00:37He has a lisp asked my girlfriend's mother as I pulled away in my car after our initial introduction
00:45However, a few days later when I rang that same doorbell
00:49My future mother-in-law melted when she answered the door where I stood holding a single red carnation just for her
00:57Sharon and I dated seriously throughout school. I
01:01Went away to college and Sharon was finishing her senior year
01:05Our love was blooming and was matched only in size by our long-distance telephone bills
01:12The next year Sharon joined me at the University of Texas in Austin. We were so happy
01:18We were on top of the world and felt like our lives were set
01:22That was true until that eventful evening when a split second in our lives
01:28Changed everything forever on
01:31February 18th
01:331981 we were studying at the library of the University
01:37It was late and Sharon wanted to return home to her dormitory to go to sleep
01:43We slid into my car and headed toward her dorm
01:46But unfortunately, my gas gauge was registering empty I pulled into a nearby convenience store
01:53Borrowed two dollars from Sharon and walked inside to pay for the gas
01:59Now things don't always work out as one plans them
02:03Unfortunately, the store was in the midst of a robbery and one of the thieves forced me into the cooler
02:09He followed me pushed me to the floor and calmly shot me in the back of the head
02:15execution style
02:18Now the story does not end there. Yes, the criminal thought I was dead thus eliminating any witness to the crime
02:26However, when the thieves left the store, I still had a faint pulse
02:31Very few people believed that would remain alive much longer
02:35This is why the police transferred my case to the homicide division
02:39It is also why the neurosurgeon when he was awakened at his home to see me at the hospital
02:45Came quickly, but returned home as he believed an operation would be futile
02:52However, when the doctor returned to the hospital in the morning, he was shocked to see that I was still alive
02:59He told my parents that an operation was necessary, but added it was unlikely. I'd survived the surgery. I
03:07Defied all odds and survived the surgery
03:10the surgeon warned my parents that I was breathing but would probably never be able to communicate with her or
03:17Understand anyone who was attempting to communicate with me. He said I would be a vegetable
03:24Hearing those words. My father told Sharon get on with your life
03:30Sharon quickly replied Mike is my life
03:36Okay
03:46So
03:48Even though we were not yet married Sharon believed in the vows and sickness and health
03:53She dropped out of college for one semester to be with me at the Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston

04:04Was spending time with her
04:07drooling boyfriend at the hospital
04:10While other college freshmen were spending their time at parties
04:14Eventually Sharon returned to Austin to continue her college education
04:20Once again, we had enormous phone bills
04:24My goal was to also return to the university to be with Sharon
04:2918 months after the tragedy that no one thought I would survive. I
04:34accomplished that goal one of the primary reasons was
04:45So here's the deal
04:47Sharon my love who refused to give up or give in
04:51Four years after returning to college. I graduated and for me that meant I could finally propose to Sharon
04:58My light at the end of the dark tunnel
05:02She was the one who would always encourage me
05:08To look forward and not to focus on the past on a beautiful day in May
05:14Sharon and I exchanged vows and were married
05:19We were meant to be together
05:22We had dated for nine long and eventful years
05:26But I realized at the wedding that it was worth everything
05:30Sharon was truly my soulmate
05:34We have been married for years and have beautiful daughter

05:44We have experienced so much together some good but more much more great
05:50This is not merely a love letter to my wife, but rather it is a story of a girl overcoming everyone's advice

07:36People like us have already overcome a bar that's up here and have the ability to go
07:42Much further than that, and I believe that's true about everybody, you know, it's truly amazing
