Euros 2024 Final: England Vs Spain match preview | The Nutmeg
Transcript
00:00The three lines of England and La Roya of Spain, these are the finalists for this year's Euros.
00:06And of course, this is our preview of the game set for the Olympia Stadion in Berlin on Sunday.
00:11My name is Ayon Mideshotu and this is The Nutmeg on Guardian TV.
00:20It's been a great pleasure previewing all the games and most of the games in fact with
00:25he makes it here again for the final and of course it's exciting the three lions of England
00:31another a taste of glory could await. It's awaiting them on Sundays. It remains to be
00:36seen if they could do it but there might not be a tougher opponent right now than Spain but
00:42before we get into that I want to really get your opinion on this. What have you made again
00:47of the tournament? I know I've asked this before but you know we've seen 50 games out of 51 so
00:52have you seen the tournament so far? Yeah the tournament has been beautiful though this is not
00:59what we actually expected from the start of the game of the competition but as the game continues
01:06to grow we've had a beautiful watch of each games and you know it's been fun all the way actually.
01:15Yeah it is and of course that fun has led us to Berlin the Olympia Stadium where the three
01:22lions of England under Gary Salgates will be looking to at least win. It'd be a lot of records
01:29if they could win that one we're talking about whether they could win for the first time on
01:33foreign soil. It's the first time they're in a final on foreign soil and they'll be looking for
01:38their first silverware since the 60s as well when they won the world cup they've never won any piece
01:43of silverware since then. So but it doesn't get tougher than Spain really because they are also
01:50under Luis de la Fuente are also aiming for you know a fourth continental title and that'll be a
01:57record for them as well. This is a final for the ages. Yes yes it's a final for the ages because
02:03the two teams have something to you know to hold on to. There's a goal for every team
02:12and there are records to be set and records to be broken. Yeah so it's a perfect final.
02:19So let's look at the either side of the divide now talking about the final. For Gary Salgates
02:24England it looks more interesting. These guys have been knocking on the door. I've not made
02:30predictions since like the quarterfinal. I think today's my time to do that. I think England will
02:34will and for good reason. Maybe that's not what everybody wanted. Maybe that's not what everybody
02:40expected. It's always been coming home quote-unquote but it has never been home. You know
02:45it's coming but it's never been home. I think this is the year it will be home for them. Why?
02:49Because you look back to when Salgates led them to the first final and that that was in the last
02:54edition of the Euros. They were this close. You look at World Cup tournaments that he's taken
03:00them to as well in 2018 and in 2020. Is it 2022 now? Yes. They were always close. The semi-finals,
03:07the finals and for me something football is all about the consistency. If you keep building and
03:12you're knocking on the door like that and you get to the final again, I would expect you to win. I
03:17won't be surprised. It's just that for me it looks like Spain are the tougher opponent. The toughest
03:23that they could have met at this point. Well, we know like you said Spain is the favourite as it
03:31were because of their style of play and the journey from the beginning. Their first match
03:37and they've not even lost a game. They've not drawn either. They've won all their games and
03:43that is why they are here. That's why they are in the final. On the other hand, England
03:48they've been struggling. I remember telling you at the beginning of the competition that
03:53for every game you play, you begin to tune some things and fine-tune some things.
04:02I told us that from the beginning, Southgate started with a midfield of three midfielders who
04:10we had them. Arnott, Ineed and from there he moved to Galaga. From Galaga he moved to Manu and I
04:17believe that Ian knows that this guy is very very important. However, I believe that
04:25they have all it takes. The two teams have all it takes to be able to lift the trophy
04:32at the end of the day. What governs the play is how hungry they are. Each team,
04:39how hungry they are to actually achieve this trophy. However, we still have to look at the
04:48play of the two teams, the coach and what exactly do you want to put into this game.
04:57But the two teams are perfect. You know, you also look at the recent meeting between them.
05:03Entertaining match in 2018, 3-2. England were winners in that one but also since 1996,
05:10they've met six times. Spain have won more actually, three times and then England won
05:14once and there were two draws in between. But what's the potential of an extra time?
05:20I don't know. Do you think this enters into extra time or finishes in 90 minutes?
05:28It's a tough game and we do not know where the game is going to lead to. Whether it's going to
05:34be a penalty shootout or an extra time ends in extra time or even end in 90 minutes. We don't
05:39know. We are not sure until we start the game. It's the final and final cannot be really predicted.
05:46We have seen finals that ended up in penalty shootout. We've seen finals that
05:50ended up in 90 minutes and we've seen extra time. So, we don't know. But I believe that if you watch
06:00the two teams, Spain had always wanted for all their games, they've always wanted it to end in
06:0790 minutes. I don't know why but somehow I feel like they do not have what it takes to go to.
06:14So, what you're telling me is if it drags on to the extra time, you'd rate England? Because I
06:19really do want to lean towards that as well. If Spain can't get the business done in 90 minutes,
06:25England have been at their peak when they have to come back into games,
06:29when they have to take their time to find the winner, to find that important goal.
06:35If you watch their last game, if you watch Spain's last game, they qualified after
06:41the extra time. You discover that some of the players were already weak because they got into
06:49the extra time. That was the first time they were in an extra time in the competition. But you see,
06:54England have been through it several times. They've played penalty shootout to qualify.
07:00I believe that Spain want to end the game within 90 minutes. While England, if they end it within
07:0790 minutes, it's fair for them. If they go into extra time, beautiful. And if they go into penalty
07:12shootout, fantastic. I sense that you're hiding. Since your predictions have not been accurate in
07:16the recent episodes, tell me, who are you thinking would win? I don't know why you're hiding.
07:22My predictions concerning England have been right. Are you predicting them to win this one?
07:28Yes, I said it in the last episode. They have everything it takes to win the Euros and I'm
07:34going for them at this time. I said if they get into the final, it is coming home. I mean,
07:41they've been consistent like you said. They've actually, in all competitions, the last time
07:45they were here, it was with a slim margin that Italy won them. And that was during penalty
07:53shootout. Which is anybody's game to be fair. Alright, there you have it, our predictions
07:58for the game. He thinks that England will and so do I. It is interesting to know what will happen
08:04in Berlin on Sunday. You can tell us what you feel will happen in the comments section. Who will
08:08win the Euros, Euro 2024? Is it going to be the Three Lions of England or the La Roya of Spain?
