00:00Alien Romulus is currently terrifying moviegoers nationwide, but one scene in particular was
00:05too scary for even the cast to sit through it.
00:08Now that the movie's finally out in theaters, we've got some clues as to which scene it
00:12was.
00:13Back in February 2024, before fans had even gotten a teaser trailer peek at director Fede
00:17Alvarez's new take on the Alien franchise, star Isabella Merced offered some tantalizing
00:22clues about what Alien Romulus might show viewers.
00:25While promoting Madame Web in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Merced emphasized
00:29that a scene in the new Alien film was so gruesome the entire cast struggled to get
00:34through watching it.
00:35She said,
00:36"'There's a scene that I'm in, and they all had to turn away.
00:38Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting.
00:41I was so excited.'"
00:43And while Merced didn't specify which scene in particular won the Grossest Scene Award
00:48from the cast, her excitement at being featured in it gives us some leads.
00:51There are two scenes in Alien Romulus that Merced appears in and are nasty enough to
00:55be the moment she alluded to.
00:57The first scene takes place fairly early on in the film, as Merced's character Kay,
01:01Bjorn, and Navarro attempt to escape from the Romulus and Remus spacecraft.
01:05Unfortunately, Navarro's already been attacked by a facehugger, and unbeknownst to the crew
01:10of the Korbelin, she's been implanted by a baby xenomorph.
01:13In a horrifying sequence, Navarro uses a handheld X-ray to actually see the baby alien start
01:19to burst its way through her body just before it actually does.
01:22Merced's Kay is forced to watch as the pilot's body splits open, and the familiar baby alien
01:27bursts out just like in the original film.
01:30But while that scene certainly has the grossed-out potential to have put off the cast, its similarity
01:34to one of the most iconic scenes in the Alien franchise makes us think that it's actually
01:38a later scene that really horrified everyone involved with this sequel.
01:42After getting terribly wounded earlier in the film by a full-grown xenomorph, Kay manages
01:46to crawl her way back to the Korbelin in the hopes of activating a cryopod to keep her
01:51and her unborn baby in stasis long enough to seek medical attention.
01:55Unfortunately, Kay makes a disastrous decision to inject herself with a vial of experimental
01:59goo meant to turn humans into the ultimate lifeform in a last-ditch effort to keep herself
02:04alive.
02:05And while the goo, last seen in Prometheus and Alien Covenant, does keep Kay alive and
02:09well long enough for the surviving crew members to join her on the Korbelin, it has a disturbing
02:13effect on her pregnancy.
02:15After getting put in a cryopod by Rain and Andy, Kay starts to give birth.
02:19But instead of a healthy human baby, what comes out looks more like a cross between
02:23the classic xenomorph and the Engineers seen in Scott's prequel series.
02:27The creature, called the Offspring in the credits of the film, quickly incapacitates
02:31Andy and corners Kay in order to suck all the strange goo oozing out of her body.
02:35By the time Rain stumbles onto the scene, Kay is dead, and she's left alone to deal
02:39with one of the scariest alien hybrids we've seen in the entire franchise.
02:44Speaking to Variety about the creature, Alvarez mentioned that his goal was to pay homage
02:48to past installments while still injecting something new into the franchise.
02:52He said,
02:53"[The new issue is the root of the whole thing that was introduced in Prometheus.
02:56It's the root of all life.
02:57But also, particularly, the xenomorphs come out of that thing, which means it has to be
03:01inside them.
03:02It's probably a new species, because that mix never happened before."
03:06Whether it's a new creature or not, it's certainly a new spin on the classic alien design, and
03:15one that's been disturbing viewers since the film's premiere.
03:17And while Merced hasn't circled back since the film's premiere to confirm that this is
03:21the scene in question, that's where we're putting our money.
03:24You can see if you've got a stronger stomach than the Alien Romulus cast for yourself by
03:28checking out the film in theaters now.
