Exam D-Day and these pupils opened their results in front of the media
Transcript
00:00I'm here at Wade Academy this morning as S4, S5, and S6 students open their SQA exam results
00:08live on camera.
00:09Watch the moment when all their hard work pays off and they can finally celebrate their
00:13results.
00:39I was super nervous because with uni and things there were certain grades I was looking for
00:59and just with the way the papers have gone I wasn't quite sure what I was going to get
01:03but super happy because it went better than I could have hoped for.
01:08I noticed that it seemed to be a really nice moment between you and your parents this year.
01:13Can you tell me a little bit about how that felt to celebrate?
01:16I was with my mum and that was really great because I know that she was supporting me
01:20a lot when I was revising and things so it was great to celebrate that with her.
01:25That's so great and I think you were saying to my colleagues, what comes next for you?
01:29I'm going to be applying to Strathclyde for Aeronautical Engineering because I want to
01:34be a pilot, that's my goal, so my grades fit what I need which is really exciting.
01:40It was a bit easier for me because mine didn't really matter.
01:42I've already got a place at university but I was worried for her.
01:46She was a bit nervous.
01:47Yeah, I was a bit nervous.
01:48But you've done better than you expected.
01:50Yeah, I did way better than I expected so I'm much happier now.
01:54What were you expecting?
01:56I was expecting some C's and some B's and maybe a couple of A's but mostly B's.
02:03But I got six A's and two B's so I'm very happy.
02:12I got two A's and one B.
02:14Chemistry was the one that I was stressed for and didn't do as well in it.
02:20But I'm not doing chemistry ever again.
02:22Very good.
02:23The two subjects I got my A's in are the ones I'm actually pursuing so that's more helpful for me.
02:28And where are you guys off to next?
02:30So you're in fifth year.
02:32Yeah, so I'm going to do my highers this year.
02:35And then I'm going to university.
02:36I'm going to Strathclyde to study Aeromechanical Engineering.
02:39Well, congratulations guys.
02:42How about your family?
02:44How did they feel after seeing what you got?
02:46Well, my dad firstly judged me for opening the envelope the wrong way around.
02:50I was clearly too stressed to realise I opened it at the wrong end.
02:52Yeah, so everyone was taking pictures and I was frantically trying to get it open without realising I was doing it at the wrong side.
02:59But they're proud of us, I think.
03:03I think they're surprised I got an A in Chemistry.
03:06Well, you're surprised you got an A in Chemistry.
03:08I'm surprised I got an A in Chemistry.
03:10Really good.
03:11Yeah, amazing.
03:12Happy with your results?
03:13Yeah, definitely.
03:14Really good.
03:16Can you tell me a little bit about the nerves, the excitement leading up to opening these live on camera?
03:22I kept telling myself I can't cry on live telly, so if I didn't do well, then yeah.
03:28That was the same for me.
03:29I was just thinking, it is what it is.
03:31So, it's fine, no matter what.
03:34Right, and how did you guys do compared to what you were expecting?
03:38It's what I got predicted, but I didn't think I'd done as well as what I did.
03:44Right.
03:45That's the same for me.
03:46I was predicting it, but I was fully convinced that I wouldn't do as well as I thought I would at the same time.
03:52I got better than I was predicted, so I'm so happy.
03:56It felt nice opening it with my friends.
03:59It felt more comfortable, because you weren't on your own.
04:02So, it's an extremely nerve-wracking day for all learners across the country and here in Wade as well.
04:07And it's great to see the results and reflect on the hard work of all of our young people.
04:12And obviously, the teachers as well.
04:14And thanks to the teachers and staff, but most thanks to the young people who have worked really hard over the course of the year.
04:19There have been changes this year with the reintroduction of coursework.
04:23The SQA have reintroduced coursework, so it's been important to prepare all of our young people for that this year
04:29and make sure they achieve the best possible results.
04:31Perfect.
04:32And how were the majority of people feeling this morning?
04:35Yeah, I think there was a lot of nerves and a lot of excitement as well.
04:39But it's great to see that culmination of all the hard work throughout the course of the year.
04:43And how does it feel for you as a headteacher to see everyone across the finish line?
04:46It's great. It's a real sense of achievement.
04:48And it's important to see all the results, no matter what they are.
04:52There's people there to help if you're not as happy with your results as well.
04:56And we're there to support young people with their successes and if they need a bit of support going forward as well.
