00:00What is writing for kids?
00:04Today, we will learn about writing and the different kinds of writing that we can create.
00:12Writing is defined as a way to communicate ideas and thoughts through symbols in a readable
00:17form.
00:18Some languages use symbols while others use a combination of letters to form words.
00:24Writing can be used to create something as simple as a sentence or something more complex
00:29such as a story or poem.
00:32Let's start by looking at a sentence.
00:36A sentence is a set of words that express a complete thought.
00:39The books we read are made up of lots of sentences.
00:43They can convey a statement, question, exclamation, or command.
00:49A complete sentence is made up of four parts, a capital letter, a subject, a verb, and a
00:56punctuation mark.
00:59Now let's take a look at the different types of writing you can create.
01:05A story or narrative is the telling of an event, either fiction or nonfiction, and is
01:10connected through a series of words.
01:14Stories can be told to us or written down.
01:17To write a story, you must follow what is called the writing process.
01:23There are six steps in the writing process.
01:25They are brainstorming, planning, pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
01:36Now that we know what a story is, let's take a look at the different types of writing or
01:41stories we can create.
01:45A narrative tells the events of a story in order.
01:48This can be an essay, a biography, or a novel.
01:53Writers write narratives to tell their readers a story to educate them or to entertain them.
02:00Narratives can be fiction or nonfiction.
02:03Examples of narratives are Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon, Jabari Jumps by Gaya Cornwall,
02:12and Enemy Pie by Derek Munson.
02:16A personal narrative is writing that tells a true story from your life in the order that
02:21it happened.
02:22It can include details about main events, dialogue, setting, descriptions of people,
02:29and more.
02:30A personal narrative can focus on any event whether it lasted a few seconds or a few years.
02:38Authors write personal narratives to tell others about something that happened to them,
02:43to express themselves, or to teach their readers something they learned from their experience.
02:50A small moment is a special kind of personal narrative.
02:54It is a small part of a bigger story.
02:57A good way to remember it is by thinking of a watermelon.
03:01A watermelon is a really big fruit, so you can think of it as the big moment.
03:06Each watermelon has lots of tiny seeds, and the seeds are the small moments.
03:13An example of a big moment could be the first day of school.
03:17Lots of things can happen on the first day of school.
03:20I can focus on one small moment of that day, like my very first game of tag for the school
03:26year.
03:27That was really fun, and I made some new friends that day.
03:33Informative writing is also known as informational writing.
03:37It teaches readers something new or more about a topic.
03:42Informative writing can be a newspaper article, an encyclopedia, an essay, or a non-fiction
03:48book.
03:50Informational books are made up of facts about a topic.
03:54Facts are statements and information that can be proven true.
03:59Informational books are written to inform or teach readers about a topic.
04:05Opinion writing is where we share our opinions with others by writing about them.
04:10For this, we write opinion statements.
04:14An opinion is a belief that someone has about someone or something.
04:20Opinions can describe what someone thinks, feels, or believes.
04:24It can share a person's or group's point of view.
04:28You can choose to agree or disagree with an opinion.
04:33Here is an example of an opinion.
04:35Sally thinks that cake is the best snack.
04:39This is Sally's opinion, but Susie does not agree with that opinion.
04:44Susie thinks cookies are the best snack.
04:47That is also an opinion, so this means that Sally and Susie disagree about snacks.
04:57Poetry is a type of literature.
04:59A poem can be a collection of words that expresses feelings or ideas, sometimes with a specific
05:05meaning, sound, or rhythm.
05:08In poetry, words can be put together to create sounds, imagery, and ideas that sometimes
05:14might be too hard to describe directly.
05:17Someone who writes poetry is called a poet.
05:21Poets write poems to share a personal experience or feeling, to entertain their audience, or
05:27to share about the world around them.
05:30Poems can be a powerful way to express yourself through writing.
05:36We did it!
05:37We learned about writing and the different kinds of writing that we can create.
