Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S06E09 (19th August 2024)
Transcript
00:00In Newcastle, PC Mary-Anne Hutchison is making life sweet for a stranded family.
00:18Where have you been today?
00:20Literally just to pick up a cake.
00:22Oh, what kind of cake?
00:24A birthday cake up behind you.
00:26Oh, let's have a look.
00:28Oh, that's excellent.
00:30These cards aren't even what I want.
00:32Oh, no, I've got to make sure your broken car gets fixed.
00:34Oh, thank you.
00:36Yeah, that's everywhere safe, so that's my priority.
00:40It's a lovely cake, actually. I'm quite jealous.
00:43It's a shame they've never offered if we wanted some, like, but, you know.
00:47I'll get some cake in me own time.
00:51UK police forces have been sent over 100,000 dash cam clips.
00:57Exposing the most dangerous drivers on our roads.
01:02All hell has broken loose on our highways.
01:08You learn a lesson? At least it wasn't your test.
01:11We join the motorway cops of Northumbria Police.
01:15Shall we gun? Why, aye, of course we're gunning.
01:19As they drive criminals of the North East off the roads.
01:23Crash, crash, crash.
01:25And put the deadliest drivers behind bars.
01:28Stand still!
01:32You've got to tell us who you are.
01:34I'm a police officer. What do I look like? I'm in fancy dress.
01:36Do whatever you want. Do you want to arrest me? Do it.
01:38And let the dog out, won't you?
01:40I'm getting a little bit bored of you now.
01:42Jazz, bunch of muppets.
01:44Helping them in their battle with idiots behind the wheel.
01:47It's dash cam.
01:49It's vital evidence.
01:51Does everyone have any dash camera?
01:53It's proof that Britain's dumbest drivers...
01:56Bloody idiots.
01:58..are a law unto themselves.
02:01Police 1, criminal nil.
02:11Tonight...
02:13I've got a runner from it, if there's anyone nearby.
02:18..a drunk driver gets a sobering visit.
02:22What do you want from the car?
02:24I plank to every proper car because I love them so much.
02:27Just another police enthusiast.
02:29A superfan's dreams come true.
02:31Will I be able to sound or not?
02:33Nah, don't be daft.
02:37It's all about showing off.
02:39And a boy racer gets some unwanted attention.
02:42That's illegal.
02:44Are you asking a traffic cop whether I'm sure?
02:53Northeast England's roads are steeped in history.
02:57Roots once built for Roman emperors
03:00are now presided over by Northumbria's motorway cops.
03:11And at Follingsby Nick in Washington...
03:14Ooh, that's very close to that dog bone.
03:16..PCs Will Hunter and Martin Anderson
03:19are reigning over the night shift.
03:22We get allocated cars so we can look after them.
03:24This is mine, this is the Skoda. Martin's got one of the Volvo's.
03:27Have you seen this wheel?
03:29You could be my witness before I take it out.
03:31That's fresh, that.
03:33Ooh!
03:34Isn't it? Who's been driving that?
03:36I don't know.
03:37Brand-spankin'-new fresh hit, that.
03:39Well, I'm pleased you've seen it. I'm not getting the blame for that.
03:43I love coming into work at Sprill.
03:45It's just a really good job.
03:48My kids are proud of what I do.
03:50I try to talk them about, like, fun things
03:53and the pursuits and things like that,
03:55cos it's a little bit less gory, isn't it,
03:57than the rest of the things we end up doing all the time.
04:00I'm a bit of a...
04:02I'm a bit of a...
04:04I'm a bit of a...
04:06I'm a bit of a...
04:08I'm a bit of a...
04:10The rest of the things we end up dealing with.
04:13The youngest lad, he wanted to do the bomb disposal thing,
04:17but I think he'd been watching something on YouTube or TikTok.
04:20He'd been watching the Northumbria police's vacancy page
04:23because I hadn't seen that one there.
04:27Each day shift, night shift, whatever they may be,
04:30they all have different challenges.
04:32Night shifts, you tend to get the bad lads come out, don't ya?
04:35We're always in the mood for something juicy.
04:37The brilliant thing about night shifts is you don't know what you're going to get.
04:48It's been a little bit QT hasn't it?
04:55We always use the word QT so we don't actually use the proper word because if we say that it goes absolutely ballistic.
05:08That car's knackered.
05:10Looks like the front offside tyre's totally blown.
05:14Get in the game man.
05:16It's starting to put its foot down. It's probably saw us.
05:21It's disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
05:249-2 urgent.
05:30Stand by.
05:32There's a big puff of smoke coming off it.
05:35Pull up a bit.
05:37I'm on Paul Watson Way. There's a BMW I've got running from it if there's anyone nearby.
05:52Oh, I was drunken.
06:04I must think he's disappeared hasn't he?
06:25Disappointing.
06:27The black male in the dark coloured suit has run up towards the allotments.
06:33Have you got any vehicle details for the BMW?
06:36No, that's not going anywhere. It's got quite substantial damage to it. Give us two ticks.
06:42It looks like it's got quite a substantial hit on the front.
06:45I wouldn't be surprised if that's a write off.
06:47There's a big puff of smoke coming off it.
06:50It's probably because he's tried to drag that front offside wheel.
06:53It's actually quite a powerful car.
06:55Probably dragged most of the wheels along.
06:58So he's knocked that back offside wheel as well.
07:00I would suggest now, from the smell that's inside the car, the state of the car, it's obviously been involved in a collision.
07:06I've no doubt that the driver's drunk as well.
07:10You went after him?
07:12I didn't happen.
07:14I said to you on the radio, I said, it's always sounds a bit out of breath.
07:17I am out of breath.
07:19You have a stitch, you've just had your dinner as well haven't you?
07:21Made the whole bottom arms drop, the wheels buckled and it's a good mess like.
07:26Have a look.
07:31It's a big kerb strike that is.
07:34Wouldn't care, it's a nice looking motor as well.
07:36Keys have gone with it.
07:38Left his phone though.
07:40Will you run us a vehicle check?
07:44You see the fact that he's left the car like this.
07:47The fact that he's took off when we've told him to stop.
07:50He'll have questions to answer around what's happened and why it's happened and why he's ran off as well.
07:56Like we heard, he's probably been drinking.
07:58Tango 92.
08:00Go on.
08:02It's coming back as a BMW 335 in blue.
08:05It's registered.
08:07MOT is in order.
08:09Insurance is held.
08:11The insurance is to the keeper, insured only.
08:14We know who the registered keeper is.
08:16It says he's local.
08:19We'll take the driver back up to the registered keeper's address.
08:22Hopefully we'll come across a gentleman matching the same description.
08:25Mr. Well-dressed man.
08:27Jacket top, a pair of trousers.
08:29I think that's a pair of shoes.
08:37Well, we will knock on the door.
08:39You never know, he might just be thinking he's made good his escape.
08:44He must be moaning off, he's been driving up the road on that.
08:56All right?
08:58Yeah.
09:00How's it going?
09:02Erm.
09:25Bad drivers.
09:27Behave like animals on the road.
09:31Competing for territory.
09:37Stalking prey, ready to pounce.
09:42And running for cover in the bush.
09:47The urban jungle may just drive you wild.
09:53Mailman!
09:56BMW, I've got a runner from it.
10:01In Sunderland, Will's tracking down a dangerous driver who's made off.
10:12All right?
10:13Yeah.
10:14How's it going?
10:15Erm.
10:16What's happening?
10:17Would you like to come in?
10:19I am in. Why did you run off from the car?
10:22Erm.
10:23Would you like to tell us that?
10:26I'm not saying anything until I have legal representation.
10:29Right, that's fine. OK. Stick your hands out, please.
10:32You're under arrest.
10:34Suspicion of driving whilst unfit to drink or drugs.
10:37OK? Come on.
10:43Just jump in the back of there, my mate.
10:46So it's definitely our boy.
10:47Erm.
10:48These shoes he's been wearing when he's legged up,
10:50cos it's got the red bottoms on it.
10:53Got the keys from the back of the door with the BMW key on it.
10:58He just doesn't want to admit that he's actually been drinking and driving
11:01and has tried to be clever about it.
11:03I've got very little patience for it, in all fairness.
11:17You OK there?
11:18Under the circumstances, thank you.
11:20Excellent.
11:21Thank you to ask.
11:22What we'll do, when we get you into custody,
11:24we'll get you a pair of, erm, shoes and a pair of tracksuit bottoms.
11:28That's OK. Thank you. That's very kind of you.
11:32Just follow me.
11:51Come on.
11:56Keys for his BMW in the back of his door
11:58and the very distinctive shoes that he was running away in.
12:02Erm, they were in the front passage as well when we walked in,
12:05so he just had this very blase attitude around, erm, what he's done.
12:15And if you look at the damage to the car,
12:17he's probably very lucky that he hasn't actually killed somebody or hurt somebody.
12:37Put me locker.
12:38I've got some more caffeine, body spray.
12:43Chocolate.
12:44Perfume.
12:45You just don't know when you need to smell good.
12:50Ready to send criminals packing is PC Marianne Hutcherson.
12:56This is me work bag with all me kit in.
12:59This is me non-uniform bag, which I bring into work with all me things in.
13:03Pink, you know, I'm a girl, I love pink.
13:06I think, add a bit of colour into life.
13:08I don't like plain.
13:10Marianne is hitting the tune for a night shift.
13:21So, most people are in bed.
13:23The people who aren't are generally shift workers or criminals.
13:28If something doesn't fit right or something doesn't sit right with me,
13:32I kind of think, well, what's up?
13:34And I'm quite inquisitive like that.
13:37You know what, he just pointed at us.
13:41Straight away.
13:42Why did you point at the police?
13:47Vehicle check, please.
13:48A167.
13:50Yeah, show this to the master installer.
13:52I've got a report.
13:53Two installed MOTs in order.
13:55From Ruffin.
13:56Ruffin.
13:57Ruffin.
13:58Ruffin.
13:59Ruffin.
14:00Ruffin.
14:01Ruffin.
14:02Ruffin.
14:03Ruffin.
14:04MOTs in order.
14:05From Rotherham.
14:06Rotherham.
14:10What's he doing?
14:12There's something underneath his car that's dragging on the floor.
14:19I just keep tapping his brake lights.
14:21So it means he's a bit nervous.
14:27Oh, it's excessive braking.
14:35He was prepared for that because he's put his headset straight on.
14:41I'm going to have a chat with him at the roadside here.
14:48Ooh.
14:49That doesn't sound good, does it?
14:51My exhaust is in my boot.
14:52It fell off.
14:53I've got ideas.
14:54Oh, happy tears.
14:58God, you're about six.
15:00Came up with his...
15:02Came up with his Rotherham?
15:04Yeah.
15:05OK, so what are you doing all the way up here then?
15:07I've come to see him because he's from up round here.
15:09Ah, right.
15:10And when did your exhaust come off?
15:12Literally, like, yesterday.
15:17How do you open the boot?
15:19Ah, it's got a bit of a knack to it, right.
15:23So have you just driven up from Rotherham yesterday or today like that?
15:26I've drove up today.
15:28Right.
15:29With your exhaust like that?
15:31Yeah, it's been off.
15:33Before you leave to go back down to Rotherham,
15:35I'm hoping it's not now.
15:36No, no, not tonight.
15:37Tomorrow, take it to a garage and get that fixed
15:39because technically it's in a bit of a dangerous condition.
15:42All right.
15:43Because I would hate for anything to happen to it, all right?
15:50Yes, it is.
15:53If you want to.
15:54Yes.
15:55I do spot him on TikTok now, the police car.
15:59Am I going to be on your motorway cops and you can go on mine?
16:02He'll love you for that.
16:04You'll get loads of followers now, won't you?
16:06I've been up here all my life, can't you tell?
16:08I know, I've seen you.
16:09Just another police enthusiast.
16:12He likes flashy lights and police cars, so...
16:15Get his followers in for TikTok.
16:17Will I be able to say TikTok?
16:19Nah, don't be daft.
16:20Don't be daft.
16:22There you go.
16:27I was, like, following you, following you, that's a bit...
16:30Well, you point it, you point it.
16:32Why is he pointing it?
16:33I point at every cop car because I love them so much.
16:36Do you?
16:37Do you want to join the police when you're older?
16:39Yeah.
16:40You can get back in the car now, you know.
16:42That's a police car, it's better.
16:44All right, well, if you can, then.
16:46Right, OK, mate, no bother.
16:47Right, take care.
16:48Bye-bye, see you.
16:49Bye.
16:51Bye.
17:00Turn your lights on.
17:02Lights, lights, lights, lights.
17:04There we go.
17:08Yeah, I've got a number one fan.
17:10He says he recognises me from all the amount of times
17:15that he stands outside the police stations
17:17and a cheeky little selfie.
17:19If his number one dream is to be in the police,
17:21then, you know, why not get selfies and stuff?
17:24Because if I wanted to be a singer or whatever,
17:27and I bumped into a singer, I'd want a photograph as well, so...
17:30Yeah!
17:45Quite often, just the sight of a taser on your belt has a reaction.
17:50Hopefully, there'll be no need for use of force.
17:52There's a lot of paperwork involved deploying a taser.
17:56In Newcastle, PC Brian Camsell is fully charged for the night shift.
18:02Jobs are already coming in. It's time to hit the road.
18:08And ever ready to live up to his childhood heroes.
18:17Growing up, I think it's had to be the bill every day of the week.
18:20It was an amazing programme.
18:22The most complex job, which was solving 30 minutes.
18:26Yeah, it doesn't happen like that, does it?
18:31Is the Dukes of Hazzard classed as a cop programme?
18:34A little bit, I suppose.
18:36Big, powerful car, doing all the jumps and stunts.
18:40I can just imagine supervision's face just razzing around in one of those.
18:44Jumping over the central reservation and doing burnouts in the car park.
18:48I think we'd get ourselves into a little bit of trouble.
18:52PHONE RINGS
18:56There can be a fleet. How can I help you?
18:58We're just bringing up a progressive amount of cars showing up
19:02and doing donuts and wheel spins.
19:05And there's just more and more appearing.
19:08There's too many to count. It looks like they're planning on doing something.
19:15I've got a report of possibly 100 cars, 200 people.
19:19Opposite Hazzard on Whitney Road, an off-line industrial estate.
19:2712-56, go on.
19:34Yes, yes, I'm just echoing it.
19:36HORN HONKS
19:45With pumped-up crowds and powerful vehicles,
19:48Brian knows car meets equal chaos.
19:58In Cramlington, Northumberland,
20:00illegal drag racers capture their fast and furious exploits on dashcam.
20:06HORN HONKS
20:16But as cops cut this dangerous head-to-head short,
20:20the driver of a souped-up Corsa is still looking for pole position,
20:25challenging Brian's fellow Northumbria motorway cops to a race.
20:31OK, that Corsa now. It's built to stop. Stand by.
20:35The dangerous speed demon drifts between lanes.
20:41He hits a hairpin bend.
20:43Left, left, left. Must be into a dead end.
20:46Then careers off course.
20:49Across the area to the side of the A1.
20:52But there's no victory lap for this menace of a motorist.
20:57Going for the footbridge.
20:59And he loses a foot race too.
21:06The driver was found guilty of dangerous driving,
21:09driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
21:13He was jailed for eight months and banned from driving for a year.
21:19The event organiser was found guilty of aiding and abetting careless driving.
21:23He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £600.
21:39We've got over 100 cars gathering.
21:42Back in Newcastle, Brian and several other patrols
21:46have been called in to break up an unauthorised car meet.
21:511286, I'm just pulling on to the industrial unit now.
22:06It's all about showing off.
22:08A little bit of testosterone flies around.
22:13I think it's big and clever.
22:15Despite the heavy police presence,
22:18some boy racers are still looking for attention.
22:25He's obviously going a bit fast.
22:27He's accelerating, braking, popping and banging.
22:32He's driving a little bit erratically, anti-socially.
22:35He's obviously attracting a little bit of attention to himself.
22:39If they're racing up and down in front of the police vehicle
22:42and we do nothing, it doesn't send a good message.
22:49So we're going to have a word with them.
22:57Get your driving licence, your keys and get a seat in the back of my car.
23:02Oh, never. What have I done now?
23:04Jump in the back of the car and I'll explain what the score is.
23:08Get in the car!
23:27Daydreaming drivers...
23:30...are a nightmare.
23:33are a nightmare.
23:35Head in the clouds, sends wheels all over the road,
23:43and tuning out in traffic could bring you back down to earth.
23:50Oh, going to be an accident.
23:52With a bang.
23:54Yeah, you're right.
23:55There's a report of possibly 100 cars there, 200 people.
24:06At a car meet in Newcastle, a dodgy driver has Brian's attention.
24:20Get your driving licence, your keys, and get a seat in the back of my car.
24:31Oh, never.
24:32What have I done wrong?
24:33I'll explain at the back of the car.
24:35Jump at the back of the car and I'll explain what the score is.
24:40Excuse me while you get pulled over.
24:47You can't arrest a bloke here mate.
24:54Right, tell us about your driving tonight.
24:58I've just pulled in mate.
24:59You've just pulled in, okay.
25:01Bearing in mind you've already gone past the front of my car, tell us about your driving.
25:08There's two ways we can do this. One, we can do it sensibly.
25:11You can own up about what you've done and we can deal with it.
25:17Or if you want to go down the other line, I'll play the footage to a court.
25:22Which would you rather do?
25:23I mean I'd rather not go to court.
25:25Right, so are we going to be big enough and own up to what we've done that was silly?
25:29Erm, I've been driving quite erratic I'd say.
25:34Yeah, I would as well.
25:36You've come down to a car meet, you didn't know the police was here, you've started being a silly billy,
25:40you're revving the engine, popping and banging, you've sped off.
25:43It's a little bit silly isn't it?
25:45Yeah, I mean it doesn't bang much.
25:48But it does pop and bang.
25:50Do you have your driving licence on you?
25:51Yeah, sure.
25:53Tango 12-8-6.
25:55Vehicle check please at this car meet.
26:00Has he got any 59's Sean?
26:03No, he hasn't.
26:04He's going to get one tonight.
26:07Right.
26:10I literally, I have my sensible Hilux and I bring that like on weekends.
26:16Right.
26:18That's like sort of my baby.
26:23I try and keep myself out of trouble.
26:27I'm going to have a crawl over your car as well.
26:28Alright, yeah.
26:30When did you last check your tyres on the car?
26:33Erm.
26:36For once.
26:38I'm guessing you haven't recently.
26:40No.
26:41Right.
26:42So if I start crawling around as a vehicle examiner, am I going to find faults with your car?
26:45Erm, I'm missing the front reg, I've got that there.
26:48Yeah.
26:49I did have double sided tape for it, but the tape is ****.
26:52Look at that.
26:55You're going to call the Red Bulls mate.
26:56Oh, aye.
27:01Don't disappear.
27:03The plate is there.
27:04Whereabouts is the plate?
27:06Have you sticked it in the window?
27:08I hope you've not turned your tyres.
27:14The inside edge of the tyres are worn.
27:17What does that say?
27:19Erm, 1.52.
27:21Right, so what's the limit?
27:23No idea.
27:242.5.
27:25Who said 2.5?
27:301.6.
27:311.6.
27:32Right, so that's illegal.
27:35Are you asking a traffic cop whether I'm sure?
27:39What's that one say?
27:44Right, so that's illegal.
27:47Always check your tyres.
28:03I'd much rather educate than just start to give tickets out left, right and centre.
28:08I can't say that could have been any fairer.
28:12At least if you're going to challenge a traffic cop, get it right.
28:16Right.
28:35This car is very unmarked, but you see some people sometimes when we're driving around,
28:39especially when we're in the unmarked cars, just think,
28:42I'll just do what I want and then it's somebody else's problem.
28:45Up the back of other people, pulling out at junctions when they can't even see around the corner,
28:50stupid overtakes on busy roads.
28:53For motorway cop Will, being less visible on the roads can be very revealing.
28:59We see people putting the make-up on, getting changed.
29:03People just think they can just do what they want when they're on the road.
29:07That's the good thing about these cars.
29:13Look at this.
29:18So this car's getting rocketed in down the 1231, now it's all over the road.
29:24He undertakes him here.
29:27Bang, he slams on there.
29:29There's just no need for that.
29:32He's got the car.
29:33He's got the car.
29:34He's got the car.
29:35He's got the car.
29:36He's got the car.
29:37He's got the car.
29:38He's got the car.
29:39He's got the car.
29:40He's got the car.
29:41He's got the car.
29:43That's at 9800.
29:49He's decided to undertake another car.
29:51He's been a little bit miffed off that the car that was in front of him has been in lane two.
29:56He's stuck his brakes on in front of him to brake check him.
30:01Hope you're not trying to brake check me, mate.
30:09His driving's terrible.
30:11Yeah, I have no doubt that he does not think that was a police car behind him,
30:15but it still doesn't dictate that he drives like an absolute idiot.
30:21When motorway cops get behind bad drivers, the rules of the road go out of the window.
30:30Like this chaotic driver, spotted in Blythe, Northumberland.
30:35As Northumbria officers try to pull him over, he takes off, straight into oncoming traffic.
30:46A passenger tries to blind the cops with a torch, but it's not such a bright idea.
30:52And as the police stay on his tail, the driver takes a desperate shortcut over the pavement,
30:59narrowly avoiding a crash.
31:05Speed 70.
31:08At twice the speed limit, he collides with another car.
31:15Support, support. Alpha unit, support, support.
31:17The cops stop and deal with the accident.
31:19Continue on the pedestrian road.
31:21But the chopper takes over.
31:26And guides two more cop cars straight to the suspect.
31:35Contact.
31:37The driver was found guilty of dangerous driving and driving without a license and insurance.
31:47He was sentenced to 14 months in jail, suspended for 18 months,
31:52and given a curfew for six months.
31:56He was also banned from driving for three years.
32:04That's it, 98, 100.
32:06He's decided to undertake another cop.
32:12Hope you're not trying to brake check me, mate.
32:15Back in Sunderland, a dangerous driver has failed to spot Will's unmarked cop car.
32:21By God, they're going to know that we're an unmarked police car when we'll stick the blue lights on.
32:26See what his excuses are.
32:28and unmarked police car when we'll stick the blue lights on.
32:52See what his excuses are?
32:59Good morning. How are you?
33:01Any reason why you think I might have stopped you?
33:05Yep, that's one of the reasons.
33:07At one point, when I was very close to you,
33:09doing upwards of 96 miles an hour,
33:11you were right up the chuff of that car ahead of you.
33:13You then got miffed off that he wasn't pulling the head.
33:16You then undertook.
33:17Can you remember what you done as soon as you got in front of him?
33:20You slammed your brakes on, OK?
33:22You then drove, like I say, nigh on up to 100 miles an hour.
33:27And if you were looking in your mirrors,
33:29you would have noticed that there was a car following you at that speed.
33:32Any reason for your driving?
33:36Mate, I have bad weeks every single week,
33:38but it doesn't mean I can drive like an idiot, all right?
33:41Have you got your driving licence on you, please?
33:44What's going to happen is you're going to be issued with what's called
33:47Section 59 warning.
33:50What that means is if within 12 months
33:52you are stopped in a similar manner again,
33:54you can have your car seized, all right?
33:58That's not the end of it.
34:00You're also going to be reported for the offence of speeding.
34:04When I looked down, the last speed I saw was 96 miles an hour.
34:08You're also going to be reported for the offence of careless driving.
34:12How many points have you got on your licence?
34:13None.
34:14None at the minute.
34:17How long have you had your licence for?
34:18Just under two years.
34:20I know.
34:22Am I likely to have lost my licence?
34:23Possibly, yes.
34:25We don't need people driving like that.
34:27If you're having a bad time, or things are on your mind,
34:30then slow down.
34:31Not just take it out on everyone else.
34:33Right.
34:51He's running out of his licence for less than two years,
34:53so the likelihood is
34:55he could potentially even lose his driving licence,
34:57and the only person who he's going to have to blame
35:00is himself.
35:03When people are having a bad week, or a bad day,
35:06or whatever it is,
35:07it's not the best place to take it out on the roads
35:11because people do silly things.
35:13You're driving like that,
35:14you're driving like that,
35:15you're driving like that,
35:16you're driving like that,
35:17you're driving like that,
35:18and people do silly things.
35:19You're driving a two-tone weapon, basically.
35:41It's bright this morning.
35:43The blue sky, sunshine,
35:45definitely puts everybody in a good mood for the day.
35:55Brian is revving up for the day shift in Newcastle,
35:59and dreaming of trading in his four wheels for two.
36:05The start of the motorbiking season,
36:07the change of the weather
36:08definitely brings more bikes out onto the roads.
36:11So this rider looks quite careful and confident.
36:15So I've got a bike myself,
36:17and with the weather changing,
36:19it's time my bike came out of the garage.
36:22When you're riding, it's just a freedom.
36:27My partner's working at the regional trauma centre
36:30at the hospital.
36:31She doesn't like the bike.
36:34She sees the injuries, you know.
36:38I know I'm going to ride sensibly.
36:41Hopefully, the force of reintroducing motorcycles
36:45into our role.
36:47Hopefully, we'll be going through my advanced course.
36:50Can't wait.
36:59I think we'll be staying close to central area today, Newcastle.
37:05It's my area, I like it.
37:07Perhaps a bit speeders, the usual no insurances,
37:10intoxicated drivers, mobile phone offences.
37:20So we just had an ANPR ping for a Vauxhall Corsa with no insurance.
37:27We've got an idea where the register keeper lives.
37:32And the likely route from here is going to be A1 northbound.
37:35So I'll stick my toe down a little bit,
37:37we'll put the blues on and find this vehicle.
37:41MUSIC
37:48Insurance prices are going up every year
37:51because of uninsured drivers.
37:54I don't see why they should be driving around without it.
38:06Right, what have we got?
38:08A 65 plate, that's the one.
38:12Just need to close the gap a little bit and then get it pulled in.
38:39MUSIC
38:51Dashcam brings you the latest breaking news.
38:55With live reports on Britain's bad driving.
38:59What are you doing?
39:01Oh, my God.
39:04Eyewitness accounts.
39:06Stupid!
39:08And drivers making headlines...
39:12..while neglecting to read the road.
39:20So we just had an ANPR ping for a Vauxhall Corsa with no insurance.
39:29That's the one.
39:33In Newcastle, Brian is stopping a suspected uninsured driver.
39:38MUSIC
39:56You all right?
39:58You're taking the ignition?
39:59Come and have a seat in my car.
40:01Jump in the back left for us.
40:03Go round that side.
40:05Hello.
40:06First time I've ever been stopped off the police.
40:08Is it your car first of all?
40:09It is, yeah.
40:10Perfect. I think you've got a driving licence?
40:12Yes.
40:13So the reason I've stopped you today is your car's shown as having no insurance.
40:17Oh, really?
40:18Yeah.
40:19Sometimes it's a mistake.
40:20You know, there's errors.
40:22So I've just insured it for the day-to-day.
40:25Right.
40:27Trying to get my emails up but I can't get on anything.
40:30Don't know whether it's a signal or what.
40:34If you don't have insurance, what happens, you see, is we take the car.
40:38So if you've got it, I'd rather spend the extra time now
40:42finding that out rather than just taking it off you.
40:45While you're looking for that, I'll do another enquiry,
40:48just in case you can't find it.
40:50So all the insurance companies report to a central office
40:54known as the Motor Insurance Bureau.
40:56Hopefully it's just not come through on the system yet
40:59and they come back and say it's all in order.
41:03Can I take your shoulder number?
41:05Certainly, it's 1-2-8-6.
41:07Thank you. Is that Officer Campbell?
41:09It is.
41:10Who does the driver believe they've got cover with?
41:12Insure Daily.
41:15Email signal's terrible, I can't get on anything.
41:20No cover in place with Insure Daily today.
41:23OK.
41:25I do have a little bit more information if you want to and want me to pass.
41:30Er, two seconds.
41:33No.
41:34Yeah, right, I'm here now. Go ahead.
41:44Right.
41:47OK, no problem. Thank you very much.
41:51So they've basically come back and confirmed
41:54that you've got no cover in place.
41:56They've got records of when you try and take policies out
41:59and it tells me you've tried to take a policy out
42:02while you've been stopped here at the roadside.
42:04Oh, me!
42:07They are going to seize the vehicle under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act.
42:11I can see that stupidity on my part.
42:16Yeah, I could kick myself.
42:18Have you got your car key?
42:20Yeah.
42:21Can I pinch the key off you?
42:27You know, some people do tell us the truth,
42:29but she knows she hasn't had a policy caught out on this occasion.
42:44Hopefully the recovery truck's on its way.
42:51Two vehicles that were stolen overnight.
42:53Looks like they're possibly abandoned.
42:56Oh, South Denton.
42:57That's the area commander.
42:58Oh, they're in the corner from us.
43:00If there aren't any officers in that area, try to secure it.
43:09I want recovery here.
43:11OK.
43:13Quick one, is the Anton going to help?
43:15Hi, this is Brian from the police. Do you know if your vehicle's far off?
43:18No, it's 87 minutes away.
43:20OK, thank you.
43:23While we're waiting for recovery,
43:24I'm going to go and find a couple of stolen cars.
43:31So seven minutes was what it took for recovery.
43:36So I've probably got seven minutes to find these cars.
43:43With those vehicles now.
43:47Both locked secure, no damage.
43:49Just round the back, next to a couple of garages.
43:53Nice little tip-off from a member of the public.
43:56Yeah, I think we've got two minutes left.
44:05There's two stolen cars down there.
44:07I nicked in a burglary last night.
44:12That's a good result. I'd rather run around a little bit.
44:15Hopefully there's going to be a victim there that's overjoyed
44:18that the cars have been recovered.
44:20I'm happy to do little bits and pieces like that.
44:23It's boring sitting in one place.
44:32If you have any dashcam clips you think could feature
44:35in the next series of Motorway Cops, Catching Britain's Speeders,
44:38send them, along with your contact details,
44:41to contact us at purpleproductions.co.uk.
44:50Thanks for watching.
45:20Thanks for watching.
