00:00We have breaking news from the NFL. J.J. McCarthy is going to miss the entire
00:05season with that torn meniscus in his right knee according to our NFL insider
00:10Jonathan Jones. McCarthy underwent surgery for a full meniscus tear this
00:15morning. We knew the meniscus was torn as of yesterday just did not know the
00:21severity of it. McCarthy out of the picture so Sam
00:25Darnold now QB one. Here's Kevin O'Connell the head coach of the Vikings
00:29moments ago. An update on J.J. McCarthy he did you know undergo surgery actually
00:38this morning on that meniscus it was led by our team doctor Dr. Chris Larson at
00:44TCO was a successful procedure but it did reveal that a repair was necessary
00:51which will end J.J.'s 2024 season. All right so what worst-case scenario here
00:58for the Vikings and J.J. McCarthy who looked pretty good in his preseason
01:02opener Pete Prisco is here with us once again. Pete we talked yesterday when the
01:05news came out that the meniscus was torn that he would need surgery but the hope
01:09was it was maybe just a slight tear that he could be available again in a month
01:14or so. How does this news change things for you? Well it changes things in a big
01:20way for him in large part because even if he wasn't going to be the starter
01:23right away you're around the facility you're getting some reps you're watching
01:27the you know the Sam Darnold work you're getting an idea for what the NFL game is
01:31like week to week and now you're on the sideline and you're not a part of it and
01:37anybody who's been around the National Football League knows when you're not on
01:40the roster and you're not active you're not really part of the team it's a cruel
01:45reality I've seen stars get hurt walk through the locker room and they're
01:49treated like they're no longer part of the team and so that's that's the
01:53damning part for the Vikings. I don't think he was gonna start Chris Sam
01:57Darnold was gonna open the season as the starter but if he struggled they could
02:01have gone to JJ McCarthy at some point now they can't so it's bad for him from
02:06a learning experience it's bad from him maybe playing at some point this season
02:10and it's bad for the Vikings if Sam Darnold doesn't work out. And this
02:14effectively takes him out for what should be the entire season and then you
02:20have to start thinking about okay well when can he ramp up once again how is
02:24this going to affect his development going into what should have been his his
02:29second season but what will now be his first season next year? Yeah and that's
02:34the tough part about it is because he's gonna be a rookie all over again and
02:37yeah he went through the OTAs and he was part of the minicamp and he's been there
02:42for the early part of training camp but he's getting you know no game action at
02:47all no week-to-week action and by that I mean you know you're prepping you're
02:52you're putting the game plan in you're getting some reps during practice you
02:56maybe even become the starter and now that's not gonna happen so he's
02:59essentially gonna be a rookie all over again next year with the exception being
03:03the offseason workouts and and getting to and from the facility he knows all
03:07that stuff but it's gonna be a different type of feel for him than it would have
03:10been even if he had been the backup all season long so I think it sets him back
03:14he's also a guy who can move he's a mobile quarterback and anytime you have
03:20a player that has something wrong with his knee and this isn't an ACL which is
03:23a good thing but anytime you have something wrong with your knee and
03:27you're a mobile quarterback I think that could impact it down the road so it's
03:30it's a bad hit for the Vikings it's a really bad hit for JJ McCarthy. This is a
03:34Vikings offense that has a ton of great pieces including maybe the best wide
03:39receiver in the league and Justin Jefferson what does this Vikings offense
03:44look like with Sam Darnold as really the one and only option as the quarterback?
03:48Well it's a great situation for any quarterback because Kevin O'Connell's
03:53such a great offensive mind and you mentioned Jefferson being
03:57there Addison's probably gonna take a big step forward he was really good last
04:00year you know getting Aaron Jones to run the football is important for him so I
04:05think you add it all up they're gonna be able to score points the question
04:09becomes is can Darnold do it consistently week in and week out there's
04:14been flashes of Sam Darnold being very good at times in his career but the
04:18consistency isn't there can he you know reclaim his glory days from back in
04:23college and become a prototypical NFL quarterback and that's the question we
04:27don't know if he can but this is a great situation for him to try to resurrect
04:32his career. Well they have the Cleveland Browns in their second
04:35preseason game they'll finish up with the Eagles and then open up the regular
04:38season week one September the 8th against the New York Giants in the
04:42Meadowlands Pete Prisco with us here as we get news from the Vikings that JJ
04:48McCarthy is out for the season our season begins September the 8th from the
04:52NFL where Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy will miss the
04:56rest of the season because of a torn meniscus in his right knee that's the
05:01latest from our NFL insider Jonathan Jones now McCarthy underwent surgery
05:04for a full meniscus repair this morning with McCarthy out of the picture it is
05:09Sam Darnold now QB one to start the season.
05:16Jonathan Jones and Mike Renner joining us now on HQ with this breaking news JJ
05:21what is the latest and what more can you tell us about McCarthy's injury? So he
05:26injured himself in that fantastic preseason game that he was having
05:29there's the age-old question of how many reps do the young quarterbacks get
05:35do you play your young quarterbacks in the preseason obviously Kevin O'Connell
05:40and Kwasi Adofa Minza the head coach and general manager respectively the
05:43Minnesota Vikings making the decision that JJ McCarthy needed those reps well
05:48then he goes out and injures and tears his meniscus. During surgery there are
05:54two options and you don't really know until surgery so you make a plan before
05:58surgery you can go in there and maybe you need the trim maybe you need the
06:03full repair and so clearly the decision was made ahead of the surgery that once
06:09in surgery if that's what needed to be done then that is what would be done so
06:13this will require him to sit out the entire season it's it is a blow there's
06:19no question about it there was a lot of promise he's very pro ready but he did
06:23need to get the reps that was the biggest issue with him coming out of
06:27Michigan was how little he threw the ball and actually played the position of
06:31quarterbacks sometimes despite being one of the winningest quarterbacks in
06:35collegiate football history one of the more decorated players with the National
06:38Championship and so now of course Minnesota turning its attention to Sam
06:42Darnold who was very likely going to be the week one starter anyway and then we
06:47were going to see when JJ McCarthy could ultimately unseat Sam Darnold now we
06:52know it will be Sam Darnold in Minnesota to start the season and
06:57hopefully for the Vikings throughout the year yeah I have to echo what Johnson
07:02said there in terms of the reps being huge the fact that over the past two
07:06years he had only five games where he had over 30 drop backs in that Michigan
07:10offense it was a run-heavy offense and going to this Minnesota Vikings team
07:14where they like to air it out it was going to be a big change so he needed to
07:18kind of get that acclimation period but I don't think it's the biggest deal you
07:22know the track record of guys who get that full redshirt year once they get to
07:26the NFL is actually pretty good you know a guy named Patrick Mahomes had that
07:30redshirt year and then year two ended up winning the MVP so I don't think it's
07:33the biggest deal in the world it now gives him a full year and a half to kind
07:36of unlearn all the stuff he had at Michigan that offense and really learn
07:39this Minnesota system down pat and once he comes back Sam Darnold only on a
07:43one-year deal he is the for sure guy in year two there's no competition there's
07:48no worrying about that there's no worrying about getting up to speed he
07:51has that whole year to kind of pause reset and focus continually on the 2025
07:57season now so obviously not what Vikings hope for but I don't think it's the
08:00worst thing in the world to get this redshirt year.
08:02Jonathan Jones and Mike Renner with the latest on JJ McCarthy missing this
08:07entire NFL season due to injury and you can hear much more from Mike our newest
08:12pod on CBS pushing the pile he will be alongside Kyle Long you got to check it
08:16out every morning at 930 a.m. Eastern.
08:22Dave Richard joining us now with the fantasy aspect of this injury news
08:27that just came out JJ McCarthy out for the entire year with a torn meniscus
08:31surgery is done the big question remains what about Justin Jefferson he's number
08:38five when it comes to FFT rankings how does this impact his play? I can't
08:43help but think that it's gonna go down a little bit because he's clearly he was
08:47gonna get a quarterback downgrade anyway Jenny he was going from Kirk Cousins who
08:51was outstanding to Sam Darnold and then a rookie in JJ McCarthy and I thought
08:55McCarthy would be a pretty good quarterback for him I never thought
08:59about the idea of Sam Darnold being the starting quarterback for the entire
09:02season and we've seen Sam Darnold now six seasons he's never connected with a
09:07single receiver for over a thousand yards in the season he's never thrown
09:11more than six touchdowns to one guy over the course of an entire season and we've
09:14seen Sam Darnold have a career completion rate below 60% he is not even
09:20an average NFL starting quarterback but he is going to play with some awesome
09:24weapons in Minnesota and the only thing that's hanging on to Justin Jefferson's
09:28fantasy value besides the fact that he's really good is the fact that he should
09:32still get ten targets per game which means he should still get six or seven
09:35catches per game which means he should still get 80 to 90 yards a game it's the
09:39touchdowns it's the blow-up games I'm worried about and you might even point
09:43back at me and say well Dave didn't you have two monster games with Nick Mullins
09:47late last season and the answer is yes he did they were both against Detroit
09:51that's a bad secondary last year they addressed it this offseason that defense
09:54will be better the other two games that he had below 15 PPR points in each I'm a
09:59little bit nervous that they'll will that will have more of those types of
10:03games 12 13 14 PPR points instead of 15 18 20 30 that we normally get for
10:09Justin Jefferson and just the cherry on top they're scheduled to begin the year
10:12they open against the Giants they improve their pass rush that's bad for
10:16Darnold and then after that they've got the 49ers the Texans the Packers the
10:19Jets and then a bye after that and then the Lions after that and it doesn't
10:23really get that much easier there isn't an easy part of the schedule for the
10:27Minnesota Vikings it makes me nervous and so I don't have Justin Jefferson as
10:32a top-five pick anymore I've got a ninth in my overall rankings not my wide
10:37receiver rankings that's overall he's still gonna be a top-five type of player
10:41but he could slide even further because the idea of him somehow putting together
10:45another 1500 plus yard nine touchdown season with Sam Darnold I have a hard
10:51time seeing that happen so you seem to be a little bit down on
10:55Justin Jefferson just slightly what round are we looking at here that's
11:02that's the other side of it it almost doesn't matter what I would say he's
11:05gonna be I still think he's a late first-round pick the reason why I said
11:10that is because I think people are gonna see that name on the draft board and
11:12they're gonna say I don't care who's throwing him the football could be Fran
11:16Tarkenton I'll take him with anyway so I get a little bit nervous about it but
11:21for now yeah Justin Jefferson still ranks as a first-round pick but not one
11:25that I'm as confident in as I was a couple of days ago much more chatter on
11:29this on fantasy football today you'll hear our guy
