00:00Hang on, hang on.
00:06Oh, what's this?
00:09Dear Tim and Moby,
00:12Kids at school pick on me and make fun of my clothes.
00:16They also call me names. What should I do?
00:19From Charlotte.
00:21Oh gosh, I hate that.
00:23This older kid named Craig used to pick on me when I was in the second grade.
00:27He made fun of my lunches and my baseball swing,
00:30and he called me names like Four Eyes.
00:33That was real original.
00:35Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that name.
00:38I never quite figured that one out.
00:40Well, enough about that.
00:42Bullying is when a person repeatedly mistreats someone
00:45to feel like they have some kind of power over them.
00:48It can take many forms.
00:50We've already covered name-calling.
00:52Bullying can also be making fun of someone,
00:55leaving them out of activities, taking their stuff,
00:58forcing them to do things they don't want to do,
01:00and even physically hurting them.
01:03Anything someone does that makes someone else feel bad or unsafe
01:06can be bullying as far as I'm concerned.
01:09Kids get bullied for different things,
01:11even stuff they should feel proud of.
01:14They could be really good at school, or in sports, or have lots of friends.
01:18The person bullying them might feel jealous or threatened by their success.
01:23Sometimes it's the opposite.
01:25Kids with few friends or low self-esteem getting bullied.
01:28They can be seen as easy targets and less likely to push back.
01:33Often, bullying targets a person's differences, like how they look,
01:37or their religion, or sexual orientation, or race.
01:41This bullying is based on the dangerous belief
01:44that certain groups are better than other groups.
01:47No matter why someone is getting bullied, it's never okay.
01:51And if you see it happening, you should stick up for the kid getting bullied.
01:55Stand with them.
01:56And if it feels safe, calmly and firmly tell the bully to stop.
02:02If someone is bullying you, there are some things you can do.
02:06You can ignore them and just walk away whenever they start bothering you.
02:10Try surrounding yourself with friends.
02:13It's not as easy to pick on a big group of people.
02:16In some cases, you can let them know that they're making you feel bad.
02:20That can be tough to do, so practice ahead of time to build your confidence.
02:24And remember, it's okay to tell an adult what's going on,
02:28even if you think the situation is under control.
02:31Parents, teachers, and school counselors are there to help you deal with tough issues like bullying.
02:36They can help those who bully understand that their behavior is wrong,
02:40and teach them better ways to get attention and connect with other kids.
02:46Oh, and if you ever find yourself being mean to someone else, please stop.
02:52Everyone's been bullied at one point or another,
02:54so you know how it feels when someone's picking on you.
02:57It doesn't feel good.
02:59And it doesn't make you any bigger or better.
03:02What does make you bigger and better is being nice to people.
03:07That always impresses me.
03:10Yeah, it's a lot cooler to have friends than enemies.
03:13Look, there's Craig.
03:23I think you dropped this.
03:25Thanks, dude.
03:27Oh, hey Craig.
03:28Dimbo.
