A fine start for many in the south, but a band of rain and cloud will move in from the west. The north of the UK will see heavy rain and gusty winds move eastwards, with persistent rain occurring over Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England through the day. The south will be mainly cloudy, with some sunny spells. A yellow rain warning is in effect for west Scotland. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the morning of 21/08/24. 00:00Good morning. A fine and dry start for many of us this morning, but it is already turning
00:06cloudy from the west and turning increasingly unsettled. The reason for that is our old
00:11friend the jet stream. This really powers up the weather from the North Atlantic. Normally,
00:15this time of year it's displaced well to the north, but it's running right the way across
00:19the UK at the moment and it's set to bring further outbreaks of heavy rain and wind at
00:24times for the rest of the week. And we are already seeing one of those bands of cloud
00:29and rain moving in across parts of Northern Ireland and Western Scotland. And that rain
00:34will become increasingly heavy and persistent during the course of the afternoon. And these
00:39southwesterly winds will also strengthen, particularly across the northern coast of
00:43Northern Ireland and Western Scotland, where I'd like to see coastal gales develop for
00:48a time. Further to the south and east, winds are a lot lighter and a few breaks in that
00:53cloud will allow those temperatures to actually rise into the low 20s. So looking at highs
00:59around 22 or 23. But for areas further to the north under the cloud and rain, temperatures
01:06disappointing on the cool side of average for the time of year. So that band of cloud
01:11and rain across northwest areas will continue to push eastwards during the course of this
01:17evening overnight and that rain becoming heavy and persistent. And there will likely be some
01:22local impacts, so difficult travelling conditions, some localised flooding. And we do have ourselves
01:27a yellow weather warning and that runs right the way through into Thursday. But overnight
01:34temperatures were generally well above where they should be for the time. It's going to
01:38feel quite humid within this weather system. We have the air of ex-hurricane Ernesto, so
01:43quite humid. Now, that band of cloud and rain continues to work eastwards during the course
01:50of Thursday. But as it pushes into the south and east, it's weakening all the time. Further
01:56to the west, it is brightening up. So a day of sunny spells and showers and those winds
02:00will also ease back for a time. And temperatures during the course of Thursday afternoon, very
02:06similar to the values we're going to see this afternoon, with highs of 22 or 23 across the
02:12south and east. But further to the north, we are still on the cool side of average and
02:17the unsettled theme will continue as we move our way through to the rest of the week. Another
02:23spell of wet and windy weather on Friday, but maybe something a little bit more positive
02:28by the time we actually get to the bank holiday weekend. Thank you for watching. Cheers for
02:33now.
