00:00It's been a very long night and an efficiently conducted count, thank you very much, thank you
00:05also to the Atlantic Racket Centre which has provided a superb venue for this elections count.
00:12I also would like to thank, if I may, my fellow candidates, all of whom fought,
00:18some I think new to the political fray, but I'm sure they'll be back
00:22in one form or another, who fought excellent fights. I am privileged to have been elected
00:31for the sixth time for this constituency, for at least a constituency covering the same area.
00:37I do not propose to be making a long speech this evening after such a long day. This is a moment
00:45when my party needs and will have to reflect on why the verdict of the British people has been
00:51so severe. I think those of us who have lived over the last four and a half years will be able already
00:57to form some conclusions, but I think the time has come for us to wish the new government well.
01:04It's important that it does succeed and in entering to opposition, as we in the Conservative
01:12Party will do, I hope we will do it in a constructive spirit, opposing not simply for
01:18the sake of opposing, but where it's necessary in the national interest. So ladies and gentlemen,
01:24I have to say it's with a sense of great humility and honour that I once again take up the mantle
01:32of representing this great constituency and its extraordinary people. It's a privilege to have
01:38done so for 19 years and I will do it to the best of my ability for the next five. Thank you very much.
