00:00The monuments still stand, the mystery remains.
00:11For thousands of years the world of ancient Egypt has inspired wonder.
00:18And director Stephen Sommers brought that world to life by creating the blockbuster
00:24series of mummy movies.
00:27Now at Universal Studios Hollywood, Sommers and a team of ride creators, art directors,
00:33special effects and construction engineers are creating a new kind of ride to bring the
00:38mummy movies to life.
00:40The movies themselves are kind of great rides and I always loved roller coasters and I always
00:44loved haunted houses and I thought, oh, wouldn't it be fun to combine a roller coaster with
00:47a haunted house?
00:48And so that's what you have here.
00:51It's like the next step on the adventure.
00:53Over 600 tons of steel, 1,000 tons of concrete and 2,000 tons of sand are being used in the
01:01construction of an ancient Egyptian tomb right in the heart of Hollywood.
01:05It took the ancient Egyptians generations and thousands of workers to build the tombs
01:09of Egypt, but we don't have that much time.
01:12So we're doing it a lot faster because we've got power tools.
01:16But unlike the movie, it not only has to look real on film, it has to look real in person.
01:22We went to great lengths to ensure that everything we were doing in the attraction would be absolutely
01:26authentic.
01:27In fact, we even consulted the world's foremost Egyptologists to make sure that when you come
01:31through the experience, every single hieroglyph actually means something and you can pretty
01:36much read the walls of this building.
01:38Recreating a realistic tomb was an important part of bringing the movies to life, but the
01:42ride creators set themselves an equally daunting challenge.
01:46How could they move riders through the space with the same freedom of motion as the camera
01:50moves in a movie?
01:52The answer was the technology used in futuristic bullet trays, technology never before used
01:58in a theme park ride.
01:59Revenge of the Mummy is going to be California's fastest indoor roller coaster.
02:03After traveling through the mummy's tomb, you suddenly catapult into utter darkness.
02:07You can't tell what's up, what's down.
02:09You go forwards, you go backwards.
02:10We're throwing everything we can possibly think at our guests to create the ride of
02:14their life.
02:16Every time you come around a new curve, you're going into a new scene.
02:19The difference between this and like the movies is we only have a few minutes and we really
02:21want to take them on a thrill ride.
02:23Like, you know, every time you think you know what's going to happen, it jags and jigs on
02:27you and you're always surprised.
02:31Revenge of the Mummy, The Ride, opens June 25th at Universal Studios Hollywood Theme
02:37Park.
