00:16These are 10 moments in video games that came out of absolutely nowhere.
00:20When you've been at something for a good amount of time, it's easy to feel like you've got
00:23a good grasp on what to expect.
00:25Well for these moments, expect the unexpected.

00:40All of his co-workers were gone.
00:43What could it mean?
00:44Stanley decided to go to the meeting room.
00:46Perhaps he had simply missed a memo.
00:48The Stanley Parable puts expectation on its head as one of the most interesting and cleverly
00:53arranged titles to ever be released.
00:55The Stanley Parable has the player repeating the same experience over and over and over
00:59again, finding that changing their pattern ever so slightly creates a butterfly effect
01:03leading them to a vast and diverse list of endings.
01:06One such ending we truly didn't expect has the narrator of the Stanley Parable giving
01:10up on his game they'd created and just deciding to use someone else's.
01:14We can anticipate almost anything, but experiencing 4 different titles from developers unrelated
01:18to this studio was very much unexpected.
01:21Firewatch, Portal, Rocket League and even Minecraft.
01:25What the hell?
01:26If you manage to get lost in this game, I will be phenomenally impressed.
01:31John's Death
01:32Our protagonist's death was somewhat more predictable in the series sequel, as this
01:45first game had set up the tone of losing a protagonist and continuing the epilogue as
01:49a different character.
01:50But unlike the second entry, John wasn't sick.
01:53John had done everything he'd been asked and John was seemingly forgiven, praised and
01:57moving on to a more peaceful existence with his family.
02:00After the game lulls us into a false sense of security, the US military shows up at John's
02:04door and after one final shootout, we face the wrath of a battalion of soldiers, all
02:09with their guns aimed at John.
02:12For a second when we enter dead aim we think, oh are we about to quickfire 25 soldiers?
02:16An obviously impossible feat in hindsight, but we just simply couldn't believe we were
02:20about to watch John die.
02:32Mr Blonde's Identity
02:34Perfect Dark follows secret agent Joanna Dark who is tasked with stopping NSA director Trent
02:39Easton from using alien technology to take over the world.
02:42The game is filled with surprising moments and one twist that nobody saw coming was the
02:46revelation about Trent Easton's right hand man, Mr Blonde.
02:50Always by Trent's side, his true identity remains a mystery until Mr Blonde tells him
02:54he's outlived his usefulness and Trent pulls a gun on him.
02:58Just as Trent is about to shoot, Mr Blonde transforms into a gigantic alien and kills
03:03him in a gruesome manner.
03:04Despite knowing that extraterrestrials were part of the overarching plot, there was no
03:08hint that they were walking among us and now we're left questioning who is and who isn't
03:13an alien.
03:20Samus is Female
03:28Nothing was more surprising than the original Metroids ending.
03:31If you completed the mission in under 3 hours, Samus would remove her armour in the credits
03:36revealing she was a woman.
03:37This twist caught everyone off guard because twists in games weren't really a thing back
03:41then and before this, there weren't a bunch of mainstream female protagonists who used
03:45blasters and violence to take down their foes.
03:48Closest was Ms Pac-Man.
03:50The instruction manual even referred to Samus as a he ensuring only dedicated gamers would
03:55uncover the secret.
03:56Since Samus showed no hint of personality through the game, some people even thought
04:00she was a robot.
04:01Nope, she's way cooler than that.
04:04Surge Speaks
04:09When Chrono Cross, Surge and his group must venture through realities to stop General
04:13Lynx from destabilizing the space-time continuum, why is it always the space-time continuum
04:19being messed with?
04:20Guys, leave it alone.
04:22About halfway through the game, Lynx blasts Surge with an unspecified energy spell to
04:26kill him, and when the dust settles, Surge seems unhurt, implying Lynx's spell failed.
04:31But when Surge's friends ask if he's okay, he replies, I'm just fine.
04:35Although this sounds like an innocuous exchange, the player immediately knows something is
04:39wrong for one reason.
04:41This is the first time Surge has talked.
04:43The player realizes that Lynx has swapped bodies with him, and the player takes control
04:47of Lynx.
04:48Welcome to the next 20 hours of gameplay where you play as Lynx.
04:52Wow.
04:53Clayface
04:54A twist to end all twists.
05:02Not really, but it was very cool.
05:04Just before the climax, Raeesh Al Ghul impales the Joker with his sword, seemingly killing
05:10him.
05:11The Joker stands back up, maniacally laughing, and suddenly mutates, revealing his true identity,
05:15Clayface.
05:16Easily the stupidest name for a supervillain we've ever heard.
05:19Nonetheless, this twist leaves a significant impact because you feel like you should have
05:23seen it coming.
05:24If you used detective mode earlier, you would have noticed he had no bones, being made of
05:28clay.
05:29And if you ask really, really, really nicely, he'll just tell you, and you'll embrace, and
05:33the game ends abruptly.
05:35I think, I've never tested this theory.
05:43Who is Comstock?
05:57In Bioshock Infinite, your character, Booker DeWitt, arrives in the floating city of Columbia,
06:02ruled by the self-appointed prophet, Zachary Hale Comstock.
06:05We love a self-appointed prophet.
06:07Always good news.
06:08At first, you assume Columbia stays afloat through some form of incomprehensibly intelligent
06:12technology.
06:13But as you progress, you discover the city stays in air through quantum mechanics.
06:18You know what quantum mechanics always leads to in storytelling?
06:21That's right.
06:22Parallel universes.
06:23Once this revelation lands, hold onto your hats, because the games can start hurling
06:27revelations at your head like they don't even matter.
06:29Elizabeth can travel to parallel universes.
06:31Elizabeth is Comstock's adopted daughter, and while you're trying to wrap your head
06:34around all these epiphanies, the game drops one more bombshell on you.
06:37Comstock is a parallel version of Booker.
06:40Not only that, Elizabeth is your daughter.
06:42Also, Pearl Harbor was orchestrated by Charlie Chaplin.
06:46That last one's a lie, but it wouldn't have been the wildest thing to happen in this game.
06:49The Huddle.
07:03Even with a game that's completely open to interpretation, we still didn't see this coming.
07:07Since there's no dialogue in Inside, context is displayed visually, and the climax is undeniably
07:13disturbing.
07:14As you approach the end of your journey, you enter a water chamber, where you discover
07:17the Huddle, a grotesque mass composed of human limbs.
07:21To escape the facility, you must merge with the Huddle's body.
07:25Although the nature of this deformed organism is never fully explained, many believe that
07:28the Huddle has been controlling the boy throughout the game, manipulating him to enter the facility
07:33and free it from its aquatic prison.
07:35The realization that you may not, in fact, be the outlier and the only person with free
07:39will is upsetting, and shocking.
07:54The Scratch.
08:02The Walking Dead's show taught us to not get attached to any character, but in the game,
08:06it's impossible not to fall in love with our hero, Lee, and the girl he's protecting,
08:10Clementine.
08:11We live in their shoes, and we falsely lead ourselves to believe we always will.
08:15After a long game, and towards the title's climax, Lee is attacked by a walker, and as
08:20he inspects his arm, he sees the zombie left a tiny bite on his wrist, meaning he is destined
08:25to become a walker himself.
08:27Our minds run almost as fast as him, thinking how can we fix this, unfortunately, we can't,
08:32and our much-loved protagonist ends his story just as it was beginning.
08:37See ya, Lee.
08:38You'll never be forgotten.
08:39Close your eyes, and be thankful you never have to see me as one of them.
08:45You can do it.
08:46I know you can.
08:47Okay, Lee.
08:48I can do it.
08:49I can.
08:50Tea up.
08:51Joe.
08:52Don't act like you heard of us or something.
09:06Because I have.
09:10Although many suspected going into this game that we were going to lose our first game's
09:13protagonist, Joel, nobody anticipated how quickly and how brutally it would take place
09:19in the game's narrative.
09:20Unless they read the leaked scripts, and the many many spoilers, or the rage-filled
09:23hate bombs.
09:25If you followed the studio's publicity, however, you were led to believe Joel was going to
09:28be with us for a good amount of time.
09:30Instead, early in the game he is kidnapped, tortured, and in a final moment of brutality
09:35in the journey of a man who had enacted a fair amount of his own brutality, his head
09:39was bludgeoned with a golf club.
09:41The helpless nature in which he went out was incredibly realistic, but shocking nonetheless.
09:45Please stop.

09:51Joel, please get up.
