00:00Let me ask you about Messi and Argentina.
00:05They're in the Copa final against a team that's on fire in Colombia that's won 28 in a row
00:11and they got it done last night against Uruguay, won nothing, albeit afterwards some ugliness
00:16on the pitch with players fighting and then it went up into the stands like the malice
00:21at the palace with all the Uruguayans fighting to protect their family and friends and kids
00:28against some crazy Colombian fans that were really overwhelming them.
00:33Yeah, a terrible scene after the game.
00:37We still don't really know what happened, what precipitated it all, but it was ugly
00:42regardless and certainly Comrabal, the South American federation, is going to have to investigate
00:50that and figure out what happened and then decide whether or not discipline is necessary
00:55for any of the players involved and I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were facing something
01:01based on, you go back to the malice at the palace and I don't know that you'll see the
01:06kind of punishment in this case that we saw then where the suspensions were so protracted,
01:13but I'd be surprised once you enter that, you cross that barrier, you've put yourself
01:19in an untenable position as an athlete.
01:22Just as we saw a pitch invasion in the England game, I believe it was, that I watched the
01:29other night or yesterday afternoon I should say, there was a pitch invasion in one of
01:34the semifinal games that I watched and they had to track down that person.
01:40So you're not supposed to be on the other side of that line, so we'll see what happens,
01:45but the game itself on Sunday night, Colombia versus Argentina, couldn't have asked for
01:53a more compelling final in the Copa America after what's been a pretty messy tournament,
01:58we mentioned what happened off the field, but on the field it's been a wreck too, not
02:01necessarily in terms of the soccer, but in terms of the officiation and adjudication
02:06of the tournament has been an absolute mess, but now we get the two best teams and I was
02:13in Brazil 10 years ago when James Rodriguez exploded as a player, he scored a couple of
02:19goals in around a 16 game against Uruguay, became an absolute sensation during his time
02:26there, and then the last decade or so as a club player has not gone well, but now we're
02:31being reminded of why he was that sensation of the 2014 World Cup, he's now the sensation
02:39of the 2024 Copa America, even more so than Messi, who was phenomenal the other night
02:45when he had to be, but hadn't really put that much into the group stage, so now we see those
02:51two square off and Argentina, best soccer I think is still better than Colombia's best,
02:57but Colombia may be better at keeping you, in this case Argentina being you, from playing
03:03your best.
03:05Yeah, they have been absolutely unbelievable, what do you think of the Euro final, we like
03:10to say here on Coast to Coast, Spain never loses.
03:16Well, England obviously has not won a championship for a very long time, and their pragmatism
03:24as a team has gotten them though to the semifinals of the World Cup in 2018, to the finals of
03:30Euros in 2021, and now to another final, I think that pragmatism is going to have to
03:38be entrenched, because Spain has shown, they broke down a French defense that had not been
03:45yielding much at all, so we need to see England play pragmatically, not pretty, but they're
03:51going to have to try to steal one, try to win one, one nothing or something like that,
03:55I think they can do it, but Spain's really the one that would be favored and tough to stop.
04:02Respectfully, I got 25 seconds, that 16 year old kid on Spain is a badass,
04:07what a kick he had that goal off the left post.
04:11Yeah, Yamal has been fantastic, what I caution people not to do is to expect because he's
04:18great at 16, that he'll be that much greater at 20 or 24 or whatever, if he stays this
04:24great, he'll have had a phenomenal career, if he takes more steps, great, but don't expect it and
04:29don't demand it, he's going to have a phenomenal career, even if this is as good as he ever gets.
04:35Mike loves soccer, but he loves the Pirates more,
04:38he just won't admit it on this show publicly, Mike, great stuff, thank you.
