Motorway Cops Catching Britain's Speeders S01E02
Transcript
00:00It's just another day on Britain's roads.
00:07Uniform 6-5, we've got three on board of the vehicle.
00:12In Runcorn, Cheshire Police, led by PC Niaz Waddington,
00:17stop a vehicle they suspect is being driven by drug dealers from Liverpool.
00:21Runcorn custody, mate.
00:26It's another success for Niaz and his team.
00:31The A-team would say, don't you love it when a plan comes together?
00:34Just need the cigar now.
00:40With deaths and serious injuries caused by accidents on our roads on the increase,
00:45it's no wonder that around a quarter of all UK vehicles now have dashcams fitted.
00:55It's just crashed. It's crashed upside down.
00:59And the great British public are capturing outrageous driving on camera.
01:07Across the country, motorway cops are relying more and more on the evidence of dashcams uploaded to them.
01:20Off that wall. 301 over five.
01:26In this series, conscious and breathing, being seen to by fire and ambulance, possible spinal injuries.
01:33We follow them.
01:36I never saw that. Oh, my God.
01:40As they crack down on Britain's bad drivers.
01:45Tonight, they discover an illegal driver on the motorway.
01:49Up front, our records show you've got a provisional driving licence. Am I correct?
01:55Have you got your camera on, yeah? Yeah.
01:58Sees drugs being couriered through their canteen.
02:01So we've got a large amount of white powder and some vacuum-packed cannabis also.
02:06And put a suspected drink driver to the test.
02:12Have you ever blown a balloon up? Never.
02:30Plain cheeseburger and some chips.
02:33I'm not a huge fan of spicy food or anything like that, unfortunately.
02:37So it's a plain cheeseburger for me.
02:43Dirty refs is just like a takeaway.
02:45Just some hot food and obviously refs is just food.
02:48But, yeah, dirty refs, it's nice every now and again to be able to pick me up.
02:58Cheshire Police patrol one of the longest stretches of motorway in the UK,
03:02with over 200 miles of carriageway.
03:07PHONE RINGS
03:09Cheshire Police, what's the emergency?
03:17Where's the attackers now?
03:25Uniform 76 en route from M6.
03:28Traffic officers, like PC Dave Reid,
03:31have to be prepared to deal with anything that comes their way.
03:34Where do you want me, boss?
03:52So, there's been an earlier incident with this vehicle,
03:56where they've attacked a person with a machete.
03:59So we'll head over to see if we can find this vehicle.
04:05Violence, involving weapons like knives and machetes,
04:09have hit a record high.
04:11And in England and Wales, police officers are increasingly becoming targets.
04:17No, you're not going?
04:19This bodycam footage shows police officers in London
04:22pulling over a driver in a white van.
04:24Where are you going?
04:26What happens next is unbelievable.
04:28You're not driving away, sir. You're not driving away, sir.
04:32Don't you dare!
04:40Machete!
04:43The second time the driver comes at the officer with the machete,
04:46he manages to taser him.
04:48And with help, the attacker is apprehended.
04:51Hold him down, come!
04:53Hold him, hold him.
04:55Hold him.
04:59The officer received six gashes to his head and arm,
05:02but thankfully survived.
05:06The machete-wielding driver was jailed for 16 years
05:09for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
05:18Back in Cheshire.
05:21PC Dave Reed is in pursuit of a silver grey van.
05:29His occupants are suspected of being involved in an earlier machete attack.
05:36There's an element of danger when there's someone armed and dangerous,
05:39but at the same time, there's also a little bit of a thrill in those jobs,
05:43a bit of excitement in those jobs.
05:45That was me, I did, I joined the job for that.
05:51I've dealt with a few of these.
05:53Unfortunately, knives and machetes nowadays are quite common, aren't they,
05:58as a choice of weapon.
06:00You kind of get used to it, sadly.
06:11Right, I'll sit up here.
06:15Coming towards our way.
06:18Location, please.
06:31Ryan, Southern Expressway, we're past.
06:34It might come our way.
06:36You've got to keep focused because you've got to protect yourself
06:40and you've got to protect the public.
06:47Bad drivers caught speeding make up 85% of all murdering offences.
06:52Here, near Leicester, these reckless high-speed racers
06:55narrowly miss wiping out a group of pedestrians,
06:59while even on country roads, they're risking people's lives.
07:09Bad drivers caught speeding make up 85% of all murdering offences.
07:15Back in Cheshire.
07:18Dave is in pursuit of a silver grey van,
07:21along with a team of firearms officers.
07:26Its two occupants are suspected of being involved in a machete attack
07:30and could still be armed and dangerous.
07:33Police cameras have traced the van nearby.
07:36Do you know what? I will sit up here.
07:41Up here.
07:47Any time suspects are believed to have weapons,
07:50armed cops are called in.
08:00The van's been spotted only a few miles from Dave's location.
08:11There they are, up there.
08:15Just saw the back of a police car.
08:29Dave makes his way to the scene
08:31as the firearms units are putting on a hard stop.
08:37An aggressive-looking interception technique.
08:41Drop down on your knees. Do it now.
08:45Designed to take suspects by surprise.
08:48The armed officers start by removing the driver,
08:51then any other passengers in the vehicle.
08:54Passenger, step out of the vehicle.
08:58Slowly, walk towards Dave. Stop there.
09:03Keep coming.
09:05So the little jobs you can go and deal with yourself,
09:09they're just bread-and-butter jobs.
09:12But when you go to the big jobs,
09:14you rely on your colleagues to be there to support you.
09:17Go there. Go there. Get down on your knees.
09:20You lean on each other because you need their help
09:23as much as they need your help.
09:31Get in your house! Get in your house!
09:34Within minutes of Dave's arrival,
09:36both suspects are out of the vehicle.
09:48I'm locked on the bases, mate, when we came round.
09:55We're getting taken in for a section 18 assault
09:58with regards to the machete attack.
10:00So we'll arrest them and take them into custody.
10:03Follow me then, buddy.
10:06The firearms unit check the van for weapons
10:09and make sure it's safe whilst Dave makes an arrest.
10:13You're under arrest on suspicion of section 18 assault
10:16and a robbery which occurred later on, well, earlier on today.
10:19All right?
10:20You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence.
10:23If you don't mention questions, something later on in the court,
10:26anything you do say may be given evidence.
10:28All right. I'll close this door.
10:37Both men are taken into custody.
10:47All right, bud. Right. Chumpa.
10:51Neither a machete or pickaxe were recovered from the van.
10:57Right.
11:07Dashcam footage is increasingly becoming a vital,
11:10independent witness for insurance companies.
11:16What are you...doing?!
11:19Help!
11:21Providing irrefutable evidence of dodgy
11:23or even downright dangerous driving
11:26to help resolve insurance claims.
11:31Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!
11:34Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!
11:44All right. You take it easy.
11:50Yeah, so these are the, um...the bad boys.
11:56Woo! It's hot.
11:58Yeah, I can't even have McFlurry.
12:01Yeah, diet time.
12:08It's 7.40pm on the M6,
12:11and with over 20 years of service,
12:13PC Niaz Waddington knows to trust his instincts.
12:17Now I'm interested in this Astra...
12:20Mike Oscar, 27MH.
12:22Can I have a moving vehicle check, please?
12:25It should be a silver Vauxhall Astra.
12:30It could be something or nothing,
12:32but his rear windscreen's missing
12:34and he's just got plastic over it.
12:39We've got a call back from Stellar Insurance,
12:42and we have over 20 years of service,
12:44and with over 20 years of service,
12:46we've got a call back from Stellar Insurance,
12:48and the MOT expired last month.
12:51Yeah, received.
12:53I'll try and get it stopped as soon as we come out of the ALR section.
12:57I'll take a shot.
12:59The vehicle has no valid insurance, MOT or rear windscreen.
13:04Let's see what happens.
13:12When you see damage on vehicles,
13:14it's a red light straightaway to you.
13:17A simple road-traffic stop can lead to bigger things.
13:26Right, let's go.
13:30Mike Oscar, 27MH, stop 2-9-1-0-5.
13:37All right.
13:39Yeah, do you know why I stopped you?
13:41Because of my back window.
13:43That did come to my attention.
13:45The reason I've stopped you, funny enough,
13:47you're coming up as no insurance on the vehicle.
13:50I should be insured.
13:52Right, when did you last check your policy?
13:54Paid it on the 26th.
13:56Just gone?
13:58And is that for, what, a 12-month policy?
14:00That should be renewed for another 12 months.
14:02It should?
14:04The only thing I can do
14:06is give you the opportunity to insure at the roadside.
14:09If you're unable to insure at the roadside,
14:11your vehicle will get recovered.
14:13Sorry?
14:15Yeah.
14:17If you're able to sort it out now...
14:27Are you able to jump in the back of my car
14:29so we can chat and try and sort out your insurance in there, mate?
14:35Despite the driver phoning his mum...
14:42..he's not been able to get his car insured.
14:48Right. Yo.
14:50All right, up front and everything,
14:53our records show you've got a provisional driving licence.
14:56Am I correct?
14:58No, I've got a provisional.
15:00You've got a provisional? OK.
15:02The driver hasn't even passed his test.
15:05So, even if you had insurance,
15:08then your vehicle would have been seized
15:10because you would need somebody
15:12who's been driving for three years and over 21.
15:15OK. All right, mate.
15:18I apologise, mate. Sorry.
15:22Somebody with no insurance on the vehicle,
15:24if they're up front, throw their hands up,
15:26yeah, I'm stupid, shouldn't have done it,
15:28I'll let them insure at the roadside,
15:30but if somebody tries to pull the wool over my eyes,
15:32then, no, your vehicle's coming
15:34because you will continue to drive with no insurance on it.
15:38So, you ring that number,
15:40and it explains the process to you of what will happen.
15:44You're going to end up with points on your licence,
15:46on your provisional licence.
15:48There are around one million uninsured drivers on UK roads,
15:53but thanks to Myas, this one is off the road.
16:09There's a chippy we go to last night,
16:11and we had salt-and-pepper chicken with curry sauce and chips,
16:16and it was amazing. Nice.
16:18Oh, it is.
16:22Next time this learner wants a bag of chips,
16:25he'll need a lift from his mum.
16:28There are over half a million heavy goods vehicles on UK roads,
16:33and most are fitted with dashcams.
16:36And one in ten fatal accidents involve HGVs.
16:43Capturing brake checking like this from other drivers.
16:48And some are due to HGV drivers failing to see other road users.
16:57On the M62 westbound carriageway,
17:00this terrifying collision happened when an HGV hits a car
17:05whilst attempting to change lanes.
17:08It's the first time in a decade
17:10that an HGV has hit a car while trying to change lanes.
17:14After impact, the car was pushed along horizontally
17:17at nearly 50 miles per hour.
17:22Luckily, both drivers avoided serious injury.
17:28Hotel Tango, Hotel Uniform 828.
17:32PC Andy Doran is patrolling one of the busiest bypasses in Cheshire.
17:38Yeah, I've come across a bump on the A555.
17:42It's between 523 and the Woodford Junction.
17:46I've got four vehicles pulled to the near side.
17:48I'll just do some enquiries while I've got them.
17:50A truck and three cars are all stationary on the inside lane.
17:55Hi there.
17:57And it looks like it's much more serious than a bump.
18:01Are you OK?
18:02I'm OK.
18:03OK, please just stay there.
18:05An elderly passenger in the back of the Fiesta
18:08is struggling to breathe and can't get out of the vehicle.
18:11Hotel Uniform 828.
18:13Is there a patrol available?
18:15I've come across a four-vehicle RTC in a live lane.
18:18It's not a live lane.
18:20It's a four-vehicle RTC.
18:22It's not a live lane.
18:24It's a four-vehicle RTC.
18:26It's not a live lane.
18:28It's a four-vehicle RTC in a live lane.
18:31It's working out who is part of the accident
18:34to see the level of injuries that they have.
18:37Keep somebody with them to monitor them
18:39while I go and check everybody else.
18:41Have you requested an ambulance?
18:45Yeah, I'm on the A555.
18:47As you come out of Poynton, off the 523.
18:51Any open fractures or bleeding or anything?
18:53No.
18:55OK.
18:56OK, no problem.
19:00No, I have a...
19:02It's OK, I'm good.
19:04I'm just sitting on glass.
19:20The one person Andy really needs to speak to
19:23is the lorry driver.
19:27You all right, pal?
19:30What's happened, mate?
19:40On Britain's roads,
19:42dashcams are now capturing drivers at their worst.
19:49From not paying attention
19:51to a complete disregard for the safety of other road users.
19:56Keep them moving.
20:00Reckless drivers are everywhere,
20:03even on the pavements.
20:14Anybody injured?
20:19You OK?
20:21OK, please, just stay there.
20:23It's rush hour on the A555 Manchester Airport Relief Road.
20:28Have you requested an ambulance?
20:31Yeah, I'm on the A555.
20:33And PC Andy Doran is first on the scene
20:36of a serious road traffic collision.
20:39A car has been involved in an accident with a lorry.
20:48You all right, pal?
20:50What's happened, mate?
20:52I just remember moving into the inside lane
20:55and whoever they were undertaking me,
20:58I've gone into them.
21:00OK, can you view your cameras from here?
21:02No, I can't.
21:04You don't? OK, no worries at all.
21:12Andy needs to speak to the witness to see what she saw.
21:16The lane's got dashcams, so they're going to look at it.
21:20Just seeing if I can view it.
21:23But first, he uses a trusted old-school method.
21:27Car in front of you, yeah?
21:29And then in front of the car in front of me...
21:31Yeah?
21:32..was that lorry that crashed into them.
21:34So this one here, which is that lorry there, so that's V1, yeah?
21:38And this lorry didn't see the car and just pulled it in,
21:41slammed straight into the side of them.
21:43Oh, so it hit the side first?
21:45Yeah, it hit the side, they spun all the way around and then came back.
21:48I think it clipped a barrier or something,
21:50which is what's done most of the damage to the car.
21:57Erm, pulse rate was 81.97.
22:00Hiya, Maria.
22:01Oxygen on her, it's gone down to 70.
22:03She's stable.
22:04Obviously, before we move the casualty,
22:06we just want to make sure the paramedics assess her spine,
22:09her C-spine, to make sure that there's no injuries there.
22:12So when they're happy, then they might get her to climb out,
22:15and if they ask her to do an extrication,
22:17then we'll have to take the roof off and take her out on a longboard.
22:21With the passenger in safe hands...
22:23Can I just come down here a second?
22:25..Andy's focus shifts back to the driver of the HGV.
22:29OK, having obviously spoken to the witness and seen the details of that,
22:33I'm happy that you've come from lane two to lane one
22:37without seeing this vehicle. Yeah.
22:39Is that right? Yeah. Am I right on that? Yeah.
22:41I'm going to take your details,
22:42because obviously my colleague's taken the details, just on that basis.
22:45I'll lean on my car, save me holding this.
22:47As the driver has taken responsibility,
22:50all that remains is getting the family home safely.
22:53I'm just going to get the lady out of the car now. OK, love.
23:00I'm not injured in that, as such.
23:03Neither did my two daughters.
23:05The wife's had to come to get me.
23:08The most important thing is the people.
23:10Nobody's injured, but the car's not drivable,
23:13so my colleagues from Poynton Police are going to whizz them back to Poynton,
23:18take them to a nice coffee shop,
23:20and wait for a family to come and collect them from witness.
23:23Take them back home.
23:28..only a female kit,
23:30and then you're going to guess how much that kit will cost.
23:34The dashcam that was retrieved from the witness a few days later
23:38showed exactly what happened.
23:53He didn't appear to see the car on his inside before changing lanes.
23:58THEY CONTINUE,
24:16Back at base, it's safe to say
24:18that the car has likely been repaired and the body is on its way back to Poynton.
24:22Back at base, PC Chris Swash is gearing up for the start of his shift.
24:30Yeah, it's quite fitting, 007, Locker, looks, personality and I'm dead strong, so he's obviously
24:39giving it to me for a reason.
24:50Because all road accidents are avoidable, while incidents like heart attacks that cause
24:55drivers to lose control of a vehicle are rare, the consequences can be devastating.
25:17Chris has to race to an emergency on the M56.
25:20We've got reports of a vehicle that's stopped on a motorway, a male collapsed at the wheel.
25:29Ambulance are making on a grade one, so just given it's on a motorway network, it's not
25:35in a hard shoulder.
25:36It could be encroaching on live lane, we're going to make sure that it's not interfering
25:40with traffic or put another user of the road at risk.
25:48Got blue lights over here.
25:57Got two ambulances on scene with that vehicle at the moment, so I'm just going to turn at
26:04Hatchford.
26:05So when we attend now, our role will be to, one, ascertain what's happened, why is he
26:10stopped in a hard shoulder, if he's collapsed at the wheel, there may be things that we
26:14need to look at, so drink or drug drivers, and just TA.
26:21Sometimes it is through poor driving, or through people under the influence, but then that's
26:24down for us to prove them, or disprove them.
26:27And I don't believe we'll need a lane closure, no we won't, it's in a hard shoulder, all
26:31vehicles in a hard shoulder.
26:32Right, go and find out what's going on.
26:33Hello there.
26:34You OK?
26:35Yes, fine, thanks, my colleagues are just getting me to the ambulance.
26:36Is he alright?
26:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:38No suspicion of drink or drugs?
26:39No, not from me.
26:40Cool.
26:41Hello.
26:42Hello.
26:43You OK?
26:44What's happened?
26:45I just started sweating, and the next minute, all I knew then is, Adam was trying to pull
26:59the wheel over, because I was going towards a centre of motivation, and as I come back
27:06into consciousness, I just got off the motorway, and then I basically just fell off the van,
27:12just shaking, and I didn't know where I was at that point.
27:16So I was more worried about Adam, and then I thought, I could have killed him.
27:26You OK mate?
27:27You alright?
27:28Were you with him, were you?
27:29Yeah, yeah.
27:30Because he's clearly unwell, because he's shaking in the back there.
27:33So he's completely out, you know what I mean?
27:35Yeah.
27:36So I've talked to my meds.
27:37So the paramedics have suggested it might be dehydration, and it takes out of you when
27:42it's like this.
27:43It does take it out of you.
27:44You've just got nowhere to rest, haven't you?
27:45No.
27:47The driver was clearly overcome by the effects of the hot weather.
27:51He's very lucky, this time of the morning as well, everyone's travelling to work.
27:54It's just lucky he's had his mate in the passenger seat next to him.
27:58Because failing that, if he has collapsed, he knows where he's going to go.
28:03But after a full medical check, it was given the all clear.
28:06But it's still only the start of Chris' shift, and his next job has already come in.
28:15Chris and a colleague in an unmarked car are lying in wait for a vehicle that's been parked
28:19in the back of the car.
28:20They're not sure what it is.
28:21It's a car.
28:22It's a car.
28:23It's a car.
28:24It's a car.
28:25It's a car.
28:26It's a car.
28:27It's a car.
28:28It's a car.
28:29It's a car.
28:30It's a car.
28:31It's a car.
28:32A line in wait for a vehicle that's travelling from Manchester, and could be carrying drugs.
28:40We'll get behind it.
28:41We're going to ask it to take off – we're going to take it off at junction 12, hopefully.
28:43There's a layby down there where we'll stop it and search it.
28:46The car in front, that's one of my colleagues.
28:49He's going to join the motorway and try to sight the vehicle first.
28:53Once he's confirmed that, I'll get behind him.
28:56If it's not, I'll sit and wait to see if I can pick it up.
28:58Oh, there it is, I think.
29:16Phil, I'm behind you, mate.
29:17You're gonna put a follow me on now.
29:18Stay behind him.
29:24Chris and his colleague begin to box in the vehicle.
29:28So, subject vehicle's in front.
29:31Plan is, Phil, go in front of it, put a follow me on.
29:34We'll take it off at the next juncture.
29:374-4, it's ignored Phil's request to get off.
29:41As the driver refuses to pull over,
29:46they've got a potential pursuit on their hands.
29:48Chris and his colleague put on their blue light.
29:52A shift confirmed, he's not...
29:54He's not taken a refused request so far.
29:58I am aware that people have different reactions to the police
30:00when you see those blue lights going on in the rear view mirror.
30:02But when we're stopping people,
30:04ordinarily, they've had a run-in with the police
30:06so they know what's coming.
30:16All across Britain, dashcams are proving invaluable
30:20in capturing illegal manoeuvres on the roads.
30:22Look, look, Chris.
30:24Idiot. What an idiot.
30:26From drivers completely unaware of other vehicles...
30:29Oh, s**t!
30:32..to others pulling out into moving traffic...
30:38..and those driving straight into other cars.
30:44F**k me.
30:46This appalling driving caused over 115,000 casualties
30:51in road traffic accidents in 2020.
31:05Back on the M6 in Cheshire.
31:07Yeah, just going 340 over there. Oh, no.
31:09Phil, I'm behind you, mate.
31:10You're going to put a follow me on and I'll stay behind him.
31:13A suspected drug dealer has refused to pull over.
31:17And PC Chris Swash and his colleague
31:19may have a potential pursuit on their hands.
31:28What I thought I'd just say up to date, we've lit it up,
31:31he's now in the kittens, the hard shoulder.
31:39Yeah, I'm on the hard shoulder right now.
31:41It's time for them to find out why he didn't stop.
31:48Have you got a driving licence?
31:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:51Can I have it, please?
31:53That's what I said, have you got a driving licence?
31:57Yeah, he wasn't stopping. He wasn't what?
31:59He didn't get off, he tried his luck, I think.
32:01Did Phil get off?
32:03Phil was just getting off, but then he didn't get off,
32:05so Phil just pulled off at the last minute, came back on.
32:09Phil?
32:10Just so you know, cos he's not got off and we asked him to,
32:12we're going to search the car and pull it down.
32:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, mate.
32:16Is there anything that's going to harm my colleagues?
32:18What?
32:20Right, weed. That's not going to harm my colleagues.
32:22Is there anything dangerous?
32:24No, no, no.
32:26You got the camera on, yeah? Yeah.
32:33Yeah.
32:35An incredible discovery is made in the footwell
32:38on the passenger side of the car.
32:42So we've got a large amount of white powder
32:46and some vacuum-packed cannabis also.
32:50When we are stopping vehicles with drugs on board...
32:52Can we tell you in a form, 4-4?
32:54..we've got what appears to be a large quantity of crack cocaine
32:57and some vacuum-packed cannabis also.
33:00We are, in the back of our minds, thinking about the bigger picture,
33:03so is this just part of a smaller puzzle?
33:05Far more than your personal use of that.
33:07So he's going to be in a bit of bother, I would imagine.
33:10We're hitting the top guy, the head honcho,
33:12taking drugs from one part of the county to another part of the county
33:15and a big drugs exchange is taking place.
33:23I hate the hard shoulder.
33:29Do you have anything in your pocket?
33:32Look at the sole.
33:39A bit of money in your sock?
33:41What's in your sock?
33:43Money, which... No.
33:49Unfortunately, sir, we're going to be seizing that as well, OK?
33:52That'll be his cash for couriering the drugs.
33:55He was in his... Dropped down his shop.
34:00We'll be off the hard shoulder in the next five minutes.
34:05It's time for Chris to take the man to custody.
34:12We'll come in, we'll all meet. We're just parking at the front.
34:15Parking? Yeah. I'll meet him.
34:17Nice one. Right, see you in a bit, then.
34:25So, the plan now is, it's a lot safer to search the car properly
34:28when we get off the network, so we're going to run this chap into Blakeney.
34:32He'll be lodged and we'll do a proper search of the vehicle,
34:35see if we can find anything else.
34:37That's the plan.
34:41The drive to custody is often the most difficult part of the search.
34:45It's a long drive.
34:47It's a long drive.
34:49It's a long drive.
34:52The drive to custody is often an intriguing one.
35:00Well, hopefully, this is an eye-opener for you.
35:07Well, no, it's never too late. How old are you?
35:1044? No, you're still young.
35:13Just don't let this happen again.
35:15Whatever happens with this, I mean, you probably know what to expect.
35:20But speak to people, get some help,
35:23because I can tell you now, there are ways out
35:26that don't involve doing what you've done today.
35:29There are ways out.
35:31As you can imagine, in the job I do, I've been doing it for six years,
35:34and you can imagine the amount of different people I meet and what they do.
35:37You don't have to resort to this, mate.
35:40It's very easy for me to sit here and say that, but...
35:43To be honest, I don't think you're patronising.
35:47It's nice just for you to be nice to me, obviously.
35:51On my last leg of freedom, it's nice for someone to be nice.
35:55We'll all be nice to you. We're nice in Cheshire.
36:05Hello, got one on for Piewicz.
36:10Thanks.
36:12While the arrested man awaits processing in custody...
36:15If you want to grab a seat on there, my mate,
36:17and then I'll get those cuffs off you.
36:19..Chris gives the car a more thorough search.
36:26Popplio, never heard of that Pokemon before.
36:29Apart from the Pokemon card, nothing else is found in the car.
36:34But the drugs recovered from the roadside...
36:37At least he's put it in an evidence bag for us.
36:39..have a street value of almost £30,000.
36:45The chap, he will remain in custody
36:47until we've got all the evidence gathered.
36:49We'll do Section 18 at his address,
36:51and I suspect for that amount of drugs that we've found today,
36:54he'll be remanded in custody.
36:56We can't have someone like that on the streets.
37:15Drink driving is one of the biggest killers on UK roads.
37:21And recent data shows that 13% of road deaths
37:24involve at least one driver over the alcohol limit.
37:45It's 1.30 in the morning, and PC Niaz-Waddington
37:48is in pursuit of a speeding driver on the M6.
37:54A member of the public called in
37:56and reported that it was driving at 100 miles per hour.
38:04It's being followed by two marked police officers.
38:07We've got a driver on the M6.
38:09We've got a driver on the M6.
38:12It's being followed by two marked police cars.
38:20And it's Niaz's job to overtake it and put a Follow Me sign on.
38:42Driving erratically is a key indication...
38:48..of drink or drug driving.
38:53In Coleshill, on the outskirts of Birmingham,
38:56a car is being pursued by the police.
38:59Behind the wheel is a suspected drink driver,
39:02who is desperately trying to avoid being caught.
39:05Reaching speeds of nearly 50 miles per hour in a 30 zone,
39:10the reckless driver finally loses control
39:13on a sharp left-hand bend,
39:15crashing inches from someone's front door.
39:28He was later found to be three times the drink drive limit.
39:34Back on the M6...
39:39Junction 18 can't come too soon.
39:44Niaz and two other officers are trying to stop a driver
39:47who's reported to have been speeding at 100 miles per hour.
39:51With the vehicle in sight, Niaz is going to overtake it
39:55and activate a sign in the hope it complies.
40:10It's complying.
40:13It's moving over into lane two.
40:17Mike Oscar 27, if we can just have the air, please.
40:20We're just half a mile from 18.
40:22The vehicle's slowed way down once they've put the Follow Me on.
40:26It's probably doing about 30 miles an hour.
40:31That'll do us. It's come off.
40:33It's come off.
40:53As the driver claims, he hasn't had a drink tonight.
41:03He shouldn't have a problem with being breathalysed.
41:10No.
41:12Have you ever blown a balloon up?
41:14You must have blown a balloon up.
41:16So you're going...
41:18Right, just watch.
41:20So you take a deep breath in, it's long continuous, like...
41:24That is what you're doing, mate. That is the motion.
41:27Right. If you don't provide, you will be arrested, mate.
41:30And your car's going to end up going to a compound.
41:32It's on the motorway.
41:34Right.
41:53I just think that if they're trying to deceive the machine
41:58and not provide the sample of breath at the roadside,
42:01they know themselves they've been, you know, obviously drinking,
42:04they may be over the prescribed limit,
42:06and if so, why have they got into a car?
42:09His refusal to give a sample of his breath at the roadside
42:12means he's under arrest.
42:16You're all right giving blood, aren't you?
42:18You OK giving blood?
42:20Sorry? Yeah.
42:22Well, you'll end up...
42:24If we can't obtain breath, then it'll be blood.
42:27No, no, no, mate.
42:31Mate, can you not twist up my arm, please?
42:34Sorry? Can you not twist up my arm?
42:36I'm not twisting your arm.
42:38Yeah, but if you can pull the middle bit out.
42:40Move this arm to the middle bit.
42:43Can you not twist up my arm, please?
42:45Yeah.
42:47It's all being filmed.
42:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, look at the tube.
42:51The tube, yeah?
42:53Yeah.
42:56Yeah.
43:11I don't have any sympathy because the number of road deaths
43:14and serious injury due to alcohol as well, or drug driving,
43:18we're the ones having to go to people's houses
43:21to tell the victims.
43:23Somebody who's had a drink have caused this road traffic collision,
43:26which has seriously injured your partner or killed them.
