
00:43:41Police are now sure that Mark Bridger has murdered April.
00:43:46But after two days of intense interviews,
00:43:49there's still not enough evidence.
00:43:53There was this façade that he was actually trying to help us out,
00:43:57but in reality wasn't actually giving us an awful lot.
00:44:02It was an evening or a night shift
00:44:05when he asked for a water and survey map of the area,
00:44:08so he could jog his memory.
00:44:11We'd be checking on him every 15, 30 minutes in his cell,
00:44:14and he'd be lying on the floor just studying the map.
00:44:17But he never came up with anything to say,
00:44:20I've no doubt that while he's pawing over the maps
00:44:23and making it look like he is trying to remember
00:44:26the location of April's body,
00:44:29what he's actually doing in his head
00:44:32is trying to second-guess where the interviews are going next,
00:44:35of what are the sorts of things that he needs to address
00:44:38and how he needs to go about it.
00:44:41He's trying to figure out what's going on,
00:44:44what's going on in his head,
00:44:47what is it that he needs to address
00:44:50and how he needs to present himself.
00:44:53This is an individual who's very much in survival mode.
00:44:59Nothing. It was just another game he was playing with us.
00:45:04It was all one big game to him.
00:45:08As days went by, we had less and less hope from the interview,
00:45:11so we expanded the search.
00:45:15By Friday, police have identified over 600 search areas.
00:45:30Everything that we've found so far,
00:45:33we've been able to trace it.
00:45:36Everything you can see here is part of the search area.
00:45:39This was a real, real key area for us.
00:45:42And as you can see, it's heavily sided,
00:45:45steep, wooded valleys, very, very difficult terrain.
00:45:51A lot of these areas are only accessible
00:45:54by officers on ropes,
00:45:57working really, really carefully.
00:46:00And it's not just what you can see above the ground.
00:46:03There's the subterranean element as well.
00:46:06A lot of caves, heavily mined.
00:46:09But you can just see from this high point here,
00:46:12a massive, massive search effort.
00:46:16April was a five-year-old, but she was a very, very small five-year-old.
00:46:19So one thing we had to consider,
00:46:22if he was going to conceal a body,
00:46:25that because of April's size,
00:46:28she'd be quite easy to conceal, quite easy to carry,
00:46:32at a significant distance from a parked vehicle.
00:46:35He always told everybody he was in the special services,
00:46:38which has proved not to be the case.
00:46:41But he was certainly comfortable in the outdoors.
00:46:44We were told that he worked for the Forestry Commission,
00:46:47he'd worked as a lifeguard, he worked in an abattoir.
00:46:50So when we were looking for deposition sites or areas
00:46:53that he may have got rid of April's body,
00:46:56there was a lot of factors to consider.
00:46:59Forensics have found no evidence to support Bridger's story
00:47:02that he ran April over.
00:47:05She was laid there, on the seat.
00:47:08And that's when I realised one side of her chest wasn't there.
00:47:13Forensics have also examined the car's interior.
00:47:16Now, police will confront Bridger with the findings.
00:47:22Our forensics guys have examined the vehicle.
00:47:25Agreed.
00:47:28There is no trace of any blood, there is no trace of any hair,
00:47:31no trace of any skin.
00:47:34Mark Bridger was relying on the fact that he'd run over April.
00:47:38There's this accident, he's done this,
00:47:41he then picks her up,
00:47:44puts her into the car and then drives away.
00:47:47You'd expect to find blood from the injury.
00:47:52Yet the scientists are turning around saying,
00:47:56we haven't found anything.
00:47:59There is no indication whatsoever
00:48:02of anybody underneath that vehicle.
00:48:05That is obviously very, very strange
00:48:08because if I ever abducted her,
00:48:11there would be some sort of hair and fingerprints and things.
00:48:14There's nothing there, forensically,
00:48:17to corroborate your account.
00:48:20And this is an opportunity for you to try and help us.
00:48:23Let's move to the inside then, the interior.
00:48:26And again, I'm being told that there is no forensic evidence.
00:48:29No hair?
00:48:32No hair, no blood, no nothing.
00:48:35There's no blood?
00:48:38I didn't feel any blood at that time anyway.
00:48:41There was nothing visible?
00:48:44There was nothing visible, there was no traces of blood on me or her at that time.
00:48:47There we are, that's fine, thank you very much.
00:48:51Nobody has seen this accident happen
00:48:54and the only person that's saying that there was an accident was him.
00:49:06Interviewed on suspicion of murdering April Jones,
00:49:09Mark Bridger claims he tried to save the five-year-old
00:49:12after injuring her in a car accident.
00:49:15He also insists there was no blood on either him or her.
00:49:21Yet blood has now been found,
00:49:24not in Bridger's car, but in his house.
00:49:27So around about quarter past six on the Friday evening,
00:49:30I received an email from the lab
00:49:33with the results of the blood spots from the bathroom wall.
00:49:39These two areas of apparent blood spatter
00:49:42on the bathroom wall
00:49:45we compared to the DNA that we'd obtained
00:49:48from April Jones's toothbrush
00:49:51and it gave a match.
00:49:54Something obviously has happened at the home address of Mark Bridger.
00:49:59And there's more fresh evidence.
00:50:04They found a tiny bit of blood
00:50:07on the inside collar of Bridger's fleece
00:50:10and there was also DNA present
00:50:13from April on the inside of his jogging bottoms.
00:50:18This is definitely a significant point
00:50:21in the investigation.
00:50:24We've now got a definite link between April
00:50:27and the scene of Mark Bridger's home address.
00:50:35On the second day of having the sanctuary,
00:50:38Andy John came up and had to tell the parents
00:50:41that April's blood had been identified in Bridger's house.
00:50:44I can't begin to imagine what it is like
00:50:47to have lost a child in such horrific circumstances
00:50:50and the pain that the family would have suffered at the time.
00:50:56I do find the hardest time was telling Harley
00:50:59that he was on my bed.
00:51:04Like we normally are.
00:51:07Because he wouldn't go to bed until midnight at the time.
00:51:11And I had to tell him...
00:51:17..that his sister's not coming home.
00:51:22She's murdered.
00:51:25The scream...
00:51:28..still to date haunts me.
00:51:33Somebody comes along like him
00:51:36and takes their little sister away.
00:51:39It's, well...
00:51:42There's nothing to say about that, can you, really?
00:51:45Apart from what I want to do to him.
00:52:00I remember wanting to go home and hug my two kids closely
00:52:04and be very thankful for what I had at home.
00:52:07I think it makes you put things into perspective
00:52:10and realise what is important and what isn't important.
00:52:19The discovery of April's blood is a major breakthrough.
00:52:22But the case is about to enter still darker territory.
00:52:28Bridger's laptop has now been fully examined.
00:52:32Police hope its contents will find a way
00:52:36to force Bridger to reveal the truth.
00:52:40Friday was the main day that we had to challenge him
00:52:43on all the sexually explicit material
00:52:46that was recovered from his computer.
00:52:49It was a tough day. Myself and other experienced officers,
00:52:52we'd seen, you know, child images before.
00:52:55We've had to interview child sex offenders before.
00:52:58What I want to do is just start going through
00:53:01some of the images that we've recovered.
00:53:04Right, OK.
00:53:06They're difficult interviews to conduct
00:53:09because we're going to talk about graphic,
00:53:12pornographic images of children.
00:53:16It's not a nice subject at all, on any level.
00:53:20Tell me what you see there.
00:53:23It looks like the four stages of development of breasts.
00:53:26How does that make you feel?
00:53:28It doesn't make me feel sexual at all.
00:53:31Right, the next image. What do you see there?
00:53:34Right, obviously this is a young girl,
00:53:37could be between eight and 12.
00:53:40There's nothing sexual about that to me at all.
00:53:44He had a very clear strategy to distance himself
00:53:47from any form of sexual arousal
00:53:50to the images that he had on his computer.
00:53:53Because, of course, in his fantasy world,
00:53:56the Rambo-esque character that he sees himself as,
00:54:00there's no room for him being sexually interested in children.
00:54:04Bridger has shown more images found on his laptop,
00:54:07some depicting violence and the sexual assault of children.
00:54:12What I'm going to do now is turn over to the next image.
00:54:15It's image three, brackets 15, JPEG.
00:54:18What's going on there?
00:54:20There was also material within the computer of Mark Bridger
00:54:23having searched websites relating to child murders
00:54:26and other most horrific incidents.
00:54:29Do you remember searching for that? No.
00:54:32That had been typed into the Google search engine.
00:54:35I don't remember typing that in, no. I don't.
00:54:38This was somebody who was sexually interested in children.
00:54:41This was somebody who probably had a long-standing
00:54:44sexual interest in children.
00:54:46I will conclude this interview now.
00:54:48After almost four hours, the interview ends.
00:54:52The case itself is starting to look like
00:54:55a sexually motivated child murder.
00:54:59Police believe they have a motive, but still there's no body.
00:55:04And there's now only a few hours before Bridger's custody clock runs out.
00:55:09I was very aware of the fact that we had potentially
00:55:12a maximum of 96 hours in which we could investigate
00:55:15the matters whilst Mark Bridger was in custody.
00:55:18The significance of the custody clock is that when it reaches zero,
00:55:24you have to either have charged the suspect
00:55:28or he walks out of the police station.
00:55:32We're on day four, five now.
00:55:35We need to either get him charged or he's going to be released.
00:55:50Mark Bridger has now been in custody
00:55:53for three and a half days.
00:55:55If he's not charged within the next few hours,
00:55:58he could walk free.
00:56:01I can vividly remember how anxious Coral was.
00:56:05She was frightened that he wasn't going to be charged,
00:56:08because if he wasn't charged, as we kept telling her,
00:56:11the law said he had to be released.
00:56:13The decision whether or not to charge Mark Bridger
00:56:16will be made by the Crown Prosecution Service.
00:56:19But first, they must wait for one last interview.
00:56:23Hoping that DC's Louise Thomas and Noel Blakeman
00:56:26can finally crack their suspect.
00:56:30You can tell me where she is, but you won't.
00:56:35You know where the body is. You know where she is.
00:56:40Did you intend to murder her? No.
00:56:43This last interview really is the last throw at the dice.
00:56:46It's what we call the challenge, and it's a summary, really,
00:56:49of everything that we've gone through for that week.
00:56:52And it's a challenge of all the inconsistencies
00:56:54that we were able to put to him.
00:56:56I mean, ultimately, our case stood on
00:56:59Mark Bridger's word against a child witness.
00:57:02And she was able to tell us that April Jones
00:57:05got into that car willingly.
00:57:07There was no evidence of a road traffic accident.
00:57:11There was no blood or anything of that of April Jones
00:57:14in the vehicle or outside the vehicle.
00:57:17And we had April Jones' DNA on certain garments
00:57:20he'd been wearing.
00:57:22Forensic tests have also proved
00:57:24the blood found in the house is April's.
00:57:27It's gold dust.
00:57:29We've got blood in his bathroom from April.
00:57:36Blood has been found on the wall of the bathroom at your house.
00:57:39Right.
00:57:40And this blood gives a full DNA profile of April Jones.
00:57:46The only explanation I've got is obviously
00:57:50I've got blood on my hands.
00:57:52If I haven't dried my hands, you flick your hands,
00:57:54I've gone for a wee.
00:57:56Within seconds, he goes,
00:57:58that must have been when I was drying my hands.
00:58:02I just dried my hands like this.
00:58:05He was quite animated in how he was recreating
00:58:09the washing of the hands and the possibility of flicking.
00:58:14So it's possibly a transfer of blood from
00:58:17having some sort of blood on my hands.
00:58:21But there was no blood in the car.
00:58:25You said you didn't find any visible blood on you or anything.
00:58:29I must have been mistaken.
00:58:31Clearly there was, was his response.
00:58:33Faced with damning evidence, still Bridger refuses to flinch.
00:58:38Obviously there was only a very minute amount of blood,
00:58:41which I've said from the beginning,
00:58:43but I never ever recalled having blood from the injury
00:58:47or from April's body on me.
00:58:49May I stop you there?
00:58:51Yes, sorry, yes.
00:58:53The question I have to ask, is that blood there
00:58:55because April was assaulted in the bathroom?
00:58:58Not at all. Not that I recollect at all, no.
00:59:02DC Blakeman now moves on to the evidence
00:59:05found on Mark Bridger's laptop.
00:59:08We were obviously concerned that you have
00:59:12a sexual interest in children.
00:59:15I haven't got an interest in children.
00:59:19We knew that we had found child pornography on his computers
00:59:22and we knew that he'd been viewing them moments and days
00:59:26leading up to what had happened to April Jones.
00:59:29And you viewed all these photos within minutes of each other.
00:59:33Were you masturbating to these photographs?
00:59:35No.
00:59:36Is this a build-up? Is this what was happening that morning?
00:59:39A build-up of sexual frustration, maybe?
00:59:41Why hasn't it built up before then?
00:59:43Maybe the opportunity hasn't arisen.
00:59:46Or maybe it's just shit.
00:59:49He did not like to be depicted as a paedophile
00:59:53and somebody that was looking at images
00:59:55for sexual gratification of children.
00:59:57That's when it became argumentative.
00:59:59That's when we saw the real Mark Bridger.
01:00:02Explain to me how and why you sexually assaulted April.
01:00:07I did not sexually assault April.
01:00:10There was no sexual assault on April.
01:00:13Did you suffocate her?
01:00:14No.
01:00:15Did you use a sharp weapon?
01:00:17No.
01:00:18All my knives can be checked.
01:00:20All of the evidence we have suggests that you have abducted
01:00:24and murdered April with a sexual motive.
01:00:28Therefore, the reason that you're not telling us where her body is
01:00:32is because the discovery of her body
01:00:35would provide the evidence of this.
01:00:38Is this not the case?
01:00:40This is not the case, Tom.
01:00:42I have stuck by my story and I still stick by my story
01:00:45that April's body was crushed under my wheel of my car.
01:00:49Unless there's anything else that you want to say,
01:00:52I'm going to conclude this interview now.
01:00:54All I want to say to Paul and Carl
01:00:58that I'm sorry for what happened
01:01:02and that if I in my heart of hearts knew
01:01:06where she was, I would tell you.
01:01:09As the interview ends, police are already in final negotiations
01:01:14with the Crown Prosecution Service.
01:01:19And just over an hour after that,
01:01:21we were charging him with the murder of April Jones.
01:01:33I charged him with three counts,
01:01:35one for murder, one for child abduction
01:01:38and one for perverting the course of justice.
01:01:44There was no emotion.
01:01:46No emotion whatsoever coming from Mark Ruger.
01:01:54He was charged with the murder and abduction of April Jones.
01:02:02I was just pleased. I was so happy I cried.
01:02:08He presented himself to the next available court,
01:02:10which was on the following Monday.
01:02:14It's seven days since April went missing.
01:02:19People were throwing cans and all sorts up the van at him.
01:02:28And people were going mad.
01:02:31And that's people I didn't even know
01:02:34were outraged by him for what he's done.
01:03:08HE SIGHS
01:03:31I don't think anybody could have prepared us really
01:03:34for the reaction that we had
01:03:36when the guilty verdict came in.
01:03:40It was the best news I ever had.
01:03:43It was so overwhelming
01:03:46that he's never coming out.
01:03:48You can't hurt no more children.
01:03:50In court, Bridger again claimed
01:03:53that April had died in a terrible accident.
01:03:57Instead, the evidence showed him to be a premeditated killer
01:04:01and paedophile who'd been on the prowl for a young girl.
01:04:06There may be sadistic elements to his personality
01:04:09whereby he enjoys the distress that he causes to others.
01:04:14He probably was someone who had fantasised
01:04:17about abducting and murdering a child.
01:04:19He certainly was primed and ready for that opportunity
01:04:22and that was something he visualised in his head
01:04:25and something that he wanted to happen.
01:04:32I believe that April was taken by Mark Bridger
01:04:35to his home address and there April
01:04:38may well have been subjected to sexual acts
01:04:41and then subsequently suffered significant harm
01:04:44which led to her death.
01:04:46I believe that parts of April may have been disposed of
01:04:49in the wood burner and elsewhere within the Machynlleth area.
01:05:00I don't know where April is.
01:05:02I wish I did.
01:05:05I know they had a funeral for her
01:05:08with the fragments from the fire
01:05:11but they didn't have her and for me
01:05:14I just wish that he would come forward
01:05:17and give that information
01:05:20because it must be heartbreaking for them
01:05:23not knowing what's happened to their little girl.
01:05:28You think about April every day.
01:05:31It's never thought that she's gone.
01:05:35You never not think about her.
01:05:39You could just be doing the most simplest of things.
01:05:42You sat watching TV and you'd be like, oh yeah, she's like this
01:05:45or you see kids playing out and like, oh yeah, April, she'll be that age.
01:05:49She's always on your mind. She's just there.
01:05:55For us, I suppose there's unfinished business, isn't there?
01:06:00There was no body, despite searching.
01:06:04We had not located her.
01:06:07We didn't, as interviewers.
01:06:10We haven't got him to say where she was.
01:06:14I have been told that a lot feel guilty
01:06:17because they've never found April.
01:06:20They've got nothing to feel guilty about.
01:06:23We've got him behind bars and I'm thankful for what they've done.
01:06:26We haven't got April. That is sad.
01:06:29I don't remember the sad days.
01:06:32I just want to remember the happy-go-lucky little April she was.
01:06:44They are the everyday heroes on the front line of our current crisis.
01:06:48The Casualty 24-7 team are back
01:06:51just when we need them most, new tomorrow at 9.
01:06:54Next, another child murder that brought the nation to tears.
01:06:57James Bulger, The New Revelations, is next.
